Haunter [QC 2/3]

Status
Not open for further replies.
[OVERVIEW]
Haunter is a decent ghost-type in NU, have a interesting ofensive type with a good coverage-moves like Dazzling Gleam. The SubSplit set is one of the best stallbreakers in the tier due to its uniques resistances and immunities and that it can set up on common defensive Pokemon such as Mega Audino, Type: Null, Pyukumuku and Venusaur. Haunter carves its niche over other Ghost-types such as Rotom and Mismagius thanks to Haunter's high base 115 special attack and its great secondary typing let it take on typical ghost answers such as Mega Audino, Sneasel and Incineroar. It also makes good use of Substitute thanks to its access to moves such as Disable, which can help it against Pursuit trappers such as Sneasel. Haunter has a wide support movepool including Pain Split, Destiny Bond and Trick. However, Haunter has a terrible bulk, being quite easy to break, and its weakness to Pursuit makes it a liability in matchups against Pokemon such as Sneasel and Pursuit Houndoom users, and that it's moves aren't great to be choice-locked into due to immunities and letting in dangerous things like Omastar and SD Incineroar.

Moves
========

Sludge Wave is Haunter’s strongest move and allows it to revenge kill Grass-types like Whimsicott and Sceptile. Shadow Ball is a good spammable STAB and hits Psychic and Ghost-types such as Sigilyph, Medicham and Rotom for super effective damage. Dazzling Gleam makes it able to Haunter hits Dark-types such Guzzlord and Sneasel, and revenge kill Scrafty for super effective damage. Destiny Bond lets Haunter allows Haunter to trade a KO with a threat it can't beat otherwise. Trick enables Haunter to cripple Pokemon what give trouble, such Golbat and Rhydon.
Set Details
========

Max Speed with a Timid Nature and Choice Scarf enables Haunter to outspeed most threats in the meta, such as Sneasel, Scrafty at +2, Vivillon at +1 and slower Scarf users such as Rotom and Vanilluxe. Max EVs in Special Attack are used to increase Haunter's power allowing it to revenge kill threats more easily. Levitate is the only option, it gives Haunter an useful Ground-type immunity.

Usage Tips
========

Haunter can switch only into things such as Sceptile Giga Drain and Whimsicott Energy Ball or Moonblast, its just you give about half HP, but in a lot of games having that offensive switch can be worth it. Use Choice Scarf Haunter set to revenge kill threats like Whimsicott, Vivillon after one Quiver Dance or Scrafty at +2 if it is running Dazzling Gleam. Only use Destiny Bond if Haunter is useless in the match, and on situations where Haunter will be KOed, otherwise it becomes a liability as Haunter will end up losing momentum. Destiny Bond can be used if its your only way to kill the enemy sweeper. Use Trick to cripple annoying Pokemon to Haunter, such Golbat and Rhydon, and lock an opponent into a move for a teammate to set up on.

Team Options
========

Choice Scarf Haunter should be used as a revenge killer or cleaner, so wallbreakers such as Medicham, Guzzlord and Vanilluxe are appreciated by Haunter, because they can help Haunter weakening opponent's team and sweep on late game. Hazard Setters like Steelix, Piloswine and Omastar appreciate Haunter's ability to spinblock, and in return, gives a cheap damage, making more easier to win on late game. Whimsicott is a great Haunter's teammate, because is an ofensive check of Dark-types such as Guzzlord, Sneasel and Scrafty. Other Fairy-types like Mega Audino, Aromatisse and Diancie are good partners for the same reason. Pokémon such as Steelix and Hariyama are appreciated by Haunter, for having the ability to checks Pursuit trappers like Sneasel. Setup Sweepers like Incineroar, Toxicroak and Klinklang loves Haunter tricking Choice Scarf into a wall, who can give free setup for them.

Moves

Substitute can prevents to be pursuit trapped by Sneasel, and create opportunities for Haunter to fire off free attacks and abuse Pain Split. Shadow Ball is a good spammable STAB and allows hits Psychic-types such Slowking, Medicham for super effective damage, and Poison-types like Golbat and Garbodor with neutral damage. Sludge Wave is Haunter’s strongest move and provides a good coverage with Shadow Ball. Pain Split makes the SubSplit combination, allowing Haunter to stay healthy on match, and have synergy with Life Orb.

