Hail Stall (Ubers)

Introduction:

Well, this is the team I’ve been using for the last couple of days. It had gotten me a cre of 1630 and #20 on the ladder (which isn’t very hard at all) on my first day of laddering with it. I could have probably gotten higher if I invested more time on laddering. This team does have some holes (read threat list) that I’d like to patch up, but without changing the whole concept of the team too much.

Team Building Process

After hearing about mien getting to the finals of a uber tour with a hail team a couple of times, I wanted to try it out too, and hopefully I might have as much success as him. So the first step was simple, I am going to start off with an Abomasnow.

Next, I decided to make this a stall team. So I needed something to set up Spikes/Tspikes and possibly Rapid Spin to aid Abomasnow live longer. So I choose Forretress as it can do all that and is almost a staple on most uber stall teams.

Now what’s a stall team without a spin blocker right? So I had to decide to choose between either Giritina or Giritina-o. After watching Deep Thought use a mono-attacking Giritina-o in a Uber tour I wanted to test it out. So I went with Giritina-o. But after using that set I noticed it wasn’t doing its job well enough, as Forretress is the only spinner in ubers and it would only set up more Entry Hazards. So I decided to change his set to the mix spin blocker set.

Well, after a lot of uber testing I realized that Giritina-o and Heatran make a great defensive combo. As they resist each other’s weaknesses perfectly (Giritina can come in on Fighting, Water, and Ground attacks aimed at Heatran, and Heatran can come in on Ghost, Dark, Ice, and Dragon attacks aimed at Giritina) and are both quite bulky. Also, I needed something to set up Stealth Rock and another Fire immunity. So Heatran was a perfect fit.

What’s a huge problem for most stall teams? DARKRAI! It usually means you have to run a Scarfer to revenge kill it after it puts something to sleep. So I choose to use Garchomp as my Scarfer and revenge killer for other pesky threats. It also serves as my late game cleaner after most counters are gone / weakened. Can also serve as a DD/SD Rayquaza check if at 100%.

Last spot was about to go to Groudon, but I didn’t want another weather changer, so I needed something else to counter most hard hitting physical attackers, such as Groudon, Rayquaza, and Garchomp. So what can counter these common threats? Defensive Mewtwo! This thing is seriously underrated. It out speeds all these threats and could cripple them all with a Will-O-Wisp.

Final out look of the team:

Closer look at the team:

Abomasnow (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 HP/4 SAtk/252 SDef
Sassy nature (+SDef, -Spd)
- Leech Seed
- Blizzard
- Wood Hammer
- Protect
---

To start off the team I lead with Abomasnow to start the Hail from the get go. It also makes a decent match up against most common leads in todays metagame. Usually Blizzard then switch to Forretress against Deoxys leads. Leech Seed Kyogre leads as they switch. Blizzard against Groudon leads. Protect and go to Heatran against Shaymin leads. Go to Heatran against Dialaga and set up Stealth Rock. LeadQuaza is a tricky lead, usually go to Heatran to take the Draco Meteor then Mewtwo to burn it or scare it away. He also serves as my Kyogre counter, but I have to watch out for Specs Kyogre since it 3HKO’s me with Water Spout or a 2HKO with Stealth Rock up.

EV’s and Moveset:
Ev’s are pretty simple, max out Hp and Sp.Def to take Kyogre’s Water Spout and other special attacks better. Blizzard for a strong STAB attack and hits those Dragons that are so common. Leech Seed because it’s the only type of recovery it could get. Protect to scout, and recover more health from Leech Seed/Leftovers and weaken Kyogre’s Water Spout. Finally, I chose Wood Hammer over Grass Knot because it hurts mono-attacking Kyogre even more.

Forretress (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP/4 Def/252 SDef
Careful nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Spikes
- Toxic Spikes
- Rapid Spin
- Payback
---

Forretress is what provides the team with the so ever needed Toxic Spikes that this team relies on so much. It helps stall out many common threats and spin support. How it works is, I predict a Blissey, Scizor, etc. switch in, send him out and set up a layer of Spikes or Rapid Spin. Also It’s initial switch in against the likes of CM Mewtwo, CM Lati@s, and CM Giritina, as it hits all of them with a super effective Payback.

EV’s and Moveset:
Max out Sp. Def to take hits from Palkia, Lati@s, and Giritina better. Payback for a move to hit them with for some respectable damage. Rapid Spin to aid Abomasnow live longer and take hits from SpecsOgre better. Now, what’s a stall team without entry hazards? Spikes and Tspikes are for obvious reasons.

