Welcome, forum dweller, to Smogon’s very own Battle-by-Post forum game! You’ve just come across a place of wonders and where common sense certainly doesn’t exist anymore, yet there is still a set of rules to go by:
  1. Obviously, Smogon’s general rules still apply. Even your team of powerful Pokémon can’t protect you from that!
  2. While friendly banter is rather common among those who sprinkle their battles with flavor, do not insult another member or display unsportsmanlike behavior. It won’t get you far anyway.
  3. This is a forum game. If you want to discuss Smogon metagames, you’re not at the right place. If you want to talk about the game proper, then the Orange Islands subforum is what you’re looking for, not this one.
  4. The only threads where discussing ideas is allowed are those with the Discussion tag. Don’t spontaneously go criticizing the way a player orders in their battle.
  5. Related to the above, but you probably shouldn’t post in battles where you’re not involved.
  6. Do not create threads you aren’t allowed to, like Discussion threads of your own or roleplays that haven’t been approved.
  7. As a general rule of thumb, please check if there is a “central thread” where you could find what you need before creating a thread dedicated to only one topic.
You may notice the different tags you can use before a thread’s title. They all have their own function:
  • Ongoing is used for regular matches that are still underway. Regular matches include everything but roleplays, Gym matches, and Tournament matches.
  • Once a regular match is over, the referee has to change the tag to Completed, which indicates it has ended
  • The Competitive and Contest tags are used for League Circuit matches and Contest threads, respectively. These tags don’t change to Completed after completion, to keep track of them
  • Facility tags are used for Trainers' Facility threads, such as their personal Tree or Safari thread
  • Data threads aren’t matches, but various resources or signup threads. You shouldn’t really worry about handling this tag unless you’re interested in creating a RP or becoming a moderator
  • Discussion threads are where balance issues and game changes as a whole take place. Similarly, you probably won’t create a Discussion thread unless you’re part of the deciding team. We do hope you participate in them as much as possible though!
Data, Discussion and Rules threads can only be put up by moderators.

Feel free to join us in the BBP Discord!
We wish you a pleasant stay within the community!
