Gamestop Aftermath: Your opinion on PBR

In the aftermath of gamestop, what are your opinions on PBR?

I originally started this out because I didn't get to play (I had somebody trade get me a Darkrai on my last game so I had to re start at the last minute in fear of them checking my PokeDex, I traded my entire team to my friend then got it back on my new game and the guy was like "U ONL HAV 17 POKS N TEH POKDECKS ND I NEVA HERD OF WEEFEE SO U NOT GON PLA", so yeah) and I was thinking of buying a Wii and PBR (also was going to get stuff like Zelda), but then I also thought that this could be an interesting discussion for everybody else.

PBR is good for comedic value. Seriously. WHen Metagross used Meteor Mash on Alakazam, I yelled "K.O!" because it seriously looked like a fighting game, especially Alakazam's flop. I was seriously expecting "METAGROSS! wIN!" to flash ont eh screen. For Crunch, I totally loved how the Pokemon kind of meanced, like a really cheap horror flick, before slashing them. Surf was pretty cool, how the water "hit" the camera. I couldn't hear the announcer very well, so I can't comment on him.

The lack of being able to set options became annoying though. For every game our host had to go through the options and set it to single. Why can't the game just remember "single battle" until the Wii is turned off, at least? I'm sure even that would annoy people who own the game and would want to play single battles all the time.

Pokemon Battle Revolution shocked me.

No, really. I went in there expecting it to be like every other god damn stupid stadium game I've ever played. The sort of game that takes about 15 minutes per turn because of ridiculously silly and unbelievably long animations. Then I actually played it...

Battling on PBR is much faster than battling on DP, believe it or not. The animations may be flashy, but they are also fast. Leftovers doesn't take a million years. Sandstorm is done in an instant! Last but certainly not least, the animations are seriously getting better. We actually have pokemon hitting each other, burning each other. There's a slight bit of cartoon violence for once. A good deal of the animations are actually good, instead of being universally hilarious like in the past games.

I agree, PBR is so much better than DS. Its as if they purposely made the DS version to suck.

Surgo basically nailed it on the head.

Don't worry, bud. I can't even play my copy because I don't have a Wii (or a television).

Yeah, I still can't believe that last part even though it's been two days since you told me. You're the first person I've ever talked to that doesn't have a TV. Well if you're not going to play it why don't you send it to me. :P

The fact that in PBR health bars decrease in about a second and a half at most versus the half-minute waits for some hits over Wifi pretty much means that it will always be faster barring some stupid shit, especially when you consider a lot of PBR attack animations aren't that much longer than their DS equivalents, if not shorter.

That said, this was my first chance at DS battle, so my comments on the game mode:

-needs a better way to switch DSes around when you have more than 4 people.
-As someone already said, the game really should remember the ruleset and battle format until you change them. The nice thing is that at least if you tweak one of the three custom ruleset slots, that will stay the same until the Wii is shutoff.
-There were one or two random disconnects where the Wii would lose contact with the DSes, which would force a restart of the match. Fortunately the first one happened when I was helping the Gamespot people setup/test the game, and the other happened two or three rounds into the match. I don't know what caused it, but for long battles losing that connection during a close match and having to start all over would be infuriating.

I also think battling on PBR was much better than DS battling. The animations are pretty good, the pokemon models aren't bad (except for Azelf, it looks like one of those leamers with huge bat eyes) and the attack animations are good. I particularly like how Sandstorm+Leftovers don't take 30 seconds each, and are done in about 1.

My only problem now is that I can't seem to get my team onto random Wi-Fi, it keeps saying my pokemon aren't allowed (no, I don't use PokeSav, although my friend who does has no problem battling with his PokeSav'd pokemon on random Wi-Fi)

I really enjoyed my time with PBR. After all the times I'd watched it on YouTube and dismissed it as a "cheap cash-in" really is overlooking the overall fluidity and speed of the battles. The bloom lighting on the Pokemon and trainers looks great, and very few attack animations are indeterminate blobs of colored circles like last gen's 3D offerings.

Still, I'd say the "right price" for this game is no where near $50. $25 seems reasonable, but I'll take it for free, sure!

