Arena:
Following the directions given by the ASB Gym League representative, you travel towards the Hoenn desert. After a few days of walking against the wind and scaling the northeastern mountains watching over that sand-blasted place, you find yourself looking at yet another arid desert - but the Gym is nowhere in sight!

Could it be that the League representative is wrong? You try calling with your phone, just to be sure, but the telecommunications company did not extend their coverage to this forsaken, secluded lands. Checking at your provisions, you estimate that you and your Pokemon can survive on your own for another 3 days before you have to journey back. Resigning yourself to another hot week, you walk into the desert. After all, the sky is clear and there's an oasis in sight so why not do a little exploration?

You find yourself regretting that decision 2 days later. Despite being seemingly close, the oasis eludes you - shimmering not so far off, tempting, taunting. What's worse, you wake up on the 3rd day to find yourself half buried and choking in sand - a sandstorm! Struggling to get yourself up, you flail about blindly, the sand stinging every inch of your exposed skin. You can't even reach your buried Pokeballs! All of a sudden, a hand grabs at your collar while a voice yells, "Don't move!" You find yourself being hoisted out of the sand and facing a heavily veiled - and robed - man. "Follow me!" You have no choice - your saviour seems to be native to the desert and any place is certainly better than where you were.

After some time, you reach the man's tent, the entrance facing the leeway of the winds. Pushing yourself inside, you are surprised to see another person present - or rather, guest. "Why, hello there! Got caught up in the storm?"

You nod, then suddenly realise that the man who helped you didn't enter behind you. "Looking for Texas, I suppose? He's the one who helped you. I think he's out again - what business he's up to outside, I don't know."

Sitting on an empty couch, you take the offered waterskin and drink gratefully. "Who is he, and why are you here?"

"Me? Oh I'm a trader. Just stopping by to procure and sell wares to a regular customer, you know. As for Texas - that man - his full name is Texas 'Cloverleaf', son of Ksatria. Now don't go asking me who his father is - I have no idea about that. Point is, he lives here, because apparently he does not want to leave. Again, he has his reasons, and he keeps them to himself. I can tell you why he got that middle name, though - it's a reference to the symbolic ring he wears on his left middle finger, a keepsake from his mother, whom I heard is a native of these lands as well."

"So, uhm, do you know anything about a Dragon Gym in these parts?"

The trader grinned, "Nah, I don't. Texas might, though - knows this region like the back of his hand."

You have to wait until late night before Texas returns, however, and upon hearing your question, his reply was curt. "I'll take you there at sunrise tomorrow - travelling in sandstorm at night is dangerous." And so you have no choice but to satisfy yourself with that answer. tossing and turning in the night as the winds howl incessantly outside.

The next day, the three of you set out, the trader tagging along because "I'd like to see what this Dragon Gym is like". It doesn't take much time before you arrive at the elusive oasis, where the sands glitter like the scales of dragons. Suddenly, Texas whirls upon you.

"Do you swear, upon the Almighty, that you come for the Dragon Gym?"

Caught by surprise, you stammer, "Y-y-yes."

Texas' robe is tossed behind his back at that statement, revealing the Badge he keeps pinned on his tunic.

"Then I swear upon the All-Seeing, the Almighty, the All-Forgiving, that this is the Oasis of Dragons, home to the Dragons of the Sands, and Dragon Gym to the ASB League. I am the Leader, Texas son of Ksatria, and I accept your challenge."

"Should you prove yourself worthy, this Cloverleaf Badge of the Desert is yours. However, before we start, there are things that you must know."

"This Oasis is the sacred land of my mother's tribe, and the ancient djinni guard it fiercely. Should anyone invoke their protection, they will hide the person from an intruder's view with a sandstorm fiercer than any found in Hoenn. Also, the waters here are blessed - they will not freeze easily. Now, arm yourself - by the Almighty and his Prophet, prepare to face the might of the Dragons!"

Otherwise Dig and Dive will miss. Ground moves can still hit. Levitate Pokemon will retain the Levitate trait when they use Skill Swap on an enemy, and will steal the opponent's ability (the user can specify if they want a foe or ally to gain Levitate from a Skill Swap.) Nature: Timid
+15% Speed, +12% Accuracy, -1 Atk

Type: Normal
Normal: Normal STAB; adapt comfortably to any surrounding after 3 actions. Able to use Outrage without losing focus.