Giratina-o @ Platinum Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 Atk/200 Spd/60 SAtk
Naive nature (+Spd, -SDef)
- Shadow Sneak
- Draco Meteor
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Dragon Claw
---

Giritina is my spin blocker and does a damn fine job at that. With its 3 immunities, 6 resistances, and impressive power and bulk make him the games best spin blocker. He also helps check Adamant SD Luke and Rayquaza, and the only thing with a priority move on my team, which is comes in handy for revenge killing weakened threats.

EV’s and Moveset:
The speed EV’s and Timid Nature let it out speed Adamant SD Luke and Rayquaza. With 4 extra EV’s on speed to out run other Giritinas. Dumped the rest into Sp. Attack for a stronger Draco Meteor. Attack Ev’s to deal more damage to Mewtwo and Lati@s, and a stronger priority. Also let me 2HKO Blissey with Dragon Claw. HP-Fire to prevent Forretress from doing anything, and so that Scizor doesn’t trap me.

Heatran (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP/52 Def/204 SDef
Calm nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Stealth Rock
- Flamethrower
- Toxic
- Roar
---

You may be thinking, WTF, Heatran on an ubers stall team? Well that in correct, with its many resists to most of the common attacking types in the Uber metagame, help it cause many switches that rack up Spikes and Stealth Rock damage. This makes him a perfect choice for a stall team. Also, with so many switches gives him the opportunity to set up Stealth Rock.

EV’s and Moveset:
I don’t actually remember what the defense EV’s are for, I just saw them posted in the Heatran discussion thread on the Ubers Sub-forum. The rest of the EV’s were put into HP and Sp. Defense to take hits better. Stealth Rock didn’t fit on anything else, so I decided to put it o Heatran and it worked amazingly. It gets a lot of opportunities to set it up. Since it already causes many switches, I decided to add Roar to cause even more and it has been performing quite well. Toxic for those annoying levitators.

Garchomp (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sand Veil
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spd
Jolly nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw
- Outrage
- Toxic
---

Revenge killers are almost an essential for most stall teams now a day. They need something fast to revenge kill Darkrai and other threats. Most people use a Palkia as it is a good switch in for Choice Specs Kyogre. But I didn’t really like him for this team, because it simply didn’t live long enough. I always found it fainting early on in a match leaving me quite weak to some things. Also, Garchomp has enough bulk to survive Rayquaza’s ExtremSpeed which comes in handy.

EV’s and Moveset:
Max out speed to out speed scarf Palkia. Attack to cause more damage and help with a late game sweep. Earthquake to hit those steel types for super effective damage. Dragon Claw so I don’t have to get locked in on Outrage. Toxic is mostly just a filler, I’m considering switching to Stone Edge so that I can hit Ho-Oh. Finally, Outrage for the late game clean up.

Mewtwo @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP/224 Def/32 Spd
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Taunt
- Will-o-wisp
- Recover
- Light Screen
---

Aww defensive Mewtwo, so underrated. With the combination of Light Screen and Will-o-Wisp (in case Tspikes didn’t get laid down) make him very difficult to take down (unless a crit occurs). I’ve been down 5-1 before until this showed up, set up a Light Screen, and continues to stall out the rest of my opponent team completely.

EV’s and Moveset:
The speed EV’s let me out run +max speed Garchomp. Put the rest in HP and Defense to maximize my defensive capabilities. Taunt to prevent statues and stop things from setting up. Will-o-Wisp for Rayquaza or incase I didn’t get Toxic Spikes up. And finally, Recover so that I could keep on stalling stuff out.

Conclusion:

Well there you have it. If you have any questions or comments feel free to ask them. Just like most stall teams, Rayquaza is a huge problem, and not just a specific threat, but all of them. Being immune to Toxic Spikes and Hail make him a hard to take down. My best bet is for Mewtwo to burn him. Overall, I am very satisfied on how the team turned out. I would much appreciate any rates/criticism, thank you for anyone who read this!

Threat list:

Darkrai:
- Nasty Plot: Usually let Forretress or Heatran take the sleep, then switch Garchomp to revenge kill it.
- Lead: Let Abomasnow / Forretress take the sleep then act accordingly to their switch.

Deoxys – S
- Lead: Blizzard with Abomasnow then switch Forretress to spin their Spikes/Stealth Rock

Deoxys – A
- Life Orb Sweep: This can be a problem since it has the ability to hit my entire team for super effective damage, but it suffers from move slot syndrome. Usually switch in Giritina on Hp-Fire or Superpower, then 1HKO with Shadow Sneak. Garchomp can always revenge kill it if Giritina-o is gone. Toxic Spikes also take its toll against him.
- Lead: Switch in Giritina-o on the Stealth Rock the scare it out.

