dr4g0n vs Kr1ptonyte - Surprise in Ubers - a warstory

Ubers. A fast paced battling environment, where a single mistake may destroy an entire team. In this environment, many good OU players falter, unable to survive in such a demanding environment. Despite this, there is room for the mediocre in Ubers. The following warstory is a match between two such players. My own skill, while not the greatest, is still considerable, so when Kr1ptonyte challenged me to a battle, I could hardly refuse. I had absolutely no idea that what followed was to be one of the closest and most intense battles I have ever had.

So, enough introduction, the story begins.

Note: this was our first match against each other, so we had no prior knowledge of each other’s teams

My team: Kyogre, Rayquaza, Forretress, Shedinja, Garchomp, Gengar

Kr1ptonyte’s team: Wobbuffet, Heatran, Kyogre, Groudon, Deoxys-f

dr4g0n sent out Kyogre.
Kr1ptonyte sent out Wobbuffet.
Kyogre’s Drizzle caused a storm!
Rain begins to fall.

Wobbuffet, huh?. Well Wobbuffet vs Kyogre is usually a no brainer, but my Ogre has a surprise in store for the blue limbo blob.

Kyogre used Water Spout.
Wobbuffet lost 100% of its health.
Kr1ptonyte’s Wobbuffet fainted.
Rain continues to fall.

Kyogre – 100%
Wobbuffet – 0%

Oh, yeah – did I mention that my Ogre was modest, max SpAtk, SpecsOgre? No? Oh well, in any case, SpecsOgre strikes hard, OHKOing the blob. 6-5 to me is a solid start.

Kr1ptonyte sent out Groudon.
Groudon’s Drought intensified the sun’s rays!
The rain stopped.
The sun began to shine!

Groudon? Kind of a weird switch in to Kyogre, but I figure he’s realized by now that I’m specs’d. From this, I deduce an aggressive Groudon, perhaps at max speed to be able to deal enough damage to Kyogre to neutralize it as a threat. Because of this, I realize that if this Groudon is probably a physical sweeper, then this is a perfect opportunity for me to set up SR. Briefly, I considered a switch to Rayquaza or Shedinja, but either of these moves would accomplish nothing…so…off to Forretress!

dr4g0n switched in Forretress.
Groudon used Dragon Claw.
It’s not very effective…
Forretress lost 8% of its health.
The sun continues to shine.

Forretress – 98%
Groudon – 100%

He he. It appears that my opponent has grossly overpredicted. It wasn’t actually a bad move. In case of a switch to Rayquaza, I would be in a world of pain. Here, however, Forretress comes in taking a Dragon Claw like it was nothing. Here, I’m expecting an aggressive switch to force Forretress from the field, so I’ll use the switch to set up SR.

Groudon used Fire Punch.
It’s super effective!
Forretress lost 85% of its health.
Forretress used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe’s team.
The sun continues to shine.

Forretress – 19%
Groudon – 100%

Holy shit! WTF??!! Groudon learns Fire Punch?!?!?! Well now, I move from calm and collected to panic mode. Forretress is very nearly wiped out by the pokes it was supposed to wall. Well, on the bright side, the sash-breaking SR is up, and Forretress survives a 4x effective fire move in sunlight. : )
Forretress, however can still be useful, and Kr1ptonyte’s desire to finish it off leaves an easy switch on my part.

dr4g0n switched in Kyogre.
Kyogre’s Drizzle caused a storm!
The sun faded.
Fain began to fall!
Groudon used Fire Punch.
It’s not very effective…
Kyogre lost 7% of its health.
Rain continues to fall.

Groudon – 100%
Kyogre – 100%

Yep, SpecsOgre is back with a switch to force. Water Spout is still insanely powerful enough to give something a hard drubbing, so here it comes.

Kr1ptonyte switched in Kyogre.
Pointed stones dug into Kyogre.
Kyogre lost 12% of its health.
Kyogre* used Water Spout.
It’s not very effective…
Kyogre lost 50% of its health.

Kyogre – 44%
Kyogre* - 93%

Woah. 50% to another Ogre. Even I’m impressed. Here, however, I’m forced to switch to avoid the incoming Thunder. Luckily for me, however, I have the world’s most comprehensive Kyogre counter waiting to be let loose.

dr4g0n switched in Shedinja.
Kyogre used Rest.
Kyogre fell asleep.
Kyogre restored 56% of its health.
Rain continues to fall.

