Resource Hackmons Premier League I - Post-tour thread

thanks to the necrozmas for a wonderful tour:psyglad:
my time playing pokemon has been pretty funny (and not too dissimilar to some others in this tour i think)- playing hackmons in middle school and going through all the ups and downs through that time was a blast and i've always been surprised at how the scene has persisted since. i've been playing exclusively draft with my buddies for about 5 years now, but hackmons was always in the back of my mind and hearing about this tour was exciting af. even more exciting to actually be remembered (idk how LOL but guess there's only so many people who play these cursed metas) and drafted for my first team tour ever!! cause i was SWEATING HARD when all the teams were out of points so very happy to be able to put up some wins for the squad and make their draft decision worthwhile.

shoutouts to aerobee for the immense amount of help with derusting test games and teams because my 10 year old builder was not cutting it and i was able to avoid completely embarrassing myself with all your support. if this happens again next year i am going to need to step it up because i must've built a total of one team this tour LOL so i had better get a clue by then
shoutouts as well of course to all the necrozmas for being homies and having positive vibes all around and for being so good at the game wtf, i had no idea how everything would go but yall just Won week after week so okay nice worked for me thanks for killing it :quagchamppogsire:
finally thanks to everyone who came together to make this tour happen and to all the players for the good times! looking forward to next year

random metagames in team tours are always a bit funky because eliminating the prep element really takes out a big chunk of the team interaction, but personally i really enjoyed HC this tournament and I think it showed that it is not as luck dependant as people usually think
I will also say there are in fact things that you can prep in HC - Nudepantsman came in with handy tips on the opponent's general styles a handful of times throughout the season and I don't think I would have done quite as well without him

obviously it's high variance, but overall playing Bo5 i felt solidly in control of the final outcomes each time (Bo3 maybe not as much). would love to be back if this tour happens again!

s/o aerobee Chessking345 for drafting a winning team, awesome work. and big up to the rest of the teammates, we did not chat much but the vibes were always good and I was happy to be on the team with you all

Welp, tour is over, and this just proves why the PH playerbase is better than the BH one. So you may be wondering,
"mAyO, sInCe ThE tOuR iS oVeR, wHaT aRe YoU gOnNa Do?????2?2?2?"

Well today, I'm gonna answer that.

POST-TOUR RESOLUTIONS

1. Be not an ass teambuilder. As we all know, my teambuilding skills are ass. This year, I'm not gonna let that slide. I was humiliated by Guysmash , mainly because I was unprepared. I was so focused on teambuilding for Cazenovia , I didn't know what to do when the Gwaodons pulled out their glock. Next year, I can guarantee that won't happen.

2. Not overread. One of the main reason I lost one of my games to Guysmash was because of an overread for the Melo switch. You see, I had a MGar active against his MBro, and could've easily killed it with Moongeist. However, I tried to predict the switch into Meloetta, so I switched into my other MGar with Bug Buzz. Next year, I will study the player's tendencies and intellect very closely.

That's pretty much it. Hope to see y'all next year for HPL II!

Crazy crazy tour that came down to the very last games. This HPL was truly an amazing experience, from the triple SV slots giving the opportunity for many newer mains and non-BH mains to perform to the old gen slots bringing back several previously retired-from-BH players, and from the inclusion of PH tiers leading to interactions with the large PH community + players to Hackmons Cup games being some of the wildest and funniest (while delivering consistent weekday games!). Having a tour of this scale really allows the larger metas like 9BH and 6PH to develop rapidly, which for the former is fantastic immediately following ompl and ssnl and some pretty major meta developments despite no tiering shifts, while for the latter was super interesting as an outsider seeing the innovations despite the tier not actually having an active ladder for a while now, and it also provides a solid competitive scene for the older gen metas to be played.
Very happy that this amazing tour is my first managing experience.
Going into this tour due to irl stuff going on I was unable to confirm my availability even weeks into the tour so I planned to manage and not self-buy to still be involved with the tour per akira's suggestion, as while I can't be sure I would be able to play, supporting was very likely possible still. As it turns out, not self-buying and playing in the tour worked out more than fine, giving a break after ompl where I was minorly burnt out, but also it let me engage with the rest of the tour more I think as I didn't have to worry about my own game and prep (and as it turns out support too, was completely useless later on).
I wanted to cover this because preparing for the draft was really interesting and fun and ultimately I think the result was pretty good, there were 0 regrets over the draft, almost everything went perfectly, and we ended up with what I believe to be the clear strongest draft. In fact I think this helped contribute to the amazing team vibes we had throughout the tour, as while we had some hiccups there was never a doubt that we would cruise to the finals.

