[Overview]
The addition of Generation V brought about many changes, some offensive and others defensive. Drilbur came, and is now one of the premier offensive Pokemon in the Little Cup metagame. With a high Attack, a decent Speed, a large movepool including Swords Dance, and an amazing ability in Sand Rush, which doubles its Speed in a sandstorm, Drilbur has all the tools it needs to sweep opposing teams. It also works well on defensive sandstorm teams with access to Rapid Spin. Though Eviolite poses a problem, with proper team support, Drilbur becomes one of the most threatening Pokemon in the tier.
[SET]
name: All Out Offense
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Rock Slide
move 3: Shadow Claw
move 4: Rapid Spin / X-Scissor
item: Life Orb
ability: Sand Rush
nature: Adamant
evs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 212 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
- hits 19 atk and 16 speed unboosted (32 in sandstorm)
- due to speed can revenge kill nearly anything
- 2hkos nearly the whole meta (bronzor and lileep being exceptions)
- Earthquake for STAB
- Rock Slide for Flying and Bug types
- Shadow Claw for Missy, Gastly, and Duskull
- X-Scissor for Shroomish who otherwise walls entire set
[Additional Comments]
- hits 18 atk and 17 speed if using Jolly but Drilbur prefers having the extra power over speed (which is only useful for outspeeding opposing Drilbur)
- needs sandstorm support
- appreciates entry hazards if it's going for a end game sweep
- 236 Atk / 116 Def / 132 Spe is an alternate spread but only hits 15 speed
- Hippopotas to set up Sandstorm and Stealth Rock
- Lileep to take Water and Grass attacks
- With Rapid Spin, Larvesta is a great partner to take out Mienfoo, but also weak to Water attacks
- Substitute beats Sucker Punchers (namely Murkrow)
[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Rock Slide
move 4: Shadow Claw / Protect
item: Eviolite / Life Orb
ability: Sand Rush
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 212 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
- hits 19 atk and 16 speed unboosted (32 in sandstorm)
- hits 38 atk after Swords Dance
- Eviolite gives it extra bulk to set up easier
- Earthquake for STAB
- Rock Slide for Flying and Bug types
- Shadow Claw for Missy, Gastly, and Duskull
- Protect for Fake Out users
[Additional Comments]
- Jolly gives an extra point of speed in exchange for a point of Atk but is pretty pointless
- Hippopotas to set up Sandstorm and Stealth Rock
- Lileep to take Water and Grass attacks
- Substitute in the last slot helps with Sucker Punch
[Other Options]
- Sandstorm doubles Drilbur's speed and is the main reason to use it
- Rapid Spin can be used on to clear hazards
- X-scissor destroys Shroomish and gets neutral hits on weakened Natu and Murkrow
- Sand Force raises EQ and Rock Slide power but Drilbur prefers the speed boost instead
- Jolly over Adamant nature for extra speed to outside of sandstorm or to revenge other Drilbur in a sandstorm
- Substitute helps beat Murkrow with Sucker Punch
- Toxic can cripple counters such as Lileep and Snover
[Checks and Counters]
- Bronzor due to Levitate and only takes neutral damage from any other attack
- Grass types (Shroomish, Ferroseed, Lileep)
- Snover changes weather
- Ponyta can use Sunny Day to change the weather but can't take a hit to switch in
- Mienfoo and Croagunk can use Fake Out, Timburr can use Mach Punch, Tirtouga can use Aqua Jet, and Murkrow can use Sucker Punch to revenge kill
- Bulky Waters can survive a hit if at high health from Eviolite Drilbur and normally KO back
[Unreleased]
Drilbur gets Mold Breaker as a Dreamworld ability. As good of an ability it is, it is severely outclassed by Sand Rush because Drilbur would rather have the Speed boost than be able to hit Bronzor, it's main counter with Earthquake.
