Media General Music Discussion Thread

Recently found this band and went through their 2 projects. Debut album and their self titled EP. Both projects are amazing and really scratch the part of myself who loves post-hardcore. Really recommend them for anyone else who li

Joanna Wang came back from a hiatus and put out what's probably going to be my Album of the Year,

If you told me that not one but TWO of my favorite musical acts that both start with a J and havent released an album since the 2010s would be dropping this year I wouldn't believe you, but here we are.

While I'm not big on their 3rd album, Japandroids' first two albums are two of my favorite albums ever, a constant barrage of youthful and anthemic power/indie pop jams with some noisy soundscapes to back them up. They finally are coming back this year for what they plan to be their final album :psycry:

I do like the song quite a bit. The picture painted by the lyrics is fun, and the vocals seem to still have some of the Springsteen/Heartland Rock influences that were all over their last album. This time, however, the soundscape is wayyy more dense and noisy, just like their first two albums (the approach here particularly sounds like their 2nd), which I obviously am a big fan of lol. Glad they're back for one last visit!!

(Btw if there's gonna be a third act in this weirdly specific group, i heard Japanese Breakfast has finished recording their next album)

this week in music has been a rollercoaster.

new kanye album was just as bad as i expected it to be and even redone protection wont be able to save how weak and uninspired it is everywhere.

parannoul on the other hand released what i think might be their single best record, absolutely magic just as ive come to expect from them. cant wait for it to hit streaming <3

It's kind of surreal to see Kanye unable to use his musical chops to bail himself out of a tanking reputation. The ride-or-dies are riding and dying, of course, but it seems like the mainstream is finally kicking him to the curb.

Not quite my jam, but the place I volunteer at has the radio set to a station that plays all the top-charting pop hits and this song plays at least once a day. If nothing else, its one of the better, if not, more interesting songs on the station and I'm fascinated by how explicitly lesbian the track is.

>Chappell Roan: "can you play a song with a fucking beat?"
>also Chappell Roan: *proceeds to play like 6 songs with literally zero beat*

Glad to see this stupid fucking trend isn't going anywhere soon lol

(I actually really liked this album but come the fuck on)

Also really dug the charli xcx album, you can consider me brat-pilled

Yooo, I make hip-hop music:

Here are my 2 most recent songs:

“One not the one - FEMI ISHOLA

“rah rah” - FEMI ISHOLA

lots of influence from Saba, Mick Jenkins, Smino, JID, J Cole & Chance, so if you’re a fan of any of those artists, definitely check me out!

Okay hooooooly shit as much as I love the new Joanna Wang album, my album of the year frontrunner is now looking to be from another Asian act I've been keeping an eye on for the past few years, Soumbalgwang's new album Fire and Light

Okay so Soumbalgwang is one of many bands I've been keeping an eye from the Korean indie scene. The most well-known acts from that area are Parannoul and Meaningful Stone (I'm honestly expecting Meaningful Stone's next album to also be an AOTY contender given her new Dream Pop/Noise Pop/Shoegaze direction). I personally am a huge fan of Slant (they are coming to the east coast next month go to a show near you!!!!!!!! If you live in boston and want to join me please vm me i don't wanna go alone aaaaa) and Dabda, both of whom released an album in the 2020s and both of them I'd consider to frontrunners for album of the decade. For me, Soumbalgwang sat in that tier right below all of these acts alongside bands like Adios Audio and Sailor Honeymoon, where they weren't quite up to the level of Slant and Dabda when it came to consistent songwriting, but their best songs and approach to sound made it clear that they were filled with potential that could be capitalized on.

In Soumbalgwang's case they were primarily doing post-hardcore with insane amounts of noise added onto it, but it gave their music a strange brightness. Like, their last album was honestly not too far off from being emo shoegaze music ala Parannoul while still being undeniably melodic post-hardcore. The album wasn't super consistent and the first track was absolutely the best one, but if they could keep the songwriting going, they definitely had the potential to be something special.

That is not what they did on this album at ALL.

Soumbalgwang is still the same incredibly noisy and enveloping band they always were. But this time, they are staying as far from dreaminess as they can and dive straight into gothic rock territory. This isn't necessarily a genre I'm a huge fan of, but damn, their spin on it really worked.

I honestly can't put my thoughts on this album coherently into words. This album is incredibly dark and yet...strangely awesome. It's not a horror movie so much as it is an intense thriller, it's not gonna scare you as much as it makes you go "OH SHIIIIIT!" The sounds they produce on this album, the fact that every song is able to stand out, it's just really remarkable. The first thing I wanted to do after hearing it in the car for the first time was play that shit AGAIN and it was still great. This album has just been sitting on my mind all day and I expect it to stay on my mind for a bit longer. And, well, that's just the sign of an incredible album to me.

I think the best way I can explain this album to the music nerds is that it gives the same feeling I imagine most people get from stuff like Daughter's albums, except this album is much more filled in sound and production making it a way more enjoyable and enthralling listen (also the members of Daughters are terrible people lol, and I don't think that's the case with Soumbalgwang).

There is still a lot of albums I need to go through, but now that Joanna Wang is thankfully on people's radars now, I am now moving to champion Fire and Light as the new "crazy underrated album from Asia I will shove down everyone's throats"

I stepped on a slug a month ago, I still haven't recovered from the guilt. it was so slimy and icky. I killed it and condemned it to slug hell. Denzel curry is a visionary. no misses on that mans discography.

I rewatched Solar Sand's video on Weird Titles.
It got me thinking, what are some good or interesting song titles that you have come across? (doesn't necessarily have to be weird)

For me, that would be Angel Echo by Silentroom. The definition of the term is an area that produces a ghost reading on radars. But my personal interpretation is that a god (or supernatural being) rips and tears the boundary of reality, that the digital static catches (hence the "Echo"). With both of these readings, and just being a sick title itself, it enhances the song for me.

i been following him since his raider klan days, love Denzel.

Funny side story I use to game with Slim Guerilla (a member of Raider Klan from Houston) on GTA V (getting the glitch cars lol) and he told me so much about all that ish back then Purrp was just going wild yeeting members out, including Denzel (really was just Denzel was always loyal)
My fav story was we tryna find a car and he's telling me he got into it with Gangsta Boo of Three 6 Mafia and even SpaceGhostPurrp told him apologize.
When he said that I was like "Bro you know Purrp personally but i dont even know him like that but if he said apologize, apologize cus he's never apologetic." lol.
He ran the PS3 crew for the group, how I met dude lol.

genuinely interested in what other pokemon nerds are listening to, especially not-as-mainstream artists—those are always interesting

To Kill a Living Book by mili
Yes yes, go on "video game music isn't real music" crowd. All i'm gonna say is it's the only mili album that's 100% good.
please pretend "poems of a machine" doesn't exist btw

regrettably my second favorite mili album is miracle milk because it has both Ga1ahad and Scientific Witchery (full song name btw) AND Painful Death for the Lactose Intolerant but it also has world.execute(me) and i fucking hate that song