I had a fair bit of pseudo-auction experience just from mass ompl moccs and fairly good knowledge of the BH playerbase so I had some idea of what I wanted to do in the actual auction. The main difference was that I had no clue what the other managers were up to since other than Purple Frogs none of them had any managing experience either (pannu did not count and also literally did not count). I also was not knowledgeable about the non-BH pools at all, but thankfully aerobee covered them which was huge. Special shoutouts Icemaster for sending aerobee some draft tips that were very helpful.

One of the difficulties for this auction, on top of the aforementioned volatility of other managers, was a lack of moccs for price gauging. The pool is also rather interesting: 3 SV slots was definitely intimidating to fill out esp with me not selfbuying and several good picks preferring the older gens, which was reflected in trying out the moccs. I also had some uncertainties with me not around for all of CT SS meta, so I wasn't entirely familiar with the playerbase strengths. Meanwhile PH side had a lot of older players returning after breaks and such, as well as a general lack of tournament records. Thus, overall, estimating prices was going to be challenging.

Unlike some other draft plans I have read before, I didn't really have specific players I really really wanted that I was willing to pay significantly extra for so I was looking for a more flexible plan that can be updated as we pick up players, as this I believe can help with the uncertainty of the auction. Mainly, I wanted to look for fun and engaging players that can creative a lively teamcord, as after participating in several team tours I feel like this is a really important part to keep the momentum going and offset any bad weeks, as well obviously offering a way more enjoyable experience throughout the tour and make the tour overall more memorable. For this reason, there were some that stood out pretty clearly as great picks as long as price was not too extraordinary, as while I never teamed with them before, I did not doubt they would provide exactly the environment I was looking for. On the other hand, while I didn't really have any players I specifically did not want, there were some players that I expected to be overpriced for me from reactions/moccs so those I never really planned around getting (more on that later lol). Being ok with picking up pretty much any player also has a side benefit of being able to upbid pretty freely which is always nice.

For rough budget allocation, generally I believed that 9 and 8BH were both more stable in terms of meta in comparison to 7BH, as well as the PHs after some discussion, so theoretically it should come down more to player skill. 8BH however, had one of the more stacked pools I've ever seen, and crucially here I expected most of the other managers to be rather unfamiliar with several of the older gen faces, which combined with some mocc price checking made me believe that we can pick up some fantastic 8BH players for cheap. 7BH is slightly different as the names were more recognized and had some overlap with 9BH players so more ended up allocated there. Another factor was how none of the other managers were PH players and thus less familiar with the pool and also unable to play/support, so it was likely they would spend more there. With aerobee knowing several solid less standout PH names, the budget there was a bit lower. This led to me strongly wanting to pick up some bigger names to solidify a very strong 9BH core, which I was thinking would be 2 extremely good players + a very competent clicker that I can help build if needed. The last thing was I didn't really want to go over the min player requirement, as I was looking at several players that were flexible already, so subs should never be an issue, and I definitely wanted to give every player a chance to play at least once, if not twice, and more players could end up making that challenging, as it always feels bad making players sit out.

