Ferrothorn (Analysis)

Ferrothorn

[Overview]

Although Ferrothorn is rarely seen in VGC, it is decent in Trick Room. Its ability, Iron Barbs, allows it to break Focus Sashes as well as Sturdy. Its massive defenses allow it to take hits well from the likes of Samurott and Jellicent. As long as you keep Ferrothorn away from Fire-types such as Chandelure and Darmanitan, it can either dish out damage or provide support for your team.

[SET]
name: Trick Room Sweeper
move 1: Gyro Ball / Iron Head
move 2: Power Whip
move 3: Explosion
move 4: Leech Seed / Toxic
item: Occa Berry / Life Orb
nature: Brave
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
IVs: 0 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

With Trick Room support, Ferrothorn can deal massive damage with its strong STAB attacks.

Gyro Ball deals massive damage to fast Pokemon in VGC, such as Tornadus and Terrakion. Iron Head is a more reliable alternative, with a 30% chance of a flinch. Power Whip hits Pokemon that resist Steel-type attacks, such as Jellicent and Scrafty. Explosion allows Ferrothorn to do massive damage when it is low on HP. Be sure to pair it with a Ghost-type or a Pokemon with Protect or Telepathy. The last slot is filler. Leech Seed is Ferrothorn's only form of recovery, and helps against Pokemon like Bisharp. Toxic forces switches, and can wear down opponents that cannot do much damage to Ferrothorn.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Occa Berry allows Ferrothorn to survive weak Fire-type attacks, such as Eelektross's Flamethrower. Life Orb gives Ferrothorn a much-needed power boost at the cost of HP. The given EV spread maximizes Ferrothorn's bulk and Attack. A Brave nature and 0 IVs makes Ferrothorn as slow as possible for Trick Room, while maximizing Ferrothorn's attack.

This set does not function well without trick room setup. It’s also great if your able to predict your opponents and have them setup the trick room for you.

This set needs Trick Room support. Pokemon such as Musharna, Reuniclus, and Chandelure, can set up Trick Room for Ferrothorn. Jellicent is a great partner for Ferrothorn, as it can use its strong Water Spout to OHKO Fire-types, making sweeping easier.

[SET]
name: Bulky Leech Seed
move 1: Gyro Ball
move 2: Substitute
move 3: Leech Seed
move 4: Protect
item: Leftovers
nature: Impish
evs: 252 HP / 212 Def / 44 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Ferrothorn can take advantage of its great bulk to stall out opponents with Leech Seed. Substitute and Protect allow Ferrothorn to stall for more Leech Seed damage. Gyro Ball allows Ferrothorn to do massive damage to Terrakion and Tornadus.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Impish nature is to help take advantage of Ferrothorn’s bulk as well as to use his ability Iron barbs as often as possible due to his ev spread. Relaxed can also be used in case you want to use it under trick room.

[Checks and Counters]

Anything with fire attacks can pretty much counter Ferrothorn. Some counters include Chandelure, Hydreigon, Volcarona and Darmanitan.
