Giratina origin forme (discussion thread)

Well, the origin forme is out, and I'm curious on how well it will do in the uber metagame.

giratina_origin.png

HP:150
Attack:120
Defense:100
Sp. Atk:120
Sp. Def:100
Speed: 90

Ability:Levitate

The platinum orb boosts Giratina's ghost and dragon moves by probably 20%, like Dialga's adamant orb and Palkia's lustrous orb.

According to another thread, Giratina also now gets the move outrage and spite.

A couple movesets I've been thinking off

Giratina @ platinum orb
Levitate/Modest
252 HP, 252 Sp.Atk, 32 speed
Calm Mind
Dragon Pulse
Sleep Talk
Rest/WoW

This is essentially the old CM Giratina which just got better. It now has a better sp. atk to work with, and can still do well in the game.

Pros

-Boosted Sp. Atk stat, plus with CM makes this a powerful sweeper

-It has access to rest

Cons

- Its slow

- Its easily counterable by faster physical sweepers like Rayquaza.

- It's not as bulky as the old CM'er.

Giratina @ platinum orb (duh)
Levitate/Adamant
252 HP, 220 Attack, 32 Speed
Outrage
Shadow Force
Rest
Sleep Talk (?)

This is very questionable. I don't know what happens if you use shadow force or outrage through sleep talk. Someone help me on this. If I'm thinking correctly, this can be an extremely deadly set. Shadow force is a nice attack (make sure blissey is gone though), as it hits virtually anything super effective, and possibly works like protect on slow pokemon. However, what I don't like about it, is that it gives your opponent time to switch into something, or maybe use a boosting move. Outrage also is nice, to hit dragons super effective. Again, I don't know what happens if outrage continues or not when you use sleep talk, or if shadow force continues while you sleep.

Pros:
-If played correctly, this team will cause major problems for your opponent.

-Origin forme's boosted attack allows a STABed, Platinum Orbed, Ghost type, base 120 attack shadow force to hurt anything in the game (besides blissey)

-If I'm thinking right, it is THE sleep absorber, with Shadow Force and Outrage getting past sleep talk's random moveness.

Cons:
-It's slow

-With a weakened defense, and sp. defense, it isnt much trouble for faster dragons like Palkia to break through.

-It's not too hard to counter

-It's attack stats aren't exactly the highest either, and it lacks dragon dance.

So what do you guys think? Personally, I think it's a mixed bag for Giratina. It's has a nice movepool, and shadow force is now usable due to the higher attack. But still, it's offensive stats are still kinda average, its still slow, and dragon isn't the most stellar typing due to the fact that other dragons and ice moves are virtually everywhere. Outrage does sound good on this though, as it won't die nearly as easily as Rayquaza, so that's a plus. However, I don't think it gets dragon dance, and it is forced to use platinum orb.

I'd run a Choice Scarf set with this thing. With the boosted Attack stats, I think it could work reasonably well. Those STABs hit a lot for SE damage.

Something like:
Giratina@Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 236 Atk/ 20 SAtk/ 252 Spd
Hasty Nature (+Spd, -Def)
- Outrage
- Draco Meteor
- Shadow Claw
- Earthquake

Also, I don't think Shadow Force will work through Sleep Talk, since its a two turn move. it'll just charge, but never acctually use the move, like Solar Beam would.

Yeah that's right Sunday. I'm not sure about Shadow Force though. I don't think it works though. It's a 2 turn attack like SolarBeam.

I think it needs its item to stay in Origin forme, so Choice Scarf wouldn't work.

I'd personally run a mixed attacker set, like Palkia. Draco Meteor/Outrage/Shadow Ball/Aura Sphere. It's kind of inferior to Rayquaza, but it gets Ghost STAB, lack of a Stealth Rock weakness, and good defenses (which are slightly undermined by bad defensive typing for ubers).

Although a Calm Minder does seem to be pretty powerful. I'd run 3-attack Calm Minder with Aura Sphere/Shadow Ball/Dragon Pulse.

Hmmm, I'd hit it. ;P

Anyway the scarf set seems nice, but the cm set umbarsc mentioned sounds amazing. I think he will be uber, in both forms.