Shedinja – 100%
Kyogre – 100%

Well…that didn’t go as expected. Kr1ptonyte uses the free turn to Rest his Ogre back to full health and Shedinja comes in slightly disappointed. Clearly, this is a RestTalking Ogre. Well, on the bright side, I have a free turn. Kyogre can’t really do anything to me, so I’m pretty sure it will switch. I see Groudon coming, so I set out to effectively neutralize the threat it poses.

Ky1ptonyte switched in Groudon.
Pointed stones dug into Groudon.
Groudon lost 6% of its health.
Groudon’s Drought dried up the sun’s rays!
The rain stopped.
The sun began to shine!
Shedinja used Will-o-wisp.
Shedinja’s attack missed.
The sun continues to shine.

Shedinja – 100%
Groudon – 100%

Damn my luck! Well, Fire Punch is coming, but I’m not fully prepared to switch just yet. I’ll live through the Punch due to my sash, so I decide to try again.

Groudon used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe’s team.
Shedinja used Will-o-wisp.
Groudon was burned!
The sun continues to shine.
Groudon is hut by its burn.
Groudon lost 12% of its health.

Shedinja – 100%
Groudon – 94%

SR?? Well, clearly, I was wrong about the Groudon. This one is a supporting Rock Titan. Well, its aggressive power is neutered, so nothing else is in any real danger. The SR is a problem, however, so I really need to get rid of it. This, of course means Forretress. Switching Forretress in directly is suicide, as Fire Punch will destroy me. The safest switch here is probably Kyogre, but I don’t really want Ogre to get too worn down just yet, so I use my other Fire resist that poses a decent threat.

dr4g0n switched in Rayquaza.
Pointed stones dug into Rayquaza.
Rayquaza lost 25% of its health.
Groudon used Fire Punch.
It’s not very effective…
Rayquaza lost 7% of its health.
The sun continues to shine.
Groudon is hurt by its burn.
Groudon lost 12% of its health.

Rayquaza – 67%
Groudon – 88%

Yeah, I take shit all from Fire Punch, but all too much from SR. Well, Dragon Claw’s coming, so…

dr4g0n switched in Forretress.
Pointed stones dug into Forretress.
Forretress lost 12% of its health.
Groudon used Dragon Claw.

Groudon is hurt by its burn.
Groudon lost 12% of its health.

Groudon – 82%
Forretress – 9%

Off to Forretress without a hitch. Now to spin and…… shit! Groudon outspeeds me. Well I’m in already, so no real point in switching. I just hope he overpredicts. Please…

Groudon used Toxic.
It doesn’t affect Forretress…
Forretress used Rapid Spin.
Forretress blew away the spikes!
Groudon lost 1% of its health.
The sun continues to shine.
Groudon is hurt by its burn.
Groudon lost 12% of its health.

Groudon – 75%
Forretress – 15%

Yes!!! Now SR is out of the way and Forretress lives still. Here, I’m going to sacrifice Forretress. It’s done its job and done it well. Good job, Forretress.

Groudon used Fire Punch.
It’s super effective!
Forretress lost 15% of its health.

Well, I’ve been on the receiving end of some bad surprises, so now I figure its time to return the favour. Go Gengar!

dr4g0n sent out Gengar.

Ha! Counter-Sash Gengar doesn’t even need the sash to survive and OHKO back with Counter. There is the price of underestimation, and the power of surprise! : )

Kr1ptonyte sent out Kyogre.
Pointed stones dug into Kyogre.
Kyogre lost 12% of its health.
Kyogre’s Drizzle caused a storm!

Kr1ptonyte’s Kyogre fainted.

That. Double kill for Gengar. So there to all those people who tell us how Gengar is outclassed in Ubers. Mewtwo who?

dr4g0n sent out Kyogre.
Kr1ptonyte sent out Deoxys–f.
Pointed stones dug into Deoxys–f.
Deoxys – f lost 12% of its health.
Kyogre’s Drizzle caused a storm!

