Featuring the more and more popular Calm Mind Jirachi

Team Focus:
This team's main focus is enabling Jirachi to sweep. To do so, all of its counters need to be eliminated. That's where the other team members are for. Calm Mind Jirachi has become immensely popular in a few weeks, and this is my attempt to make it work. There's been a lot of thinking in this team, but I'm sure there's room for improvement. Rate away.

Monday 05/05/08: Team completely overhauled. Changes made:
- Weavile replaced by Bronzong
- Magnezone replaced by Gengar
- Machamp given a much bulkier spread
- Some move changes

Monday 05/12/08: Some more changes made:
- Gengar given Hidden Power [Ice] over Focus Blast
- Changed Vaporeon's spread to 252 HP, 252 DF, 6 SD
- Replaced Ice Beam for Hidden Power [Electric] on Vaporeon

On to the Team:

dpmfa437.png

Bronzong @ Leftovers
Relaxed : Levitate
252 HP, 108 AT, 20 DF, 130 SD
- Stealth Rock
- Gyro Ball
- Earthquake
- Grass Knot

Bronzong leads this team. With his good resistances, he will be able to lay out first turn Stealth Rock more often than not. Gyro Ball deals with Weavile, Tyranitar and Mamoswine, and also hits the likes of Gengar and Azelf hard. Electivire and Metagross get nailed by Earthquake, just like Fire type switch ins. I chose Grass Knot as a last move, as it surprises top notch Jirachi counters Swampert and Rhyperior.

dpmfa094.png

Gengar @ Choice Scarf
Modest : Levitate
6 HP, 252 SA, 252 SP
- Hypnosis
- Shadow Ball
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]

This team's much needed revenge killer, also sporting probably the fastest Hypnosis in the game. Shadow Ball is its main weapon, and can score surprise KOs on Alakazam, Azelf and Starmie. Thunderbolt saves me from rampaging Gyarados, and Hidden Power [Ice] OHKO's all Dragons.

dpmfa385.png

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Bold : Serene Grace
252 HP, 80 DF, 176 SP
- Psychic
- Thunderbolt
- Calm Mind
- Substitute

The Star of the show, literally. If the opponent's counters are downed, this sweet looking fairy won't have much problems finishing off the rest. Common walls like Blissey, Cresselia, Suicune (without Calm Mind), Celebi and Vaporeon, to name a few, are all used as set-up fodder. The EV spread gives Jirachi 404 HP, to create 101 HP Substitutes. I've invested a lot of Speed as well, so I can outspeed Lucario and Heracross and OHKO with Psychic after one Calm Mind.

dpmfa068.png

Machamp @ Leftovers
Impish : No Guard
252 HP, 12 AT, 236 DF, 8 SP
- DynamicPunch
- Ice Punch
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

This four armed beast serves so many purposes. First of all, he gives me a very solid Blissey switch in, a thing a lot of teams lack. He also absorbs sleep, and causes chaos with DynamicPunch's 100% confusion rate. He also counters Weavile and Tyranitar very well, and just Rests off the damage. No wonder I've been using him in almost every team I've made.

dpmfa134.png

Vaporeon @ Leftovers
Bold : Water Absorb
252 HP, 252 DF, 6 SD
- Surf
- Hidden Power [Electric]
- Wish
- Protect

Vaporeon gives my team much needed Fire resist and Wish support. It makes a great switch in to Rhyperior and Garchomp, who can mess up Jirachi severely. This is also the closest to a Mixape counter I get. Hidden Power [Electric] 2HKOs Gyarados, while he can't do much back. Protect helps to instantly heal with Wish, scout out choice moves and get extra Leftovers recovery.

dpmfa472.png

Gliscor @ Leftovers
Impish : Sand Veil
252 HP, 6 AT, 252 DF
- Earthquake
- Ice Fang
- Roost
- Knock Off

Gliscor provides a Ground and Fight resist, and generally walls physical threats, including Heracross, Tyranitar and Metagross. Ice Fang helps against Dragons and flyers. Because Bronzong already has Stealth Rock, Gliscor has room for the great move Knock Off, removing Leftovers, Choice Items and what not.

