VGC Dual Primal Power

Hey guys! For those that don’t know me I’m an ok Battle Spot and VGC player. Since I also like doubles formats more I also badly play some DOU. I finally decided to write a RMT since I have a team that’s been doing fairly well, but I still feel it has problems and room for improvement. So far this has gotten me 4th at a midseason showdown and 81st in the world and 19th in the US in the latest International Challenge.

Team at a Glance

I started the team off with Cresselia and the Primals because Cresselia provides excellent support for both with speed control, Gravity to make PBlades and Opulse always hit, Helping Hand, and Skill Swap to change the weather. I had already on a fast Cresselia with Icy Wind because I though a fast Cresselia would surprise people when I Skill Swap or set up Gravity before my primals move. It can also cause people to think my team is a Trick Room team because it has some slow pokemon on it.

I then added Salamence to help my Rayquaza match up which I was fairly weak to. It also gives me a solid Groudon check and is faster than most of the metagame.

The last two members were originally Thundurus-I and Ferrothorn. I needed a good Xerneas check and Ferrothorn is one of the best available and Xern doesn't like being paralyzed by Thundy. They also provided good pressure against Kyogre which the first four struggle with. I replaced them because Ferrothorn never really did much for me and Thundurus was too frail while not providing enough offensuve pressure for my liking.

I added Raichu because I still wanted a way to OHKO faster, less bulky Kyogre and paralysis support. I also find the Fake Out and Feint support it provides very helpful. I chose Mawile because I still needed another Xerneas check and I was struggling to reliably beat Mega Salamence.

kyogre.gif

Kyogre @ Blue Orb
Ability: Drizzle
Level: 50
EVs: 236 HP / 92 Def / 44 SpA / 4 SpD / 132 Spe
Modest Nature
- Origin Pulse
- Thunder
- Ice Beam
- Protect

I decided I wanted to use a bulkier Kyogre because it fits my playstyle better and it can outspeed most things after an Icy Wind anyway. I chose Thunder over another Water-STAB because I wanted my Kyogre to win the mirror most of the time, and I felt that having a middle speed Kyogre was not the best for getting Water Spouts off. This EV spread is fairly complicated but the two main things it does are outspeed Mega Salamence after an Icy Wind Drop and KO Mega Kangaskhan after it takes recoil from Double Edge assuming both are a minimum roll.

  • 44+ SpA Primal Kyogre Origin Pulse vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Mega Kangaskhan in Heavy Rain: 133-157 (73.4 - 86.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • 252 Atk Parental Bond Mega Kangaskhan Double-Edge vs. 236 HP / 92 Def Primal Kyogre: 150-177 (73.1 - 86.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • 252 Atk Life Orb Mega Rayquaza Dragon Ascent vs. 236 HP / 92 Def Primal Kyogre: 168-199 (81.9 - 97%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • 4 SpA Thundurus Thunderbolt vs. 236 HP / 4 SpD Primal Kyogre: 84-98 (40.9 - 47.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
  • 204+ Atk Ferrothorn Power Whip vs. 236 HP / 92 Def Primal Kyogre: 170-204 (82.9 - 99.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • 44+ SpA Primal Kyogre Thunder vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Primal Kyogre: 104-124 (50.2 - 59.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

groudon.gif

Groudon @ Red Orb
Ability: Drought
Level: 50
EVs: 76 HP / 172 Atk / 4 Def / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Precipice Blades
- Fire Punch
- Rock Slide
- Protect

I chose a faster Groudon because I wanted at least one of my Primals to be faster than Smeargle. I've also found that Groudon is bulky enough for my liking without much investment. I chose physical because it pairs better with Gravity support. I've considered changing this to Jolly but I'm not sure the I would like Groudon being faster than Cresselia.

  • 252+ SpA Primal Kyogre Ice Beam vs. 76 HP / 4 SpD Primal Groudon: 78-92 (42.1 - 49.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
  • 252 SpA Aerilate Mega Salamence Hyper Voice vs. 76 HP / 4 SpD Primal Groudon: 76-91 (41 - 49.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
  • 172+ Atk Primal Groudon Precipice Blades vs. 0 HP / 36 Def Xerneas: 103-123 (51.2 - 61.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • 172+ Atk Primal Groudon Helping Hand Precipice Blades vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Primal Groudon: 204-242 (98.5 - 116.9%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO
  • 172+ Atk Primal Groudon Precipice Blades vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Primal Kyogre: 111-132 (53.6 - 63.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

raichu.gif

Raichu @ Zap Plate
Ability: Lightning Rod
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Volt Tackle
- Fake Out
- Feint
- Thunder Wave < Nuzzle

I don't know why but I really like using Raichu in VGC 16. Volt Tackle kills Kyogre while the rest of the moves support the team. I have T-Wave because I don't have access to any with Nuzzle right now (thankfully it hasn't lost me any games).

