#589 Escavalier
Bug/Steel
Stats:

HP: 70
Attack: 135
Defense: 105
Special Attack: 60
Special Defense: 105
Speed: 20

Escavalier, the Cavalry Pokemon. They fly around at high speed striking with their pointed spears. Even when in trouble they will face their opponent bravely.

Escavalier is a new member in the Underused tier, and should NOT be overlooked. With an insane base 135 attack coupled with 70/105/105 Defenses and an excellent typing, Escavalier is more than a match for the majority of the tier. Without further ado, here are some sets.

Chivalry is Dead

Escavalier @ Choice Band
Ability: Swarm
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252HP, 252Atk, 4 Def
Moves:

-Megahorn
-Iron Head
-Return
-Pursuit/Faint Attack/Aerial Ace

While Escavalier's movepool is a tad bit lacking, he just manages to scrape together a good Choice Band set. A Swarm boosted Megahorn off of this guy can absolutely decimate an unprepared team, dealing massive damage to even those that resist. A few damage calcs are as follows:

CB Megahorn vs. 252HP/252Def Suicune: 53.71%-63.67%
Swarm CB Megahorn vs. The same Suicune: 80.45%-95.05% 47% Chance to OHKO with Stealth Rock.
CB Iron Head vs. 252HP/0Def Regirock: 60.16%-71.70% 2HKO
CB Megahorn vs. 252HP/252Def Bold Milotic: 70.30%-82.99%
Swarm CB Megahorn vs. Same Milotic: 105.33%-124.37% OHKO Guaranteed
CB Megahorn vs. 252HP/252Def Deoxys-D: 112.50%-133.22% OHKO Guaranteed
CB Megahorn vs. 252HP/252Def Bold Quagsire: 67.26%-79.44%
Swarm CB Megahorn vs. Same Quagsire: 101.27%-119.04% OHKO Guaranteed

As you can see, some premier physical walls in UU get absolutely decimated by Escavalier's STAB moves. Some other notable walls that fall to Escavalier include Clefable, Defensive Drapion, Slowbro, and Nidoqueen.

MY FISTS, THEY ARE MADE OF STEEL!

Escavalier @ Leftovers
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Shell Armor/Swarm
EVs: 252HP,252Atk, 4 SpDef
Moves:

-Swords Dance
-Substitute
-Megahorn
-Iron Head

While this set lacks the immediate power of the Choice Band set, it can prove just as deadly if not more so. After one Swords Dance, Adamant Escavalier hits a whopping 810 attack stat. After that, it can (about 50% of the time) even proceed to 2HKO max HP max Def Registeel, a Pokemon that is considered a safe switch. Megahorn will be your main form of offense, with Iron Head for secondary STAB. Have fun wrecking teams with this. The choice of ability is up to the user on this set, however Swarm is recommended with Substitute to pummel some of the alleged counters to the set.

Defensive Cavalry

Escavalier @ Leftovers
Nature: Impish/Careful
Ability: Shell Armor
EVs: 252HP, 40Def, 216SpDef
Moves:

-X-Scissor/Megahorn
-Iron Head
-Knock Off
-Rest/Protect/Toxic

And finally, taking advantage of Escavalier's fabulous typing and defenses, there is a defensive set. Escavalier gets the rare Shell Armor ability, granting him immunity to those obnoxious critical hits. The choice between X-Scissor and Megahorn is the age-old debate of Power vs. Accuracy, Iron Head once again for secondary STAB, and the wonderful Knock off to put switch-ins in their place. Chansey without that Eviolite? Or maybe get rid of that Leftovers recovery that so many Pokemon need. Overall it's a wonderful support move. The last spot is mainly filler, but they are all good options. Rest to get rid of burns or increase survivability, Protect for scouting, or Toxic to wear down opponents.

And there you have it. Escavalier! Let me know if I missed anything.

Discuss!

What is Aerial Ace hitting harder than STAB moves? A SE Aerial Ace does the same damage as a neutral Iron Head.

Escavalier is one of the best Pokemon in UU at the momment. However many people overshadow it for Cobalion and such, but this thing still has it's place in the metagame. It's rather decent SPDef and defense allow it to be a potent SD sweeper. Being able to resist Dragon + Ice and take those hit even stronger than Cobalion is also a good quality. It's choice band set also boasts a huge amount of power which it can use to break through hail teams with ease. This has alot of pontential.

Rather decent SPDef and Defense?
It's freaking amazing, mine took a fire blast from a dragonite and didn't even lose half its health.
Course he died next turn but still...

Anyways, his biggest problem is that he's predictable either it's a staller, or it's an attacker. And with his movepool, it's easy to guess what moves he has.

@FB
uhh

wut
this is uu

anyway, I suggest saving discussion of this for a while. When drought and victini are banned, it'll be far better than it is now. however, I do have to give it credit - it rapes any non-sun team with relative ease.