Threat List:

Tyranitar: Machamp can switch in easily and threaten to kill with DynamicPunch. Bronzong can take a few hits and hit Tyranitar hard with Gyro Ball. Gliscor also does a great job when Tyranitar doesn't have Ice Beam.
Gyarados: Vaporeon doesn't take much damage from any of its moves, and 2HKOs with Hidden Power [Electric]. If Gyarados lacks Earthquake, Jirachi can come in and kill it with Thunderbolt. Gengar can always revenge kill it if it has less than 3 Dragon Dances.
Infernape: The ever so common MixApe set gets countered by Vaporeon. Gliscor does well against other sets.
Azelf: Bronzong OHKOs with Stealth Rock up, and can come in on everything but Flamethrower. Vaporeon can take some hits and 2HKO with Surf. Gengar can score a surprise KO with Shadow Ball.
Electivire: Bronzong takes his hits well, and 2HKOs with Earthquacke.
Heracross: Gliscor mandhandles it.
Salamence: Physical versions get handled by Bronzong and Gliscor. The popular SpecsMence is dangerous. Jirachi and Bronzong can switch into Draco Meteors, and Vaporeon can switch in the rest.
Togekiss: Jirachi can beat it, but I need to look out for Paralyze. Bronzong 2HKOs with Gyro Ball when Paralyzed, and takes hits decently.
Gengar: Bronzong OHKOs with Stealth Rock up, and doesn't take too much damage from its attacks.
Garchomp: Gliscor can take some hits and scare it away with Ice Fang. Machamp can take a Swords Dance boosted hit and OHKO with Ice Punch. Bronzong and Jirachi can both 2HKO it when it's locked into Outrage. Gengar can revenge kill.
Lucario: Gliscor walls all versions lacking Hidden Power [Ice]. Jirachi can outspeed and doesn't fear priority. Bronzong can take non boosted hits and 2HKO with Earthquake.
Starmie: Jirachi can set up on it, and Gengar can most likely score a surprise KO.
Weavile: Bronzong OHKOs with Gyro Ball and doesn't fear any attack. Machamp switches in easily and devastates it with DynamicPunch.
Dugtrio: Jirachi is the only one that could be trapped and killed, and it will suck.
Porygon-Z: Bronzong and Jirachi resist its common attacks, and can 2HKO with Gyro Ball or Psychic.
Machamp: Gliscor walls sets without Ice Punch, Jirachi can take a hit, outspeed and threaten to kill with Psychic.
Snorlax: Machamp can switch in and threaten to hurt it severaly with DynamicPunch. Jirachi can set up on sets lacking Earthquake.
Zapdos: Jirachi can set up on it, but needs to watch out for Paralysis. Gliscor walls all sets without Hidden Power [Ice].
Suicune: Jirachi uses this as set up fodder, Vaporeon blocks all sets without Hidden Power [Electric] or Toxic.
Breloom: Machamp takes the Spore, Gliscor walls it.
Ninjask: As long as I prevent it from passing anything but Speed boosts, I should be fine.
Metagross: Bronzong resists all of its attacks, and 2HKOs with Earthquacke. Gliscor can come in on non Choice Banded hits, and kill it with Earthquake as well.
Heatran: Vaporeon walls it. Machamp can take a hit when needed. Bronzong can hit it on the switch with Earthquake.
Celebi: Jirachi can use it as set up fodder. Gengar can switch in on all sets without ThunderWave or Psychic.
Jirachi: Bronzong can take hits all day long, and 2-3HKO with Earthquake.
Dragonite: Gliscor can take it down with Ice attacks. Machamp can take a hit and OHKO with Ice Punch. Gengar can revenge kill.
Mamoswine: Bronzong makes a great counter, resisting all its attacks and 2HKOing with Gyro Ball.
Gallade: Gliscor fears nothing but Ice Punch. Vaporeon can take some hits and 2HKO with Surf.
Yanmega: Bronzong and Jirachi take his hits quite well, and 2HKO with Gyro Ball / Psychic.
Kingdra: Vaporeon resists everything but Draco Meteor, which can be Wished off.
Roserade: Jirachi can come in easily and use Roserade as set up fodder. Bronzong resists all of its moves, and 2-3HKOs with Gyro Ball. Gengar switches in easily and 2HKOs as well.
Scizor: Machamp resists all of its common moves, and can hurt it with DynamicPunch.

