Garbodor is NU's premier Spiker thanks to its ability to bypass entry hazard removers like Eldegoss and poison Defoggers like Silvally-Water, Rotom-S, and Rotom-F with Toxic. It's also a good Fighting-type check, namely taking on Toxicroak and Sawk, and also acts as a blanket check to physical attackers such as Togedemaru and Gourgeist-S. The abundance of Clefairy usage gives Garbodor plenty of switch-in opportunities to set up Spikes, fire off a Gunk Shot, or put a Pokemon on a timer with Toxic. Stomping Tantrum allows Garbodor to deal with Pokemon like Togedemaru and Toxicroak. Toxic cripples the aforementioned Defoggers as well as walls like Wishiwashi and Cofagrigus lacking Rest. Pain Split can be used over Toxic to regain health, but Toxic's utility far outweighs Pain Split's. Toxic Spikes can also be used instead of Toxic, but the prevalence of Poison-types and Toxic Spikes-immune hazard removers generally makes it not worth using. Another advantage Garbodor has in NU is its ability Aftermath, which, in tandem with Rocky Helmet, can get significant chip damage off on Pokemon like the Silvally formes and Togedemaru. 56 Speed EVs let Garbodor outpace Adamant Perrserker and Timid Drampa. 136 Speed EVs with a Jolly nature can be used to outspeed Timid Abomasnow, but the reduced EVs in Defense generally aren't worth losing.
Garbodor's glaring Ground-type weakness makes Grass- and Water-types like Abomasnow, Eldegoss, Silvally-Water, and Wishiwashi excellent partners. Eldegoss, in particular, is a fantastic teammate due to its Rapid Spin not removing Garbodor's Spikes. Garbodor's other weakness, Psychic, also needs tending to; Dark-types like Silvally-Dark and Malamar can switch into Indeedee-F's Psychics. Steel-types such as Togedemaru and Galarian Stunfisk can support Garbodor with their Psychic-type resistance and ability to effectively deal with Indeedee-F. Clefairy is a great teammate, as it can switch into Indeedee-F and other strong special attackers, provide Wish support, and set up Stealth Rock, but be wary of Psyshock and Trick from Indeedee-F crippling it. In return, Garbodor can deal with Fighting-types for the aforementioned Dark- and Steel-type teammates and take on opposing Poison- and Steel-types for Clefairy. Fast Pokemon that can clean late-game like Indeedee-F, Togedemaru, Sawk, and Gourgeist-S should be used, as Garbodor's ability to stack Spikes can weaken the opponent's team significantly and give more leeway to these Pokemon. The opponent may predict Garbodor using Spikes and bring in wallbreakers like Drampa and Abomasnow, in which case Garbodor is better off attacking with Gunk Shot or pivoting out into a teammate that can handle them.