Set Details
========

Life Orb gives more damage output to Haunter, and the recoil allows it recover more HP with Pain Split. 252 EVs in Special Attack and Speed make Haunter maximizes Haunter's speed and power. Timid allows Haunter to speed tie with non-Choice Scarf Houndoom and outspeed Pokemon such as Vivillon and Klinklang.

Usage Tips
========

Substitute can be used for scout a opponent play, win on Sucker Punch mind games or preventing be pursuit trapped. You can use Substitute on a expected switch, recovery-move or resisted hits from opponent. When Haunter’s HP is low, for Substitute, use Pain Split to recover the HP in possible predictes switches or when Substitute is active. Use Haunter to weaken the opponent's team in early or mid-game, it allows a teammate sweeps on late game more easier.

Team Options
========
Fighting-types such Scrafty and Hitmonlee are good Haunter's teammates because they can check Pursuit Trappers such Sneasel, and Haunter takes on enemy Fairy types very efficiently for them. In special Passimian is a great partner, for this set, because Passimian's checks like Slowbro and Aromatisse are KOed by Haunter, and in return, Passimian can use Knock Off on Golbat, kill Dark-types such Sneasel and Guzzlord and it can use U-turn to bring Haunter in safely. Stealth Rock setters like Steelix, Rhydon and Piloswine are greatly appreciated by Haunter because this forces a lot of switches, making more easier to weaken opponent's team. Fairy-types such Whimsicott, Aromatisse and Mega Audino can check Dark-types like Sneasel and Guzzlord, making good teammates.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Energy Ball can be used to hits Ground-types such Rhydon and Piloswine, but doesn’t offer much outside of that, and generally Dazzling Gleam. The combination Will-o-Wisp with Hex is a option to more damage, but it isn't a solid choice, because the opponent needs be with a negative status. Disable can be used in combination with Substitute, preventing the Pursuit Trap from Sneasel. The set 3 Attacks + Taunt with Shadow Ball, Sludge Wave, Dazzling Gleam and Taunt is an option, because it still somewhat notable for having a good matchup vs Stall. Ghostium Z is an option for a really strong once-time STAB. Poisonium Z can be used too, for it allows Haunter OHKOes Incineroar with minor chip.

Checks and Counters
==============

**Dark-types**: Pursuit Trappers like Sneasel and Houndoom are quite annoying to Haunter because every kill that Haunter does, this gives a free switch to him, running the risk of Haunter being trapped, however, they must be careful of Sludge Wave. Terrible Haunter’s bulky allows strongers priority-moves such as Sucker Punch from Absol.

**Faster Pokemon**: Due to Haunter’s fragility Choice Scarf users such as Houndoom, Braviary and Delphox can kill him very easy. Mismagius and Heliolisk outspeed non-Choice Scarf variants and in return KO with Shadow Ball.

**Bulky Pokemon**: Cryogonal can beat Haunter if doesn't take a hit on switchin. Guzzlord can take on it once time. Golbat can check Haunter, but it can cripple Golbat by using Trick, and consequently taking out his Eviolite.

Scarf should be the main set, not Taunt 3 atks which should be dropped competely.
Haunter @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave
- Dazzling Gleam
- Destiny Bond/ Trick

Remove AV Iincineroar from the trick usefulness part as its only a set low ladder players currently use, with most being SD + Z move which is actually really harmful to try and trick.

Remove Virizion from the analysis as its RU now

Don't list a ton of mons that are obvious it outspeed with a scarf like Whims, name more relevant scarfers or speed boosting mons.

Don't switch Haunter into attacks, even resisted ones, as its terrible bulk makes it very easy to KO.
You can re-word this to make sure you're only switching into resisted hits as a last resort. It CAN switch into things such as Sceptile Giga Drain, Whimsicott's Moonblast or Energy Ball, and Venu giga/ Sludge, its just you give about half HP. But in a lot of games having that offensive switch can be worth it.

Use Choice Scarf Haunter set to revenge kill threats like Virizion, Mismagius and Vivillon or Scrafty if it is running Dazzling Gleam.
Again, use more relevant examples. Listing one or two non scarfers or boosting mons is fine but it shouldn't be the bulk of this part.

