Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker

Ships tomorrow. I've been playing Dragon Quest / Dragon Quest Monsters since the first GBC installment way back in 1999 and I'm an avid fan of the series. Given the nature of Smogon, I'm sure that there are some other DQMers out there that will be buying it (I'm looking at you Kiku).

One of the coolest features that I've read about so far is the wifi support. The online mode in DQM:J functions a lot like the wifi battle tower in D/P. You download a set of user-created teams and see if you can beat it; the more you win, the higher your overall rank becomes (The world leader boards are displayed ingame) and the better your prizes for winning get.

And that's where I'll get to the point. Although there is (to my knowledge) no direct player-to-player Wifi play, there still exists potential for somewhat of a competitive metagame, albeit not nearly on the same level as Pokemon. I know it's jumping the gun a bit as the game still hasn't been released in the US, but would any DQMers here be willing to get together and discuss tactics, breeding tricks, etc. once the game comes out? Smogon seems like a good place to ask.

Oh, and if you haven't heard much about this game yet and are curious, check the IGN page here. It's a fantastic series that most lovers of Pokemon would also enjoy.

I think I'll end this thread with an image that shows just how much DQM kicks ass.

I remember the old games. Quite a lot of fun. I played both of them and bred all of the monsters, so you can be sure that I'll play this new one for the DS as well. This game is gonna rock.

Ooh, I played DWM2 before (Cobi version I think), and I really enjoyed this. Really hoping that this one will turn out to be a good game too! ^_^

Oh my gooooooooooooooood

I'm sure I'll have the unpopular opinion here but I've always prefered the in-game version of Dragon Warrior Monsters to Pokemon(which really only hooked me because of the Player vs Player) so I am really excited about this since I didn't realize it was coming out!! I looked into it a bit, looks like the cast of available monsters has been changed a bit and that the skill system is a little different(while similar) but it'll be nice to have some new stuff to mess with, I guess.

I remember first running into the original DWM shortly after it came out when some friends on a comedy Digimon forum were talking about it and it quickly became #2 on my list of video games all time I think(to Final Fantasy Tactics), at least in terms of time spent playing. I always felt the sequel was inferior but still a great game and I'll be excited to get a new game after so many years!

I only played one once, and I remember getting some creature called a..."Mad Knight" ?

It was a really cool game, though.

This'll be pretty awesome. I played both DWM1 and 2, and they were both pretty cool. Heh, I loved Metaly, that monster was super-duper. :]

Will hopefully be epic...

Only bad thing is, apparently it's very short...we're talking REALLY short here, a few solid hours gameplay is all.

I still haven't got a hold of a copy of the game yet but I noticed a nice post browsing gamefaqs some of you might want to see(bare with the questionable quality)

Missing a bunch of cool old monsters but at least my buddy Roboster is back <3(well sort of, anyway)

I've done like two hours of nothing but leveling so far without really accomplishing anything so I'm assuming by gameplay you mean like actually doing stuff. Which yeah that sucks.

So far I feel like I'm 13 again and playing DWM for the first time. This is a pretty good trip down memory lane. I started with Platypuck and picked up a Slime and a Dracky as well as a few other monsters. I need to figure out how to fuse stuff so I can get some cooler monsters.

I can see it being a pretty short game if you just blasted through it but I've already bogged myself down soooo much just experimenting with breeding better duders that I know it's going to take me awhile to beat this game completely. Really, that's how it is with all DQM games though, isn't it?

The new system of transferring skills from the parents down to the child is weird though. Can a monster have any more than 3 "schools" of abilities?

EDIT: And what is the deal with the skeleton dragon thing in the quarry place on the sand island at night? It absolutely raped my team.

Oh lawd, this brings back memories of DWM2: CJ for me, I ended up somehow breeding a Divinegon and thinking to myself "Hey wait a minute isn't this thing the equivalent of God in DW3?"

...Speaking of which where the fuck is Divinegon on the Dragons/lords lists, I want that bastard NOW.

oh my god oh my god oh my god

GOLDSLIME! holy shit goldslime was my BOY back then. i used GoldSlime as a handle for prety much everything. God I love that monster.

This is as good of a resource as I've found so far(which frankly isn't very good): http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/ds/file/933956/46550

I'm strongly considering purchasing the strategy guide if it has a breeding section like the previous ones because without a reliable way to get good monsters out of synthesizing the game loses a lot of its flavor, I think.

I got the game a two days ago for what it's worth, chilling on Palaish Isle currently with four pieces of darkonithing. My party is kind of awful since I don't want to put too much time into it until I have something to aim for.

Party
King slime+2 L10
Hawkhart L14
Dragon slime+1 L8

Comedy Terrible Bench
Spitnik L12
Firespirit L10
Dracky L18

Yeah I've been searching diligently for some image-heavy Japanese site with some breeding info, because the existing Gfaqs guides are extremely incomplete.

I'm currently trying to find out how to get Kandar. I'm like 55% complete on getting Duran though (he was the shit back in DWM). This new skill system is weird though, it's a lot more complicated than before.

ive only got 2 crystals atm, half way through that stupid garden maze thing on the third island, been power leveling on the dessert demons (and occasionally trying to scout...6%:( ) though trying to breed some cool stuff. my team atm:

diggit the mole: lvl 16, 120 atk with sacred spear:)
joker the omg who the fuck wants to look at a featherless chicken: lvl11
slimer the wild slime: +2 lvl 8, with the heal, agil boost and def boost skills.

actually i just found out i can raise my tension and it works for scouting too. so the 6% on the dessert demon became a 46% and now i have one:)

How did you go about making that?

Currently I have a She Slime, Hacksaurus and the third iteration of Wulfspade which is called Cluboon. I've been working on breeding up to some kind of cool dragon monster and once I get one set then I'll start working on a better slime. This is tough to do without knowing what to get and what to aim for.

To advance in ranks for different schools of skills, you need to master it then breed.

For example to get Attack Boost III...
Attack Boost I - 50 points to master then breed -> Attack Boost II
Attack Boost II - 75 points to master then breed -> Attack boost III

It also works if you breed two monsters with a combined 50 points in the same school, provided 50 points is the amount needed to master it normally (i.e. Attack Boost) Unfortunately not too many schools seem able to advance in this way.

PS-For me Lethal Armour was Restless Armour + Octavian Sentry. Champion is a sweet school, at really high ranks it gives you a spell which increases every allies' attack. Hohoho

how do you make a king slime, i need one for the 8th proficiancy test, or where could i catch one at.

KingSlime can be scouted where you take the Scout's pledge I believe, or have read but haven't checked. (keep zoning in and out from the rope thing you leave the cave from since its like a 10% spawn or something)

It can also be combined by having Slime as the parents and grandparents (ie, Slime + Slime = Slime +1, and another Slime + Slime = Slime+1, and breed the two Slime+1s) which is how I got mine !!

I liked DWM2, I had both versions. I believe at one point, I had every monster available except for those "Boss" fusions. I used an entire team of Slimes at one point too (one of which was the king of Slime, GoldSlime :D).