Also, as a note, even Zapdos takes a boatload from CB Swarm Megahorn. Too lazy to run a calc, but my guess is a 2HKO.

if this guy gets a priority move from a move tutor at some point, we have a scizor for uu

For UU? Hell, dude, OU might even use him because of his superior bulk. Priority coming off of 135 Base attack coupled with 70/105/105 Defenses to be able to maybe take a special hit is, IMO, superior to Scizor.

I've been running a SpD set with SD/ Iron Head/ Megahorn/ Pursuit and it's been working great. Great utility counter for a bunch of special threats and has the ability to even trap some of them with Pursuit(i.e Ghosts and Psychics). SD is mostly filler but it makes it so hard to check that it's probably the best option.

Other than obvious broken shit, it's the best Mon in UU imo.

This dude is so good I've been running him in OU (on a Trick Room team). Personally, I don't see much use for Iron Head on the banded set, as I'd much rather be locked into Megahorn than anything else. I do suppose I should give it a shot, especially considering half the moves on the Choice Band set are filler anyway.

Escavalier is probably one of my most favorite pokemon in this gen. The first time I used it was in OU, which died down a bit because Blaziken and Ferroseed pushed it around. I personally prefer using Counter over Iron Head in his defensive sets, however, as it teaches many physical attackers (especially Outrage sweepers) a lesson.

I find Escavalier to be good in the metagame since a lot of Kyurem don't run HP Fire. Even outside of Kyurem it's quite bulky and hits hard. Too bad its movepool leaves something to be desired but STAB Megahorns are nothing to laugh off. A Specially Defensive Choice Band set actually works really well.

SpecD CB sets are OK, but without max attack you miss out on a lot of key KOs from those calcs I mentioned.

Unless a Trick Room is in place Escavalier has a huge problem against Emboar in particular. Being able to, in theory, take and resist all of Escavalier's hits and then dish out a OHKO via STAB x4 Fire move be it either physical or special.

Of course to deal with Emboar, and most fire types, you would need to have Milotic/Blastoise or some sort of bulky water to keep those nasty fire pokemon in check.

Now in terms of tier placement I believe the only reason he isn't in OU is because he doesn't have Gyro Ball. If he did however, he would be a complete monster and no doubt shift up a tier.

Emboar actually is another reason to run Aerial Ace. It wont enjoy taking one of those at all.

Can you run a damage calc for your Escavalier set with Aerial Ace against a 252HP/252 ATK Adamant Emboar? I am curious to see if Emboar would survive 2 or even 3 hits. My theory is that he would life at least 1 considering the low Aerial Ace base power.

CB Aerial Ace vs. 252HP/252ATK Adamant Emboar: 61.79%-73.11%.

As a note, if you have 3 Spikes and SR on the field, it's a 92.3% chance of an OHKO.

Knock Off might find a place on the CB set, considering how starved is for moves and the fact that Gligar and Dusclops actually wall it pretty bad. In general it can help wear down any of the few things that are able to switch in repeatedly.

Here's to hoping this question doesn't make an utter fool of me:

Has a mixed Escavalier with Focus Blast been considered at all? How much investment would 60 base Special Attack need to deter Steel-types that switch in expecting Megahorn/Iron Head/etc?

Probably too much to be worth it, if it even would make a difference. A lot of steel types get shit on by CB Megahorn anyway if they don't 4x resist (IIRC Scizor and Magnezone are cleanly 2HKO'd. Forretress wouldn't take much more from Focus Blast than Megahorn anyway).

According to the Smogon damage calculator:

Max/Max Focus Blast vs 108/0 Neutral Magneton: 88.1% - 103.7%

Max/Max Focus Blast vs 252/4 +SpDef Registeel: 26.4% - 31.3%

Max/Max Focus Blast vs 252/252 +SpDef Empoleon: 33.9% - 40.3%

Yeah, not worth it. Haven't even seen a Magneton yet.

As mentioned before, you need proper team support to either draw out and kill fire types early on, or to take a fire type move (I use Arcanine with Flash Fire boost- Flare Blitz is hard to stop once it's boosted) if you're going to run Esca at all. His offensive power is great, but even the specially defensive ones can be OHKO'd by HP Fire or some other fire type attack (even special ones). Anyways, I love Esca and I run a sp def set to counter Kyurem, though I got rid of sub in favor of Knock Off (with so many Chanseys, Dusclops, and other eviolite pains). He's an excellent poke, with great sweeping potential if he can live w/e they throw at him. Unfortunately, I've found that, even though he's specially defensive, he can be 2HKOd or 3HKOd by special sweepers who you might think to switch in on, like Jolteon or even StallDos. That, coupled with his slow speed and lack of resistances to common special attack sweeping moves (water, electric, etc) make it hard to effectively switch him in on many threats who are wrecking your team. For the reasons mentioned above, I think he should be relegated to a Knock Off/late game sweeping set (after his counters and pains in the butt are taken out), but he's still awesome. My fear is that enough people will complain about him to where he's relegated to OU, where he doesn't belong >.> or just put in BL :(

If you're going to use Esca, I highly recommend also running something with flash fire and a strong fire type move. It wrecks.
