Ubers Gothorita

[OVERVIEW]

* Gothorita is one of the unique picks in Ubers due to its ability to remove and neutralize passive and problematic Pokemon with Shadow Tag.
* Though Gothorita is an alternative Shadow Tag trapper that performs the same role as Gothitelle, it has superior bulk with Eviolite. This gives Gothorita the ability to trap more powerful foes that Gothitelle cannot.
* Some Pokemon like Choice Scarf Xerneas and, if running Defense investment, defensive Ho-Oh are vulnerable to Gothorita. Gothorita will therefore have more usefulness against some balanced and offensive teams, unlike Gothitelle, which tends to rely on the number of a slower and weaker Pokemon present on the other team to be effective.
* As a Pokemon that aims to switch into and neutralize passive foes, Gothorita may seem like a superior performer of this role due to its better marginal bulk. However, the process of neutralizing a Pokemon takes long enough for Gothitelle's Leftovers to outweigh the helpfulness of the additional bulk that Gothorita gains from Eviolite.
* Gothorita's lack of Leftovers also demands players to be more cautious when bringing it into the field, as switching into the field with entry hazards at a wrong time makes taking advantage of its higher bulk more difficult. The lack of Leftovers also makes the matchup against Pokemon like Ferrothorn, Celesteela, and Mega Venusaur more difficult, as Gothitelle can mitigate the damage at the end of each turn with Leftovers, while Gothorita will take more sizable damage from Leech Seed each turn and thus spend more time and PP to successfully neutralize them.
* Better bulk doesn't help too much with Gothorita's tendency to rely on matchups to be effective; Gothorita is still a risky Pokemon to employ due to its helplessness against most offensive teams.

Moves
========

* Charm and Confide are used to neutralize Pokemon that will struggle to KO Gothorita with reduced damage output.
* While Gothorita can easily overcome status with Rest, Taunt is still used to force attacks from trapped foes and make their attacking moves' PP diminish more quickly. Taunt also comes in handy for Gothorita in an event where it traps a Pokemon that it can temporarily shut down but struggles to outlast in the long run, such as Ferrothorn, which will struggle to punish a switch-in once Gothorita cripples it with Taunt and switches out.
* Rest is used to give Gothorita a way to overcome repeated attacks from trapped foes and status ailments.
* Though it is difficult to fit, Heal Bell is worth considering to let Gothorita support its teammates even more and be more useful in an unfavorable matchup.

Set Details
========

* Maximum investment in HP and Special Defense with a Sassy nature improves Gothorita's ability to take special attacks from Arceus formes and notably enables it to switch into Choice Scarf Xerneas and neutralize it. Minimum Speed is used to take minimal damage from Ferrothorn's Gyro Ball, and this is hardly detrimental, as Gothorita is slower than Celesteela anyway.
* An alternative EV spread of 252 HP / 112 Def / 144 SpD can be used to enable Gothorita to trap defensive Ho-Oh while still avoiding the 3HKO from support Arceus formes after Stealth Rock.

Usage Tips
========

* In order to neutralize foes, switch Gothorita into weaker attacks like support Arceus formes' Judgment and any attack from defensive Ho-Oh and repeatedly use Charm or Confide, Taunt, and Rest to deplete the PP of all attacking moves from the victim. Trapped foes will eventually run out of their attacks' PP and will start to use Struggle until they faint, which can be completely taken advantage of by Gothorita's teammates.
* As Gothorita will rely on PP stalling to neutralize a foe that it traps, make the best use of moves like Rest, which can potentially buy 48 turns, and Confide, which has just enough PP to stall out Calm Mind from Arceus formes.
* Though Gothorita's bulk is superior to Gothitelle's, it will sometimes have to be more cautious about directly switching into attacks. An opponent may make double switches if they want their defensive Pokemon away from a hazardous situation, and entry hazards are going to punish Gothorita with every misprediction. Also, losing momentum can result in varying consequences.
* This becomes less of a concern against slower teams, however, as many Pokemon that Gothorita can't necessarily trap cannot pose an immediate threat on Gothorita's switch. Slower teams also have many Pokemon that reliably switch into threats that they can reliably check, so this improves the odds for Gothorita to successfully trap problematic foes.
* Against other teams, Gothorita can switch into support Arceus formes and potentially Choice Scarf Xerneas and defensive Ho-Oh as well. Being able to trap the latter two depending on EV investment can be particularly useful; Xerneas will refrain from using valuable utility moves like Aromatherapy and Defog, and Ho-Oh will think twice before attempting to spread Toxic or use Defog.
* It may be tempting to make a quick move to eliminate passive foes for Gothorita's teammates, but patience will be an important factor for successfully using Gothorita. Depending on the rest of its team, Choice Scarf Yveltal locked into Oblivion Wing or defensive Necrozma-DM lacking Solganium Z or Swords Dance may have to be removed first. Scouting early-game will also generate an opportunity to observe how an opponent behaves against Gothorita paranoid opponents can be pressured into making predictions with Pursuit trappers like Tyranitar and Alolan Muk at a certain point, while a reckless opponent is more likely to be punished and lose one of their important Pokemon after a single misplay.
* Have extra caution against Pokemon with Leech Seed. While Gothitelle will lose 1/16 of its health every turn because of Leftovers, Gothorita will lose 1/8 of its health every turn, making it less effective when PP stalling against Leech Seed users. Celesteela does sizable damage with Heavy Slam before Gothorita's Charm, and Ferrothorn beats Gothorita one-on-one with Bullet Seed and uses a lot of Gothorita's PP even if using another attack.
* Most other Pokemon that Gothorita traps are easily neutralized by Charm and Confide. However, remember the amount of damage that Gothorita takes from the first blow, and if the next attack is going to weaken Gothorita enough to be taken out by a critical hit, use Rest. Although this may seem like an inefficient use of PP for a Pokemon that attempts to PP stall foes, Gothorita will likely outlast them anyway, and making passive foes run out of attacking moves is enough for its teammates to fully take advantage of them. As an example, Substitute users like Zygarde will have no fear against Taunted Arceus formes with no attacking moves left.

