Gastrosand 2013

This is my first RMT thread. Special thanks to clarinetist87 for helping me make it. <3

GASTROSAND '13

This Sand team attempts to overpower opponents with strong offensive Pokemon while Gastrodon helps protect against a major weakness (ie Water). While I would love to tell everyone that this team is all about setting up Excadrill sweeps, in all actuality a good chunk of my battles have ended with Gastrodon as the last man standing…and that little dude just kills everything that’s left.

I decided to run a 4 Pokemon team instead of 6 because it seemed like a good idea at the time. :3

Tyranitar “Molasses”
Brave – Sandstream
252 HP/252 Att/ 4 Sp.Def
-Rock Slide
-Crunch
-Low Kick
-Protect
@Focus Sash

Standard VGC Tyranitar. Her main functions are to bring in the weather, and to hopefully get in at least one good hit thanks to her Focus Sash. Rock Slide and Crunch are there for STAB, of course, with Low Kick for coverage. Protect is mandatory to deal with the ever-present fighting types (eg Hitmontop)

Gastrodon “Squish”
Calm – Storm Drain
252 HP/4 Def/248 Sp.Def/4 Spe
-Muddy Water
-Ice Beam
-Recover
-Protect
@ Rindo Berry

This little blue blob is my baby. Storm Drain plus his typing make him an invaluable asset to this team. Experienced players typically refrain from trying to hit Tyranitar or Excadrill with a Water attack while Gastrodon’s on the field, while unsuspecting players may go for it anyway and boost Gastrodon’s Special Attack. He can swallow non-crit STAB Outrages and Draco Meteors fairly well (then hit back the Dragons that dealt them pretty hard with Ice Beam!), and his Rindo Berry makes it where he can even handle a number of Grass attacks.

Latios “Luster”
Timid – Levitate
4 HP/4 Def/248 Sp.Att/4 SpDef/248 Spe [30 Spe IV]
-Dragon Pulse
-Psychic
-HP Fire
-Energy Ball
@Leftovers

Latios helps round out the team by protecting a lot of its weaknesses. In addition to having excellent specially offensive power, he is also the resident absorber of fighting, grass, and ground type attacks (Life is fantastic when he’s paired with Excadrill). Fighting types are hit strongly with STAB Psychic, while HP Fire takes out Grass types such as Abomasnow and Ferrothorn. I prefer Energy Ball over Protect for the coverage—it’s my second line of defense against Water types if Gastrodon faints. As Life Orb was taken and I didn’t want him locked into a particular move, I gave him Leftovers to negate sand damage.

Excadrill “Avogadro”
Adamant – Sand Rush
60 HP/252 Att/196 Spe
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- X-Scissor
- Protect
@Life Orb

Excadrill is the end-game sand sweeper, coming in faster than even Choice Scarf Terrakion with STAB Earthquake, Rock Slide, or X-Scissor (for those pesky Cresselia). If things are going badly, Protect can save her for a turn while Latios or Gastrodon attempt to take out the threat. Her Earthquake is massive and thoroughly kills non-flying and non-Levitating things dead.

Took this to the April International Challenge. Didn’t get to do as many battles as I would’ve liked (busy weekend), but I won 25 and lost 6. Struggled a bit more against Ghost types than I would have liked.

Hi, i guess you should've read the rules before posting - you're supposed to post a team consisting of 6 Pokemon. But I'm pretty sure you can always update your post and make it valid. Other than that there are a few things that I'd like to point out:
1) These four have a quite decent synergy and I think they could make a good core if you add the last 2 mons. Latios provides fighting, grass, water and ground resists but i think you should run Protect, or at least Sub on it. For more coverage I'd rather add a Grass or Fire type move on one of the 2 remaining mons.

2) I'm not sure if you're 100% familiar with IV/EV mechanics. 252 EVs with an even number of IVs make you waste four EVs that could bring you more profit on another stat. For HP Fire, if I remember that right, you need IVs like: 31/30/31/30/31/30, while 31/31/31/31/31/30 give you HP Ice. If you have an even number of IVs you should have an even number of "fours" of EVs, if you have an odd number of IVs you should have an odd number of "fours" of EVs, otherwise you waste EVs. Same thing with your Gastrodon (considering it's at least penta-flawless).

