First OU Team - Completely New to 5th Gen

Okay, so I'm a fairly decent 4th Gen battler (OU). I have completely ignored the B/W information that everyone has been talking about, besides looking at some cool new abilities/moves/pokes (only the "more famous" pokes like Doryuuzu and Shandera). Today I finally decided to start playing B/W (mostly because so few people seem to search for Gen4 battles). Anyway, I know very little about what to predict and etc. at the moment. I made this team without thinking about counters/countering/etc. I just made a team that I figured would work pretty well based on how the pokemon work in conjunction with each other. Pretty random, but I don't honestly care. I'm mainly doing this as an excuse to have other people who have already gone deep into B/W bring me up to speed :P

Any help or thoughts are appreciated. I know that there are still a ton of gimmicky sets and random pokemon in use, and understand that countering everything is impossible. However, I'm open to anything (and I know there are surely some major flaws I can fix).

Without further ado:

Here's my overall team strategy: I open with what I consider to be a good & easy to use lead. I try to paralyze as much as I can, and get an early KO or two. Paralyzis (spelled it wrong . . .) support is good for pokes like Breloom (when I'm not Sporing), Tyranitar, and Kerudio (outspeed even more stuff :P). At least it seems that way. I try to keep Genosekuto alive for later in the match. Now I use a random group of good (at least individually) pokes to try and eliminate my opponents wheather/speed boost strategy. Scarf Mence, TechniLoom, and CMKerudio hit plenty of stuff hard. I like to use them as much as possible before I bring in my (usual) game ender. Since most people get wheather started early, my Tyranitar is able to get rid of whatever they can no longer re-instate and set up SS support for Doryuuzu. Genosekuto can also function well at this point. I try to follow these guidlines whenever I can, but mostly I end up flying by the seat of my pants. There is a lot of new stuff for me to now count for . . . . .

In Depth Analysis:

Lead: Genosekuto
649.png

Timid Nature w/ Leftovers
Ability: Download

4 HP/ 252 SpA/ 252 Speed
  • Flamethrower
  • Thunderbolt
  • Bug Buzz
  • Thunderwave
As far as I have seen, Genosekuto does fairly well against most leads. I think I may have seen this exact set or close to it on one of my opponents (as a lead as well) so maybe it wasn't such a bad idea to choose it as a lead. I actually chose to add it last, because I wanted a special attacker that could fair well in the sandstorm. Download is nice, and I love surprising(?) some stuff with thunderwave (for all I know, this could be close to a common set xD). The biggest issue I have faced here is lead Dragonite. Apparently they thought I would have Ice Beam for sure, because they took forever to decide to stay in and pray I don't IB. I would love to fit it into my moveset, but I think I would be forcing myself to dump Bugg Buzz. Thunderbolt is necessary against the 4 cloyster leads that I faced, and Flamethrower for other Genosekutos/etc. Again, worked really well but could be better. I mostly wanted the special attack and SS resistance. Recovery from Lefties is great, because this almost always comes back into the game later.

Water + Special attacker: Kerudio

647.png

Timid Nature w/ Life Orb
Ability: Justice Heart
4 HP/ 252 SpA/ 252 Speed

  • Hydro Pump
  • HP Electric 70
  • Mystery Sword
  • Calm Mind
This thing definetly looked good to me on paper, and it did net me a few easy kills, but overall I just felt like I wasn't using it to it's full potential. The idea was for a fight type and water type, all as one pokemon; but basically I just wanted a good Calm Mind pokemon. The issue I kept having was that I would die to quickly, either from wheather, Life Orb Recoil, Status, or a poor switch (can't really help me there :P). I love the typing, the stats check out, and the moves work. I just think that I could probably find something that works better for my team. Or maybe it fits perfectly, and I'm just using it at the wrong time (usually early . . .) or in the wrong way. It was able to take a hit or so, but never very much . . . . . . thoughts? I had planed to use this pokemon (along with my lead (not as much), and the next two pokes, before I brought out my sandstorm tandem later in the game. I like using it, but maybe a better water type will help my team better?

Grass + Revenge: Breloom

286.png

Jolly Nature w/ Meadow Plate
Ability: Technician
4 HP/ 252 Atk/ 252 Speed

  • Mach Punch
  • Bullet Seed
  • Spore
  • Stone Edge
I use a Jolly nature because Breloom can use the speed. Besides, he isn't my main physical attacker. His job is to revenge kill or damage anything (almost anything) faster then my pokes. Bullet Seed and Technician must be broken :D I like it more than SubPunch. Mach Punch is as good as the abused Scizor BP (with same nature + item) . . . it's just amazing. Bullet Seed easily KOs opponents Politoed, Stone Edge KOs Shandera, Meadow Plate is because I don't want to be losing a ton of health thanks to SS if I get to set it up/still have breloom alive (or maybe they set it up). I believe that the given nature allows Breloom to reach 262 speed, its not great but I found it necessary in Gen 4 to make Breloom Jolly. Maybe I should change it to adamant? I assume anyone that wll be making a serious rate can understand enough about what this pokemon is, and what it does, to allow me to stop here.

Surprise + Mixed: Salamence
373.png

Hasty Nature w/ Choice Scarf
Ability: Earthquake Spiral
40 Atk/ 216 SpA/ 252 Speed

  • Earthquake
  • Flamethrower
  • Brick Break / Aerial Ace
  • Draco Meteor
To be brutally honest, I edited tis set as I was writing it up. It used to be more specially based, with Hydro Pump instead of Brick Break, but I noticed that that would make a large portion of my team special attackers. Plus I figured that Hydro Pumps accuracy isn't the best . . . Maybe something to change right away is the EVs? Since I made it more physical, and gave it the ability that boosts attack, it may make sense. The reason I gave it this ability, is because I figured the most people would be expecting a DD set. Come in, quick KO, come out. Or something like that . . . The resistances/immunities are also good for my team, although I have been asked why I didn't use Dragonite. Would Dragonite work better? I used Mance because of the higher speed, and (I think) higher special attack. Dragon is, as always, a great STAB.