Team Options
========

* Though Gothorita's usefulness is dependent on the opposing team, it can often trap and cripple at least one foe in many matchups. Support Arceus formes are seen on most teams due to their ability to blanket check a lot of Pokemon in the tier, so sweepers like Rock Polish Primal Groudon, Zygarde-C, and Mega Salamence can be considered. The synergy with Zygarde is going to be stronger if Zygarde has Thousand Waves, allowing Gothorita to immediately create a favorable matchup against a trapped switch-in.
* Removing support Arceus formes can also benefit teammates like defensive Necrozma-DM, Ferrothorn, and an Arceus forme using Stealth Rock.
* Teammates that can put in work against offensive teams can be helpful, as Gothorita will not likely have any foe it can reliably trap. Priority move users like Marshadow and Choice Scarf users like Xerneas and Yveltal can patch up this weakness, and Gothorita can trap many of their checks. Choice Scarf Yveltal is noteworthy for bringing in Gothorita safely with U-turn.
* Consider employing an Arceus forme that will have some defensive presence. Using Gothorita can be hazardous otherwise due to the almost nonexistent defensive presence it has against any foe it cannot trap. Depending on the type, a support Arceus forme can be used to blanket check physical attackers or Dark- and Ghost-types. Any reasonable Arceus forme will appreciate Gothorita switching into Toxic and likely trapping the user, and they can be further supported if Gothorita has Heal Bell. If they are using Defog, they can swiftly remove entry hazards from Pokemon like Ferrothorn and opposing Arceus formes that may have set up while dealing with Gothorita.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Gothorita has little to no viable other options to utilize, as it is too slow, frail, and weak to justify any other set.
* Toxic may seem attractive due to it more quickly removing trapped Pokemon, but this hinders Gothorita's trapping capability by forcing it to forgo one of its other moves. Using Toxic also removes Gothorita's ability to at worst hinder Steel-types like defensive Necrozma-DM and Ferrothorn lacking Bullet Seed.
* Trick Room can be set for Gothorita's team after trapping an appropriate foe, but more reliable Trick Room users are available and Gothorita lacks the ability to generate momentum and directly threaten a foe.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Offensive Powerhouses**: Gothorita's low Speed, lackluster defensive typing, and mediocre bulk make it vulnerable to most foes that are offensively oriented. Very common examples like Primal Groudon, Yveltal, and Primal Kyogre can double switch into Gothorita and easily force it out.

**Shed Shell**: Some passive Pokemon like Blissey, Toxapex, and Skarmory are aware of Gothorita's existence in the tier, and they hold Shed Shell to prevent them from getting trapped. Gothorita typically lacks a way to redeem its reduced usefulness in these matchups.

**Ghost-types**: Ghost-types like Mega Gengar, Marshadow, and Giratina-O cannot be trapped by Shadow Tag, and they can threaten Gothorita with their super effective STAB attacks.

**Dark-types**: Yveltal, Arceus-Dark, and Choice Band Tyranitar can overpower Gothorita with their super effective attacks. However, it is important to note that Gothorita can trap support variants of Tyranitar with correct prediction.

