BLACKSBURG, Va. - A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday, killing 21 people in the deadliest campus shooting rampage in U.S. history. The gunman was killed, bringing to death toll to 22, but it was unclear if he was shot by police or took his own life.

"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said Virginia Tech president Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified."
The name of the gunman was not immediately released, and investigators offered no motive for the attack. It was not immediately known if the gunman was a student.

The bloodbath took place at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus, beginning at about 7:15 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed dormitory that houses 895 people, and continuing about two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building, authorities said. Police said they were still investigating the shooting at the dorm when they got word of the gunfire at the classroom building.

Some of the dead were students. One student was killed in the dorm, and the others were killed in the classroom, Virginia Tech Police Chief W.R. Flinchum.
Up until Monday, the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history was a rampage that took place in 1966 at the University of Texas at Austin, where Charles Whitman climbed the clock tower and opened fire with a rifle from the 28th-floor observation deck. He killed 16 people before he was shot to death by police. In the Columbine High bloodbath near Littleton, Colo., in 1999, two teenagers killed 12 fellow students and a teacher before taking their own lives.

The deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history was in Killen, Texas, in 1991, when George Hennard drove his pickup into a Luby's Cafeteria and shot 23 people to death, then himself.
Founded in 1872, Virginia Tech is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwestern Virginia, about 160 miles west of Richmond. With more than 25,000 full-time students, it has the state's largest full-time student population. The school is best known for its engineering school and its powerhouse football team.

The rampage took place on a brisk spring day, with snow flurries swirling around the campus.
A gasp could be heard at a campus news conference when the police chief said at least 20 people had been killed. Previously, only one person was thought to have been killed.

Investigators from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives began marking and recovering the large number of shell casings and will trace the weapon used, according to an ATF official who spoke on condition of anonymity because local authorities are leading the investigation.
A White House spokesman said. President Bush was horrified by the rampage and offered his prayers to the victims and the people of Virginia.
"The president believes that there is a right for people to bear arms, but that all laws must be followed," spokeswoman Dana Perino said.
After the shootings, all entrances to the campus were closed, and classes were canceled through Tuesday. The university set up a meeting place for families to reunite with their children at the Inn at Virginia Tech. It also made counselors available and planned a convocation for Tuesday at the basketball arena.

After the shootings, students were told to stay inside away from the windows.
"There's just a lot of commotion. It's hard to tell exactly what's going on," said Jason Anthony Smith, 19, who lives in the dorm where shooting took place.
Aimee Kanode, a freshman from Martinsville, said the shooting happened on the fourth floor of West Ambler Johnston dormitory, one floor above her room. Kanode's resident assistant knocked on her door about 8 a.m. to notify students to stay put.
"They had us under lockdown," Kanode said. "They temporarily lifted the lockdown, the gunman shot again."
"We're all locked in our dorms surfing the Internet trying to figure out what's going on," Kanode said.
Madison Van Duyne, a student who was interviewed by telephone on CNN, said: "We are all in lockdown. Most of the students are sitting on the floors away from the windows just trying to be as safe as possible."

Police said there had been bomb threats on campus over the past two weeks by authorities but said they have not determined a link to the shootings.
It was second time in less than a year that the campus was closed because of a shooting.
Last August, the opening day of classes was canceled and the campus closed when an escaped jail inmate allegedly killed a hospital guard off campus and fled to the Tech area. A sheriff's deputy involved in the manhunt was killed on a trail just off campus. The accused gunman, William Morva, faces capital murder charges.
Nearly a new record for most kills in a single spree, may provide the push toward more gun control in America. Bolded section is pretty interesting.
In a slightly related note, oh look, my college is mentioned.

What are these genocides thinking about? I guess it's an obvious consequence due to living in a rich country.

Apparently there's 34 deaths now, including the shootist, who (according to my news site) has been shot by the police. The sicko lined the students up in a row and shot them. What a (BAN ME PLEASE).

Can't blame anything but mental problems and such for this, really. ]:

Jesus fucking christ that's horrible. You'd think people'd have been more careful after what happened at Columbine High School, but noooooo, they had to do it again. ><;

but of course, the president still has to make mention of the fact that he thinks everyone has the right to bear arms

the world is a fucking joke

The US should tighten its gun laws. No question about it. The deadliest mass shooting in US history... It's fucking stupid that it is so easy to intentionally take the life of someone you don't even know.

Being here in Washington DC doesn't land me any speaking rights, but it does make me feel really uneasy about all this.

The day started with the local area falling into a black-out, so we didn't get power until about 2:08PM EST (My Alarm clock is still blinking, so it shouldn't be too hard to put it together.) I turn on the TV to see that at least 31 people are died in a shooting on a Virginia Tech Campus, not really saying about shooter himself.

The report read that he, the shooter, was either killed by another source (Police, another student), or killed himself, but you all already knew.

To get to the point, I hate to see things happen like, it being in my own home state not making it any easier.