SS Support + Pursuit: Tyranitar:
248.png

Hasty w/ Babiri/Chopple(?) Berry
Ability: Sand Stream

252 Atk/ 16 SpA/ 240 Speed
  • Pursuit
  • Fire Blast
  • Stone Edge
  • Superpower / Ice Punch (?)
This set's job is basically to get SS up. Its never done much else either, although I admit it never seemed to get the chance. I wanted to use Fire Blast for hitting defensive pokes hard (Skarmory, etc.), Pursuit is there for obvious reasons, as is Stone Edge. I'm pretty disappointed with Superpower, as it constantly fails to do as much damage as I anticipate it doing . . . I actually would have used Hippowdon, but I was afraid that it would be too easily killed by some special attacker, or that it would ruin my offensive momentum. I have had trouble with Gliscor, once Kerudio dies (another reason for IB on Genusekuto) so maybe Ice Punch could work in place of Super Power? Tyranitar does a good job of trapping stuff, but it has often left it too weak to do much else (besides block a hit and re-instate ss). If there were some better way to get SS . . . I would do it. The multitude of fighting types now part of the game makes TTar fairly useless (until I KO the fighter/they send in a Physcic/Ghost). I'm sure its a similar story with this elsewhere as well.

Wheater abuse/ late game sweeper: Doryuuzu
530.png

Adamant w/ Leftovers
Ability: You get 1 guess O.o

4 HP/ 252 Atk/ 252 Speed
  • Swords Dance
  • Earthquake
  • Rock Slide
  • Return
The beast of Unova. I run adamant over Jolly because my game plan involves eliminating the opponents Doryuuzu as quickly as I can. I usually don't have much competition in the speed field at this point. Proiority is the bane of this pokemon though, I could potentially run substitute or something in the last slot, but Return gets me better coverage. The best part about using this poke, is that most people expect a SD right away . . . I laugh at that. With a base 135 speed, I don't even need a SD to kill lots of things. Again, this poke is very self explanitory (so I shouldn't need to bore you any longer). I chose this pokemon because it looks cool and because even without playing 5th Gen, I can't help but hear of its awesomeness.

Any and all rates will be appreciated. I can't wait to hear how crap this team is . . . . . .

Well there you have it. I don't know enough about 5th Gen to make a threat list yet, so I'l just keep a (editing constantly) list of things that have given me problems. Here you go:

  • Gliscor
  • (Lead) Dragonite
  • (I'll put more as I remember/meet them)

Your experience with pokemon in general but inexperience with this Gen certainly do show lol. Don't worry, we'll get you up and running!

A much better paralysis lead is Borotorosu/Voltolos. With Mischievoue Heart your Thunder Wave will always go first, as will Taunt which prevents enemies from setting up rocks.

Borotorosu@Leftovers
Timid 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spd
Thunderbolt
Thunder Wave
Taunt
HP Ice

HP Ice gives you pseudo boltbeam coverage. It's typing also makes it an amazing Gliscor counter being immune to EQ and resisting Acrobat, and you OHKO with HP Ice.

Calm Mind Kerudio is perfectly fine, but you're right in the fact that SS and LO will kill yourself far too quickly. Latias makes for a great Calm Mind user and is slightly faster than Kerudio even, and has instant recovery.

Latias@Lum Berry
Timid 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spd
Calm Mind
Dragon Pulse
Surf
Recover

While the speed is mandatory, you can either make yourself a bulky sweeper and invest in HP, since Latias has amazing special defense, or you can just maximize special attack. Dragon and Surf give you perfect coverage aside from Nattorei and Empoleon, but with instant recovery and good typing it will probably thrive in the sand better. Likewise you could also try Nasty Plot Lucario.

Breloom seems ok. Most people opt for Sword Dance over Stone Edge but the coverage couldn't hurt. Jolly with SD or Adamant with SE seem like the better options.

Earthquake Spiral only increases your physical attack when you get a kill. Mixed scarf Salamence seems kind of counter intuitive. Why not just use Scarfchomp?

Mixed T-tar definitely seems like the best option since so many pokemon try to counter it physically. Use Pursuit for trapping Shanderaa and a few others and then use Fire Blast, Ice Beam and either EQ or Stone Edge.

The standard Doryuzuu uses Balloon and Jolly. And while you say you hold out on throwing yours out until the opponent's is gone, good players save their Doryuzuu for last as well until the checks like Roopushin, Skarmory and Gliscor are gone. In a Doryuzuu fight yours will lose every time.

Honestly though I don't find Doryuzuu too intimidating because it's so predictable and I've only ever been swept by it once in the months I've been playing. Landlos on the other hand is FAR more dangerous.

Landlos@Life Orb
Sand Power
Jolly 252 At / 252 Spd
Earthquake
Stone Edge
U-Turn/HP Ice
Sword Dance/Rock Polish

It's far more versatile, has much better typing, and can even go mixed. I find Doryuzuu to be nearly a pushover quite honestly, whereas this thing has more immediate power and can be even faster than Dory after a Rock Polish. It's very hard to counter this thing since HP Ice is becoming a new standard for Gliscor, which used to wall it outright.

So that's my advice, do what you will with it. Good luck.