  • 252 Atk Zap Plate Raichu Volt Tackle vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Primal Kyogre: 210-248 (101.4 - 119.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

cresselia.gif

Cresselia @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Levitate
Level: 50
EVs: 228 HP / 68 Def / 4 SpA / 4 SpD / 204 Spe
Timid Nature
- Icy Wind
- Helping Hand
- Gravity
- Skill Swap

I explained why I wanted a faster Cress earlier on. I chose Icy Wind over T-Wave because it was important to me to try to make it so that my primals could outspeed both opponents at once. The speed outspeeds Adamant max speed Landorus-T by 1 making it outspeed neutral primals by two and the HP maximizes recovery from the Sitrus Berry which also makes it an even number for Super Fang.

  • 252 Atk Parental Bond Mega Kangaskhan Double-Edge vs. 228 HP / 68 Def Cresselia: 123-145 (54.9 - 64.7%) -- 3.2% chance to 2HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery
  • 252 SpA Primal Groudon Helping Hand Eruption (150 BP) vs. 228 HP / 4 SpD Cresselia in Harsh Sun: 190-225 (84.8 - 100.4%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

mawile.gif

Mawile @ Mawilite
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Iron Head
- Play Rough
- Protect
- Sucker Punch

The last two members are the ones I tend to use the least and not just because they're they're both megas. I tend to use the first four mons very often. I've considered using Ferrothorn in this slot again as a Xerneas counter but Mawile also does better against Kangaskhan which does a lot of damge to my team. I've also considered Fire Fang since my team is very bad against Ferrothorn. I was also lazy and didn't feel like making a new/specific ev spread or changing Mawile to it.

salamence.gif

Salamence @ Salamencite
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 20 Atk / 236 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Double-Edge
- Hyper Voice
- Draco Meteor
- Protect

I only usually use Salamence in Ray Ogre match ups but I'm not sure why. Hits fast and decently hard but I always seem to think something else is more valuable. I've also considered a Fire move on Mence but haven't tested it yet.

  • 20 Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Amoonguss: 222-264 (100.4 - 119.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Leads other than these are when I'm trying to specifically counter a predicted lead.

raichu.gif
This is the lead I usually use against Big 6 because it doesn't have any terrible lead match ups. Raichu is free to paralyze things or ko TFlame if Groudon and Smeargle aren't on the field. This is also my best lead against Xerneas+Smeargle but still usually ends at best with a +2/+2/+2 Xerneas with half health on the field. In general Raichu's support moves help Groudon get free damage.

kyogre.gif
These leads are probably my most common overall. I usually try and use it in a way that clears the way for the other primal to sweep. These leads are also able to almost always win the weather war since I get my weather if I'm slower and Skill Swap before I move if I'm faster. These leads tend to be safe against anything except Trick Room because I rely on Icy Wind as speed control and Ray Ogre because they negate Desolate Land and can ko Kyogre or Cresselia with a double target.
xerneas.gif

Xerneas is one of the biggest problems for me when using this team especially when I don't have Mawile or it's paired with Groudon or set up support like Smeargle or Amoonguss. My team lacks the bulk to take multiple hits from it and lacks the raw power to prevent it setting up. I can usually win if I get it paralyzed with Raichu's Nuzzle though. A majority of my losses come from this deer. Xerneas is the biggest reason why I struggle with the Big 6 match up.

ferrothorn.gif

Ferrothorn is another huge problem for my team because the only real way I have to beat it is with Groudon's Fire Punch or repeated attacks from Kyogre and Salamence. I've been considering trying Fire moves on Mawile and Salamence for it. Ferrothorn is especially threatening in Trick Room where it attacks first.

kyogre.gif

I don't know why I struggle with RayOgre as much as I do considering considering I have good checks in Raichu and Salamence. Maybe just because Ferrothorn is a common partner for them. I usually bring Kyogre/Cresselia/Salamence/Raichu if they don't have Ferrothorn and Groudon/Cresselia/Salamence/Raichu if they do. RayOgre using a Scarfed Kyogre is also very problematic because it outspeeds Raichu and my Primals don't outspeed after an Icy Wind drop.

groudon.gif
in Trick Room
Due to Primal Groudon often being supported by Skill Swap and Gravity my team struggles with Primal Groudon under Trick Room. While it usually doesn't kill my entire team it weakens it enough for me to lose.
Y68G-WWWW-WW3U-F9W6 against who I believe is Jibaku I actually miss Icy Wind here sometime which actually hurts him. Main reason I have it saved is because the BS people told me too.

i dont think 20 attack on mence is needed anymore since max/max amoonguss isnt as popular as say last year. just a thought though
Yeah I think it could be moved to SpA or maybe invest more into attack. That was another one of the ev spreads I just had in my box.
