Graphics/Banners?

I'm a Smog-noob, so don't kill me. Lock this if needed, mods :)

From what I've heard, you need a badge to have a banner in your signature? (Not sure how to get one :/) Was this restriction made as a privilege or to prevent everyone from having large sigs? Just curious.

Also, why don't graphics get a little love :(? Sprites are treated nicely (which they should be), but I think banner makers should be able to make threads as well. I typically spend 40 minutes to an hour on a decent banner, more time than my sketch art. Is this because of the lack of badge-people or past spam?

A weekly/monthly graphics contest would be awesome, but I don't think it'll work out :-/ But if there are enough good graphics people, perhaps new forum themes or designs could be made?

I don't expect any of these requests to be carried out, but some explanations to this newbie would be nice :).
 
Just for reference, this probably belongs in simple questions, simple answers threads.

Anyway, graphics are restricted to badge holders as a 'perk' for being a community member (I think).

The list of badges and a rough guideline of how to get them can be found here.

I believe there is a banner thread somewhere where you can post banners at the request of other users. You can also make banners for tournaments and trade threads, but there is no banner display thread as far as I know.

So if you aren't too active or good in the competitive battle scene, it really limits some of the badges you are eligible for. This does make sense, but I suck at battling lol.

I saw the one Avatar/Request thread, but it seems more like a request board where designers just fill the requests and aren't really showing any other banners. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have some other ideas too, guess I'll have to PM a Mod later :).
 
Yeah, it's a perk, though really the idea that someone wouldn't contribute without the "reward" of an image signature is somewhat weird. I think the idea is that images are abusable and at least badgeholders won't abuse them... in theory.

Badges are outlined in the Badge FAQ. You'll get them if you make an effort to help the site in some way. It's generally not the best idea to get a badge for the sake of it as it's not a "cool pass" or anything, but they're there as a nice incentive.

PR was supposed to be "frozen" with new badgeholders not automatically admitted but I honestly doubt that will remain the case.
 
Smeargle's Studio is for all visual art. If you want to make banners, you're free to do so. It's just you can't use them here because image signatures are for the most part pretty useless.

Actually, the most you get for being awesome at battling and nothing else are trophies (of course, the Tiering Contributor and check mark, among others, are earned by contributing one's knowledge of the metagame to the community). If you haven't noticed, there IS an Artist badge, and plenty of other badges that don't necessarily have to do with battling. I can name quite a few badged users off the top of my head who don't batte much/at all/anymore.