**Pivoting Moves and Phazing Moves**: Magearna and defensive Zygarde-C have little concern against Gothorita due to their access to Volt Switch and Dragon Tail, respectively, which forces Gothorita to exit the field.

**Residual Damage**: Due to the lack of Leftovers, Gothorita is more vulnerable to entry hazards than Gothitelle, making it think twice before switching into the field to trap a passive foe. This also makes the matchup against Ferrothorn and Celesteela a lot less reliable, as they can use Leech Seed on Gothorita when it is asleep and continue to prevail.

I understand this is a WIP but I'm probably one of the few who has extensively considered this Pokemon throughout the generation so I will give you some pointers for the analysis.

Fundamentally if you're going full spdef, Heal bell is really worth noting in moves, especially when you consider Gothorita team options i.e ur cm arc fairy etc checks to marshadow etc. status relievers are quite crucial in Ubers.

If youre going for defense investment to trap Ho-Oh and other physicals etc the spread you wanna suggest is the following:

EVs: 252 HP / 112 Def / 144 SpD with a Calm Nature

You lose out on the Xerneas trapping obviously, but ho-oh trap defensive, dusk etc still, better vs ferro and celesteela and avoid the 3hko from support arceus judgment after rocks with the sequence of a confide so you rest safely and laugh at its demise.

I know this is really spotty, but I hope it helps.

* Staying healthy becomes more challenging against offensive teams, and better bulk doesn't help too much with Gothorita's tendency to rely on matchups to be effective.
I would argue its pretty much useless vs Offense.

usage tips are a bit more advanced than the usual which is ok but the very basics arent covered to begin with - switch into a foe and use the appropriate move to reduce their damage while staying alive with rest. then, either let them struggle to death or use the free turn with another mon. dont lose sight of the essentials, its not like goths are something everyone will know about, especially new and/or ladder players.

or and ("teammates" is plural) an Arceus forme using Stealth Rock.
* Teammates that can put in work against offensive teams can be helpful, as Gothorita will not likely have any foe it can reliably trap. Priority move users like Marshadow
or and Choice Scarf users like Xerneas and Yveltal can patch up this weakness,(AC) and Gothorita can trap many of their checks are trappable by Gothorita. Choice Scarf Yveltal is noteworthy for bringing in Gothorita safely with U-turn.
* Consider employing an Arceus forme that will have some defensive presence. Using Gothorita can be hazardous otherwise due to its little to no defensive presence it has against any foe it cannot trap. Depending on the type,
a support Arceus forme can be used to blanket check physical attackers or Dark- and Ghost-types. Any reasonable Arceus forme will appreciate Gothorita switching into Toxic and likely trapping the user, and they can be further supported if Gothorita has Heal Bell. If they are using Defog, they can swiftly remove entry hazards from Pokemon like Ferrothorn and opposing Arceus formes that may have set up while dealing with (keep this. The original writing, at least how I see it, was that Arceus formes can remove hazards that Ferrothorn etc. set up while they are being trapped by Gothorita) and bring in Gothorita to deal with them.

Other Options
=============

* Trick Room can be set for Gothorita's team after trapping an appropriate foe, but more reliable Trick Room users are available and Gothorita lacks the ability to generate momentum or and directly threaten a foe.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Offensive Powerhouses**: Gothorita's low Speed, lackluster defensive typing, and mediocre bulk make it vulnerable to most foes that are offensively oriented. Very commonly seen common examples are like Primal Groudon, Yveltal, and Primal Kyogre that can double switch into Gothorita and easily force it out.

**Shed Shell**: Some passive Pokemon like Blissey, Toxapex, and Skarmory are aware of Gothorita's existence in the tier, and they hold Shed Shell that to prevents them from getting trapped. Due to an the extreme rarity of Knock Off in the tier, Gothorita typically lacks a way to redeem its reduced usefulness in these matchups. (I don't understand. How does the rarity of KOff make goth lack a way to redeem its reduced usefulness?) (yes please address this because I do not understand either)

**Ghost-types**: Ghost-types like Mega Gengar, Marshadow,(AC) and Giratina-O cannot be trapped by Shadow Tag, and they can threaten Gothorita with their super effective (add space) STAB attacks.

**Dark-types**: Yveltal, Arceus-Dark, and Choice Band Tyranitar can similarly overpower Gothorita with their super effective (add space) attacks. However, it is important to note that Gothorita can trap support variants of Tyranitar with correct prediction.