Looking back I think mostly everything went to plan. The main thing that stood out is that we did end up getting 1 over the min players as there were simply so many great names we wanted to pick up with an ample amount of funds near the end despite the aggressive spending early (especially considering my usual tendencies), but this worked out really well anyways as everyone was incredible and spreading games out was pretty smooth.
Managing wasn't that hard, but I suppose that was because I wasn't actually playing lol and aerobee helping split a significant portion of the work. Originally I had intents of helping around the BH slots for ideas, building, and testing. As it turned out, I both got lazy and our BH players were actually so incredible and active that they were fully capable of doing literally everything. Hindsight I should've done more, at least providing scouts regardless of how useful it could be and more proactively offered tests and such, and is something I will definitely keep in mind for future.

Working out lineups was pretty stress-free for basically the entire tour, with maybe the only exception being finding the player to play 7PH in tiebreaks. I think it can be attributed to how many options we had open in terms of shuffling and subbing players if needed, as well as a dominant showing in the early rounds which kind of allowed us to work with whatever. I also did manage to make sure that every player at least had the opportunity to play one week, and I also tried to provide more opportunities. Luckily we only ever had to make one emergency sub which also didn't impact the week result. My mistake in this was consistently forgetting to ask players early enough for responses each week about any preferences in the following week, though thankfully players were able to inform us ahead of time for any weeks they cannot play.

I'm definitely looking forward to managing again as this was really fun. Hardest part of managing is for sure writing post tour posts.
Shoutouts in draft order

aerobee - Prior to this tour I had never really interacted with you, only a bit during OMPL, and didn't really know much other than "pure hackmons plays pure hackmons and is really good at pure hackmons", and so when I was looking for a co I wasn't confident that you would agree. Thank you for agreeing as it was such a pleasure comanaging with you. You are a super reliable and funny person and it was very assuring having you handle anything PH and HC related since I was completely clueless there. You are such an incredibly strong player and knowledgeable about PH, and despite claiming to be losing interest was still able to handle all 3 slots. I know you aren't really happy about the record, but you pulled 4 straight wins in one of the most chaotic metas this tour before anyone was able to start adapting including shaking the meta with an absolutely gross set AND providing instrumental support for the 6PH slots that comfortably had the best record, and also stepping forward to play the tiebreak meta of our choice and clutching it back. If you end up unquitting (or pick up bh? :eyes:) for next year I would love to team again.

Quantum Tesseract - To be completely honest, I never expected to get you considering the insane mocc prices and your standout reputation. Then you got nommed, I upbid, and suddenly you're on the team. Then for half of week 1 we started panicking as you never ended up joining the teamcord after missing the dm lol. People (including me) always doubt the generic qt balance builds yet in the end you easily secured one of the most impressive records and considering the unfortunate w3 game could've easily been at the top with sammy. You also delivered some of the more memorable games with the most ridiculous first 5 turns in your 8BH game and completely surprising Fish with a HO, then came in incredibly clutch in the finals securing two absolutely crucial and exciting games against one of if not the strongest opposition this tour.

XxLazzerpenguinxX - You were probably the only player that I really wanted, so much so that I had to force myself to make some alternate draft plans if I ended up not being able to get you. Chatting with you about anything, testing and building BH are all super enjoyable and you are definitely one of the nicest and funniest people to talk to, something I knew would be instrumental in being able to keep the team energy going. Your dedication was also insane, despite irl stuff happening you were able to cook up super diverse teams across multiple slots while supporting the rest. I hope in WC you get the quality games you wanted but didn't end up getting unfortunately, and best of luck with your paper and presentation.

willdbeast - Originally I wasn't sure how motivated you were to play, as I knew if you were down to play you would be a strong unpredictable force but you mentioned on sign up that you preferred to support and sub. But then you were down to start for a majority of weeks, brought some of the most unhinged teams lying around your builder and for semis had us sweating the entire time LOL, yet in the end still pulled out an impressive record (and continuing to secure Pikachu's permanent spot in the VR). Thank you for playing all these weeks despite not intending to, and I hope that you will continue to return every year and surprise the pool.

