Introduction:

Hello Smogon! As my first post on the forums, I decided to post an RMT. After using Gengar on several other teams that reached the middle of the ladder (mid 1400's), I decided to build a team around it. Please help me fix this team up with your suggestions. Also, I'm not particularly great at team building, so forgive me if there are obvious holes on the team. Thanks!
  1. Based on type synergy, I decided that Bisharp was the best partner for Gengar. Gengar is immune to Fighting and Ground, while Bisharp resists Ghost and Dark, and is immune to Psychic.
  2. Most teams need a defogger/spinner, and this team is no exception. I chose Latias to help Gengar by getting rid of hazards; Gengar has a Life Orb and Substitute, so it needs all of the HP it can get. Latias was additionally chosen as it could use healing wish late game to revive Gengar. It is immune to Ground and Fire, which Bisharp is weak to.
  3. Keldeo was added as I needed a powerful scarfed mon. It helps beat Pokemon such as Landorus and Mega-Loppuny.
  4. Landorus was added as my rocks setter and as a physical wall. It essentially stops Talonflame from destroying my team.
  5. Venusaur is my mega, and it walls water Pokemon, besides Starmie.

The Team:

Gengar @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave
- Focus Blast

Gengar is the pokemon that I wanted to build my team around. The set I am most comfortable with is the Life Orb and Substitute attacker. It has Shadow Ball and Sludge Wave as powerful STAB moves that severely damage most mons not immune to them. Focus Blast deals good damage to Heatran, Ferrothorn, Tyranitar, and OHKOs opposing Bisharp (of course, I would need to be behind a sub). It runs max speed, special attack with a timid nature to speed tie non-HP Fire Lati twins.

bisharp.gif

Bisharp @ BlackGlasses
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 52 SpD / 204 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Knock Off
- Iron Head
- Sucker Punch
- Pursuit

Like previously stated, Bisharp has great type synergy with Gengar. It is mostly standard, as it runs its four most common moves. Bisharp is very important as a Pursuit trapper, as keeping Stealth Rocks up are crucial for my team. It takes care of Psychic types that hurt Gengar. Max Attack Adamant is used to ensure maximum damage.

latias.gif

Latias (F) @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 72 HP / 184 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Defog
- Healing Wish

In order to support Gengar, Latias is running defog to get rid of hazards, and healing wish to support other Pokemon I might need late-game. I am running max speed and timid in order to speed tie with opposing Latis and Gengars. STAB Draco dents most mons, and Psyshock helps me deal with Poison types. The EVs are standard, with 72 in HP to help Latias' bulk.

keldeo.gif

Keldeo @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Justified
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Secret Sword
- Hydro Pump
- Icy Wind

Scarfed Keldeo is very important to this team, as it deals with opposing Landorus and Landorus-T, among other fast sweepers. It outspeeds most Pokemon and deals with Mega-Loppuny. Scald and Secret Sword are the most spammable moves, and Icy Wind helps slow down opposing mons on obvious switches. Hydro Pump can be used late game if the extra power is necessary to take down a mon before it takes out Keldeo.

landorus-therian.gif

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 168 HP / 252 Def / 88 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- U-turn

Landorus-Therian is my usual lead, as it sets up Stealth Rocks and has a slow U-Turn to gain switch initiative. Stone Edge is for Talonflame, and STAB EQ hits hard, even though Lando-T has no investment. Impish nature is used to add to physical bulk. Additionally, if the opposing team has a Talonflame, Landorus-T must be kept healthy to deal with it. Latias can Healing Wish up Landorus-T if necessary. Although unusual, the 88 Speed EVs give Landorus-T a Speed of 240, which outspeeds the 239 HP Fire Specs Magnezone, Defensive Jirachi, and Adamant Bisharp.

venusaur-mega.gif

Venusaur @ Venusaurite
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Synthesis
- Leech Seed

In my last spot, I decided to go with Mega-Venusaur. Giga Drain, Sythesis, and Leech Seed help it to beat out other bulky mons, and Sludge Bomb hits Fairy types. Venusaurs' most important role is to stop powerful Water types, such as Azumarill and Keldeo. The 16 Speed EVs cause it to outspeed Adamant Azumarill, and the rest are used to add to bulk.