Those are wonderful pictures of your team.

Mixnape sporting HP ice weak. Take out Zone for Dugtrio if you wanna do that kind of thing.

Is there any reason why I can't see the team, just the pictures? Also, it looks like you may have some problems with Fire attacks once Vaporeon goes down.

Edit: good, there's a team now. Also, what is SP? It could be Speed, Special Attack, or Special Defense.

I would say watch out for CB Weavile. CB Ice Punch destroys Machamp and Gliscor, OHKOing the latter and 2HKOing Machamp-which is why I think Hariyama is better for this team. Night Slash 2HKOs Jirachi and Vaporeon, tho Vappie might be a 3HKO, you don't have anything to OHKO it and a critical hit will be your downfall. Magnezone and your own Weavile are destroyed by Brick Break. Maybe Forretress over Magnezone or Hariyama over Machamp.

I don't like the fact that Mamoswine (Even with just a Life Orb) 1-2HKO's everything on this team and is also something that Jirachi hates. It seems like Machamp is out of place, as you really don't need something to be a "solid switch-in on Blissey" since Jirachi beats Blissey one on one, and there are better Pokémon who can beat Tyranitar/Weavile AND give you a Mamoswine counter. Weavile doesn't seem like the greatest choice to switch-in on Cresselia and Slowbro, as 1. Both are just set-up fodder for Jirachi and 2. getting T-Waved will really bite. Bronzong can counter Weavile, Mamoswine, and Tyranitar very well, which is something your team could use. Forretress fits the bill nicely as well, though it won't like repeated CB EQs from 'swine with no recovery.

But overall I like the focus of the team. CMJirachi kicks ass.

great team, subcm rachi often spelled gg back when i used it. i like that you've made sure you can take out tar/celebi/bliss, the most prevalent pokes preventing it's sweep. If you don't mind sacrificing a bit of bulky, you could always run 252 HP/120 Def/92 Spd/44 SAtk timid on jirachi to beat timid mamo (as well as adamant luke/hera). the 44 evs are filler so you can throw them into wherever.

I'm seeing a potential eq/if/waterfal gyarados problem, so I'd definetely stick hp elec on vappy to beat him, and I'd pair that with protect to help it take out mixapre reliably.

that being said i dont really see what magnezone is doing, he's just another fire/fight weak. if you're that worried about skarm/spikes, give machamp speed to beat skarm with min+1 speed, and you'll often 2hko them with sr down. you could throw in zapdos with roost uturn hp grass tb, or even another resttalker to beat annoying stuff like togekiss. I also like the idea of bronzong for the mamoswine worries.

your team is kinda slow overall, be wary of that, mixed electivire can be a big problem !

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I got Lucario covered fairly well with Gliscor, and Infernape with Vaporeon. There's no threat list yet, but expect that soon.

Bronzong over Machamp or Magnezone seems like a decent idea, Although Vaporeon can handle Mamoswine fairly well, and Bronzong will be another fire weak. Weavile can still be handled by Vap and Jirachi when he breaks through Machamp, but EVing Machamp differently will maybe do the trick already.

Skarmory, Bronzong and Forretress though, seem like a huge problem to this team, and when I replace Magnezone I will really need something to counter those.

Keep 'em coming guys!

