He who laughs last, laughs best: A Warstory

Frankly, I’ve wanted to write a warstory for a long time and have only been looking for an excuse to do it. I was laddering with a team I had been testing when I ran into a battle that seemed actually…good, surprisingly enough. I’m using a team centered on SD Breloom, who can actually be quite good. But whatever, introductions are lame. Game on!

Battle
Rules: Ladder Match, Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, OHKO Clause, Evasion Clause, Species Clause, Strict Damage Clause

Leftovers will be removed. For reference: Dusknoir and Gyarados are holding them
Scores will be shown after every KO: meta01knight’s score : DWrong’s score
Since I'm lazy and screwed up my log before I could use the warmachine: log will be in blue, comments in black, score in red

meta01knight sent out Jirachi (lvl 100 Jirachi).
DWrong sent out Shaymin-s (lvl 100 Shaymin-s).

I don’t really see Skymins as a lead very often. I really want to get SR down, since this is a pseudo-offensive team, and since I’m scarfed I figure I’ll out-speed and won’t die before I get rocks down. So, best case: Stealth Rock

Shaymin-s used Earth Power
It's super effective!
Jirachi lost 63% of its health.
Jirachi used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!

Well, since I didn’t go first, Shaymin’s scarfed. I love that since it really eases my prediction. I never know when Jirachi might want to screw over someone with trick, so I pull out my piñata pokemon and bring in Gyarados to dodge Earth Power

meta01knight switched in Gyarados (lvl 100 Gyarados ?).
Gyarados's intimidate cut Shaymin-s's attack!
Shaymin-s used Earth Power.
It doesn't affect Gyarados...

Yay for flying sea dragons. Alright, now I have a free turn, which is always nice. I could Waterfall on the switch and cause early damage, Taunt to prevent setup or Dragon Dance and see what I can do. I decide to start dancing and try and get going early…

DWrong switched in Gengar (lvl 100 Gengar ?).
Pointed stones dug into Gengar.
Gengar lost 12% of its health.
Gyarados used Dragon Dance.
Gyarados's attack was raised.
Gyarados's speed was raised.

...and in comes gengar. I hate scarfgars since they wreck me, and rather than take the chance of being outsped, I switch out expecting thunderbolt

meta01knight switched in Jolteon (lvl 100 Jolteon ?).
Gengar used Thunderbolt.

I love being right. It’s still early on, and since I have a specs jolteon, I don’t want to get locked into a bad move too early. I need to be the one dictating what happens at this point. I’m just going to baton pass out and scout for counters, if there are any

Jolteon used Baton Pass
meta01knight switched in Jirachi (lvl 100 Jirachi).
Gengar used Shadow Ball.
Jirachi lost 37% of its health.
meta01knight's Jirachi fainted.

5:6, Gengar popped the piñata

Well, my slow switching tactic failed miserably there. I figure Jirachi has done what he needs to for now, and decide to sacrifice him. I know Gengar isn’t scarfed now (and no LO), so I bring back in Jolteon since I know I can out-speed and KO with shadow ball.

meta01knight switched in Jolteon (lvl 100 Jolteon ?).
DWrong switched in Swampert (lvl 100 Swampert ?).
Pointed stones dug into Swampert.
Swampert lost 6% of its health.
Jolteon used Shadow Ball.
Swampert lost 36% of its health.
Swampert's special defence was lowered.

Well, in comes swampert, who I hate usually. Since shadow ball won’t give me the KO, I need to run away. Fortunately, I have a pretty good counter on hand. I figure I can resist waterfall/surf/earthquake, all of which are more likely than ice beam. Breloom, time to show your face

meta01knight switched in Breloom (lvl 100 Breloom ?).
DWrong switched in Shaymin-s (lvl 100 Shaymin-s).
Pointed stones dug into Shaymin-s.
Shaymin-s lost 25% of its health.

Okay so I can’t take an air slash obviously, since I’m not giving up Breloom for nothing. I love him way too much. Funny how a few cute pixels can make me form an attachment. So its time to sound the retreat to someone who can take a hit and hurt back. Yes, everybody’s favorite: Heatran

meta01knight switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Shaymin-s used Seed Flare.
It's not very effective...
Heatran lost 15% of its health.
Heatran's special defence was harshly lowered.

Seed Flare was unexpected, but I’m not complaining. Heatran takes pitiful damage + a special defense drop and gets ready to hurt something back. I’m wary of fire blasting rampantly because heatran is my fire resist, so giving other Heatrans (heatran’s? Heatranz? heatrani?) any free switches is bad. So, I use Hidden Power, which I think is ice, so at least they’ll take minimal damage…

DWrong switched in Swampert (lvl 100 Swampert ?).
Pointed stones dug into Swampert.
Swampert lost 6% of its health.
Heatran used Hidden Power.
It doesn't affect Swampert...

And Swampert comes back in to what is actually electric. Crap. Chalk that down as a horrible move. I don’t know why I didn’t Earth Power. Fortunately, repeated switching is starting to wear down his team. I’m worried that he’ll predict my Breloom switching in again, so I switch to Gyrados, for the intimidate and in order to possibly start setting up again. I just have to pray Swampert doesn’t have stone edge.

meta01knight switched in Gyarados (lvl 100 Gyarados ?).
Gyarados's intimidate cut Swampert's attack!
Swampert used Rain Dance.
Rain began to fall!
The rain continues to fall.