Abilities: Adaptability / Download / Analytic [DW]
Adaptability (Passive):
The moves that match this Pokemon’s type have their Base Attack Power increased by two (2).

Download (Passive):
At the beginning of the match, the Pokemon analyzes the opponent and downloads data that lets it deal more damage. This Pokemon receives a one (1) stage boost on the offense that strikes an opponent’s weaker defense stat. (e.g. does more damage with special attacks when facing Aggron, which has higher Defense, and attack when facing Hypno, which has higher Special Defense. For ties, Special Attack is raised.) This boost is maintained at the end of each round.

Analytic (Passive) [DW]:
If this Pokemon attacks after its target during an action, its attacks have two (2) more Base Attack Power.

I am really surprised at this. Texas rarely gets visitors - in fact, I'm the only known "outsider" to actually be around him regularly. It's my work, after all - I bring in things from the outside world, and I trade it with him for the exotic spices and wood that he foraged in his daily activities. He tolerates me during my stay, because I've known well enough that as a peddler, I should accustom myself to the traditions and lore of the local people. But this blonde kid... Very odd for him to venture so far, even for a Pokemon trainer. I was wondering how his parents would react to this when Texas threw me a coin and bade me to flip it. Well, then, I muttered a quick prayer, and watched the coin flashed the light of the sun...

RNG Roll (LEAD) [<=5000 TEXAS; >5000 DOGFISH]: 5325/10000 (DOGFISH)

A few flavour pointers if you will:

  • Texas will invoke the name of the Almighty in every order.
  • I am the referee, and the trader who witnessed the fight.
  • Desert environment means that either you wear head to toe, or you bare. Choose your dress code.

Dogfish releases and equips
Texas does the same, and bows head in prayer
Dogfish clasp his hands together
I watch the tides of sands

If Double Team, Rock Slide that action

Slasher-Haxorus came out with a traditional war dance, swaying his body as a display of fitness and strength. But he hesitated when he saw Teresa-Hydreigon. Despite that odd human's dress and apron, he could smell very well that she is a female, and it is not the code of a Crusader to take up arms against an innocent female... However, the description is quickly dispelled when the fetish hydra fires a pulse right at his midriff. Resolving to the act of fighting a female, Haxorus weaved forward with perfect balance and skill.

I should probably add a bit of detail here - I am a travelling peddler, and I've seen quite a few solitary and herd-living Haxorus in the wild. There are mostly two kinds of Haxoruses that are the champions of their herd - the ones who can fell a tree the width of a Graveller with one stroke of their thick tusks and brute strength, and ones like Slasher, who prefer to hit fast with razor-sharp tusks. Even as he lessen the strength behind his blows, in hopes to intimidate rather than injure, Teresa-Hydreigon's wounds are nothing to scoff at - any lesser Pokemon would've not been standing after a mere 4 strikes. But obviously, Teresa-Hydreigon is not a normal Pokemon. She is, after all, from a species renowned for their demonic appearance and terrifying demeanor. Such reputation does not come without a solid basis in their fearsome capabilities. Not to mention, any Pokemon who dresses up like a human maid would obviously have something that sets it above its kin.

And it looks like Teresa-Hydreigon is a born fighter against that which follows light. Against the sharp edge of Haxorus, she decides to take the honour-fighting foe by any means necessary. Screaming blasphemy, her outrage caught Slasher-Haxorus slightly off guard - the latter never expected such conviction and malediction off a female, anyway. Had Texas not retrieved his Pokemon as soon as he sensed the anti-god aura, Slasher-Haxorus would've suffered a much worse fate...

"Good, Teresa," murmured dogfish, eyes glinting. "Now to see what happens next..."

Take your rest Haxorus, the Almighty forsaw that course of actions but elected to plow ahead anyway.

Maleficient takes your place and will represent the might of dragons in simple fashion.

Ordained upon by the Almighty, Texas was compelled to fight fire with fire, as it is obvious to him that he can no longer fight a devout's war against such a dangerous non-believer. Out came Maleficent-Hydreigon, this one green instead of blue (at least she's not dressed up in a nurse uniform). Holding an open palm up to the sky, Texas bade Maleficient-Hydreigon summon powerful Tailwinds. The incoming gales did not blow the sands and sting, yet dogfish had to shield his face with his headscarf nevertheless. By the time he looked back up, Teresa-Hydreigon lies fainted.

