Introduction

Heya Smogon. This RMT is basically a regular Gen 5 stall team. Thanks to new Pokemon such as the Burungeru/Nattorei core and items like Evolution Stone for Pokemon like Chansey, stall has been as dominating a force as ever. Unfortunately, it has been look down upon in place of more Hyper Offensive teams that erupted when pokemon like Shaymin-S had slipped through the initial banlist, and it looks like the metagame has been cemented into the form of Offense. However, after seeing many various players using stall effectively, I have come to see how stall is still an amazing force in this metagame, and I hope you will too. This team is by no means perfect, and still needs quite a bit of work, so I hope you are willing to chip in your ideas.

Team Building Process

The formula for my stall team follows a very simple premise. Find what is most popular in the metagame, and counter accordingly using bulky walls. Bliss/Skarm has been a core that has proven itself in the past several times, and continues to dominate the face of stall today. It checks many various threats, though with the invention of Psycho Shock, Blissey is not the great special sponge she once was, and there are many physical attackers like Blaziken, Hihidaruma, and to a lesser extent Landlos, which can break Skarmory's defenses.

242.png

Evolution Stone Dusclops was used over Burungeru as my spinblocker, specifically for the fact that it can shrug of most of Excadrill's (the most prominent spinner in this metagame) hits and hopefully burn in the process. The lack of leftovers hurts it quite a lot, but its amazing physical bulk and low HP means it is one of the perfect partners for Blissey, as Blissey can wish passes while Dusclops can wall a large portion of physical attackers.

Tentacruel was used because I needed a Toxic Spiker. I also wanted a Rapid Spinner. I shrugged off the idea of Forretress because it was generally too weak. The Explosion and Payback nerfs really crippled it. Starmie was considered for the role of a spinner; however, its lack of Toxic Spikes and inability to break through Burungeru and Dusclops forced me to choose Tentacruel as my Spinner and Toxic Spiker.

Swampert was chosen as a generic mixwall, and also a nice counter to almost all variants of Tyranitar. I chose to put Stealth Rock on it since it is the only Pokemon with a free slot on my team and could carry Stealth Rock. It is also the closest thing I have to a lead, countering the various Tyranitar leads that dominate the metagame.

Finally I needed something to patch up the small spots that the core of my team cannot defeat. I realised that, like with most stall teams, I have problem with Calm Mind / Cursing Rest Talkers such as CroCune, CurseLax and a new threat to stall itself Rankurusu. I chose Psych Up Barujiana for this role, an unorthdox member but a potent glue for my team.

I later weeded out the weaker members of my team and replaced them. Barujiana was replaced by Unaware Quagsire, who also took over for Swampert. Swampert was replaced by Celebi, mostly because I couldn't find a better Stealth Rock setter. Finally, Forretress replaced Tentacruel, as the metagame was generally not very nice to Tentacruel (Ground Attacks, Physical Attacks, etc).

In-Depth Analysis

251.png

Celebi @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Stealth Rock
- Recover
- Psychic
- Heal Bell

The closest thing I have to a lead, though Team Preview really destroyed the concept of a lead slot. It is my Stealth Rock user, as well as my Cleric. It walls other threats and is my trick absorber, hitting pretty hard with 100 base Special Attack, even uninvested. Psychic was used over Grass Knot to counter Breloom, who is a real pain in the neck for this team. It also hits Rotom-W harder (who weighs like -10 grams), despite being not as effective . It can take out weakened fighting threats also, such as Conkeldurr, who is also a real pain. I'm considering pasting more Special Defensive EV's on Celebi just to make it more of a Mix-Wall, but I'm not sure how much I should shove in.

