:ss/azelf:
Lake Valor is the resting place of Azelf, the Willpower Pokemon. Unfortunately for the battlers, Azelf was not warned ahead of time about the incoming presence at their lake...

Effects
Azelf's natural defense system has been tripped:
  1. At the start of the match: Stealth Rock is active on both sides of the battlefield.
  2. At the end of Round 3: one (1) layer of Spikes is laid on both sides of the battlefield.
  3. At the end of Round 6: Sticky Web is laid on both sides of the battlefield.
  4. At the end of Round 9: one (1) layer of Toxic Spikes is laid on both sides of the battlefield.
  5. At the end of Round 12: Stealth Rock, Sticky Web, one (1) layer of Spikes, and one (1) layer of Toxic Spikes are laid on both sides of the battlefield.
  6. At the end of Round 15, and each round thereafter: each active Pokemon takes 25 fixed damage. This effect is the final effect to resolve at the end of a round.
Additionally:
- Stealth Rock does 9 damage regardless of the typing of the Pokemon damaged by the hazard.
- Spikes do half damage to Pokemon that are not grounded.
- Toxic Spikes apply to non-grounded Pokemon as well.
- Sticky Web reduces Evasion by one (1) stage as well.

Codifications
Camouflage: Water
Secret Power: Confusion
Nature Power: Water Pulse

All around the perimeter of Lake Valor, trainers and staff are staging up for the battles to come. Those who are finished with their preparations, for the most part, have their eyes cast here. It could be to size up the competition, to look for strategies to steal, or simply because the winning side of the lake is sure to host the most ferocious battles.

The most interesting member of epicdrill's lineup today is not her mega Pokemon, but instead Type: Full the Silvally. Being able to target one of her opponent's threats specifically, as well as being able to dispose of hazards and pivot easily, makes this a Pokemon to watch closely.

TheEver's team brings Descent the Volkraken, a dangerous Pokemon known for its ability to restrict enemy switching while still dealing high damage. With matching up well with epicdrill's mega type-wise, it's likely that this is a Pokemon both players are going to have to plan around.

Here goes nothing, I guess.

Come on, where is your confidence?

Sending out Garchomp @ Garchompite

Azalea, why don't you start us off?

Leading with Azalea the Clefable @ Life Orb
Moonblast, Moonblast, Dazzling Gleam
IF Garchomp hits you with a damaging Poison-type move, THEN Counter and push back actions.
IF Garchomp hits you with a damaging Steel-type move, THEN Counter and push back actions.
IF the weather is Sandstorm when you are to act AND you are to use a damaging Fairy-type move this action AND Garchomp is not to use Sandstorm next action, THEN Sunny Day and push back actions.

The opening matchup here is interesting even before any orders are given. Silvally's high damage potential in any type, as well as its utility and pivoting abilities, makes sending out first quite complicated as long as Silvally's item is undecided. With a Meta Metagross lurking behind, getting her counter to Mega Metagross weakened or KO'd by Silvally could lead to disaster later in the match.

Mega Garchomp as a first sendout is perhaps Eve's safest choice. Her Mega has one target of importance on the enemy team in the opposing Mega, but Eve has another comfortable check in the wings and her shark can do high damage to anything she points it at. Pain's Rough Skin also makes checking her with Silvally more complicated, putting the onus of damage control onto epicdrill in the first round.

Responding with Clefable is a safe and consistent option from epicdrill. This is Azalea's best matchup out of all of Eve's Pokemon, but ordering first makes pinning down and damaging Pain complicated.

9, 174, 128, 125, 184, 50, 179, 193, 159, 32, 19, 105, 99, 95, 220

It shouldn't matter this round, but I should really switch to rolling 600-sided dice. Hard habit to break! Thankfully, neither team has a Pokemon with the Compoundeyes ability.

Start of Round 1
Pointed not-stones dig in to each battler!
:garchomp-mega:-9 HP
:clefable:-0 HP (Magic Guard)

Step 1
:garchomp-mega:

Pain dug a hole!
-10 En

:clefable:
Azalea used Moonblast!
Pain avoided the attack!
-6 En

:garchomp-mega:
Pain used Dig!
Crit <= 10: 9
A critical hit!
(4 + 3 + 3 + 12 - 7) = 15 DMG

Because Eve has second order with such a highly damaging Pokemon, epicdrill has to spend substitutions on preserving HP. With no subs spent on matchup control or evasive options, due to the pressure Mega Garchomp exerts, Eve gets to have her choice of answer. She chooses here to change the matchup and preserve her HP for the incoming fresh challenger.

Step 2
:garchomp-mega:
Pain dug a hole!
-14 En

:clefable:
Azalea used Moonblast!
Pain avoided the attack!
-10 En

:garchomp-mega:
Pain used Dig!
Crit <= 10: 174
(4 + 3 + 12 - 7) = 12 DMG

Step 3
:clefable:
Azalea used Dazzling Gleam!
Crit <= 10: 128
(8 + 3 + 3 + 7 - 7) * 1.5 = 21 DMG
-5 En

:garchomp-mega:
Pain used Iron Tail + Dragon Tail!
Crit <= 10: 125
Effect <= 72: 184
(10 + 12 - 7) * 1.5 = 22.5 ~ 23 DMG
-24 En

Mega Garchomp's immense Attack makes itself known here. Pain is racking up impressive damage on her first opponent using a middling-power un-STAB combination and from consecutive evasive attacks. In addition, a speed-boosting nature allows TheEver the luxury of combining two low-accuracy moves without risk.