E4 Flint - Predraft I noticed you didn't block out 7BH in your signups so I had interest in drafting you for strong 7BH support and HC slot, then I actually ended up getting you for super cheap. Then you were down to play and helped fill out the slot after catching up to the meta super quickly, and also provided a ton of support for the weeks you were around for, sorry I couldn't get you a HC game though. It was a pleasure teaming up with a goat. Bonus: "gen 7 bh players realizing that they couldve used jaboca berry to bypass pads 5 years after the meta ended" - anaconja, absolutely crazy innovation.

Nudepantsman - I enjoyed the positivity and enthusiasm you brought as well as the fun interesting strategic insights you brought up for a tier like HC. Definitely got some undesirable sets in some of the matches in the middle of the tour but it was great to see the bounce back and ending the undefeated player's streak. Thanks for finding the time too despite having family stuff, congrats and gl.

Nihilslave - The year is 2024, Nihilslave, disappointed in the SVBH meta and the number of bans the corrupt council has brought forth seeks a new meta to main, and what better meta than the meta with no restrictions and bans? Jokes aside I did not expect to be able to buy you for such a low price, and while you claimed you couldn't fully devote yourself you were still able to slot in when needed, including slotting into two different PH metas in the end! You didn't type much in the channels but I know you provided so much support and testing for our other goat 8BH player, and you were undoubtedly a key component in our dominating 8BH core.

Irpachuza - Sorry we could only get you one game despite you being an easily starter calibre player (for a low price too at that point!). Thanks for slotting in when npm needed to sit out.

SammyCe123 - I had you in a majority of my plans, as I knew that you were an incredible player and had prior BH experience, and notably it seemed like you built all your own teams which helps so much in understanding meta, so the plan was to draft you and have the other players and me provide support. Couldn't have turned out more wrong lol, as you were so enthusiastic and active throughout the entire tour despite having numerous other tours running concurrently, preparing your own slot and helping others. Your prep and plays every week were super on point and you easily deserve that best record in tour, cementing yourself as an incredible BH player. Would love to see more of BH Sammy in the future. Oh and sorry that I messed up the arrangement for a match with Ivar.

blahpy - Sorry that this tour probably did not go the way you wanted it go with some pretty unfortunate matchups but it was nice seeing you keep up and deliver a solid performance in w5, as well as being an active presence in the ph slots.

jb291 - You did not talk much but simply just delivered incredible results on a steal of a price tag. One of my most memorable moments this tour has to be in semis you posting the win out of nowhere while we were all focused on another game.

Amaranth - The Bo5 goat, I thoroughly enjoyed the confidence you had starting day 1 that carried throughout the tour. Your consistency in such a random tier, only stopped by consecutively abysmal matchups, is incredible and really just shows how rng isnt everything for hc.

realExcaliju - You got slotted in mid-tour and started claiming straight wins ending with a strong crucial win in the finals. Really enjoyed the enthusiasm in discussion during games. Congrats on the only perfect record (with more than 1 game), well deserved.

ghostlike - I knew that you are a talented player and despite not having a lot prior BH experience you were the main secondary 9BH player I wanted as I was sure you would be learn really fast. Sorry about not being able to offer as much support as I would've liked as you had some really novel and creative ideas in each of the weeks and its a shame you didn't get a win with some of the matchups being truly unfortunate. Hope to see you around in BH more in the future.

Jqlove - Despite being the last pick and a late draft it was only because we did not want other teams sniping you while they still had funds. I think that any doubt anyone might have in your playing capabilities are completely gone after your impressive run in what is probably the most competitive pool this tour. I loved the super orthodox sets you brought like Topsy QD Xern and Big Root Steela in a meta with rather high centralization around meta sets, and then have those sets be instrumental in the win. In addition, you provided key extensive testing and help for Nihil in the weeks you weren't starting which was incredibly clutch to have. Your success in 8BH also freed up Nihil to go become a PH main so very well done.

Additional shoutouts to

cscl - For being hugely clutch to offer Nihil teams for him to play in tiebreaks and teach him all the basics in such a short term even though you had a busy week. Also appreciated the support and insights for aerobee in finals. It was a shame we didn't actually end up drafting you.