Thanks once again for any comments and suggestions!

My Thoughts:
  1. Despite Landorus-T, my team seem to be very weak to Talonflame.
  2. I feel that it might need a mon with a status move like Toxic or Will-O-Wisp for passive damage.
  3. Hydro Pump on Keldeo doesn't seem to be used very often. Does Keldeo learn any other moves that are viable (HP Bug for Celebi?)?

Hey man welcome to smogon and cool team! I think I know a few things that can solve all of the problems you are experiencing! First I think a small change of bisharps ev's to this spread 72hp/252+atk/184spd would be more optimal. This spread speed creeps creeping rotom's by one point and the standard rotom spread by 3 points while maintaining the power of maxed out offense along with some bonus bulk to help take those dracos from the latis. The next option I would suggest is heatran>lando-t. Mvenu walls a majority of the tier anyways and heatran makes perfect synergy between them and latias creating the infamous venutran+lati core. Tran still provides you with stealth rock and it also provides some nice utility with toxic which you said would be nice for the team to have. Also heatran helps alleviate your talonflame weakness as it is a nice answer to the smogon bird.

Again welcome to smogon and that is a pretty solid team you have nice work:] Hope my suggestions help you out!

you're annoyingly weak to fast flying and psychics like mega alakazam and tornadus-t. big bird specifically shits on the majority of your team. i personally think the quickest fix would be to combine bisharp and gengar into something like a weavile, and then trying out a sturdy steel like heatran to deal with lati@s, alakazam, talonflame and some fairies. bisharp can work over heatran, and it's always nice to have a couple priority options. mess around with heatran if you want more of a rounded balance, try AV bisharp if you're looking for offense.

-Low Kick / Pursuit

Hi,

this is a rather solid Bulky Offense Team, both synergy-wise and structurally, as you have a solid offensiv core in Bisharp + Gengar, a useful pivot in Landorus and a powerful glue in Mega-Venusaur. All these Pokemon are solid and complement each other well, but I can see the team struggle as a whole due to not having many options against defensively orientated teams. Not every offensive team needs a set-up sweeper or wallbreaker, but a solid win-condition, or whatever you want to call it, makes playing against Stall or Fat Balance (think Gliscor / Slowbro / Clefable cores) a lot easier.

The first thing that would come to my mind is SubCM Keldeo, which does lots of work against most Balanced Teams once Latis are pursuit trapped and water resists like Slowbro are status'd or worn down. Unfortunately, you would lose some important speed control, i.e. the ability to revenge kill Mega-Lopunny and others. Besides, Talonflame is a huge pain as you said, since Landorus is worn down (especially if Talonflame has WoW).

Manaphy seems like a good fit here, being able to break defensive teams as well as live attacks from the likes of Excadrill, Landorus or Talonflame and KO them back. You lose a lot of speed though, which leads me to my next suggestion: Choice Scarf Jirachi. As Latias, Jirachi can bring back a pokemon with Healing Wish and pivot into attackers like Lati@s itself, Metagross, Tornadus and a bunch of others. You aren't too weak to Stealth Rocks, and Defog would only remove your own hazards while your hazard setter is worn down anyway. Besides, you still have a more than solid water resist in Venusaur and a potential resist in Manaphy.

As these changes are shifting the team more towards Offense, I would recommend going with Offensive Mega-Venusaur here, which does not allow as many switch-ins but beats Azumarill and Keldeo nevertheless. You also have Hidden Power Fire to hit Mega-Scizor and Bisharp, both of which are usually dangerous to these kind of offensive teams. Finally, Bisharp does not really need to have Pursuit without a pokemon benefiting from it. Low Kick seems like a solid and underrated fit, since you lost an important check to Bisharp and Weavile in Keldeo.
