Finding a new game (for ps2)

so lately ive been on an rpg kick... i think its me trying to pass the time until SSBB.

Was wondering if the smogon community would lend me aid in finding a new RPG.

The type which i like best are the tales of symphonia/Star ocean (the new one) type games. However crono cross/final fantasy esque classic rpgs are good as well.

-Thanks for your help in advance.

I think there's a Thread already open in this forum titled "Good RPGs", but i may be mistaken.

For PS2 RPG's, i hear the new Valkyrie Profile's pretty good. Disgaea, the first mind you, is a great game if you can get past the graphics. Of course, there's the all-encompassing Final Fantasy series, who has the cliche X (not to say it isnt worth it), the abysmal X-2, and my personal favorite, XII.

If you want a love story between sappy cliche characters, no. If you want a game that's more about innovative gameplay (for FF series), and a storyline that's about the broader story, rather than how a group of 6 friends save the world, yes. I'd suggest renting it, as it's split among the fans.

If you liked ToS you will probably like Kingdom Hearts, in the sense that it is real-time. It gets really sappy during some moments, though.

Final Fantasy XII is amazing, and definitely worth a buy. As for others, the Shin Megami Tensei series is mostly great, and the new one, Persona 3 (comes out next week I think), is supposed to be the best one yet. Although you said PS2, you also mentioned Chrono Cross, so if you're willing to pick up some PS1 RPGs, I could name you a boatload of great ones.

Dragon Quest VIII for PS2 is great, and should be pretty easy to find. On the PS1 side, I'm assuming that you've played FFVII, but if you haven't played FFIX, go find that right now. There's also Dragon Quest VII, Lunar: The Silver Star, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, Final Fantasy Anthology (it's V and VI), Final Fantasy Chronicles (FFIV and Chrono Trigger), and Xenogears, which has an insanely complicated / nonsensical plot, but a lot of people love it.

Oh, and if you have a Gamecube or Dreamcast, go get Skies of Arcadia. It's one of the most underrated games ever, probably one of my top 5 or 10 RPGs ever.

If you like Tales of Symphonia, how about tracking down Tales of the Abyss? I heard Tales of Legendia sucked though, so you might not want to touch that one.

I second the call for Skies of Arcadia. Amazing game.

Tales of Legendia isn't that bad. Not as good as Abyss or Symphonia, but it's still not as bad as everyone says it is. Great characters, great music, decent story, kinda shitty battle system.

If you're just looking for something to pass the time, I'd give Radiata Stories a shot. There are some Star Ocean influences as well, I've been told. It's probably better for your 'passing the time' needs because as far as I can tell so far, it's not too in depth. Worth a run through though.

edit: fuck, i could have sworn i saw atlus on the intro screen after squeenix, i apologize.