NToTheN - For helping with testing PH ever since like week 1. Your game commentaries are also genuinely some of the funniest and most enjoyable content I've watched.

Treeko928 - For helping a lot around the bh channels in the final weeks (way more useful than me!).

baconeatinassassin byulharang Glory RichardMillePlain TheCreatorOfBullsht TTTech and any others I missed for hanging around throughout the tour. Glory you get called out for betraying us in playoffs though.

Test Rex BoingK - For making this all happen, not to mention making it such a great experience and huge success. Test Rex for having the motivation to actually push forward and coordinate all this and boingk for supporting Rex with your hosting experience. This all could not have happened without you two and I can imagine the effort in organizing such a large tour involving three different communities.

And lastly s/o to all the other managers and players that all collectively helped this happen with the scale and success that it had. Hopefully the next iteration will be even better. I will definitely try to be back for next year if availability allows.

No Team Dump because seriously did you expect me to have built any teams?

Hello hackmons enjoyers!
I have concluded the survey for the post-HPL feedback, and want to get back to you with the results.

I want to thank eveyone that has voted in this survey!

First of all:
1730028799393.png

As we can see we have had 67 answers, of which 94% (63) come from HPL players/managers and 6% (4) come from outside spectators (I have confirmed that all votes from outside spectators have enough "credit" to have an informed opinon).
67 votes is a very good amount to get accurate data from the playerbase, so I am very happy to have had this amount of engagement.
Lets do a breakdown question by question.

First question (What tier(s) did you play in or support during HPL?):

Note: This graphic is edited, because at the start I posted the poll with a typo (ORAS PH was wrongly clasified as gen 7) and when I corrected it google forms ordered it as if it was a diferent answer.
Proof of unedited graphic:

Well in this Graphic we can see that it is somewhat close to a X players by slot in HPL, so nothing out of scope, the numbers are sort of as expected. One big outliner is that we have had very few votes from Gen 9 HC players.

Next row of questions (The Enjoyment/Competitiveness of each tier). I will break down into tier-specific spoilers for the sake of post cleanliness.

Lets go in order:
Enjoyment:

Conclusions from Enjoyment/Competitiveness:

Next question (If you could choose, which slots would you like to see come back in a future instance of HPL?):
1730036804884.png

Note: This graphic is edited, because at the start I posted the poll with a typo (ORAS PH was wrongly clasified as gen 7) and when I corrected it google forms ordered it as if it was a diferent answer.
Proof of unedited graphic:
1730036854508.png
In this graphic we can see a overall average and almost equal amount of "want it to come back" for BH and PH, while the HC slots have a smaller average percentage of roughly 20% less. This could be for a number of factors, but main sentiment is probably one I will expand in later questions.

Next question (What slots/metas do you think would have big engament/interest that we overlooked during this instance of HPL? Put as many as you want, separate each one by a ";"):
(No one fucking separated each meta by a ";" only like 3 people ;-;)
Format will be meta answered - times mentioned:

· National Dex BH - 11
· Retro Balanced Hackmons (gen 5 and 6) - 6
· BHUU - 5
· Retro Pure Hackmons (gen 2, 3, 4 ,5) - 4
· SV Broken Cup - 3
· National Dex BH (gen 8) - 2
· SV Balanced Hackmons suspect slot - 2
· SV Custom Game - 1
· More Balanced Hackmons - 1
· Balanced Createmons - 1
· PHUU - 1
· Super Staff Bros - 1
· Banned Hackmons (?) - 1
· Final Destination (?) - 1
· Pure Hackmons (gen 8) - 1
· Doubles Hackmons Cup - 1

Conclusion from these answers: National Dex BH has a very keen public that wants to see it in, Retro BH metas and BHUU following close behind. For next HPL I would love both the inclusion of NatDex BH and BHUU if there is enough playerbase, we will try to make a room for them. Reto BH metas may be a bit harder to fit, but if interest is high enough we can think something up.
In regards of PH, there have been several mentions of Retro PH metas, which would be a cool addition if the playerbase is big enough.
In regards of randomized metas, Broken Cup is a notable case with 3 votes, but it is very unlikely that it may get added.

