[SET COMMENTS]
Drednaw carves out a niche on offensive teams by being a strong physical Water-type that switches into Salazzle and overwhelms many of the traditional Water-type checks in the tier such as Vileplume and Jellicent due to its powerful Rock-type STAB moves. While Stone Edge is generally preferred, Head Smash can be used in tandem with Swords Dance to secure important KOs on common walls Vileplume and Jellicent without the need to rely on Life Orb. Superpower lets Drednaw threaten Copperajah, Snorlax, and Scrafty. Alternatively, Stealth Rock, is a viable option due to Drednaw’s ability to force switches, and it can provide offensive teams with role compression. Life Orb lets Drednaw secure some of the previously mentioned KOs with Stone Edge and Superpower. Alternatively, Lum Berry lets Drednaw avoid being crippled by Will-O-Wisp from the likes of Sableye and Jellicent, setting up on and KOing them in return. As mentioned earlier, Head Smash should be run over Stone Edge when using Lum Berry to OHKO Jellicent and Vileplume. While Shell Armor’s passive effect of preventing critical hits is nice, Swift Swim is a solid choice if struggling with rain teams.
Drednaw flourishes on Sticky Web teams. This makes Vikavolt an excellent partner, as it can set up Sticky Web and provide Drednaw with ample opportunities to come in and wreak havoc via slow Volt Switch. Late-game cleaners such as Virizion, Passimian, and Ninetales appreciate Drednaw’s ability to bait in and eliminate Pokemon they struggle with, such as Jellicent and Vileplume. Drednaw’s reliance on entry hazards to function and its weakness to Fighting mean it also appreciates spinblocking from the likes of Silvally-Ghost and Decidueye, which are also able to provide Drednaw with momentum through U-turn. Drednaw struggles to break through Gastrodon, so Pokemon that counter it, such as Virizion, Drampa, and Rillaboom, are appreciated.