Vaporeon is 2HKO'd by a Life Orb EQ... so Vaporeon cannot handle Mamoswine "fairly well". For Skarmory, simply running Thunderbolt on Jirachi eliminates it as a threat in my opinion. Bronzong is manhandled by Machamp. But why not take out Weavile and Magnezone? Bronzong provides a much more reliable lead, and you could replace Magnezone for Heatran. On Heatran, I highly suggest Hidden Power Grass, as you will definitely be drawing out the likes of Swampert. This acts more or less as a "lure", and once you draw it out you quickly annihilate it with a nasty Grass surprise. Though now I strongly suggest Hidden Power Electric on Vaporeon because without it a Gyarados sweep is just waiting to happen. This leaves you with very few weaknesses while still maintaining a central focus on sweeping with Jirachi.

Thanks Pulse, this really helps.

So, the team you're suggesting is Bronzong, Heatran, Jirachi, Gliscor, Vaporeon, Machamp.

A few issues:

Bronzong and Gliscor both are great candidates for Stealth Rock. Either I give Gliscor Knock Off, or I give Bronzong a screen. Preferable the first option as I want Stealth Rock on the field asap.

Set for Bronzong (?):
Relaxed : Levitate
252 HP, 252 DF, 6 SD (help me a bit here)
- Stealth Rock
- Hypnosis
- Gyro Ball
- Earthquake

The first three moves are mandatory. The last one I don't know. I'm thinking Earthquake as I need to counter Metagross, and I have Wish support, so I don't really plan on exploding. I opted for max Defense, as I'm trying to counter Tyranitar, Mamoswine and Weavile.

Set for Heatran:
@ Choice Scarf? (I really need Speed / a revenge killer in my team)
Modest / Mild
6 HP, 252 SA, 252 SP
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Explosion

Choice Scarf Heatran seemed good, but maybe a Specs set or even a Taunt one is better. As stated I need some Speed. Help me out again.

Thanks guys, I keep being astounded by the great tips you're giving me.

This > Marriland Battle Strat lol =P

BUMP

A lot of changes made (look at the first paragraph). Took all your comments in mind.

I'd like you guys to rate my team as it is now!

Your team is kind of Magenzone weak it it's an HP Ice variant. As Magnezone can trap Bronzong as it Stealth Rocks and set up with Substitute and Magnet Rise. If you switch in Gliscor it gets OHKOed by HP Ice. Vaporeon is beat by Thunderbolt. Machamp is nearly 2HKOed from my calculations. If you switch in ScarfGar it is 2HKOed it. Jirachi is 3HKOed by Thunderbolt but if you get in a Calm Mind you could survive a few more hits. Possibly Dugtrio can help.

Jirachi will always take less than 32% from a TBolt from Magnezone after a Calm Mind. So that means it'll probably be left with 74% after turn one. Then after the second Calm Mind, it takes under 24%, leaving it with above 50% after that turn. Then it can set up a Substitute, live the Thunderbolt, and beat Magnezone one on one. Keep in mind this is all with the max damage possible on two consecutive turns, something with about a 1% chance of happening in itself.

However, it would not be too wise to bring out your star this early, so an easier way of dealing with Magnezone would be nice. It seems like the weak spot for the team is Gengar right now, so if you do end up having a lot of Magnezone problems I would replace him.

I'm leaning towards Focus Blast on Gengar, because I already have so many ways of dealing with Garchomp. Hidden Power [Ice] revenge killing can only be done when Garchomp's locked into Outrage, and when that's the case Bronzong and Jirachi could finish him off as well. Focus Blast would help against Magnezone (not if he has a sub though) and Heatran. If I experience really big Magnezone problems I need to find something that has a Thunderbolt weakness AND can revenge kill properly.