Next question: (Mainly for PH players) As it has been very common for PH players to gentleman to Bo3 instead of default Bo1 during the entirety of this tour, do you think for a future instance of HPL PH slots should be default Bo3 (instead of current Bo1) due to the way the meta works:
1730045526754.png

For the ones that voted yes and other there have been several mentions that PH gen 7 may be more prone to need Bo3 but gen 6 PH is fine. Regardless, these votes are not one-sided enough to justify switching the default to Bo3.

Next question: Any other comments or suggestions in general regarding HPL? Feel free to be as detailed as you want, your answer will be private.
Most notable answers were:
1. Several mentions of great hosting by me and Boingk (thanks )
2. Improving the activity call process (agreed, we will smooth it out for next HPL)
3. Two big opinion explorations (one from a HC main, another from a non-HC main) about randomized metas not having much of a place in the tour. This seems to have been a somewhat extended feeling between players, added on top that while BH and PH players have interacted / tried each other metas during the tour, HC players didnt mix themselves up much and kept within their slots. This has left a feeling of "two different tours being played at once".
Personally, I am unsure about what route to take here, but one thing I have considered is to propose myself to host an independent HC tournament is there is enough interest (and if it doesnt already exist).
4. An answer explaining that HC does have a place in HPL as they are fun to play and watch and would like to see them in a future instance.
5. Several people mentioning they didnt expect the tour to be as fun as it came out as (Im glad)
6. Including retro generations BH and PH as a multi tier slot, witha weekly default. If players cant agree to play one of the retro tiers, they play the default.
7. "Never ever include gen9PH"
8. 10 slots too much

Next question: Would you like to take part on a future instance of HPL? (this is mainly done to check playerbase aviability)
1730048329499.png

A lot of Yes answers, and also I am happy to say that all of the "maybe" answers stated that it was either due to schedule aviability or general loss of interest in the metas, not a problem with a tour itself.

Opinons from experienced HC and PH players about the tour:
Ftr through my time in the OM community I've seen on multiple accounts from people who've played both PH and BH that they believe PH is healthier than BH in certain generations (Gen 6).
I believe PH is voted more fun because the game happens to work itself out while having a wide variety of tactics to offer that are more enjoyable for people to use overall.
Balanced Hackmons very notoriously has a history of driving people away due to tiering making the meta so much more passive, to the point where it frequently relies on trapping moves and even ludicrously low base power moves regularly find a niche because of PP stall
and all the insanely bulky stuff or potentially unhealthy strats for a passive meta like anchor shot trapping doesn't get checked out
As for PH uh.
The bottom part of this post https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/old-gen-hackmons-megathread.3649618/page-16#post-9810888 I feel still mostly holds up.
Although I've grown to fully embrace it by now and the meta has honestly gotten way better than it was back in Sept 2023, so perhaps a lot of this post is outdated .
Gen 7 still should have a Battle of 3 though due to the sheer variety of powerful gimmicks making it hard to prep for everything and making the game more mu influence.
But now I realize Gen 6 could use the same as well because Dark Void is vile however I think there are ways to handle Dark Void that are unexplored and haven't been used in the tournament.
-Ransei

Alright I think these (results are very consistent with my thoughts on how hc went this season, overall most people enjoyed it and I think most people even realized how competitive it can be.
And yet, there’s a disconnect when it comes to wanting it to come back next season, less than 50% of surveyed think it should come back - and we know that’s not because it isn’t enjoyable or competitive.
So the logical reason is that it doesn’t fit very well.
As much as I love HC, I'm not sure the format really fits in all that well with the teambuilder tiers that make up the bulk of the event. There's a real divide between the two communities which is fine, but watching how much work the BH/PH crew put into their matches every week just to have 2 tiers per week decided on a more randoms basis seemed a little off. I'd probably only do 1 tier in the future, either current gen HC or Broken Cup
-Nudepantsman