I won my tournament and I've had some fun with the solo on PBR, but the rental passes are so ho-hum. I uploaded all my pokemon, too, just to see my junk in 3D, mostly. Most if not all the Gen IV Pokemon look fantastic, with many of the ugliest of the old getting a nice face lift of sorts. Random Pokemon still look aweful, though, like Aipom. Rayquaza, by comparason, is nothing short of awe-inspiring!

I've yet to mess with the wi-fi battles, as I've been told your guys have to be of the same level, since it won't automatically set you to 50? Not too sure about that, but I think I've had enough Pokemon for one day... I trained 5 Pokemon in two days and I'm worn out.

It was worth it, though. I totally cleaned house.

You probably can't get your team through random wifi because of the lv50 cap. Sucks doesn't it, all that training to lv100 for nothing.

Honestly, PBR's only major flaw is the difficulty in changing players (rules resets take time in a tournament setting). Battling is faster paced, which has me certain that I will need to obtain wiis and things before I run a serious event of my own (date tba, but likely at Fanime Con's game room next year).

I think it was excellent fun all in all.

PBR sucked where I was, the changing was to much of a hassle and you must reset rules. I like PBR since I already had it but having 10 little kids saying "omg that hyper beams gonna hurt that skamory" kind of ruins the whole thing for you and being in a small area right in front of the door for 3 hours sucks so i hated the game after that.

I've owned PBR since 2 days after it's American launch, and my team which consists of Pokemon level 83-96 can battle in WiFi random matches, so that can't be the problem. It auto-sets your Pokemon to level 50 like the D/P Battle Tower.

Everything about PBR friend matches is superior to D/P matches, imo. $50 is a little costly for an add-on, but it's cool nonetheless.

No, not the exact same message, I just can't enter them. And no, they're not hacked because they made it past the filter. I read the manual and it says that your pokemon have to at, or below lv50 to do random battles.

The message I get is something like "There are pokemon on your Battle Pass that aren't allowed in this battle", or something along those lines. I didn't read the manual, but I KNOW my pokemon aren't hacked. Though I heard on GameFAQ's (reliable source, huh) that if your pokemon's IV's are to high, it won't let you on.

Anyways, my shiny Lucario using Dark Pulse is the coolest thing I've seen on PBR so far. The funniest thing is Dusknoir using Ice Punch on that same Lucario. It punched him right in the face XD The attack animations are really nice though, my friend and I have been battling each other all night.

PBR is really good, just like Surgo stated. I can't play my copy either since i dont have a Wii yet. =/

though, seismic toss is hilarious... my blissey threw a Palkia into space... XD

I saw a video somewhere of a Blissey using seismic toss on a Wailord and was instantly reminded of Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy.

The graphics are really bright and pretty, and even pokemon animations that were basically recycled from the gcn games (tyranitar, kyogre) look crisper. Giratina looks especially cool in this game.

I like how a lot of pokemon seem to have a sheen/glowing effect.

Several people used shiny pokemon at the tournament I was at and I thought all of them actually looked like they were in slightly higher resolution than normal pokemon, which is a nice touch if my eyes weren't simply playing tricks on me.

I don't know if I completely agree with the animations being faster than the DS games. The HP bar definitely drains much faster however which is excellent. sandstorm/toxic/leftovers/leech seed also take less time than in the ds games.

overall id use it for playing against others instead of ds wifi any day if it weren't for the fact that I still don't even own a Nintendo Wii.

Oh god.. someone else please confirm...

Lol, that's exactly the reason I posted here.

Also, the first time I used Seismic Toss was against a Giratina. I have to say, I started to break down laughing during the tournement, while all the little kids were screaming "WHOOOOOOOOOOOAH"

It does not reject legit Pokemon with high IVs. I've personally tested with a Pokemon that has three 31s and a total of around 174. I've recieved Friend Passes from people I've battle with Pokemon hacked to have straight 31s. Try switching around the Pokemon on your pass until you find one that works.

Thanks TRE. Do I need to switch the pokemon entirely, or will switching the order that they're in work?