356.png

Spinblocker (Dusclops) (M) @ Evolution Stone
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Night Shade
- Will-O-Wisp

A super bulky spinblocker arrived in Generation 3 in the name of Dusclops. His standing as the premier spinblocker had been crushed in Generation 4, when his evolution Dusknoir arrived on the scene, and the extremely annoying Rotom-Appliance forms were introduced. However, he arrives back in the game with a new trick in the form of Evolution Stone. Thanks to his low HP and super high defenses, Dusclops is an amazing spinblocker. Unfortunately, he has no passive recovery, takes a ton from entry hazards and his defenses are only so high.

His set is relatively simple, a rest talker mimicking that of Rotom-A. Will-O-Wisp will make most physical threats think twice about staying in, if they're not getting walled in the first place. EV's were initially dumped into Special Defense to handle Starmie better; however, I have been seeing less and less of Starmie around, probably thanks to the mass usage of Ferrothorn.

205.png

Forretress (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 248 Def / 8 SDef
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)
- Toxic Spikes
- Rapid Spin
- Gyro Ball
- Toxic

Other than Tentacruel, Cloyster, and Omystar, Forretress is the only Pokemon capable of Rapid Spinning and setting up Toxic Spikes at the same Time. Cloyster has Cloyster syndrome, taking 25% from SR and thus getting wrecked by the hazards which he attempts to spin away, which really makes its life a living hell. Tentacruel on the other hand, is generally too frail for my liking as I stated earlier. Omystar has a horrible typing, and even though it can "counter" Darmartian, it has less defenses than Forretress.

Toxic Spikes and Rapid Spin are a staple for most stall teams, and is even more important for hard stall. Gyro Ball was chosen as a general STAB and pretty heavy hitting move. Unfortunately for Forretress, he is unhappily walled by Burungeru, the most used spinblocker of 5th generation. The payback nerf did not help his cause either. Toxic was used as a what the hell move, and it really suprises Pokemon who use Forretress as setup fodder. It also helps against Burungeru.

227.png

Skarmory (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Brave Bird
- Spikes
- Roost
- Whirlwind

Skarmory was the main physical wall since Generation 2; not much has changed about it. Generation 4 just enhanced its dominance with the addition of Roost, and it is still much the same as it always has been in Generation 5. My dominant physical wall, my spiker, my phazor, it serves a lot of roles and is top of the class in every single one. Walls Excadrill and Scizor, both being extremely common in this metagame. I'm thinking of adding some Special Defense EVs, but for now I'm sticking with 252/252/4. One half of the BlissSkarm core that my team is comprised of.

242.png

Blissey (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Wish
- Protect
- Seismic Toss
- Toxic

Blissey was the main special wall since Generation 2, and much like Skarmory, not much has changed for it. Like Skarmory, it serves many roles, from being a Wish Passer to Forretress (who has no reliable recovery) and Dusclops to being a Status Absorber. It's mediocre physical defense is patched up somewhat by it's EV Spread, and Blissey is generally good enough at walling Special Threats that it doesn't many special defense EV's. Toxic is to slowly wear down opposing threats and works great when used with Protect. Protect is a nice scouting move in general, helping against things like CBTTar and CB Scizor.

195.png

Quagsire (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Unaware
EVs: 248 HP / 88 Def / 172 SDef
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Curse
- Recover
- Waterfall
- Earthquake

Unaware Quagsire is my answer for almost every setup sweeper that is not handled already by my team. It is a potent glue that helps against things like Rankurusu, some Ulgamoth, etc. It's movesest is fairly siimple, with Curse used to heighten it's already decent physical defense, and Special Defense to help with things like Rankurusu. The reason why I have EV's invested into defense is because there are many times when I will get 2HKO'd by physical attackers, even if I get a curse in my belt. Waterfall and EQ are basic STAB moves.