My turn to destroy stuff with Kyogre. Ha! I see Deoxys-f. Well there goes sashed Deoxys, anyway. I see Thunder coming, though, and I want to still hold on to that obscenely powerful Water Spout, so I make a switch to someone who can absorb Thunder.

dr4g0n sent out Shedinja.
Deoxys–f used Shadow Ball.
It’s super effective!
Shedinja lost 100% of its health.
Shedinja hung on using its Focus Sash!
Rain continues to fall.

Deoxys–f – 88%
Shedinja – 100%

Well…shit. That was a brilliant prediction by Kr1ptonyte. Now Shedinja is pretty much gone. Still Shadow Sneak should draw a Deoxys kill…right?

Ky1ptonyte sent out Heatran.
Pointed stones dug into Heatran.
Heatran lost 12% of its health.
Shedinja used Shadow Sneak.
It’s not very effective…
Heatran lost 6% of its health.
Rain continues to fall.

Shedinja – 100%
Heatran – 82%

Apparently not. Heatran, huh? Well, everyone tells me how useless Heatran is under perpetual rain – which it is now, so time to set up a Garchomp sweep.

dr4g0n switched in Garchomp.
Heatran used Dragon Pulse.
It’s super effective!
Garchomp lost 75% of its health.
Rain continues to fall.

Heatran – 82%
Garchomp – 25%

Damn it. Outpredicted twice. I guess Dragonpulse was for Rayquaza, but it took a nasty chunk out of Garchomp instead. This means no swords dancing, but earthquake is still a kill.
But wait…What item is this Heatran holding? No life orb damage, no lefties recovery. This leaves Specs- or Scarf-tran. Specs-tran will most likely have killed Garchomp, so my gut feeling is that this tran is scarfed. Well now with this information, I can make a safe switch to…

dr4g0n switched in Shedinja.
Kr1ptonyte switched in Rayquaza.
Pointed stones dug into Rayquaza.
Rayquaza lost 25% of its health.
Rain continues to fall.

Shedinja – 100%
Rayquaza – 75%

Shedinja…which is now facing Rayquaza…shit. Well, I have no idea what to do now, so I make a blind switch back to Garchomp. I figure Rayquaza isn’t about to Outrage on Shedinja, and Jolly Chomp outspeeds Ray for an easy Outrage kill.

dr4g0n switched in Garchomp.
Rayquaza used Overheat.
It’s not very effective…
Garchomp lost 25% of its health.
dr4g0n’s Garchomp fainted.
Rain continues to fall.

Garchomp – 0%
Rayquaza – 75%

3-3

Overheat? That was… unexpected. The benefit of surprise, I guess. Here, I believe that this Ray is a boosting physical attacker, using Overheat to take out walls who would block Outrage. Well, I can’t afford it getting a DD or SD at this late stage in the game.

dr4g0n sent out Kyogre.
Kyogre’s Drizzle caused a storm!

Out comes SpecsOgre. The only question here is…will he stay or switch? If he stays, Ice Beam kills him. If he switches, Water Spout draws a Deoxys or Heatran kill. Here I can play conservatively and Ice Beam, or take a risk and smack something really hard. In the end I decide…

Kr1ptonyte switched in Heatran.
Pointed stones dug into Heatran.
Heatran lost 12% of its health.
Kyogre used Ice Beam.
It’s not very effective…
Heatran lost 14% of its health.
Rain continues to fall.

Kyogre – 93%
Heatran – 56%

That I can’t take the risk. Of course, Kr1ptonyte coolly makes the move that I was too afraid to count on. In hindsight, Thunder was probably the best move for me to make. It kills anything he has left and would have lead to an easy win.
Well, I don’t know what’s coming, but it sure as hell isn’t afire move in rain, so here comes Shedinja.

dr4g0n switched in Shedinja.
Heatran used Dark Pulse.
It’s super effective!
Shedinja lost 100% of its health.
dr4g0n’s Shedinja fainted.
Rain continues to fall.

Shedinja – 0%
Heatran – 56%

2-3

Damn. Another brilliant prediction by Kr1ptonyte leaves Shedinja a little, transparent ghosty blob on the ground. Well, a free switch comes easily to Kyogre, and this time, I’m not predicting anything in particular. Instead, I play conservatively and Surf. Here, I realize that the more my opponent is forced to switch, the better, as SR gives me an enormous advantage at this point in the game.

dr4g0n sent out Kyogre.
Kyogre’s Drizzle caused a storm!