Just noticed something small, but Machamp's 238 def ev's aren't divisible by four, so round that down to 236 and give him 8 evs in speed instead. This will help you outrun any bilssey running 4 speed evs

If a CM Jirachi sweep is what you're going for then it would be a huge mistake to overlook Dugtrio. CM Jira's 2 biggest threats are Heatran (especially stalkers) and Tyranitar. Dugtrio makes quick work of both, in addition to taking care of pesky Infernapes, Brelooms, Heras, and even Starmie if you play your cards right. Gengar seems like the obvious candidate for replacement, since he serves very little purpose outside of revenge killing on this team, and Dugtrio generally does that a lot better (albeit with fewer resists).

If you opt for Dugtrio over Gengar, you should also consider U-Turn Zapdos over Gliscor. TTar and Heatran just love to switch into Zappy's special attacks, and if you hit either with a u-turn on the switch they will quickly be out of Jirachi's way. Zapdos is inferior to Gliscor in dealing with Hera, but with dugtrio that shouldn't be a problem anyway. Zapdos can also use Discharge to threaten paralysis, a huge boon to a generally slow team. I could imagine SD Luke problems opening up if your opponent drops stealth rocks, however pretty much your entire team can deal significant damage to Luke in a single shot to ultimately prevent a sweep, and speedy Jirachi is actually pretty good at beating Lucario.

Those 80 Def EV's on Jirachi would probably be better suited in SpAtk, or even SpDef. With the EV's in Defense, Jirachi's physical damage will be reduced by (generally) a bit less than 2%, which could be significant; however those 80 EV's also translate into 70 extra special attack points after 5 CM's, which could be instrumental in beating Blissey depending on it's EV spread and the situation.

Good Luck; Hope this Helps! --TAY

Very great tips TAY, that really helps! I will consider Dugtrio, but if I decide to use him, I may just give Gliscor U-Turn instead of Knock Off, instead of replacing him with a whole new pokemon (with a Stealth Rock weak).

That would limit me to HP Electric on Vaporeon though, as the lack of a Gyarados revenge killer (Gengar) and about the best setup fodder for the water snake (Dugtrio) pretty much spells great problems without a good counter.

If you switch into Roserade using HP Fire, expecting a Leaf Storm or Shadow Ball, won't your Jirachi get owned? :/

Bronzong and Gengar counter Roserade decently as well. I'm not too worried about special movesets of individual pokes etc.

k imo it would be better to run max def/hp on vaporeon to counter mixape better, i guess you can counter it already decent with gengar/vaporeon combo but you can't really rely on it. So I would suggest 252 Hp/252 Def/6 Sp Def Vaporeon with Hp Electric/Surf/Wish/Protect, imo there's no need for also an ice attack on Vaporeon, since Gliscor only gets beaten by the SdChomp+Outrage/CbChomp, and you can simply switch zong in on the outrage, and he can finish chomp off. If he did set up, you've always a good revenge killer with gengar using shadow ball (or if you go with hp ice obviously with hp ice). Further, I really like the concept of CmJirachi, and you worked it out really well. I don' really have other suggestions atm, maybe later. Good team man ^^

looks very good with the changes right now - you're at a point where you need to play with the team more to spot potential weak spots.

On the sets, I emphasize the need for HP Electric on Vaporeon over Ice Beam combined with keeping HP Ice on Gengar over Focus Blast - Vaporeon is your only real counter versus a Gyarados with Earthquake, and Magnezone is only really a minor problem as Jirachi can indeed deal with him nicely (as long as you don't switch in on a thunderbolt after he already has a sub up xD).

Grass Knot on your Bronzong is intriguing; I'd love to see some calculations on it to standard Swampert.

Good team otherwise, very bulky and defensive, but that's the new trend nowadays ;).

Thanks for some more rates.

(Final ?) changes made, check bold 2nd paragraph.

Grass Knot 2HKOs Swampert and Rhyperior. 1HKO is not achievable without positive nature and a load of special attack EVs.

More comments?

Looks really good Kappie! I think those changes leave the team at its peak... :D Nice work man. Glad we all could help.