Threat List

Offensive Threats

567.png
Aakeosu - Walled fairly well by Dusclops, Skarmory and Quagsire, though it does a ton with a Choice Banded Head Smash to anyone, including resists.
142.png
Aerodactyl - Lead Aerodactyl's are annoying. I usually whip out Quagsire and Ice Beam them to death. Haven't seen any Stallbreaker/LO variants, but I assume ones without something like Hidden Power Grass would be stopped cold by Quagsire. Skarmory and Forretress can set up on variants without Fire Blast or Taunt.
482.png
Azelf - Nasty Plot Variants with Psycho Shock and Grass Knot are the most annoying ones. I Toxic it and then play around it. I have not yet seen one Lead Azelf, as they are stopped cold by the rampaging Tyranitars.
640.png
Birijion - Toxic it, Blissey does it's thing. STAB Focus Blast dents even Blissey though. Celebi can also work to an extent, though it risks being walled seeing as Birijion has stupid special defenses.
257.png
Blaziken - Quagsire is my main switch-in, though it takes a ton from Hi Jump Kick. Usually prediction and Toxic Spikes help me kill this thing.
642.png
Borutorosu - Quagsire can handle variants without Grass Knot. Blissey deserves mention, but Hammer Arm OHKO's it sadly. If it has no Hammer Arm (scout with Protect), then Blissey Toxic's it and does its thing.
286.png
Breloom - Celebi. The reason I chose Celebi for my Stealth Rocks actually. Dusclops can also work to an extent if Celebi is weakened.
534.png
Conkeldurr - Toxic it with Blissey, let it activate Guts and then use prediction. I have no better option, unfortunately.
386-speed.png
Deoxys-S - Leads are annoying, Forretress can generally take care of them though some carry Hidden Power Fire for whatever reason. Mixed Attackers are generally walled by Quagsire or Blissey after the Superpower Attack Drop.
149.png
Dragonite - Mixed Variants suck. Usually just burn it with Dusclops.
395.png
Empoleon - Blissey walls it, but threatens getting beaten if Empoleon has Toxic Spike support. Very rare. Even rarer are Swords Dance Variants, which are beaten by Skarmory.
196.png
Espeon - A general annoyance. I have to take it down with actual attacks, which makes it really annoying. CM variants are shut down by Quagsire. Dual Screening will not help much against my team.
530.png
Excadrill - Skarmory can wall it, Quagsire can wall it somewhat, but when it can flinch things with Rock Slide it's not really a fun thing to play with. I've seen teams desperately try to paralyze my Skarmory knowing that Paraflinch will mean that Doryuuzu can beat it's #1 counter most of the time.
445.png
Garchomp - Skarmory walls it, Dusclops can burn it, only really a threat when I get Sand Viel'd.
94.png
Gengar - Extremely annoying to play against. Quagsire does a good job, but still has a chance of being beaten. One of the reasons I am thinking of shoving special defense into my Forretress, though luckily it isn't too common.
130.png
Gyarados - Walled by Celebi unless it has Bounce. I usually burn it with Dusclops, who walls it fairly well too.
485.png
Heatran - Blissey and Quagsire are my answers to Heatran. Some carry HP Grass though, so I have to be careful with Quagsire, and even with the Explosion nerf it can still dent Blissey.
214.png
Heracross - Dusclops walls it kind of... Skarmory can OHKO it but lose a lot of health in the process if it has already obtained a Guts Boost. Status Orb + Swords Dance variants can punch holes through my team, especially if I mispredict.
555-normal.png
Hihidaruma - Hits like a truck. Even Quagsire is scared of this thing. Generally let it die to recoil, since as a Fire Type it takes 25% switching in, as well as additional damage from Spikes and Toxic Spikes. I usually lose one of my members though.
392.png
Infernape - MixApe will ruin my day, especially Balloon variants as they are immune to Toxic Spikes. I HAVE to get status on it no matter what, and hope that my prediction skills are good today. Luckily it's not very common thanks to Blaziken.
385.png
Jirachi - Versatile. I usually have to burn it with Dusclops. Depending on the set, I act accordingly. Superachi is taken out by Blissey, SubCM and CM Wish without Grass Knot is taken out by Quagsire, Sub T-Wave isn't a threat offensively but generally just annoying, the list goes on...
