Nasty Plot makes Gengar a dangerous wallbreaker. Shadow Ball and Focus Blast provide perfect coverage, which makes Gengar's fourth slot a bit more flexible. Shadow Ball is Gengar's main STAB to use consistently while Focus Blast pushes through Pokemon that are able to take Shadow Ball such as Tyranitar and Bisharp. Substitute is great for Gengar to protect itself from Thunder Wave from Rotom-W and can be useful against Sucker Punch Bisharp. Sludge Wave is Gengar's secondary STAB that can be useful when Gengar Gigantamaxes. Thanks to Gigantamax, Sludge Wave gives a +1 Special Attack boost, which can make Gengar raise its Special Attack without relying heavily on Nasty Plot. Speaking of Gigantamax, two of its other perks with Gengar is the 100% accuracy from using Focus Blast as a Max move (albeit with a slight damage decrease) and G-Max Terror, which not only does a significant amount of damage, but also traps the opponent. G-Max Terror is great against Pokemon such as Toxapex because it prevents it from escaping to recover some of its health. Furthermore, G-Max Terror 2HKOes physically defensive Toxapex.

Black Sludge provides consistent health for Gengar and can be great to have passive recovery during Gigantamaxing. Kasib Berry allows Gengar to absorb an attack from Choice Scarf Ditto. Without any boosts Gengar can survive Shadow Ball from Ditto. During Gigantamax, Gengar should be able to withstand a boosted Shadow Ball from Ditto as well. Gengar doesn't necessarily need a lot of team support, but it appreciates entry hazards from Pokemon such as Ferrothorn, Seismitoad, and Clefable. Gengar is prone to faster threats such as these Pokemon, so having a Choice Scarf Pokemon ready such as said Galarian Darmanitan, Rotom-W, and Ditto can be a huge boon. Galarian Darmanitan and Rotom-W have U-turn and Volt Switch, respectively, which helps Gengar get into the field easier since its otherwise fairly frail and lacks significant resistances.

Absence of Pursuit and access to Gigantamax makes a powerful combination for a Choice Specs set. Shadow Ball is the primary attack Gengar should use most of the time, with Focus Blast catching anything that resists Shadow Ball. Sludge Wave is only useful on a few targets, but it helps against Mandibuzz and is a stronger option than Shadow Ball. Notable KOes that Sludge Wave gets that Shadow Ball does not includes, after Stealth Rock, Dracovish and Conkeldurr. Trick lets Gengar cripple defensive threats such as Toxapex and Mandibuzz, though Gigantamax can ease some of the burden of being locked onto an attack too. While Gengar loses its boost from Choice Specs, being able to freely select between its moves and using G-Max Terror to finish off crippled walls such as Mandibuzz and Toxapex are greatly appreciated. Choice Scarf is a viable option for Gengar to make it a bit more of a revenge killer while also being difficult for defensive threats to handle thanks to Trick and Gigantamax; however, Choice Specs' raw power is preferred most of the time.

Entry hazards from Ferrothorn, Seismitoad, and Clefable are great for this set to help secure 2HKOes and OHKOes with Gengar's STABs. U-turn and Volt Switch support from Rotom-W, Galarian Darmanitan, and Corviknight are great to have. Speed control from Choice Scarf Rotom-W, Galarian Darmanitan, and Ditto are great to have when using Choice Specs. If Gengar is using Choice Scarf breakers such as Dracovish and Choice Band Galarian Darmanitan are great to have.