3) Let's get back to Latios for a while. If you lose one point in Speed you cannot speed-tie with max speed Latios, so if you really wanna HP Fire I'd decrease its Speed a little bit, maybe just to outspeed max speed Garchomp would work for you.

4) Could you explain Excadrill's EVs? What does it survive thanks to those 60 EVs you put in HP?

Even though you're missing 2 mons it was a good read, if you ask me I'd say that bulky Thundurus, Cresselia, defiant Tornadus or Gyarados would be the best additions to the team. Hope this helps.

Hahahaha...I told Clarinetist87 that this would happen. I did in fact read the rules, and they say not to post incomplete teams...not that you have to post a team with 6 Pokemon. VGC Metagame uses 4 Pokemon at a time, and this is a team of 4. Totally tournament legal! :) Anyway, I had difficulty finding alternates that had good synergy with this team. For what it's worth, though, I keep a Politoed and a Kingdra in my Battle Box with them as a way to confuse opponents.

Point taken on the Latios EV spread. I got him from Clarinetist87 already EV trained for level 100 and didn't actually think about it. This will be corrected ASAP...gonna throw 4 in Def and 4 in Sp Def.

In regards to Excadrill, she's copied from the 2012 Sand Sweeper set. Just enough EVs for outspeeding Choice Scarf Terrakion, then the rest go into bulk.

Thanks for your feedback! I'll look into what you said about Thundurus, Cresselia, Tornadus, and Gyarados as potential alternates. Much appreciated!

hey man, nice team even if it doesn't have all of the Pokemon yet. I second all of the EV changes above, but I think you could also improve them past 252 / 252.

By using a damage calc such as http://honko.byethost8.com/manly_calc.html , you can greatly optimize the spread. For example, TTar can survive a Max Attack Metagross' Meteor Mash by moving 36 EVs out of Atk and into Def.

For Gastrodon, this article will help you greatly! http://nuggetbridge.com/articles/gastrodon-for-dummies/

Latios and Excadrill look good!

As for Pokemon choice, you have an extremely solid 4 already. I think adding a Fire and Grass type would be the most beneficial to your team. This will create what is known as a FWG core with Gastrodon.

An extremely wise choice would be TR Chandelure, as TTar and Gastrodon can function well in TR. Also, Chandelure has phenomenal synergy with TTar, Latios, whichever Grass type you choose and Gastrodon. A nice, bulky spread for Chandelure is 244 HP / 20 Def / 24 SAtk / 220 SDef with a Sassy nature and a Fire Gem. (stolen from this wonderful article: http://nuggetbridge.com/articles/guide-to-hailroom/) With the help of Fire Gem and the Special Attack EVs, Chandelure is able to OHKO max HP Metagross and Scizor, while also OHKOing max Speed Chandelure with Shadow Ball. Defensively, Chandelure can tank Shadow Ball from opposing Chandelure, Earthquake from Jolly Garchomp, and Draco Meteor from Latios. This set works really well in Sand, because things that Chandelure can’t quite OHKO will die from Sand damage at the end of the turn. Hail teams usually have a hard time with Metagross, Chandelure, and Scizor so this Chandelure is pretty invaluable. Trick Room is an obvious choice for Chandelure since you’re using HailRoom, but because of all of Chandelure’s weaknesses, Protect is almost always a necessity. Shadow Ball works as a great STAB attack that will KO opposing Chandelure and Heat Wave is generally the preferred Fire-type move, especially when using Fire Gem.

A suggestion for a Grass type is Virizion. (as some know, Virizion is my fave mon <3) Anyway, Virizion gives you another nice check to Rain, killing Politoed and damaging things greatly with Leaf Blade. A wonderful EV spread for Virizion (created by moi) is 116 HP / 220 Atk / 132 Def / 4 SDef / 36 Speed Adamant. Here are some calcs for said EV spread. I like to use Quick Attack / Leaf Blade / Protect / Sacred Sword or Close Combat with a Grass Gem.