Use Trick to cripple annoying Pokemon to Haunter, such Golbat, Rhydon, Assault Vest Incineroar and Magmortar.
Again much like AV Incin drop AV Magmortar as most are Z-move which causes trick to fail.

Substitute set should have LO as the main item. The idea is you're getting yourself low with sub + lo so you both damage and heal for more off Pain Split; Set name should be renamed to SubSplit.

Taunt should be dropped from the slashed options and Disable moved to OO.

Rewrite all the mentions of Sub letting you beat pursuit trappers without context. It only allows you to beat Pursuit if you're already behind a Sub, just spamming it in front of a Pursuit mon wont help you especially when they're faster like Sneasel.

**Faster Pokemon**: Due to Haunter’s fragility faster Pokemon such Sigilyph, Dodrio and Heliolisk can kill him very easy. Heliolisk and Dodrio are immune to Shadow Ball, and can take 1 hit from Sludge Wave.
Use more relevant examples then Sigilyph and Dodrio.

**Bulky Pokemon**: Pokemon such Assault Vest Magmortar and Incineroar can tank some hits and OHKO in return. Golbat can check Haunter, but lost versus variants with Thunderbolt or Psychic.
I'm fine keeping AV Incinroar on here as it is a set you'll find on the ladder from time to time, but drop AV Magmortar as its seen 0 play since last gen. Tbolt and Psychic aren't even listed in OO so they shouldn't be brought up here.

After you've updated it, tag me and I'll look it over again . If it meets standards I'll give it a QC check.

Haunter is a decent ghost-type in NU, have a interesting ofensive type with a good coverage-moves like Dazzling Gleam, Psychic, Thunderbolt.
Psychic and tbolt aren't even listed in OO, so they should just be cut here.

Haunter carves its niche over other Ghost-types such as Rotom and Mismagius thanks to its great Special Attack, secondary STAB, and better coverage options, which enable it to hit Pokemon such as Incineroar, Houndoom and Mega Audino for more damage.
None of its sets really run the "better coverage" options, change instead for the unique sets it can run like having the ability to run subsplit instead.

It have utility moves too such Taunt, Disable and Destiny Bond.
Taunt should be removed.

Don't switch Haunter into attacks, even resisted ones, as its terrible bulk makes it very easy to KO.
This still needs to be fixed; see me last post.

move 3: Psychic / Dazzling Gleam
move 4: Taunt

evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
This all still needs to be removed. Taunt is awful on haunter, and LO 4 atks isn't a good set for as long as Sneasel is in the tier. Just drop this part and maybe mention LO 4 atks in OO.

Ghostium Z gives a stronger Ghost-type STAB to Haunter, and allows it to kill Golbat after Stealth Rock and Shadow Ball damage with Never Ending Nightmare.
Life Orb can be used instead Ghostium Z to boost Haunter's STAB consistently, however it also weakens Haunter, which combined with Substitute can be a problem
Ghostium Z isn't on the set anymore, so you'll need to replace this part with something relevant about subsplit. Maybe mention why you use Life Orb (more damage output, and leaves you at lower hp for stronger splits)

Use Taunt to prevent Golbat from recovering and sweepers like Scrafty and Toxicroak set-up, and Stealth Rock setters from setting them up, or defoggers from removing them.
Just crtl f and find any mentions of Taunt and remove them. Its not a viable move on Haunter.

Make these changes and i'll give it QC check 1/3.

* It also makes good use of Substitute thanks to its access to moves such as Disable, which can help it against Pursuit trappers such as Sneasel
* Despite all this, Mismagius's access to Nasty Plot, better Special Defense, and better Speed make it usually a better option. Emphasize Mismagius's Higher speed and NP, and Rotom's better defensive typing and Volt Switch.

Ok, changes are implemented, Sludge Wave is likely better, sorry, accidentally defaulted to bomb.