Dialage:
- Bulk Up: Mewtwo can come in Taunt + Will-o-Wisp then stall it ‘till it dies. Garchomp can kill it if it doesn’t have any boosts. Heatran can come in set up Stealth Rock then Roar it away. Forretress can also set up on it.
- Lead: Heatran walls it and sets up Stealth Rock. Garchomp can always revenge kill it.
- Mix: Switch Heatran on Draco Meteor then go to Mewtwo to burn it or set up a Light Screen. Garchomp cam still revenge kill it. If it’s weakened enough I could switch in Giritina on anything but Draco Meteor and KO it with Draco Meteor.
- Scarf: Not much of a problem, clever switching will lock it on a move and could possibly set up with Heatran / Forretress.

Garchomp:
- Scarf: If I predict a Dragon move go to Heatran / Forretress and set up. Mewtwo can come in on any moves. Giritina can come in on Earthquakes.
- SD: My Garchomp can revenge kill it. Mewtwo can come in on a SD and prey it don’t miss with Will-o-Wisp.

Giritina:
Great Wall: Set up with Forretress or Heatran. Mewtwo can Taunt it and Will-o-Wisp while it can’t do anything back. My Giritina can hit it hard with a Draco Meteor and Garchomp can too with Outrage.

Giritina-o:
- Mix Spin Blocker: This thing is tricky, but Heatran walls most of them since they usually don’t carry Earthquake. But if they I’m in trouble. I usually send out Garchomp after a surprise kill on my Heatran to revenge kill it. I also run more speed on my Giritina to out speed other ones to beat them to the Shadow Sneak or Draco Meteor. Garchomp can always revenge kill it too.
- Calm Mind: Depends on its move set. Forretress walls it and if it lacks Aura Sphere Heatran does too. Garchomp can revenge kill it if it doesn’t have a Substitute up.

Groudon:
- Rock Polish: Switch Mewtwo on the Rock Polish and Earthquake only does 54.3% - 64.2% so just keep on recovering while Toxic Spikes put it in KO range for Giritina’s Shadow Sneak.
- Support: Mewtwo can Taunt it and make it useless, Abomasnow resists Earthquake and can hit it with a strong Blizzard or Leech Seed. Forretress can also set up a layer of Spikes / Tspikes. Giritina can hit it with a powerful Draco Meteor.
- SD: A huge problem, but switch in Giritina on the SD and thanks to Toxic Spikes puts it in KO range for Draco Meteor. Garchomp can revenge kill it too. Toxic Spikes followed by a Shadow Sneak / Draco Meteor from Giritina are my best options against most Groudons sets.

Ho-Oh:
Physical Attack: Usually lack Earthquake and Heatran resists both his STAB attacks, so it makes a pretty good switch in. Steal Rock obviously hurt him so hope it’s up. Garchomp can revenge kill it.

Kyogre:
- Choice Specs: Such a pain, switch in Abamosnow on the Water Spout, then Protect to weaken its power a bit, followed by a Leech Seed to heal myself then protect again. Toxic Spikes again help out a lot so hope they are up. Also hope that Stealth Rock isn’t up or else it’s 2HKO’d by Water Spout. Garchomp and Giritina can revenge kill it too.
- Choice Scarf: Not as troublesome as the Specs version, Obomasnow can take anything that’s thrown at him, and hit it with a strong Wood Hammer or Leech Seed. Heatran and Forretress can come in on Ice Beam and set up.
- Boosting Tank: Abomasnoiw walls it all day, and can Leech Seed or Wood Hammer to death.

Latios:
- Calm Mind: Heatran walls it and can set up Stealth Rock, Toxic, and Roar it away. Giritina can Shadow Sneak it to death. Garchomp can revenge kill it.

Latias:
- Same as Latios

Lugia:
- Great Wall: Forretress sets up on it and so does Heatran and can toxic it.

Manaphy:
- Tail Glow Sweeper: Abomasnow Leech Seeds it and then Wood Hammer.

Mew:
- Lead: Blizzard with Abomasnow as they Stealth Rock then go to Forretress as they U-turn to spin away their rocks.
- Lead Baton Pass: just keep on Blizzarding it until it passes.

Mewtwo:
- CM: Forretress hits it with payback. Giritina can come in on a Aura Sphere and hit it with a Shadow Sneak. Garchomp can revenge kill it. Toxic Spikes also help wear it down.
- Defensive: Toxic Spikes really hurt it. Lure it on using Will-o-Wisp then go to Heatran.

Palkia:
- Choice Scarf: Go to Heatran / Forretress on Spacial Rend, and Abomasnow on for Surfs.
- Mix Attackers: Toxic Spikes + Hail really help with clever switching.