My personal takes:
I enjoyed hosting the tour a lot and would like to do it again in the future. I think it has had a positive influence and result with all the comunities involved. Also, hosting has let me enjoy the tour to its fullest without having to commit time to teambuilding as I have a lot to study. I am very thankful to all players and would love to see them back.
On the HC topic, I mention again I would be willing to try to talk with leadership to set up a HC big team tour if there isnt a pre-existing one. If there are enough players and interest I think it could be a very good endeavour.
For the next HPL I would like to see the inclusion of NatDex and BHUU and I think it should be top of the list, alogside with other PH metas that werent explored during this tour (Retro PH metas seem to have insterest). For next HPL I will try to contact council and players of PH to sort out what metas would be best.
Thanks a lot for your time, see you around.
Also thanks a lot Chessking345 for helping me with wording and grammar, Ransei for helping me by writing his thought on PH meta, and Nudepantsman for developing his thoughts and opinions in regards to the HC meta.
-Test Rex

putting teams in here rather than meta thread because i played multiple metas etc etc

IMPORT ALL https://pokepast.es/2bcd838755e94003
i put all my teams in a folder, use backup/restore to copy them all from there, run the following python code, and paste the teams into the console. first wrote this code several years ago but i haven't bothered to post it here until now
Code:
def import_runner():
    running = True
    while running:
        lines = []
        x = True
        monon = 1
        while x:
            line = input()
            if line and line[0] != '=':
                lines.append(line)
            if line and line.find("@") > -1:
                monon += 1

i've been putting off making this post for some time now because this truly was my worst team tour experience on this site. my team consisted of some of my best friends on the site as well as some super cool ph/hc players that im glad i got to know, so letting them down not just once but twice in finals amidst terrible mental states and the game truly not giving me a break was genuinely awful and made me want to get my mind on literally anything else, which is what i did for the next several weeks.

saying this after still going 5-3 might sound a little dramatic but i genuinely did want to leave this place on the best possible note. i guess it was a pipe dream to begin with--when you detach yourself from a place, there will inevitably be points where part of you is really upset that you don't have the same energy in that place as you used to. and this isn't really a contradiction that can be quieted down; if the community is very central to you then there will be some weird things that happen, though i think this was an exceptional case. at any rate, i'm glad it's all over; i do have better things to do with my time.

brought vs sevag. i was pretty scared of facing him w1, cause he was definitely the bh7 player i'd fought the most after the gen ended. i didn't have a lot of new gen 7 teams prepped before the tournament (besides one that you'll see later), and i felt that if i built in my more modern style then he'd catch onto what i was up to and know how to punish it. it's for this reason that i brought crusher, one of my much older teams. changed scarf bliss to evio chans because scarf imp is very fake in no smash meta. game was extremely fake, it felt like nothing interesting could have happened in it

brought w2 vs jasprose. jasp is an extreme boomer so i thought i could just bring something more modern that had proven itself to be relatively consistent, and this team definitely seemed to fulfill that. i was still comfortable with the regenvest ogre + prank gira structure just because regenvest ogre was essentially the only gar counter in the meta that i thought was real (we have shuriken into espeed xern for electrify). agilitydon is funny, the idea with that guy is that you can imposter proof without running sap and getting your recovery blocked by bounce dragons. pix xern is just rly good in general & is hugely underrated in gen 7

brought this w3 vs anaconja g1. had been meaning to try triage venu with an actual imposter proofer cause the grass/water/ice coverage rly isn't bad. i was hoping i'd run into mmx/regi/xern/shed as the rocker which mimikyu beats but instead it was moldy ogre spiky shield xern and my guys just weren't getting it done. needed to have hazards to make progress.

brought vs anaconja g2. sub glare pass is that good shit and i thought regen venoshock gar could easily work its way through any would-be poison heal counters, forcing in terrible bouncers and defensive guys. of course instead we run into fucking ph subpass zyg and get into an insane mirror match that ultimately goes my way. again shadow sneak dialga is for electrify and prio is always nice to pick off low hp mmys and stuff.

