Thanks to its great bulk and defensive typing, Ferrothorn is a very important Pokemon for Steel-type teams. Its typing gives it an important role of checking Water- and Ground-types and threaten them with Power Whip. Leech Seed gives it a form of recovery and is great when combined with Protect to get even more recovery and stall out opponents. Stealth Rock is a great utility move to chip away at the opposing team. Spikes is another option if another Pokemon on the team already has Stealth Rock. Maximum investment in Defense is for consistently dealing with physical threats to Steel-type teams such as Dracovish, Barraskewda, Mamoswine, and Crawdaunt. Ferrothorn is primarily a utility Pokemon and is used to switch in on attacks and apply defensive pressure to the opponent.
Jirachi is a good partner for Ferrothorn as they form a core that can overwhelm Water-type teams thanks to Jirachi's access to Thunderbolt, Energy Ball and Psychic. Aegislash is a good partner because its Ghost typing gives it an immunity to Fighting-type attacks that threaten Ferrothorn and allows it to block Rapid Spin. Aegislash also benefits from Ferrothorn's entry hazards because it can use Shadow Sneak to pick off weakened foes. Bisharp is another good partner that punishes entry hazard removal because of its Defiant ability, which gives it a +2 Attack boost if the foe uses Defog. Corviknight forms a great defensive core with Ferrothorn and provides a Ground immunity. Excadrill is a great revenge killer and is an offensive check to Fire-types that threaten Ferrothorn and Steel-type teams in general. Duraludon can set up Stealth Rock, allowing Ferrothorn to run Spikes. Lucario and Durant are two strong wallbreakers that benefit from Ferrothorn's entry hazards chipping away at the opposing team.
