Golbat

Best Sprite EVER

[Overview]

  • Pretty good stats for an NFE Pokemon, with passable Attack, good Speed, and defenses which are more than acceptable with Eviolite.
  • Typing is a mixed blessing, giving common weaknesses, including to SR, but affording immunity to the otherwise crippling Toxic and some neat 4x resistances.
  • Good movepool, including reliable recovery, taunt, haze, and the rare super fang.
  • Struggles with Steels and Psychics, the latter of which are highly common in NU.

[SET]
name: Defensive
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Roost
move 3: Taunt
move 4: Super Fang / Toxic
item: Eviolite
ability: Inner Focus
nature: Impish
evs: 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

  • Extremely bulky
  • Fast for a wall, giving it stallbreaking ability.
  • Typing doesn't do it too many favours in NU; being weak to Psychic, Rock, Electric and Ice-type moves is not good, as these are all common attacking types. All but Psychic can be negated by roost though. 4x resistances (Fighting, Bug, Grass) are helpful though, as is immunity to Poison.
  • Brave Bird is a powerful enough move to hurt even when coming off an average base 80 Attack
  • Roost gives Golbat reliable recovery and the invaluable ability to change its typing
  • Super Fang is a more unusual move, a move that no Pokemon likes to switch into near the beginning of the match.
  • Toxic again helps to break through walls.
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

  • U-Turn leaves a dent in Psychic types switching in, wearing them down while maintaining momentum.
  • Haze and Whirlwind allow Golbat to neutralise opposing stat boosters, but losing one of its other moves will decrease its ability to take down opponents.
  • Spread: 80 Special Defense evs will ensure that Golbat takes less than 50 % from Slowking's uninvested Psychic (and stall it out with Toxic, for instance), and that it cannot be OHKOed by Mesprit after SR.
  • More Special Defense is more than viable.
  • Speed investment: you could even go as far as max Speed, imitating the role of Crobat in higher tiers.
  • Teammates: Golbat benefits from spin support; Torkoal, Wartotle, and Cryogonal all share a weakness with Golbat, but otherwise have reasonable synergy.
  • Toxic Spikes alleviates the need for toxic, but stacking psychic weaknesses is ill-advised.
  • Steel-types such as Klinklang and Magneton possess good defensive synergy with Golbat. Magneton helps remove steels which wall Golbat, while Klinklang can sweep a weakened team.
[Other Options]

  • Nasty Plot set. Many setup opportunities but weak, relying on the weak Air Slash and Hidden Power for coverage.
  • Infiltrator bypasses screens; helpful for nasty plot, but sadly illegal with Super Fang.
  • A set more like those Crobat runs, with max Speed investment, and perhaps even heavy Attack investment.
  • Choice Band set utilising Brave Bird, U-Turn, Cross Poison, Pursuit. Probably outclassed by Braviary.
[Checks and Counters]

  • Good ones are surprisingly few, as nothing likes switching into Super Fang
  • Magneton is the best counter, followed by Klinklang and any other steel-types.
  • Rotom-A is a decent counter, as it resists Brave Bird and has electric STAB.
  • Psychic types such as Gardevoir can hit it hard with their STAB moves.
  • Hail/Blizzspam

I would remove the Toxic slash over Taunt. Golbat really needs Taunt to perform its job efficiently. Move Taunt to the third spot and Super Fang to the fourth, with Toxic only slashed after Super Fang.

OK it's in counters now. Originally it wasn't there because simply carrying a super effective attack is not enough to push the rare hail pokemon into the counters section. However, that hail depletes Golbat's health may make it worth a mention.
