XY OU First OU Team. Centered around Zard-X-Greninja! (1300+)

Hello everyone! I'm a new player to pokemon (been playing it for 1 month) and I decided to try competitive! I built this team after reading some guides in the internet. The first thing I did was choose some pokemons I wanted to use, which were Charizard and Greninja (they are really cool). Then, I built around them, getting a spinner (excadrill) to counter zard weakness to rocks and also a hazard setter to help them sweep (smeargle). The first version of this team also had gengar, because I thought that spin blocking would be a good idea, and gothitelle, because I liked the idea of trapping and eliminating a weak pokemon.

After doing some testing with them in game and in pokemon showdown after discovering it, I didn't like having gengar and gothitelle in it, so I traded them for talonflame, to have more power and a good revenge killer, and rotom-w, to counter talonflames that always obliterated me and be able to sponge some damage from other threats.

The team, as it is right now, is:

Greninja @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Extrasensory
- U-turn

Greninja is my special sweeper. It has good coverage and power, gaining STAB at all it's moves with it's protean ability. Life Orb is there because I can increase my power without being locked to one move. I also like having U-turn, not for it's damage, but for switching more easily and I think greninja has good speed to make good use of it.

Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
IVs: 0 SpA
- Dragon Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake

Charziard is my awesome physical setup sweeper. Because of it's spread, even before DD it can deal some good damage. Earthquake is there for Heatran, but since I already have Excadrill in my team, which has it as well, I was thinking of replacing it for thunder punch. It would give me other kind of coverage, it would take advantage of it's hidden ability, and it would also allow me to deal with azumarill (they have given me problems before).

530.gif

Excadrill @ Air Balloon
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
IVs: 0 SpA
- Rapid Spin
- Earthquake
- Swords Dance
- Rock Slide

Excadrill is used to take out stealth rocks, because as long as they are in the field, I can't switch to talonflame or charizard! This is the standard set from the smogon pokedex for a spinner. I replaced
Iron Head with Swords Dance because I can't have access to it.

235.gif

Smeargle @ Focus Sash
Ability: Own Tempo
EVs: 96 HP / 120 Def / 40 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Sticky Web
- Stealth Rock
- Spore
- Spikes

Smeargle is my lead, unless there's something like an espeon on the other side, or something like a weaville, that can outspeed me and make my focus sash not proc. It's a good hazard setter. In the beginning I had magic coat over spikes, but never found a use for it. Also, the opponent was free to setup while smeargle was in the field. Now, if they try to setup, at least I can keep stacking spikes.

Talonflame @ Choice Band
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
IVs: 0 SpA
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- U-turn
- Roost

Talonflame is a pretty good revenge killer. It entered in place of gothitelle/gengar. With choice band I have a tremendous boost to my atk. With it, even if I hit the opponent for neutral damage, it's still good. Standard banded set, not much to say.

479-wash.gif

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 216 Def / 44 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split

Rotom entered in my team because I was having problems with talonflames. They could kill 2-3 pokemons of mine before dying from recoil. Also, I found that volt switch was very useful sometimes, for coverage and momentum. Not much to say besides this, standard set.

======================

So, I've manage to reach 1300 with this team, but I have a really hard time against stall teams, more defensive oriented teams, and some pokemons like azumarill. Everytime the opponent puts a wall in the field, be it physical or special, I always feel that I can't deal with it very well. The only pokemon that I really want to stay is Charizard and, if I had to choose one to replace, it would be Greninja. After some games played, he is powerful, but not powerful enough I feel, and is also very fragile, often being OHKED by anything neutral.

All feedback is very appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Fipas your team looks nice. Rotom-w it's the oly bulk pokè here, you can try to use all offensive pokemons.

I wanna try to give some advices to improve your team.
Sash smeargle is not a bad idea, but i think is better this set:

Smeargle @ Focus Sash
Ability: Technichan ----> more power for nuzzle
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Sticky Web
- Stealth Rock
- Nuzzle -----> to paralize op mon and get easily your mon sweep
- Magic Coat / Spore------> to not be taunted / puts opponent to sleep.