Kyogre – 93%
Rayquaza – 1%

Well, Ray survives with a measly 1%, poised to do a great deal of damage. I’m not particularly fond of the word risk right now, so I make a switch to my own Ray. Extremespeed should be an easy kill.

dr4g0n switched in Rayquaza*.
Rayquaza used Thunder
Rayquaza* lost 36% of its health.
Rain continues to fall.

Rayquaza – 1%
Rayquaza* - 31%

Oh…apparently not boosting. Well, I think this Ray must be scarfed, since it did so little to me. Still, Extremespeed makes this an easy kill, so that’s what I do. His Ray’s dead due to SR anyway.

Rayquaza* used Extremespeed.
Rayquaza lost 1% of its health.
Kr1ptonyte’s Rayquaza fainted.
Rayquaza lost 10% of its health.

Yep, like I thought. Easy. Now to see his switch in…

Kr1ptonyte sent out Deoxys-f.
Pointed stones dug into Deoxys-f.
Deoxys-f lost 12% of its health.

OK. Now this gets dangerous. Due to Life Orb, my Ray only has a few attacks left. Extremespeed takes care of Deoxys, but a Heatran switch leaves me in severe trouble. Outrage has no trouble with Heatran, but leaves me very vulnerable to Ice Beam from Deoxys. Now, the match is climaxing, and the tension is so thick, you could walk on it. Well, I finally decide to play conservatively – again – and …

Kr1ptonyte switched in Heatran.

So…can Kyogre take both pokes out? There’s not a snowflakes chance in hell of it outspeeding either, but I did make some heavy investment in HP and Sp. Def so maybe it can survive two hits?

dr4g0n wins!
Yes!!! Hell Yeah! GAME WINNER!!!!!
That was one hell of a match. Very few of the moves made were completely predictable and we were predicting at every turn. GG Kr1ptonyte. That was one of the best matches of my life.
Props
+ The unpredictability. Both players kept each other on their toes, and the element of surprise shows its value, each of the surprise moves taking victims.
+ Forretress surviving a 4x effective fire move under sunlight
+ Gengar for infinitely outclassing Mewtwo in unpredictability and awesomeness; and for taking a double kill without using an attacking move (ignore counter…it doesn’t count)
+ SR for being so goddam broken
+ Kyogre for surviving so many hits to draw the first and final KO’s
+ Kr1ptonyte for a good game
+ The Gods of the Hax for almost no hax this game
Slops
-Groudon for learning fire punch without me knowing
-The Gods of the Hax for targeting me with the only real hax of the game (will-o-wisp’s miss)
-Whoever said Heatran was useless under perpetual rain is useless deserves to be shot…several times…before being eaten, shat out, then shot again…and burnt. Definitely burnt
Post any comments, questions, desired revisions, etc.

Font tags. Fix.

Also, I read it anyway, and not a bad warstory. You did get outpredicted to hell, but you did a great job playing intelligently anyway ad coming back from a pretty bad deficit. I liked it.

Grab the sprites from pokemonelite2000.net and wrap some

Hm, a really good and well played match on both ends. I'm glad to see some nonuber pokes (Shedinja excluded) getting the spotlight in this high stakes tier. Definitely worth the time put in reading it.

Critique (kinda)
- Unless you're CBed IMO Flamethrower > Fire Punch because you OHKO Forry. Oh wait that was the opponent's Groudon...
- Groudon has no Earthquake?
- Thunder Rayquaza O_O

But either way the double kill from Gengar was nice. It could've probably been more suspenseful in the end if you manipulated your text in some way as it was the deciding moment. Warstory's pretty decent, and I like it. The prediction wars are interesting.

This is not a very specific piece of criticism but one that should go for war stories in general: war story != battle log + comments. A war story is supposed to be a story + some battle log where it is useful. I am reluctant to read this one simply because I see every single turn described in here, and then some comments by the author...that just doesn't flow.

First, I was going to comment as to why there would be a started Wob, when Deoxys-e leads are running rampant with Taunt. But then I was amazed by those god-damn sweet prediction skills by Kr1ptonyte. Good match

It's was a great match, and now that you've made the comments better it was a great Warstory as well.
