[SET]
Name: Physically Offensive
Move 1: Power Whip
Move 2: Shadow Sneak
Move 3: Will-O-Wisp/Fire Blast/Rock Slide
Move 4: Synthesis
Item: Colbur Berry/Yache Berry
Ability: Frisk
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 72 HP/252 Attack/184 Speed
Gourgeist’s typing and bulk make it a great switchin to common physical attackers such as Choice Band Basculin, Pikachu, and Falinks. Power Whip provides Gourgeist with a strong spammable STAB, while Shadow Sneak allows Gourgeist a secondary STAB that allows it to revenge kill weakened mons or provide a little bit of chip before it goes down. The third slot depends on what your team needs the most help handling. Will-O-Wisp provides Gourgeist the utility to weaken physical attackers and provide passive damage to all foes. Fire Blast allows Gourgeist to hit mons such as Pawniard, Mawile, and Leafeon harder than it could with any other move. Rock Slide allows Gourgeist to target mons such as Vespiquen, Heatmor, and Togetic better than any of its other moves. Synthesis rounds out the move slots by allowing Gourgeist to have reliable recovery to continuously pivot in throughout the battle. Colbur Berry allows Gourgeist to take dark type attacks better from the many fighting types in the tier, and it also allows Gourgeist to stay in on Pawniard and burn it or dent it with Fire Blast. Yache Berry is another option to allow Gourgeist to perform the role of spinblocker against Mr. Rime and Mr. Mime Galar. The EVs on the set allows Gourgeist to outspeed Jolly Falinks, but you could opt for more speed investment if you aim to outspeed Thwackey.
Ice types like Glaceon and Lapras appreciate Gourgeist’s ability to switch in to fighting types, and both can work with Gourgeist to whittle down each other’s checks. Hazard setters such as Mareanie, Crustle, and Mawile appreciate the fact that Gourgeist can act as a spinblocker to help keep their hazards up, and Gourgeist will appreciate the additional chip that hazards provide to beating down its checks. Mareanie and Mawile also appreciate Gourgeist being able to take a Knock Off thanks to having a Colbur Berry, since they both would prefer to keep their items. Psychic Types such as Musharna and Mr. Rime appreciate Gourgeist’s ability to switch into First Impression and its ability to weaken Pawniard while they can help wear down mutual checks such as Mawile. Silvally formes also appreciate being paired with Gourgeist since many formes share checks with Gourgeist, so they’re able to wear down each other’s checks. Gourgeist appreciates having hazards removed from the field and the potential free switchins it gets brought by U-Turn or Parting Shot.
[SET]
Name: Nasty Plot
move 1: Nasty Plot
move 2: Shadow Ball
move 3: Fire Blast
move 4: Giga Drain/Synthesis
Item: Colbur Berry
Ability: Frisk
Nature: Timid
Evs: 72 HP/252 SpA/184 Speed
Gourgeist’s typing, speed, and access to Nasty Plot allows for it to take advantage of many common threats such as Falinks, Dubwool, and Mawile to set up and dent a team’s defensive core or to sweep late game. Shadow Ball is Gourgeist’s main STAB, and it hits much of the metagame quite well. Fire Blast allows Gourgeist to deal massive damage to mons such as Pawniard, Dubwool, and Roselia that are still able to stomach a Shadow Ball or two even when it is at +2. The last slot for reliable recovery really depends on what you prefer. Giga Drain allows for Gourgeist to deal more damage to threats such as Lapras and Stunfisk. Synthesis allows Gourgeist to have more reliable recovery which could let it come back into the match later to set up again or it can stay in and not be whittled down by passive mons. Substitute can also be ran on the set to avoid Toxic from passive mons like Mawile and Type Null, but it comes at the cost of valuable coverage or recovery. This set is EV’d to outspeed Jolly Falinks, but it could be benchmarked to outspeed Thwackey.
Gourgeist pairs well with other strong special attackers like Specs Basculin and Glaceon since they are able to help wear each other’s checks down. Gourgeist pairs well with fighting types such as Throh and Hitmontop because they are able to threaten mons Gourgeist has trouble with such as Type Null, Klang, and Pawniard. Strong physical attackers that struggle to break past Steels and/or Rock types like Leafeon and Persian appreciate Gourgeist breaking or heavily damaging their checks, which allows them to sweep or continue to break the opponent’s team.