Eve is able to sidestep the Steel-type substitution because of its timing, saving even more HP. Trading Pain's combo for a new target to beat on saves Eve from Pain's worst matchup and has a chance to worsen epicdrill's team lineup overall. Let's see who's coming in...!

Willow the Pyroak will be coming in to the next round. In addition to shuffling the matchup, Eve also scores a small amount of free damage from entry hazards. If she manages to take a big chunk out of this wall of epicdrill's, how will that open up the match? Conversely, if Pain takes too much damage in this round, how will she deal with Quinn the Metagross later in the match? There's only two people who can show us the answer.

epicdrill equips Willow with an item.

We'll do our best not to give you the chance.

Rock Slide > Stone Edge > Rock Slide
** [CASOA] IF Pyroak is to use Counter THEN use Earth Power the first and third instances, Dragon Pulse the second instance, and restart actions each instance.
** [CASOA] IF Pyroak is to use a Burn-Inflicting move exactly once THEN use Dig (Evasive) and restart actions.
** [CASOT] IF Garchomp is asleep THEN use Sleep Talk (Aerial Ace, Poison Jab, Rock Slide, Stone Edge) and restart actions.

We take an unfortunate amount of damage here, but I think we still end up in a decent spot assuming we don't get unlucky!

Inferno, Fire Spin+Solar Beam, Inferno

Willow the Pyroak comes in, high physical bulk and an advantageous typing. With a Lagging Tail and the threat of Inferno, Pain the Garchomp is under threat from a large variety of status options. Rather than spending valuable actions fighting status with an option like Substitute, TheEver instead presses her offensive advantage while also threatening to steal actions with a flinch.

Instead of trying to contain Pain's high damage, it seems like epicdrill is setting up to switch yet again, or at least retain the option to do so. Notice that epicdrill hasn't chosen to use a substitution in case of flinch, since she doesn't want her trapping combination to drift from the same step as Pain's Stone Edge. By ordering Inferno twice, she gets two shots at applying that vital Burn without further complicating her position with non-damaging control options.

Start of Round 2
Pointed not-stones dig in to Willow!
:pyroak:-9 HP

Step 1
:garchomp-mega:
Pain used Rock Slide!
Crit <= 25: 325
Effect <= 180: 85
(8 + 12 - 8) * 1.5 = 18 DMG
-6 En

:pyroak:
Willow flinched!

The first Inferno doesn't go to plan, but that's why epicdrill ordered a spare!

Step 2
:garchomp-mega:
Pain used Stone Edge!
Crit <= 75: 127
(10 + 12 - 8) * 1.5 = 21 DMG!
-7 En

:pyroak:
Willow began taking in light!

:pyroak:
Willow used Fire Spin + Solar Beam!
Crit <= 25: 127
(12 + 3 + 7 - 7) = 15 DMG
-25 En
Pain was trapped!

:garchomp-mega:-2 HP (Fire Spin)

Trapping Pain went off without a hitch. Thanks to Willow's Lagging Tail, there wasn't much that could go wrong with this step.

Step 3
:garchomp-mega:
Pain used Rock Slide!
Crit <= 25: 512
Effect <= 180: 25
(8 + 12 - 8) * 1.5 = 18 DMG
-6 En

:pyroak:
Willow flinched!

And there it is, the result with 9% odds of occurring. Having lost two actions in the face of TheEver's mega Pokemon, epicdrill now finds herself at a huge HP deficit as well as staring down the same unappealing matchup options as before. What was her plan for this result? We'll have to wait for our battling trainers to show us the answers to our questions.

Pain's energy is finally beginning to run out, but simply attacking more is cheap and effective.

Well, that double flinch is probably game-losing when paired with my awful first round orders, but we'll see how this works.

Switching to Azalea the Clefable, no counterswitch because of Fire Spin
Moonblast, Ice Beam, Moonblast
[CASOA] IF Garchomp is to use a D/E move AND you are slower than Garchomp, THEN Meteor Beam the first two instances and Wish the third.
IF you have at most 15 HP when you are to act A2, THEN Ice Beam+Hyper Beam.
IF Garchomp successfully uses a Protective move, THEN Soft-Boiled, pushing back actions and subs.

epicdrill wastes no time re-establishing her matchup of choice into TheEver's mega Pokemon. All three of her substitutions target Pain's options for surviving. Getting this menace off of the field is her first apparent priority.

In turn, TheEver able to stretch Pain's little remaining energy with simple, efficient attacks. Of particular interest is the way her orders and substitutions for Pain are targeting epicdrill's second substitution, through its HP threshold. The plan seems to be to bring Azalea to
just above the stated amount, and then strike a decisive blow. Is the choice to use Bite made for its specific expected damage? Only our battlers can tell us.