w4 vs skylake here, i don't have the exact paste used in the actual game on this computer but i've recreated it to the best of my ability. anyway, skylake had also been bringing boomer shit so i thought i could use the same strat as vs jasp where i brought a schizophrenic anti-meta team and cleaned shop positionally. the soundproof ceus looks incredibly stupid, obviously perish trap isn't actually good, but it does a good enough job deterring qd demons. original ver of the team had xern>gira but i wanted to be more secure into mmx, tho in practice that change probably made the team worse. anyway skylake did bring boomer shit and i countered his diancie with soundproof ceus, spinblocked him, ran over the phoenix, and collected lunch money etc etc

brought w5 vs onyx here. this is a tale of a fictional girl and her pokemon team, sealed far, far away in 2018. the girl used a very mobile style where she would switch out her pokemon very quickly, giving the illusion that the opponent was facing one unified constantly-strengthening creature rather than six. but each year buried away in a forgotten world made her more and more angry, and when she was eventually offered the chance to breathe, she fought only with vindictiveness. her old playing style was retained, but with the addition of incapacitating attacks meant to slow down the opponent. it wasn't enough for her to win, with her prized, omni-boosted, unstoppable normal-type; her opponents had to lose, falling deeper into dread with each wretched full paralysis. in the end, she got exactly what she wanted, of course at the expense of all my future fucking tour games. fuck this blood magic shit and fuck mons i need to defeat the opps in real life

brought playoffs vs skylake here. by this point in the tour, skylake had actually learned how to build offense (from an unknown individual), so i wanted to bring something more conservative and decided to try black lotus. basically what happened here was he brought unset knock pdon (beats absolutely nothing except ph no shield gira) and crit me immediately thru reflect and i died & lost after that because what the fuck do you do after that. of course doesn't help that i also ran into regenvest spectral magearna to beat lele, but also bringing something so triage-weak in the first place was my fault

finals vs qt here. basically what happens is i build the coolest and best and most evil team of all time, load into the 1 poison type in the game, do stupid shit early game vs the trick etern for no reason, miss my 90% moves, don't catch melo or garde with the syringe, lose my chans to a speed tie that qt went for for no reason, STILL have a good position, continue playing like shit and eventually lose to gimmick take heart spam shit. genuinely soul crushing game. shoutouts syringe though this team is Truly wretched, if you don't hit a vein the first time you recycle and try again until it works (Do not do this in real life)

we decided to play out the 3rd game of the series here. this ultra necrozma was an unused idea from ompl and i think it is the best ultra set, psychic noise is just really fucking good. i dont remember much about this game because i was mostly just not giving a shit after the previous 2 and this one didnt matter anyway, i remember that i wasnt able to spinblock shit because i had lunala into spinner tinglu, not that that mattered either because qt brought 3 spinners rather than running any setup control or anything. tiresome

Hello hackmons enjoyers!
I have concluded the survey for the post-HPL feedback, and want to get back to you with the results.

I want to thank eveyone that has voted in this survey!

First of all:
View attachment 682141
As we can see we have had 67 answers, of which 94% (63) come from HPL players/managers and 6% (4) come from outside spectators (I have confirmed that all votes from outside spectators have enough "credit" to have an informed opinon).
67 votes is a very good amount to get accurate data from the playerbase, so I am very happy to have had this amount of engagement.
Lets do a breakdown question by question.

First question (What tier(s) did you play in or support during HPL?):
View attachment 682195

View attachment 682224
Note: This graphic is edited, because at the start I posted the poll with a typo (ORAS PH was wrongly clasified as gen 7) and when I corrected it google forms ordered it as if it was a diferent answer.
Proof of unedited graphic:

View attachment 682250

View attachment 682256
A lot of Yes answers, and also I am happy to say that all of the "maybe" answers stated that it was either due to schedule aviability or general loss of interest in the metas, not a problem with a tour itself.

Opinons from experienced HC and PH players about the tour:

-Ransei