Rayquaza:
- SD: Go to Mewtwo on the SD then burn it. Taunt it next so it doesn’t get anymore boosts then keep on Recovering. Garchomp can take a +2 ExtremeSpeed if at 100% as a last resort. Giritina can come in if they are Adamant.
- DD: Garchomp can revenge kill it. Mewtwo can lock it into Outrage then Heatran can take care of it. Really big problem.
- LeadQuaza: Go to Heatran to take the Draco Meteor / Flamethrower, Toxic it while it Brick Breaks, then just keep on switching. Annoying lead that it getting pretty popular.

Shaymin-S:
- Scarf Lead: Go to Heatran and set up Stealth Rock while they Air Slash, if I predict a Seed Flare or Earthpower go to Abomasnow.
- Sub Seed: Go to Heatran if they don’t have Earthpower, if they do I’ll usually sacc something and have to revenge kill it.

Wobbufett:
- Oh, no! It’s Wobbufett!: LOL

Non Uber Threats:

Blissey:
- Wall: Set up with Heatran and Forretress, Taunt it with Mewtwo, Dragon Claw 2HKO’s her with Giritina,

Lucario:
- SD: Giritina out speeds and takes it out with HP-Fire. Garchomp can Survive a +2 ExtremeSpeed and hit it back with a Earthquake.

Ludicolo:
- Abomasnow changes the weather and resists surf and is immune to Leach Seed so it makes a perfect switch in.

Ninjask:
- Lead Pass: Go to Heatran, set up Stealth Rock then Roar it away.

Scizor:
- Trapper: If they try to trap Mewtwo they would in for a surprise WoW. Go to Heatran or Forretress to take a Bullet Punch or U-turn. Giritina for Super Power and hit it with a Hp-Fire.

Tyranitar:
- Choice: Go to Forretress to set up. Garchomp can revenge kill it.

Looks like a solid team. My only concern is you have 4 recover less Pokemon and nothing to help them. This makes it easier for opposing stall to outlast you and potent offense teams to break you. I would recommend maybe a Wish Blissey over one of your guys, though nothing really looks replaceable.

EV’s and Moveset:
I don’t actually remember what the defense EV’s are for, I just saw them posted in the Heatran discussion thread on the Ubers Sub-forum.

These are rest talk OU tran EV's, the defense is pretty useless. Maybe try 244 Sp Def and the remaining points into Speed or Special Attack.

Cool team.

Hey, nice team, good to see something different in Ubers teams. However, I can see that Ho-oh and TauntCM and Life Orb Mewtwo could cause you problems. Ho-oh can come in one pretty much every one of your Pokemon apart from Garchomp and Giratina-O, Sub up and wreak havoc. The most you can do is Roar it out with Heatran, but you aren't going to be able to take repeated Brave Birds to the face. I would definitely suggest Stone Edge on Garchomp, and Outrage on Giratina-O to deal with him. TauntCM Mewtwo can be trouble if Forretress is lower on health, and Life Orb Mewtwo has the potential of OHKOing or 2HKOing every one of your Pokemon. To solve this problem, I would suggest changing Heatran to Blissey.

Blissey @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP/252 Def/252 SpD
Nature: Calm
-Wish
-Protect
-Seismic Toss
-Toxic/Ice Beam

She can give you Wish support and beats pretty much all special attackers that can't go mixed. Toxic can wear down Palkia and stuff while Ice Beam makes sure Rayquaza and Garchomp doesn't set up on you.

I would also suggest replacing Spikes with Explosion on Forretress, simply because I am paranoid about things setting up on it. It doesn't really matter anyway.

Hope I helped, good luck.

@AM - All right, I'm going to change Heatran's EV spread to take hits better.

@shrang - Mewtwo is no problem at all. Forretress 2HKO's it with Payback, Giritina can come in on a Aura Sphere and hit it with a Shadow Sneak for 63.8% - 75.1%. Toxic Spikes + Hail also hurt him a bit. As the Stone Edge suggestion goes, I am gonna switch from Toxic. I am going to test Blissey over Heatran, as Ace Matador said, 4 pokemon don't have recovery so Wish support would really benefit my team. But that does leave me a bit Ho-Oh weak...

I second Blissey > Heatran. I was going to suggest running an extra 4 spe on Giratina to outspeed opposing Giratina but I see you already did that, so instead I'm going to suggest replacing WoW on Mewtwo with Reflect, and changing Light Screen to Ice Beam.

With Blissey as a more study special wall the need for Light Screen is needed much less. However, if Toxic Spikes are down, Garchomp will always beat your Mewtwo. If you're relying on a 75% accuracy move to beat Garchomp, you might as well take the safer route and stick to Ice Beam.

Edit: Ho-oh run Earthquake anyway, so Heatran wouldn't stand a chance.

I question the use of Giratina-O in hail stall but hey, seems like a pretty good team. I think that Will-o-Wisp Mewtwo makes any team good though, so that isn't saying much :p
