Getting a cavity

Banned deucer.
In two days I'm going to get two cavities. They look pretty small, but Ive never gotten one before. Can someone tell me exactly what they do and how much it hurts?

The thing I'm worried about most is the shot in the gums

You mean fillings?

But yeah the shots in your mouth hurt like hell and I had to get like 9 of them in my gums and the roof of my mouth for getting 4 teeth extracted

You are going to get a big needle inserted into your gums that will numb the area, and it will taste extremely disgusting. it will not hurt if you take a big breath and think about something else. Blank your mind if you can.

After that, they will use a drill that vibrates your skull to drill the cavity out.

After blasting the hole with water and sucking it dry, they will put the filling on the tip of a metal scraper and shove it in the hole.

And you're done after that.

MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO IS SPACE OUT AND NOT PAY ATTENTION TO WHATS GOING ON. YOU HAVE TO DO THIS OR ELSE WORSE THINGS WILL HAPPEN LATER.

Just had a couple done these past weeks. It's not bad at all. The dentist will first use a localized anesthetic on your gums, then give you a shot there to numb the rest of your mouth (if it helps, you can close your eyes while he/she does this). The worst part after that is just the smell.

Im not really worried about the drilling, and the filling, andthe smell and stuff. My main fear is just the needle, which is funny because it actually is supposed to make the expieriece better.

I hope I can get laughing gas so I dont feel and remember the needle

the shots aren't that bad, i had some cognitive whiney bullshitness when i got my teeth filled, twelve teeth pulled when i was a young'n but they really do not hurt, i think the most unpleasant thing is just the noises, but that's just me.
but really honestly, the shots don't hurt, don't work yourself up over it.
if you're at an oral surgeon place where they practice relaxation dentistry, nitrous oxide is a pretty good time but otherwise it's not so bad.
i agree the smell is the worst part. close your eyes.
i remember thinking how the shots were going to be so awful, this silly girl with piercings all in her face shedding tears before they shot my guns, the nurse held my hand, but you really can't feel it, and then i laughed uncomfortably with an open mouth when the shots were over, eyes wide while i watched the dust and shrapnel of my teeth fly into the air.
but seriously if it feels a little uncomfortable don't be afraid to tell them. i sat through this longass procedure feeling more than moderately uncomfortable while he tinkered away in my mouth and FINALLY said something, it wasn't even a big deal to administer some more anesthetic and then the procedure was smooooooth sailing through calm seas. when they shoot the top of your jaw your whole face goes numb, utter silliness.
really it's routine and it's not painful at all, the worst part is the sensations post-filling when you have to grow accustomed to mercury amalgam in your mouth. but it's not bad. little kids get this done, you'll be fine. it really *doesn't* hurt, it's just weird and slightly unpleasant, but what invasive procedure is not?
two is gonna be a cakewalk, lots of people get wayyyy more in one sitting. you'll do great. ;]

Don't even go there. I had to get a good amount of the gum near the back of my mouth vaporized with a high-powered laser because a molar had pushed the gum up with it when it came in and it was staying that way. That comes in second place for worst dental procedure in my experiences.

Post 800 ahhh

This reminds me.. I brush my teeth every day but haven't gone to the dentist in over a year and a half? Is this bad?

Yeah.

It's gonna be a bit! ticklish at times. But i don't think pain is gonna be around much...

In the end, it's gonna all worth it. Enjoy sticking your tongue between your teeth, that's the best part about it...

I haven't gone to the dentist in... 7 years. No cavities, or need for braces or retainer, other than a slight overbite, that's pretty much invisible.

Thanks, I knew dentists are useless.. unless if you need some sort of "damnthatsux" teeth operation.. I guess. :P

Possibly. A dentist can spot cavities before you notice. Once a cavity starts hurting then it's already quite advances. Of course regular brushing makes you less likely to get cavities, but your diet is a factor too - eat a lot of sweets and chocolates, or drink a lot of fizzy drinks (even diet and especially cola), and you're at higher risk of tooth decay.

adding to above post*

Do you have the tools to remove plaque buildup that a dentist would?

Realistically no, but I spend on average 5 minutes each session brushing my teeth. At night, I make sure to scrub each teeth for plague and floss.

And I don't have a sweet tooth at all =/ I detest chocolate, unless it's low on sugar, and candy doesn't appeal to me. Although I'll admit that one of my weaknesses is sweet bread like Castella.

Again, I know it's not enough, but it's been 7 years, and my family was poor, and we couldn't really afford to go to the dentist. Now that I'm in university, and I have dental insurance through it, I'll probably make a trip either this month or next.

Check to see if your uni has a dental degree.

I can get my teeth cleaned like my dentist did for $5,
and the professor that is over the student checks to see if everything's perfect.

Doesn't hurt at all. Quick, tiny pinch for the shot and then everything's fine. Just relax because the simple fact is, there is nothing to worry about.

I will be going this route when I get my wisdom teeth pulled. I don't know if it'll be as much of a value as Mike's teeth cleaning, but it should be certainly less than the $1200+ the "recommended" place wants to charge me for all 4.

The needle is all that you feel. Just close your eyes and you'll be fine. It's just like a regular dentist visit, just that afterwards you can bite your cheek really fucking hard and won't feel a thing.

I'm getting my wisdom teeth out next Wednesday. Looking forward to that...