135.png
Jolteon - Walled by Blissey, and to a lesser extent Quagsire.
230.png
Kingdra - Specs sets are "walled" by Blissey, but still do stupid amounts of damage in rain. Luckily banned with Drizzle, but RD Mixed Attacker sets do a ton of damage. Usually Toxic Spikes wears it down quickly.
625.png
Kirikizan - Walled by Skarmory, who can set up on it. Also can be burnt by Dusclops, though it does a lot of damage with a SD boosted Night Slash.
620.png
Kojondo - Dusclops walls it. And walls it darn well. Not much else to say about it, except Blissey's Protect laughs at Scarf Variants trying to Hi Jump Kick.
646.png
Kyurem - Blissey walls it unless it's mixed. Then Forretress does an alright job, and can threaten with Gyro Ball.
381.png
Latios - Stupid. Celebi is my trick absorber since it usually just switches in and out. Blissey can handle DM, but not Psycho Shock, and runs the risk of getting tricked.
68.png
Machamp - Usually dismantled by Dusclops, who is immune to DynamicPunch and is slower than Machamp, so it only gets hit by a 50 Base Power Payback.
462.png
Magnezone - Wrecks my team up, seeing as 2 of my 3 Entry Hazard setups and my Spinner is a Steel-Type without Shed Shell. However, I haven't really considered giving a Shed Shell to either one of my Steel Types, since that Leftovers recovery is really crucial.
473.png
Mamoswine - Walled by Skarmory, even if it has Superpower/Icicle Drop and a Choice Band. Haven't seen any Mamoswine leads of late.
586.png
Mebukijika - DEER is unfortunately walled by Skarm and Jump Kick failing vs. Ghosts. Also Forretress.
376.png
Metagross - Walled by Forretress unless it has Fire Punch, Skarmory if it doesn't have ThunderPunch. Otherwise walled by Quagsire fairly well.
612.png
Ononokusu - "Walled" by Skarmory, though Swords Dance variants hit stupidly hard with + 2 Outrage and LO.
645.png
Randorosu - Walled by Skarmory(sort of) and Quagsire can Ice Beam it.
579.png
Rankurusu - Quagsire sets up on it. Sets that contain Psychic are troublesome, as the special defense drops really hurt.
373.png
Salamence - MixMence is still the bane of stall teams, especially variants without Outrage. I almost always to burn it or it'll dismantle my entire team. Quagsire can Ice Beam, but has to bank on revenge.
635.png
Sazandora - Blissey walls it to no end.
212.png
Scizor - I usually Burn Scizors since Superpower dents Skarmory pretty badly. Luckily I haven't seen too many CB Scizor; most are those SD Roost without Brick Break that are completely walled by Skarmory.
609.png
Shandera - Blissey or not, Specs Overheat demolishes any switch-in. Blissey takes around 40-50% from it, which is kinda annoying. Not too big of a problem though, SR + Spikes + Toxic Spikes takes care of it fairly well.
492-land.png
Shaymin - Leech Seed Protect owns almost all of my Pokemon, combined with the fact that most carry Hidden Power Fire for Ferrothorn nowadays. Blissey and Celebi are my answer, which is dissapointing because they are not very good ones.
589.png
Shubarugo - Walled by Skarmory. Burnt by Dusclops. Walled by Forretress. Unfortunately in my opinion, it's just a worse Scizor.
121.png
Starmie - Annoying, but virtually unseen. Have to play between Rapid Spin and LO STAB Hydro Pump with the possibility of being boosted by rain.
639.png
Terakion - I usually try to burn it, but if Will-O-Wisp misses then I bring in Quagsire, who walls it fairly well and can KO after Close Combat defense drops.
468.png
Togekiss - Nasty Plot. Heal Bell. FLINCHING. This thing ruins my team, so I'm happy that its extremely rarely used. I've only seen one during the release of B/W (it was a Nasty Plot Heal Bell variant and it owned me).
641.png
Torunerosu - Walled by Blissey, and Blissey walls it pretty well. Confusion can be annoying though.
248.png
Tyranitar - Quagsire walls Tyranitar to no end, which is awesome since Tyranitar is one of the most used Pokemon nowadays.
637.png
Urugamosu - Walled by Quagsire usually, though Bug Buzz's special defense drops makes it a pain.
3.png
Venusaur - Sun in general is stupid, and Growth Venusaur owns my team. I usually burn it, then stall it out.
571.png
Zoroark - Really, really annoying, especially when used creatively in order to bluff and stuff. Creates a lot of "mindgames".