"Come then, dogfish, you've unleashed the furies of the Sands. By the Almighty, let's see if you can still stand one of yours." Dogfish is sweating slightly due to his clothing - a seasoned desert traveler never wraps his whole body up in thick, heavy cloth - so I offered some cold drinks. Despite the beads of prespiration, the young blonde man still retains a calm demeanour, and thanked me - although he didn't hear about the price as of that time.

ROUND 3

Hello guys! Mr. ZhengTann is facing a terrible indisgestion right now. I will serve as your temporary subref until Zt puts out all the terrible monsters that live inside of him and come back.

After drawing first blood, the challenger, Mr. lucky bastard Dogfish44 sends out Nimbus the Cyclohm with Expert Belt to face the Leader's Hydreigon.

Maleficent begins the round by playing creative dragon with a Dragon Pulse while Nimbus uses Thunder Wave to paralyse the Hydreigon. It appears that the challenger is betting on some hax to occur here *insert joke here*.

And guess what?

It happened! On the second turn, Maleficent was fully paralysed! Being easy prey to Nimbus's first Dragon Pulse.

Finally, both dragons trade away Dragon Pulses with equal results.

With the third round finished, an early hax puts the challenger back in the lead and considering how dull and boring and stable the next matchups appear to be, the Leader needs to use his best tricks to turn things around once again.

Urgh, I knew I never should've tried drinking Camerupt milk with ice. But wow, that frozen oil lamp actually did work! Thanks, Frosty Djin- hey where did it go?

From Nimbus-Cyclohm's maw streamed a third wave of Dragon Pulse, this time knocking Maleficient-Hydreigon sprawling upon the sands, for the attack scored a critical hit right between the joints of his three necks. The cloud hydra thundered, sure that it's dark counterpart will be finished for sure before it could get back up again. But Maleficient-Hydreigon did not rose from the sands. It remained prostrated, if a dragon could be said to prostrate. Texas bow his head in prayer as well. "O the Great Almighty, your children have thus stumbled. But by Your grace, we will rise, and we will fight in Your name 'til our last breath!"

As those words left Texas' lips, the sky darkened, and black mist instead of yellow sand swirled upon the oasis. "I call upon the stars themselves, to render the judgement of the Almighty!" With that second proclamation, Maleficient-Hydreigon's essence went supernova and burst skywards, forming a large cloud of Meteors. The last thing Dogfish saw was a barrage of the red and green dragonfire raining upon Nimbus-Cyclohm, their heat forcing him to stagger back. Then all of a sudden the skies cleared again, and there was Nimbus-Cyclohm, very much charred and unconscious, though fortunately still alive.

"Think you to challenge the Almighty's left and right arm with but their pale shadows? Your dragons have fallen, stranger. What have you next?"

To which Dogfish replied, "Ah, but I did not come with dragons alone...."

"OK Data, prepare all systems for offense. The ever classic Expert Belt should suffice."

For reference, am I correct in assuming that the BAP mentioned in the arena description excludes items? Also, how do combos work - do you look at each individual move and modify, or is it the entire combo's BAP?

BAP does exclude item alterations, I'll order and decide on combos when I'm awake later.

Edit: Combos treat each of the constituent parts separately (e.g. Icy Wind+Blizzard is a Water+Ice type combo) and follows normal combination rules

"... A duck, you said."
"Why, of course. This duck has been with me for a long time, and has seen the fall of many dragons."
"Because they are impious. Come, meet my last."

"As for you, Maleficient, be at peace," murmured Texas, "For surely your service in His name has already been glorious indeed," Dogfish, on the other hand, muttered as well. "This is definitely going to be a quandary. Blizzard can only carry Duckbot so far..."

In a typical style, Dogfish took Texas' example, and used Maleficient-Hydreigon's moment of helplessness to create a Substitute of itself, in preparation for the final showdown. The last Signal Beam fired, it's light breaking the distant mirage. Texas' hydra fell with a terrible cry, and I bait my breath, wondering if there's a way to enter this Expert Belt market and make myself a small fortune.