**Pivoting Moves and Phazing Moves**: Magearna and defensive Zygarde-C have little concerns against Gothorita due to their access to Volt Switch and Dragon Tail,(AC) respectively, which forces one of the Pokemon Gothorita to exit the field.

**Residual Damage**: Due to the lack of Leftovers, Gothorita has more concerns about is more vulnerable to entry hazards than Gothitelle,(AC) making it and this leads it to having to think twice before switching it into the field to trap a passive foe. The said trait This also makes a the matchup against Ferrothorn and Celesteela a lot less reliable, as they can use Leech Seed on Gothorita when it is asleep and continue to prevail.

The lack of Leftovers also makes the matchup against Pokemon like Ferrothorn, Celesteela, and Mega Venusaur more difficult, as Gothitelle can mitigate the damage at the end of each turn with Leftovers, while Gothorita will take more sizeable sizable (sizeable is the non-US spelling sadly) damage from Leech Seed each turn and thus spend more time and more PP to successfully neutralize them.
* Better bulk doesn't help too much with Gothorita's tendency to rely on matchups to be effective; Gothorita is still a risky Pokemon to employ due to its helplessness against most offensive teams.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Charm and Confide are used to neutralize Pokemon that will struggle to KO Gothorita with reduced damage output.
* While Gothorita can easily overcome status with Rest, Taunt is still used to force attacks from trapped foes and make their attack attacking moves' PP diminish more quickly. Taunt also comes in handy for Gothorita in an event where it traps a Pokemon that it can temporarily shut down but struggles to outlast in a the long run, such as Ferrothorn, which will struggle to punish a switch-in once Gothorita cripples it with Taunt and switches out.
* Rest is used to give Gothorita a way to overcome repeated attacks from trapped foes and status ailments.
* Though it is difficult to fit, Heal Bell is worth considering to let Gothorita support its teammates even more and be more useful against in an unfavorable matchup.

Set Details
========

* Maximum investment in HP and Special Defense with a Sassy nature improves Gothorita's ability to take special attacks from Arceus formes and notably enables it to switch into Choice Scarf Xerneas and neutralize it. Minimum Speed is used to take minimum minimal damage from Ferrothorn's Gyro Ball, and this is hardly detrimental, as Gothorita is slower than Celesteela anyway.
* An alternative EV spread of 252 HP / 112 Def / 144 SpD can be used to still enable Gothorita to trap defensive Ho-Oh while still avoiding avoid the 3HKO from support Arceus formes after Stealth Rock and trap defensive Ho-Oh. (the wording sounded awkward to me)

Usage Tips
========

* In order to neutralize foes, switch Gothorita The common way Gothorita will proceed to neutralize a foe is switching into relatively weaker attacks like support Arceus formes' Judgment and any attack from defensive Ho-Oh's, (RC) Ho-Oh and repeatedly using use Charm or Confide, Taunt, and Rest to deplete the PP of all attacking moves from the victim. Trapped foes will eventually run out of their attacks' PP and will start to use Struggle until they faint, which can be completely taken advantage of by Gothorita's teammates.
* As Gothorita will rely on PP stalling to neutralize a foe that it traps, make the best use of moves like Rest, (AC) which that can potentially buy 48 turns, (AC) and Confide, (AC) which that has just enough PP to stall out Calm Mind from Arceus formes.
Slower teams also have many Pokemon that reactively reliably (reactively doesnt seem like the right word to put here; i replaced it with reliably, but potentially "impulsively" could work? afaik reactively is kind of more chemical-based so either way not the right word) switch into threats that they can reliably check, so this improves the odds for Gothorita to successfully trap problematic foes.
Scouting early-game will also generate an opportunity to observe how an opponent behaves against Gothitelle; (gothorita?) paranoid opponents can be pressured into making predictions with Pursuit trappers like Tyranitar and Alolan Muk at a certain point, while a reckless opponent is more likely to be punished and lose one of their important Pokemon after a single misplay.
* Have extra caution against Pokemon with Leech Seed. While Gothitelle will lose 1/16 of its health every turn because of Leftovers, Gothorita will lose 1/8 of its health every turn, making it less effective when PP stalling against Leech Seed users. Celesteela does sizeable sizable damage with Heavy Slam before Gothorita's Charm, and Ferrothorn beats Gothorita one-on-one with Bullet Seed and uses a lot of Gothorita's PP even if using another attack.
* Most other Pokemon that Gothorita is going to trap can traps are easily be (try to avoid passive voice in analyses) neutralized by Charm and Confide.

========

Using Gothorita can be hazardous otherwise due to its little to no the almost nonexistent defensive presence it has against any foe it cannot trap.