Defensive Threats

242.png
Blissey - Dies quite quickly to entry-hazards, especially if it's a wish variant.
437.png
Bronzong - I hate Bronzong. If it doesn't get burnt, it will trouble my whole team, not by posing a threat but just by hanging around, since it's basically impervious to entry hazards.
593.png
Burungeru - Bulky, blocks off Forretress from Spinning, but luckily is crippled by Toxic. Taunt variants are annoying.
113.png
Chansey - See Blissey, except it's even easier to kill thanks to no leftovers.
386-defense.png
Deoxys-D - It gets hit by Toxic, dies to entry hazard damage.
356.png
Dusclops - Entry hazards work superbly in keeping Dusclops at bay.
547.png
Erufuun - A real big prick and pain in the neck. It's fun with Sub-Seeding is stopped by Celebi though.
205.png
Forretress - Burn it with Dusclops, wall it with Dusclops. It will eventually die as it has no reliable recovery.
472.png
Gliscor - Ice Beam from Quagsire 2HKO's. Not much else to say, other than that it's near impervious to entry hazards, which is annoying.
450.png
Hippowdon - Owned by Toxic Spikes, though it does set up Sandstorm which half of my team hates.
380.png
Latias - Toxic wears it down, Blissey handles it fairly well.
598.png
Nattorei - Usually just burn it and let it die. Celebi laughs at it's Leech Seed and Forretress is there to spin away hazards if necessary. Still a pain when paired with Burungeru.
233.png
Porygon2 - Toxic it. It'll die eventually. Blissey walls its offensive attempts.
227.png
Skarmory - Usually burn it, and then wall it to death. Forretress can spin away any hazards it lays.
245.png
Suicune - Dies to hazards fairly quickly. Rest variants are annoying though. CroCune is a pain even to Quagsire, since Boil Over has a burn chance.
260.png
Swampert - Celebi comes in and threatens it out most of the time, even though I don't have a STAB Grass Move to hit it with. Toxic Spikes and Entry Hazards in general wears it down during the course of the match.
73.png
Tentacruel - Quagsire can set up on it somewhat, or just 2HKO with Earthquake.
134.png
Vaporeon - Walled by Blissey. Most variants don't carry Heal Bell. Letting it Wish Pass successfully is a pain though.
178.png
Xatu - Is extremely annoying. Not only can it basically not be statused, but it's also pretty bulky too. I usually just PP Stall it to death.

The first thing I noticed was a serious fire weakness with only quagsire resisting it. Try switching Celebi with Heatran who is immune to fire attacks and also can set up SR. Blissey can be your cleric.

btw, you wrote:
472.png
Gliscor - Ice Beam from Quagsire 2HKO's. Not much else to say, other than that it's near impervious to entry hazards, which is annoying.

You dont have ice beam on your Quagsire so Gliscor is a big problem to your team.

Not too good with stall, but it's nice to see a stall team that isn't completely destroyed by the likes of Blaziken (the only poke you have you seems capable of handling him is Qaugsire though).

For terakion in the threats department, I noticed that you said Qaugsire could easily kill it off after close combat defense drops. Unaware quagsire ignores any stat drops from close combat. Small detail, but still.