According to what I read, there were two seperate attacks that were two hours apart. The first shooting was at around 7:00 am EST, and the shootings continued around 9:30 am. On seperate sides of the campus. There was no warning about the 7:00 shootings to anyone until 9:22. (Information courtesy of yahoo.com). Sounds like someone might have tanked something in the emergency procedure here.

I also would like to ad my condolences. I live in Denver, Colorado (about 3 miles from Columbine). My friend was involved with the goings on there, so I have a good understanding of what they feel.

Its 32 deaths now. Its the US' fucking fault letting people bear arms this is why shit like this happens

Have we not gotten over this yet? There are still going to be shootings like this even with tighter gun laws, sick idiots can still get access to guns.

Is there a list of the dead named anywhere? I really want to make sure no friends of mine are on it...

Oh my God, some of my best friends go to Virginia Tech! I really hope they're all right. But I seriously didn't know they had a shooting last year as well.

.. There are still going to be shootings like this even with tighter gun laws, sick idiots can still get access to guns.
Bingo.

It's really messed up that this happened. I'm not one to usually comment on the news, especially since I feel the same as everyone else. But, there's not much you can do to stop this kinda thing without infringing on the well-being of everyday life. There's no way to tell what someone has in their pocket at all point in time. And no matter the security, they'll always be a way around it. If things is quiet, you think security is gonna give 110% everyday? The world is a really messed up place. And regardless of how badly people want it, nothing can force that to change.

BTW, some sixteen year olds in my old neighborhood pooled their money together to buy a gun. Accordingly they've changed their names from J.R. to J-Glocks, and from Terry to Terror. If some babies can get their hands on metal just to play around with and look tough(although they can't afford bullets), how can you take gun control seriously?

Honestly I don't know what to think =/ This is really sad. I'd also like to add that in my opinion, even if sick people such as this guy could still get their hands on guns if the United States tightened up on gun laws, at least it wouldn't happen as often. So I still think it'd be a good idea.

i think just trying to take guns away is impossible.. hell, bury one in the dirt if youre that motivated... or, i could be completely wrong.. that's just the obvious for me.

waiting to hear the gunman's punishment. hopefully something very interesting.

The latest fad: in school genocides. They're occurring far too frequently now and its getting repulsive.

In response to those who said "we should tighten up the "right to bear arms law", that really wouldn't do much. If a dude wants to kill himself/others, he'll do it. He's not just gonna stop because the law says he can't.

Last month some huge guy on 'roids went on a rampage through my lunch room and viciously attacked 3 Juniors. What's the reason? He wants to maintain his "tough guy" ego. Anyone says one thing negative 0about him, they get raped. This kid was ripping on one dude so bad that his nose was on the other side of his face, and there was atleast a liter of blood on the floor. The security guards did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, and we just had to watch. And this isn't the ghetto I'm talking about, my school is in one of the most prestigous towns in NJ. It can happen anywhere.

Wow. Our world fucking sucks. Excuse me as I go inhabit Mars. Much better up there -_-

I don't even know what to say when shit like this happens, its just terrible. My condolences to anyone who had friends or family involved in the shooting. What a damn shame.

Taking away guns takes away guns from the real citizens, the criminals will still get guns, whats another law to someone already breaking a law. I could sit here and show you all kinds of statistics that gun control does nothing to curb shottings and violent crimes, in fact in many places the problems rise because a criminal doesn't have to worry about robbing a house and the owner having a shotgun. Trust me gun control doesn't solve much, its a major source of debate and everyone has their opinion, but honestly I don't see what gun control does other than keep guns out of the hands of the normal people.

This guy is terrible and honestly how does he get 2 extra hours to sit around on his ass or something and then kill 30 more people, this is what really upsets me, someone is going to get fired and in some major deep shit here.

Maybe everyone should just carry on gun on themselves. That way if shit like this happens, people will have a way to protect themselves. But, I'm probably wrong.

This make me sad... i hope that he gunman didnt die and then get lifetime in jail!(if something like this happening in Norway the maxium punishment would be 21years...god bless america)

According to the article I read, there were two separate shootings- two students were killed in a dorm building earlier this morning, but they 'had reason to believe the shooter left campus.' Apparently they don't know yet if the shootings are related, though that's awfully coincidental for me to swallow. Evidently the school has also been closed twice recently due to bomb threats.

As far as gun regulations go- it's already illegal to shoot someone (duh). In most places it is also illegal to bring them onto school campuses or government owned property. The lack of laws is not the problem- the problem is that people don't obey the ones that we have. That said, harsher penalties for violations might not be a bad idea.

I have some friends at the school (they're all fine, thank goodness) and they said that most people are very shaken and scared, for obvious reasons, but they're anticipating staying at the school. I think if something like that happened to me I'd want to get away from there- any thoughts?

What a waste of flesh. I hope those people up there are doing alright. This kind of thing has to shake you to your very core.

I'm just worried that these attacks are going to be even more widespread and even more violent as time goes on. And frankly I'm pessimistic enough to believe that we're never, ever going to find the root of this problem as long as we can scapegoat video games or whatever demon happens to be popular with the other nuts.

What a sad world we live in. Almost doesn't seem worth it to be here sometimes.
