Hello! If you’re seeing this, welcome to my art thread! I’m Haste Inky, and I’m one of the current room owners of The Art Gallery on showdown. Ironically though, I’d consider myself fairly new at art, still kinda trying to find my “groove” or my “style” if you know what I mean. Either way, I’ve been having fun with it, am looking to improve and want to continue doing it!
I mainly draw miscellaneous characters from video games, not just Pokémon. I’d also like to share and log some of my personal experiences with my stuff too.
Sharla from Xenoblade Chronicles!
I believe this was the first one that I started and actually finished making. I definitely spent waaay too much time agonizing over every detail and making sure everything was perfect, I must have redrawn her like at least 3 times, with her rifle in particular giving me a lot of trouble (I do not want to admit how long this took). DO NOT do what I did here if you’re just starting out btw, it’s a real motivation killer and not a good way to learn. Because of that, I believe this is the only one I’ve done where I don’t have any of the older sketches unfortunately. This and a few other habits are something that I’ve found that I’ve phased out of, and I’m super glad about that at least!
The environment is pretty basic, I heavily referenced a zoomed in screenshot of Gaur Plain and just made the most basic rocks and cliffs imaginable. While I think it still looks decent for something that’s not meant to be the focus, this was also a part that took a ridiculous amount of time to “perfect”. Once again, don’t do this, it’s the artist equivalent of Sisyphus rolling the boulder up the hill. I still think the grass and the rock in the front look pretty nice.
Von Kaiser from Punch-Out!!
This time I remember wanting to do a sort of muscly character. I don’t really remember why I chose Von Kaiser though, maybe I thought he was an easier choice for this because he’s not like, shredded? It wasn’t by the way! I remember feeling like his proportions were a bit wackier than I expected. Overall, I just find it to be a kind of stiff and uninteresting now, It doesn’t really look like he’s feeling anything. I don’t really have much to say on the background either.
Shy Guy from Super Mario!
With how long the last 2 that I did took, I just wanted to try something simpler by this point, and yeah it was pretty simple. It’s a Shy Guy, not really much else I have to say about it. It holds up fine enough.
I played around a bit more with the background if anything here, basing it off Super Mario Advance. I think it ended up a bit too vibrant though?
Machamp from Pokémon!
Pretty much straight up a traced Gen 2 sprite with heavily referenced Pokémon Masters models in the back. I was seriously debating on wether or not I should show this one, because this wasn’t meant to be anything serious. I meant to use this more as a sort of practice, and while tracing can be a great tool to understand how a specific subject works, I can’t help but feel bad looking at this one, even if I think the lighting looks kinda decent still.
Oh yeah, as for the trainers in the back, I included them because there was this big empty space behind Machamp, and I was just messing around with the idea, but then it looked really incomplete without them. The initial idea was meant to kind of like The Lion King thing like with Mufasa in the clouds, but then I came to the realization that I haven’t seen The Lion King in like 15 years (and it never occurred to me to look up that scene?). Would be interested to try this one again, because the execution is very heavily flawed.
Ayumi from Famicom Detective Club!
Probably my least favourite one so far, I think it’s her kinda awkward pose and especially the background throwing the whole thing off. I think you can kinda tell that I was trying for a fancier angle here with the background? Though it looks incredibly off and unpolished. I definitely remember Ayumi being fun to draw though, I would definitely be interested in revisiting this one again later.
Magolor from Kirby's Return to Dream Land!
Another really simple one. I believe this was when I tried using colours that weren’t just a dark shade of another colour to shade, and I like how that looks, it feels like it makes it pop more. There is one detail that I did not consider and absolutely cannot overlook anymore though. For the pose I meant for Magolor to do a kind of “sword on shoulder” pose which I thought sounded like a cool concept, but then I realized way too late that he doesn’t have shoulders! Shoot!
Anna from Fire Emblem Awakening!
Oooh yeah! I think it was this one where I was finally like “Oh I might be on to something with this, I wanna do more like this”! It’s not perfect of course, I think her hands and face look a little off, but I really really like the pose. I’m not sure about any of the other Fire Emblem games, but in Awakening I noticed she kind of has this super interesting looking backhand sword style through her animations. Also, with her holding her sword behind her back here, it’s almost like she’s hiding it, and acting all unassuming about it. This was not intentional, but I’m pretty sure it’s still in character! Oh yeah, I really liked her outfit, and especially her cape were really fun to draw. This one was a blast!
Penny from WarioWare!
I remember this one being a blast too! Really liked the idea of using her more unique appearance with her water jetpack thing from WarioWare: Get It Together. I think Penny herself could have been in a less stiff pose, and I think something looks a bit off about her face? Maybe that it looks a bit too shiny? I’m not super sure but other than that I still kinda like this one!
Ryuji from Persona 5!
I’ve never played Persona 5 but I thought Ryuji’s design was cool! Such a boring pose for a character with animations and poses as expressive as his though… If I were to change one thing about it, it would 100% be that.
The background is from his showtime animation from Persona 5 Royal, specifically the one he does with Makoto. I liked the idea of doing a piece with sunset lighting that wasn’t the Machamp one, but I definitely think the lighting and shading could have been more exaggerated and darker.
Geo Stelar from Mega Man Star Force!
Never played Mega Man Star Force either! I think I have similar problems with this one as I do with Ryuji in retrospect, in that it’s just such a stiff pose and not super interesting (also his boot things are way too small!), I like how his face and helmet turned out at least. I think it was around this time that I really felt like I wasn’t making things super interesting in general.
Backgrounds pretty simple, don’t really have much to comment on there. It’s specifically based on how the combat looks in Mega Man Star Force, and it didn’t take very long from what I recall.
That’s it for now! I hope I didn’t come across as too negative towards my own work. I’m just definitely interested in improving, and these were the first 10 that I ended up finishing. I still have plenty of room to grow, and I hope you look forward to what else I have to show in the future. I will post the rest of what I currently have later.
