Earthworm vs KO_King: Tar v Tar, Tran v Tran (Warstory)

Hey Smogon-ers, this is my (Earthworm's) first warstory... I had 3 other potential warstories planned but if you don't like this one I probably won't post them :toast: Please comment though, I read other warstories and read their comments before posting mine and then tried to make mine a similar style... Enjoy :nerd:

I had just reached the top 10 on the Shoddy Leaderboard for the first time since I had left it and #1 for more team testing. I decide I might as well try to reach the top of the bunch of 1640s, including big names such as husk's and Aeroblacktyl's alternate names. I hit the Find Match button with my latest team that seems to work alright and come up against KO_King, someone who has posted about as much as me here on Smogon (I think).

Looking forward to a good battle, I put on my prediction cap. Our teams are as follows, in order of appearance. My team's moves/members are in red, KO_King's are in blue, chat is black and commentary is green.

Everyone expects Thunderbolt off a lead Gengar vs a lead Gyarados, so I plan to hit their Electric absorbent Pokemon with Hypnosis… Which I do. I send in Celebi to attempt a U-Turn or Leech Seed, depending on what comes out.

Tyranitar… Well, it will almost certainly be running a Dark or Fire move, and I don’t know the set yet so I may as well U-Turn out to a dark/fire resist…

OK… That doesn’t tell me much, since a lot of BOAH variants run Crunch over Dark Pulse anyway. I’ll just assume that it is CBTar for now and Sub, although I’m taking a gamble on the fact that he isn’t a DDTar or a TTar with both Crunch and Earthquake. That and the fact that he is probably worrying about me using my own Earthquake make it fairly obvious what he will do next, but I don’t want to overpredict…

As you can see from the post-battle chat, KO_King's Heatran bested mine by a difference of 1 speed... and maybe my Tyranitar bested his by something similar.

Great game KO_King, I won't make the same mistakes next time :pimp:.

Props:
*Celebi for taking out Gyarados and forcing a number of crucial switches/breaking substitutes+scouting with U-Turn.
*Gengar for giving me a better chance against Gliscor and taking out Azelf.
*Tyranitar for Focus Punching first.
*Garchomp for being dangerous and threatening (although I could've predicted a bit better) and taking out Breloom.

Slops:
*Me sacrificing Celebi to keep the 'useless-while-Gliscor-is-around' Lucario.
*Me unnecessarily sacrificing Scarfgar even after Tyranitar had used Substitute.
*Heatran for being 1 speed too slow.
*Lucario for doing nothing! D: (Although I have swept entire teams with SDPriority Lucario before >.>)

Thanks for reading, hope it was enjoyable and not too long

Nice read, but the nicknames are really annoying.

You can see what the Pokemon is every time it comes in if that is what you mean, but if you mean the actual nicknames annoy you then I can't help you :P

Although I see what you mean... How should I have changed the log to make it better? Replace all of the instances of the nicknames with the actual name of the Pokemon? The only reason I did it to begin with was to help identify the different percentages of HP when it was Tyranitar vs Tyranitar, then I changed the whole thing to all nicknames :pirate:

Hey Earthworm :D

Great read, I like you're taste in pokemon. I loved to see how insane scarfgar is despite what everyone else says about it.

Our teams happen to have 5 of the exact pokemon, lol.

Very nice, one of the best warstories that have come up recently, always good to read a battle with a good amount of prediction. I personally didn't find the nicknames annoying, though it would be easier if they were edited out, and having the hp percentages at the end of each turn is always great.

Looking at the teams, I was absolutely expecting you to win it. Without any knowledge of your movesets, I was thinking Azelf would be your biggest threat, so after it went down first, I was like "Oh, OK, he has this in the bag." But then your Celebi went down and things started getting interesting (especially after I saw you had Close Combat Lucario to be walled by his Gliscor). I think you were a bit too careful with your Heatran, except for the part where you didn't notice LO. I hate when I do that lol.

Still, this was a good battle, written to where I could always tell what's going on.

Resttalk Heatran + Celebi is a great defensive duo that can still pack a punch (I'm presuming you have Lava Plume Heatran?).

I find Lava Plume to be too weak and Fire Blast burns enough anyway, but now that I think about it, I might make a change to the team, since most of the threats Heatran faces would loathe being burnt which might also contribute to the durability of the combo against things like Garchomp.

edit: I removed the comment about Heracross, don't know what I was thinking o.O

OU warstories are normally dull, but this was fairly addictive once I got my head around the nicknames. In all modesty though, I think our battle this morning was better. :pimp: I'm Nunquam Perdo on Shoddy.

Celebi and Heatran is, imo, the greatest two-Pokemon combination around at the moment. Both so sturdy and powerful with perfect resistances...it takes damn-near ninja prediction for me to take them down with my current team.

That was an awesome game, Earthworm. Especially the mirror battles of Heatran x Heatran (1 speed point :P) and T-Tar x T-Tar, as the title suggests.

And yeah, mine is a Modest Scarf Azelf. ;_;

It wouldn't have mattered anyway, as I U-Turned that turn expecting a Tyranitar switch in.

Again, gg. Looking forward to a rematch!

Cool story and everything, but,

didn't your Garchomp have Draco Meteor? You could have pulled a switch to Lucario, did what you could, died, bring in Chomp for the Draco Meteor.

Draco Meteor wouldn't be able to OHKO Gliscor coming from a physically oriented Garchomp, and I could keep Roosting until he had a -6 SP.ATK, then go for the KO. I guess he did the correct play.

I might replace it wish Surf to gain better coverage on Hippowdon and Gliscor as they seem to give me problems at the moment.

Draco Meteor would only hit a max/max def/HP Gliscor for 52.54% - 61.86%, which means the second one has no chance (besides Critical Hit of course) of KOing factoring in Leftovers.

Surf hits Gliscor for 48.02% - 56.50% and Hippowdon for 41.90% - 49.29%, giving me a good chance as long as they have taken a small amount of prior damage, perhaps by an Earthquake or a Fire Blast earlier.

Another thing to factor is that they can't Roost / Slack Off stall you, like they could with Draco Meteor (because of the Sp. Attack drop) as they will probably just get CH'ed sometime. Surf seems like a good option to me.

Surf is indeed a better option over sp. attack loss. Nice battle and warstory. Out predicting on a team that is built much like yours is never easy, but both of you did a pretty good job. Going for the second grass knot on Heatren was probably the only thing I'd have differently. Breloom was losing half it's regain in sand-storm and couldn't do anything against the sub breaker whom resists all his attacks with sleep clause already shutting down Spore. Other then that, couldn't hav edone better myself. Hope to see more from you.

The only problem Surf has is against Bulkydos/other Bulky Waters, but since I have Celebi/Outrage I guess I don't need to worry too much.

I suppose the alternative move would have been U-Turn, and next time there is a threat like Heatran around I will be sure to do so :pimp:

Nice read. I recommend you to put in their actual name over nicknames.

Also, why didn't you switch out of Garchomp when you were confused. You could've had a chance to beat him.

I agree with replacing nicknames, it would be easier to read.

Great read. I want to use Celebi and Heatran now