I think you can replace u turn on Greninja with HP Grass / Grass Knot to put down bulky water/ground pokes that can grive problems to charizard.
To not have problems with other offensive teams you can try to use Choice Band Dragonite that helps a lot with ist powerful ExtremeSpeed :

Dragonite @ Choice Band
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Outrage
- Extreme Speed
- Fire Punch
- Earthquake
.

If u have a lot of problems with stealth rock u can try to replace smeargle with another sash lead setter as terrakion or mamoswine and use one latwin as defogger instead of d nite as last mon.

Gl & Hf :]

hi there, this team has potential but based on what you have said I have a few suggestions :)

To replace Excadrill:
Defogger + StallBreaker:
Mew @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 104 Def / 152 Spe
Bold Nature
- Taunt
- Soft-Boiled
- Will-O-Wisp
- Defog
This will essentially be doing two roles at once, first being a fast Defogger to help keep your field clean for your two 4x weak guys, the second role being a stall counter of sorts. It has EV's invested in bulk so that it can survive switches etc.

Bulky Zard X
Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 144 HP / 252 Atk / 112 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Dragon Claw
- Flare Blitz
- Roost
Most of your team are very frail, with the extra bulk investment it can tank slightly better. The EVs should be a HP number to take 1% less damage from stealth rocks. After one D-dance it can out-speed most pokemon so it can do some serious work with a good prediction.

Well, first off, he's probably running and in-game team. He may not have access to Mew or such.
If you do, I agree with Frozen Arrow 's changes, BulkyZard X included. Although I'm thinking about a way to fit WoW there. It may not fit at all, but I like WoW personally.

Talonflame is a mon that gets a lot of switches if played right. The imediate force of Banded Brave Bird is very rewarding but you can try the ridiculous power of Swords Dance + Life Orb on those predictable switches. You don't lose a lot of imediate power with the 30% from LO and gets a boosting move if you manage to predict something like a Scarf Earthquake. However, you lose on momentum by replacing U-Turn.

Lastly, I'm not quite sure about Smeargle being quintessential. Since you have problem with defensive teams, you could try a Stallbreaker set with Crobat

Crobat @ Leftovers
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Jolly Nature
- Taunt
- Roost
- Toxic
- Brave Bird

It's a very biased opinion, okay? I love Crobats <3 lol
However, it works marvelously agains stalls, since its Taunt is fast as heck and Toxic damage will take its tool quite quickly and goes right behind Subs!
Brave Bird can still pack a punch too, dealing about 25% on Eviolite 252+ Def Chansey is something.
Lastly, Roost is the basic recover move, allowing it to stallbreak longer.

Well, I believe there may be another Stallbreakers out there, but these are my thoughts.

I know this is old but I have to say that you should switch rotom-w with a wobbuffett... it elmiinates any wall of your choice (as long as you put the attack pursuit on your team) with this set:

Wobbuffet @ Leftovers
Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 200 Def / 56 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Encore
- Counter
- Mirror Coat
- Tickle

Hey great team you have here. Just wanted to let you know what I think would better your team.

Greninja is a great special sweeper. As Axily said, you should probably run Grass Knot / Hidden Power Grass instead of U-turn to counter Pokemon such as Swampert, Quagsire, and other Water / Ground types that Greninja can't touch.

Mega Charizard X doesn't need THAT much coverage. Due to Flare Blitz, it damages itself really easily due to recoil. So I would recommend Roost instead of Earthquake. The EVs look fine though; however, in my opinion having that 4 in HP is a bit better, cuz ya never know.

Right now on your team, you have a Rapid Spinner. Which is great. Although, I really hope you can get Iron Head. I know it may be for your console game; however, Iron Head is crucial to knock out bulky fairies.

Smeargle looks good; however, I really don't think it is a necessity to your team. I can't think of any other good all around hazard setters either lol.

Talonflame. Yes Choice band makes talonflame a total beast out there, but instead of using Choice Band I would recommend Leftovers. Switching Talonflame out just to Roost up is not worth the extra damage that would be coming in. So run Leftovers instead.

Finally, Rotom-W is a great Pokemon on your team. You would probably want to run Thunderbolt instead of Pain Split on Rotom, and here is why: when only having Volt Switch, a low-damaging move. It can't OHKO the water type mons that you want it to KO. Instead running Thunderbolt means that you have another path to do more damage, and not have to switch out. Its a great move with more power as well.

Anyways hope I helped :]
