This is my first RMT thread. Special thanks to clarinetist87 for helping me make it. <3
GASTROSAND '13
This Sand team attempts to overpower opponents with strong offensive Pokemon while Gastrodon helps protect against a major weakness (ie Water). While I would love to tell everyone that this team is all about setting up Excadrill sweeps, in all actuality a good chunk of my battles have ended with Gastrodon as the last man standing…and that little dude just kills everything that’s left.
I decided to run a 4 Pokemon team instead of 6 because it seemed like a good idea at the time. :3
Tyranitar “Molasses”
Brave – Sandstream
252 HP/252 Att/ 4 Sp.Def
-Rock Slide
-Crunch
-Low Kick
-Protect
@Focus Sash
Standard VGC Tyranitar. Her main functions are to bring in the weather, and to hopefully get in at least one good hit thanks to her Focus Sash. Rock Slide and Crunch are there for STAB, of course, with Low Kick for coverage. Protect is mandatory to deal with the ever-present fighting types (eg Hitmontop)
Gastrodon “Squish”
Calm – Storm Drain
252 HP/4 Def/248 Sp.Def/4 Spe
-Muddy Water
-Ice Beam
-Recover
-Protect
@ Rindo Berry
This little blue blob is my baby. Storm Drain plus his typing make him an invaluable asset to this team. Experienced players typically refrain from trying to hit Tyranitar or Excadrill with a Water attack while Gastrodon’s on the field, while unsuspecting players may go for it anyway and boost Gastrodon’s Special Attack. He can swallow non-crit STAB Outrages and Draco Meteors fairly well (then hit back the Dragons that dealt them pretty hard with Ice Beam!), and his Rindo Berry makes it where he can even handle a number of Grass attacks.
Latios “Luster”
Timid – Levitate
4 HP/4 Def/248 Sp.Att/4 SpDef/248 Spe [30 Spe IV]
-Dragon Pulse
-Psychic
-HP Fire
-Energy Ball
@Leftovers
Latios helps round out the team by protecting a lot of its weaknesses. In addition to having excellent specially offensive power, he is also the resident absorber of fighting, grass, and ground type attacks (Life is fantastic when he’s paired with Excadrill). Fighting types are hit strongly with STAB Psychic, while HP Fire takes out Grass types such as Abomasnow and Ferrothorn. I prefer Energy Ball over Protect for the coverage—it’s my second line of defense against Water types if Gastrodon faints. As Life Orb was taken and I didn’t want him locked into a particular move, I gave him Leftovers to negate sand damage.
Excadrill “Avogadro”
Adamant – Sand Rush
60 HP/252 Att/196 Spe
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- X-Scissor
- Protect
@Life Orb
Excadrill is the end-game sand sweeper, coming in faster than even Choice Scarf Terrakion with STAB Earthquake, Rock Slide, or X-Scissor (for those pesky Cresselia). If things are going badly, Protect can save her for a turn while Latios or Gastrodon attempt to take out the threat. Her Earthquake is massive and thoroughly kills non-flying and non-Levitating things dead.
Took this to the April International Challenge. Didn’t get to do as many battles as I would’ve liked (busy weekend), but I won 25 and lost 6. Struggled a bit more against Ghost types than I would have liked.
