oh-ho, that is something now huh? I like the mini-lumiose mountainous area to the left. Many more areas than I figured, even if judging by the dots most of them would have been small offshoots.
Guess they scaled back this pretty early on. Probably would have brought it back to Z....
Apparently there are barely any playable areas in that build in general (May 25 2012) and it was removed by August 31's build.
This fits into my long-standing gut feeling on Z in general, i.e. it never got past conceptual stages
This isn't proof for or against that, the devs cut it because it wasn't in the plans for the game they were working on

the schedule was too busy, this has been known as the reason why it never happened for like years

This could just be copium but honestly if Game Freak's own upcoming Kalos revisit isn't gonna touch on this stuff one has to question how important it really was. Like Scrafty said it seems analogous to the Battle Zone
I think it's entirely unrelated to that feeling, on account of being a decision done for the flagship base level game 2 years before it came out.
The upcoming Kalos revisit that is likely not going to touch most of Kalos (in the worst case, literally only Lumiose!) so I don't think it tells us anything more.

There's nothing to cope about. It was an early concept that didn't get very far into development.
It's interesting to me how people have glorified the idea of Pokémon Z over the years. A lot of folks seems convinced that this would be the greatest Pokémon game of all time, somehow

I do think they would have revisited this southern plan more in a Z version, but yeah I imagine it'd probably be pretty minor in the grand scheme. Another town or two, and the dungeons would likely be small. But just a nice bonus, maybe some plot stuff. Maybe we'd get to see the dang forest/mountain the xerneas stump/yveltal cocoon were kept.
Assuming they weren't already repurposed; perhaps one of these areas became Terminus Cave?
it does get weird when people think everything will be massively expanded, though. Even the power plants I imagine would have just been relatively small mini-dungeons.
Pokemon Z and Pokemon Stars are both big hype in the community because they are the only two mainline games that have credible evidence to them having been planned and yet not releasing.
Obviously all of the games have tons of revisions, cut concepts, cut content, but they all released eventually. As far as we know, Pokemon Z basically didn't happen because there was simply a labor shortage, everything in the media cycle was pushing for it. Zygarde anime Arc XYZ, Zygarde just never getting anything in a mainline entry until Gen 7, the Southern Kalos expansion we never got, Powerplant, etc.
I don't think most people think Z would be the best game ever. XY is just the most cucked region lol. Pokemon Stars for what we know was basically just USUM on Switch, but we ultimately got the content there. Kalos is the only time that a region just didn't end up getting a planned game

Unless it did a complete from-the-ground-up rewrite far outside the scope of any story changes Game Freak has ever done it probably would be like, my 4th fav max. Like ant said it's more a matter of principle. Sometimes I wonder if Z being abandoned at all motivated the move to DLC so something like it could never happen again. Does that even make sense? I dunno.

I don't think source code on its own necessarily opens avenues to end (supposed?) stagnation. Especially if that stagnation & limitations would be caused by other factors. Like the 3DS itself, or something.

Oh yeah, I forgot I don't know anything about programming. I seem to recall the dev repository leak being kind of a minor thing that didn't reveal a whole lot, but maybe I seriously underestimated it?
I also wanna take the moment to say this is kind of what I meant by my Legends Z-A comment, just very badly worded. Basically what I was trying to say is that the fans have gotten themselves overly emotionally invested in the myth of Z version more than the actual developers have. Yes, it would've been ideal if it happened, but like Lontra said there's absolutely a subset of fans that have given it undue importance as this mystical ubergame that would've made 3DS Kalos the bestest ever whose cancellation forever altered Pokemon's trajectory for the worse when in reality it would've most likely just been some tweaks to the plot to facilitate Zygarde and a lil extra slice of postgame content in line with what Platinum, USUM or even the Switch game DLCs brought. If Game Freak themselves shared anywhere near this belief you would think that upon finally getting a chance to go back to Kalos they'd take the opportunity to "make things right" as it were. Instead they've gone in a completely different direction, which conveys to me that their point of view is closer to mine: It sucks that it had to be set aside, but it was ultimately never significant enough to be worth dwelling on.
The Gen 7 git was kind of split and didn't have things like the assets and other stats to be compilable alone. I suppose the hope for people talking about romhacks is if the Gen 6 SVN is still in a fully compilable form, like the DS stuff so far, it would be something different to work with (if you don't care for the legality) and can potentially target PC platforms.
I wonder if they were at least considered as an evolutionary line before the form change was nailed down. I could easily see "Castform->level up in-battle with a weather effect in place -> Evo themed around that weather" being a concept they were playing with.
I love this design so much.
Anyways, they're based on a random alien sighting from the 1950's. The gems weren't part of that description, GF added them in to replace the glowing eyes in the original story, so it's odd to me that we see them making the gems the focus repeatedly.
XY had a lot of really good elements and also glaring omissions. I don't mean Southern Kalos and the Power Plant, but stuff like Sky/Inverse/Restaurant battles going nowhere, the lack of pre-E4 megastones, the weakness of the gym leaders, Zygarde's deal, all would have been very easy to improve for a sequel. I liked XY, but they definitely stumbled in places. Unlike, for example, SwSh, I think the stumbles would have been very easy to fix on a second pass, and that sort of hope can cause a lot of drama in a fanbase.
I wasn't aware that Gen 2 had more designs dropped. Or did you mean all the Gen 3 designs we'd been looking at?
In the original centro thread, there were 2 designs with a gen 2 pixel/design style (a tanuki and a little worm guy). Centro deleted them after people called them out, but I think some people still think theyre beta pokémon.
All of the other gen guys are legit as far as I know. These two mons and the xy interviews are the only things confirmed as fake
People were posting random gen 2 looking sprites (a tanuki with 5 colours) from a fangame (moncraft) in one of the threads and I guess they may have been spread around but weren't posted here, though I guess it's better to be preemptive about these things.
Speaking of which I am still an anti-alien doomer for the time being and I believe that resetera guy who took credit for that greentext.