I'd say that Giratina's going to function the same way it has when it was in its' normal form except this time it has a different stat spread that allows it to hit harder. Also some other changes is that it will have different movesets but, other than that it's all Giratina can really do. This is just my opinion on Giratina Origin Form, I don't really play ubers all that much if at all:(

Just a note - Sleep Talk cannot pick Shadow Force. On your second set, while you're using Sleep Talk, you're either going to pick Rest or Outrage. To get that coverage while sleeping, you're going to have to use Shadow Claw.

If a Pokemon is asleep at the end of the turn Outrage is used, then the user is not locked in (and thus is never confused).

Also, I don't think Shadow Force will work through Sleep Talk, since its a two turn move. it'll just charge, but never acctually use the move, like Solar Beam would.

SolarBeam will never be selected by Sleep Talk (even in the sun). The same is true for Shadow Force.

Giratina @ Platinum Orb
Modest Nature (+Sp. Atk, -Atk)
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Sp. Atk / 4 Spd
- Draco Meteor
- Shadow Ball
- Thunder
- Overheat

Special Attacking set. Maybe.

I have a feeling giratina's origin forme is going to be another underhyped pokemon kind of like how heatran was at the beginning of DP. it will probably take a while to see it's full potential.

Honestly it seems the only thing this does better than Rayquaza is lol at Groudon.

As for me, This will be the newest Giratina:

Giaratina (Another Form) @ Leftovers
~Protect
~Substitute
~Spite
~Mud Slap

It has no weak >_>

Wait, is it actually confirmed we need to have it hold the Plat Orb to get it to stay in the Origin forme outside of the torn world? iirc in the Dialga vs Giratina video, Giratina isn't holding anything

How do we even know if Giratina even gets the Platinum Orb? From my mind, I think the OP is just assuming from Diamond and Pearl experiences rather than actually admitting if it's true or not.

If it does actually need the orb (which I believe has been confirmed), then I really can't see why you'd use this at all. Maybe for a mixed set, but its another form can at least choose its item. Hell throw a CB on another form and you have a giratina thats more powerful and bulkier lol

It has been confirmed. It was on pokebeach I think. You get the platinum orb in turnback cave post e4, before that orgin giratina is unavailable. It has to be holding the platinum orb.

It has to be holding the platinum orb.
Well that's disappointing. Really is. :(

Hmm...while I think about it, Origin Giratina might still make it to my team simply because of Levitate.

I'm opening this thread because this Pokemon is really discussion worthy and I wanna see people try and make it so that it's not inferior Giratina-A. It's complete moveset is yet to be discovered, but it doesn't hurt to start thinking

I'm in the process of thinking of several sets as of now, but what I have are these

Giratina @ Platinum Orb
EVs: 252 Atk / 32 Spd / 224 SAtk
Naughty Nature (+Atk, -SDef)
- Dragon Claw
- Thunder
- Earthquake
- Shadow Ball
Mixed set, DClaw 2HKOes Bliss assuming Platinum Orb gives a 20% boost, Thunder for Kyogres who otherwise -can- wall you, Earthquake for Dialga/Jirachi and Shadow Ball gives you the ever elusive Deoxys-D/Mewtwo coverage and makes it not an inferior Dialga. Draco Meteor/Outrage can go somewhere

Giratina @ Platinum Orb
EVs: 208 Def / 50 Spd / 252 SAtk
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Calm Mind
- Dragon Pulse
- Rest
- Sleep Talk / Roar
A more offensive version of your normal Giratina. Dragon Pulse 2HKOes Groudon without any boosts while Groudon is stuck trying to 3HKO you back with Dragon Claw. The extra special attack allows Giratina to penetrate Latias' Special Defense and 2HKOes Blissey after 6 Calm Minds. Even with reduced defenses and no Leftovers, do not underestimate its ability to switch into things. Giratina is bulky enough to survive 3 CB Megahorns from Heracross.

Watch out for Metagross and Tyranitar, as they can take your Dragon Pulses and KO back with Meteor Mash/Crunch (Payback), or punish your switch with Pursuit. There is, however, a chance that you might beat Metagross because CBed Meteor Mash isn't a guaranteed 2HKO and it might miss.

Of course, if you can't use this over WiFi/link battles...then ugh

Doesn't it get Aura Sphere, like Giratina-A?

For the Calm Minder, three attacks is what I'd use. Shadow Ball / Aura Sphere / Dragon Pulse has too much coverage to give up, and for a RestTalking Calm Minder I'd prefer Giratina-A for the extra bulk.