QC 2/3

Overview:
Haunter is a decent ghost-type in NU, have a interesting ofensive type with a good coverage-moves like Dazzling Gleam and Energy Ball.
  • Make sure that you aren't mentioning moves in the Overview that aren't on any of the main sets.
  • More emphasis on the Poison / Ghost Dual stab, that's what makes Haunter stand out.
Haunter has a wide support movepool including Disable and Destiny Bond.
  • Talk about Pain Split, Destiny Bond, and Trick instead.
Despite all this, Mismagius's access to Nasty Plot, better Special Defense, and better Speed, and Rotom have a better defensive typing and acess to Volt Switch making it usually a better option.
  • They dont really compete at all outside of having the same typing. I guess Scarf Rotom gives Scarf Haunter some competition, but Scarf Rotom is the inferior one of the two. Remove this point as well.
  • There should be a point about SubSplit Haunter being one of the best stallbreakers in the tier thanks to its unique resistances and immunities and that it can set up on common defensive Pokemon such as Mega Audino, Type: Null, Pyukumuku, and Venusaur.
  • The negatives are mainly being easily Pursuit trapped by Sneasel which makes it a liability, and that it's moves aren't great to be choice-locked into due to immunities and letting in dangerous things like Omastar, SD Incineroar, etc.
Scarf Set:
  • Dazzling Gleam should be Move 3.
  • Slash Trick behind Destiny Bond.
SubSplit Moves:
  • Substitute isn't for scouting, it's to create opportunities for Haunter to fire off free attacks and abuse Pain Split.
Checks & Counters:
  • The order should be Dark-types (You can talk about Sucker Punch here, and remove AV Incineroar, it's not a viable set) > Faster Pokemon > Bulky Pokemon (Include stuff like Diancie, Gigalith, Cryogonal, Golbat)
Make sure you edit some of the writing after you implement this to make some of your points clearer. Tag me once you've done all of this and I'll look over it again.

(mention diancie, it counters non-heavy slam variants of guzzlord.)

Other Options
=============

Energy Ball can be used to hits Ground-types such Rhydon and Piloswine, but doesn’t offer much outside of that, and generally Dazzling Gleam. (this sentence feels incomplete.) The combination Will-o-Wisp with Hex is a option to more damage, but it isn't a solid choice, because the opponent needs be with a negative status. (and thus is not always reliable.) Disable can be used in combination with Substitute, preventing the Pursuit Trap from Sneasel. (pursuit ohkos you even if you stay in. if you mean in combination with substitute, specify.) The set 3 Attacks + Taunt with Shadow Ball, Sludge Wave, Dazzling Gleam and Taunt is an option, because it still somewhat notable for having a good matchup vs Stall. Ghostium Z is an option for a really strong once-time STAB. Poisonium Z can be used too, for it allows Haunter OHKOes Incineroar with minor chip.

Checks and Counters
==============

**Dark-types**: Pursuit Trappers like Sneasel and Houndoom are quite annoying to Haunter because every kill that Haunter does, this gives a free switch to him, running the risk of Haunter being trapped, however, they must be careful of Sludge Wave. (mention that sneasel also outspeeds you and that houndoom speed ties with you.) Terrible Haunter’s bulky allows strongers priority-moves such as Sucker Punch from Absol. (incineroar has the bulk to take a hit from haunter well and ko it with darkest lariat.) (the way the last bit is worded makes it sound like it's a section about priority as a whole, make it more about sucker punch and mention other, more relevant users like toxicroak and houndoom. also be sure to mention that it can potentially play around sucker punch from slower pokemon with substitute + pain split as well as destiny bond.)

**Faster Pokemon**: Due to Haunter’s fragility Choice Scarf users such as Houndoom, Braviary and Delphox (replace with a more relevant choice scarf user, this one's fallen off quite a bit.) can kill him very easy. Mismagius outspeed non-Choice Scarf variants and in return KO with Shadow Ball. (mention some other naturally faster pokemon like heliolisk.)

**Bulky Pokemon**: Cryogonal can beat Haunter if doesn't take a hit on switchin. Guzzlord can take on it once time. Golbat can check Haunter, but it can cripple Golbat by using Trick, and consequently taking out his Eviolite. (stuff like silvally-steel, diancie, and gigalith need to be here.)
be sure to throw in mentions of stuff like gigalith and diancie as eternally mentioned before. also, make sure you check this before you send it to copyediting. aside from that, qc 3/3, gwork.

Hey so it looks like you did implement the third QC check but never updated the title. Given how long its been sitting here a lot of the information has become outdated. Please update the analysis to account for drops/rises and meta shifts then tag me when you're done and I'll look over the changes before we send it to GP.

Try to get it it done within the next few days.