( click for rolls )

Start of Round 3
:clefable:-0 HP (Magic Guard)

Step 1
:garchomp-mega:
Pain used Bite!
Crit <= 25: 438
Effect <= 180: 407
(6 + 12 - 7) * 0.75 = 8.25 ~ 8 DMG!
-4 En

:clefable:
Azalea used Moonblast!
Crit <= 25: 413
Effect <= 180: 318
(10 + 3 + 3 + 7 - 7) * 1.5 = 24 DMG
-6 En

At this stage in the battle, TheEver has few options for preserving Pain's HP. With her orders employing exactly none of the reliable options, the incoming attacks are quite potent, showcasing why epicdrill was so keen on returning to this matchup.

A flinch here would have been brutal, giving Pain the option to switch out to wreak further havoc later in the match. Mercifully for epicdrill, this doesn't occur.

Step 2
:garchomp-mega:
Pain used Earthquake!
Crit <= 25: 315
(10 + 3 + 12 - 7) = 18 DMG
-6 En

:clefable:
Azalea used Ice Beam!
Crit <= 25: 38
Effect <= 60: 159
(9 + 3 + 7 - 7) * 2 = 24 DMG!
-7 En

With Azalea at 19 HP, epicdrill's substitution order for her doesn't trigger, and Azalea merrily continues following her original orders.

Isn't it curious how, of all major status conditions, Freeze has a chance to fall off instantly? We don't see that in action with this attack of Azalea's, but it's possible. Picture, if you will, this selachian wyrm sloughing off the less-than-immobilizing ice as if it were so much ground flour.

Step 3
:garchomp-mega:
Pain used Poison Jab!
Crit <= 25: 413
Effect <= 60: 290
(8 + 12 - 7) * 1.5 = 19.5 ~ 20 DMG
Azalea :reaper cloth:fainted!
-6 En

Delivered with the promised precision, Pain sidesteps the ordered combination substitution and picks up a very damning KO. The path of damage left by TheEver's mega Pokemon clearly demonstrates their power. Of particular impact was Pain's combination, spent phazing Azalea and bringing Willow the Pyroak, locking her in as a choice in epicdrill's roster. The choice between a mega-capable Pokemon and one that is not is less certain than it may seem to the audience. epicdrill will have to look ahead into the matchups that lay ahead and decide carefully who she wishes to use.

Make no mistake -- even with a mere 3 HP remaining, Pain is still an incredibly dangerous Pokemon.

The next round and the matchup choices made by both battlers are, numerically quite interesting. If Pain leaves the field via switching, TheEver won't be able to return them to play unless the entry hazards are disposed of. The way epicdrill deals with Pain's last precious actions, be they now or later on, will shape the way she climbs back into this match, if such a thing can be done.

Quinn, epicdrill's own Mega Pokemon, now takes the field to face down Pain's last gasp. Waiting this long to field her heaviest hitter could have some consequences, due to the hazards piling up courtesy of the arena. She effectively has less of her mega Pokemon to work with simply as a result of waiting. Furthermore, this means that Type: Full the Silvally will be sitting this match out.

To try and force epicdrill to finish Pain off, TheEver orders a set of attacks that are guaranteed not to exhaust Pain's energy. If she had instructed Pain to self-KO, she would have had the opportunity to order second into Quinn with a fresh Pokemon. Perhaps instead, she had a plan for Pain surviving one more round. Either way, that former eventuality will remain unexplored.

TheEver meets her opponent's mega Pokemon with Descent the Volkraken, an offensive powerhouse with little to fear the types of the majority of Quinn's contact attacks in particular. In all likelihood, the reason Descent is on TheEver's bench today is to deal with Quinn specifically. The Cleanse Tag she's equipped Descent with gets extra value, on top of negating hazard damage, by protecting them from the ongoing Sandstorm as well.

Despite her overwhelming presence, Quinn has a lot of ground to make up. Pain had to face no direct counters, given that even Azalea took full damage from their Ground attacks; and in addition, her rampage enjoyed quite a bit of luck. Descent harshly resists Quinn's best STABs and very high damage in return. To make up for lost momentum, Quinn will need to both play precisely and have some luck of her own. This round also helps to emphasize just how important entry hazard damage can be, even though it may feel small. And on top of all of that, another layer of hazards piles up this round: Sticky Web, cursing any Pokemon who switches in to be likely outsped by their opponent.

To be clear, both of these Pokemon are offensive powerhouses; as you will soon see below. That alone will make this a very volatile round.

This... is not an enviable position that epicdrill is in! With luck against her and a single critical combination from TheEver early in the match, epicdrill is now facing down both a half-health Volkraken and an unknown, full-health Pokemon besides. Startling upsets can and do happen, but I wouldn't wager on it right now.

TheEver deserves recognition for playing both steadily and carefully. Sticking to safe, consistent options to maintain her lead, and choosing to curtail her opponent's options each round instead of making greedy choices to gamble for even more advantage. She's managed to leverage her early lead in every subsequent round of the battle to maintain her winning position.
