Electivire [GP 2/2]

Why Motor Drive > Vital Spirit? You've just listed what the two abilities do and then said one is better. Why exactly is it better? You haven't given any reasons. You've only said it's "better".

Electivire gets the ability Vital Spirit from the Dream World. This grants him an immunity to the foe's sleep-inducing moves. However, Motor Drive is better since it grants him an Electric-type immunity and a Speed boost when hit with an Electric-type attack.

Is that not a good enough explanation...?

That's what Motor Drive does and not a reason. Example of what I think is adequate:

Scyther receives the ability Steadfast from the Dream World. Despite being a decent ability, Technician is what makes Scyther shine—without it, Scyther would not be very threatening, as its Technician boosted moves are more powerful than the rest of its movepool. It is best to skip out on a Steadfast Scyther (unless you really want the Dream Points).

Not to belittle you, but to be honest, I don't.

We - I, at least - are looking for reasons why Motor Drive is superior to Vital Spirit. Why is the electric immunity + speed boost more powerful than sleep immunity? Possible reasons could include:

1. Sleep moves aren't very common.
2. Your team has a status absorber already (RestTalk, Natural Cure, etc).
3. Electivire needs the speed to sweep.
4. Electivire is too frail to switch into Pokemon like Roserade that could equally attack instead of sleep.
5. Even if Electivire switches into a sleep move, the sleep inducer is faster and KOes Electivire before it can do anything.

I haven't put much thought into whether these reasons hold water, but they are real arguments for why Motor Drive > Vital Spirit. Like, I know that Motor Drive grants an extra immunity and speed boost if you get Electivire in on an electric attack. I also know it provides an immunity to Thunder Wave. Both these things are obvious and stated on the Motor Drive page here on Smogon. What's not so obvious is why immunity to electric + speed boost > immunity to sleep, and that's what I feel the analysis should explain.

Electivire has always been shunned in OU because of his below average attacking stats compared to other Pokemon in the OU tier.
This...isn't really true at all. 123 Atk / 95 SpA is great, even in OU. It's the low Base Power of his moves that makes him inferior.

I feel that you're missing some of the potential of vital spirit. while I realize that it's not the most fantastic of abilities, it's not as bad as you make it out to be (yeah it's still not all that great).

for one, even though rose can outspeed at times, you make it out as if the most common roserade in the tier is max speed, which is false, from my experiences. if it's not max timid, it's likely not running anything that outspeeds vire.

people use tangrowth?

venomoth is arguably a greater threat and is also nicely damaged by wild charge.

Because it is as that bad... There's not much else to say about it that hasn't already been said.

I said Roserade can, not does outspeed it.
Also, most bulky Roserades that I have seen don't run Sleep Powder anyways, they run something like Spikes / TSpikes / Giga Drain / Sludge Bomb / Rest. Roserades I have seen that carry Sleep Powder are always the max Speed lead ones...

Sleep moves are really uncommon in the UU tier anyways, and an Electric-type immunity outclasses it entirely.

And Tangrowth was just an example on how bad Vital Spirit is, he isn't beating him with Vital Spirit anyways...