And suddenly a deluge soaks me at my computer. Fortunately for me, Gyrados can now spam boosted waterfalls. I decide that now is a good time to break from conservatism and go on the offensive, no set up required. Hopefully I can nail a switch-in pretty hard, and since I know I’ll out-speed Swampert and hit neutrally, something should be hurting.[/FONT]

DWrong switched in Kabutops (lvl 100 Kabutops ?).
Pointed stones dug into Kabutops.
Kabutops lost 12% of its health.
Gyarados used Waterfall.
Kabutops lost 78% of its health.
The rain continues to fall.

Well, Kabutops is much better than Kingdra right now as a switch for my team. Unfortunately, SR damage plus my wall of water didn’t KO. Since I’m going to be outsped, and still too scared to let another poke drop, I run to my wall.

meta01knight switched in Dusknoir (lvl 100 Dusknoir ?).
Dusknoir is exerting its pressure!
Kabutops used Stone Edge.
Kabutops's attack missed!
The rain continues to fall.

Er, that worked out pretty well. Hax, good and bad. Anyways, now I can just attack to finish him off, since he shouldn’t KO. I love easy decisions.

Kabutops used Stone Edge.
Dusknoir lost 47% of its health.
Kabutops lost 10% of its health.
DWrong's Kabutops fainted.
Dusknoir used Ice Punch.
But there was no target!
The rain continues to fall.

5:5; Kabutops commits suicide

And life orb sucks the last flickers of light from Kabutop’s eyes, and we get all tied up. Sadly, I’m actually shaking as I anticipate his switch-in. It’s still raining, which means…

DWrong switched in Kingdra (lvl 100 Kingdra ?).
Pointed stones dug into Kingdra.
Kingdra lost 12% of its health.
Kingdra used Dragon Dance.
Kingdra's attack was raised.
Kingdra's speed was raised.
Dusknoir used Pain Split.
Dusknoir restored 14% of its health.
Kingdra lost 14% of its health.
The rain continues to fall.

Yes, Kingdra. He’s scary under rainy conditions. Actually, he gives me nightmares sometimes. I need some health back so I decide to pain split, which doesn’t really help me out. Since I need to weaken it, and Dusknoir should take a hit, I figure I’ll attack. Time to try to damage that sucker with another ice punch

Kingdra used Waterfall
A critical hit!
Dusknoir lost 79% of its health.
meta01knight's Dusknoir fainted.
Kingdra lost 10% of its health.
The rain continues to fall.

4:5. How does water not go through a ghost?

Well, Dusknoir fades out to a crit. As the igors say, “what goeth around cometh around” (go read the discworld books). I don’t exactly have any good resistances left, nor do I have any phazers. So, I try to make do with my own water type and bait it into a dragon attack, or at least scout. I taunt to prevent substitutes or too many DDs

meta01knight switched in Gyarados (lvl 100 Gyarados ?)
Gyarados's intimidate cut Kingdra's attack!
Kingdra used Dragon Dance.
Kingdra's attack was raised.
Kingdra's speed was raised.
Gyarados used Taunt.
Kingdra fell for the taunt!
The rain continues to fall.

Sadly, he gets one more DD in to make up for my intimidate. That probably would have been better to attack. Now all I can do is Stone Edge and pray he won’t kill me with Draco Meteor. We can stall out the rain, come on Gyarados

Kingdra used Outrage.
Kingdra went on a rampage!
Gyarados lost 100% of its health.
meta01knight's Gyarados fainted.
Kingdra lost 10% of its health.
The rain stopped.

3:5, Kingdra is trashing Tokyo

Well, so much for running a bulky set. My best pseudo counter is gone. However, he’s locked into outrage, so Heatran is coming back in for some revenge...best served hot

meta01knight switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Kingdra used Outrage.
It's not very effective...
Heatran lost 54% of its health.
Kingdra lost 10% of its health.
Heatran used Dragon Pulse.
It's super effective!
Kingdra lost 44% of its health.
DWrong's Kingdra fainted.

3:4 and Heatran stands alone

That was easy. Heatran can take even boosted outrages at least once, and it shoots down that pesky kingdra.

DWrong switched in Shaymin-s (lvl 100 Shaymin-s).
Pointed stones dug into Shaymin-s.
Shaymin-s lost 25% of its health.

So now I’m not sure what to do. Most of my ground resists are gone, and I don’t want to risk breloom being 2HKO’d by earth power, so I decide to let Heatran go for a free switch in (+scouting his move). He’s done a good job…

Shaymin-s used Earth Power.
It's super effective!
Heatran lost 31% of its health.
meta01knight's Heatran fainted.

2:4, Skymin is still smirking (seriously look at its sprite. cocky bastard)

Bye Heatran. Since its now locked into Earth Power, I bring in Breloom as a resist. Time to sleep someone.

meta01knight switched in Breloom (lvl 100 Breloom ?).
DWrong switched in Swampert (lvl 100 Swampert ?).
Pointed stones dug into Swampert.
Swampert lost 6% of its health.
Breloom used Spore.
Swampert fell asleep!

He brings in swampert to take the spore. I am not going to waste time setting up, since we’re definitely racing towards the end of the battle. I need to start laying waste to his team, so I seed bomb, hoping to KO

Breloom used Seed Bomb.
It's super effective!
A critical hit!
Swampert lost 45% of its health.
DWrong's Swampert fainted.
Breloom lost 10% of its health.

2:3, Breloom blows up the water fox

And I do. Three cheers for unnecessary crits! Hurrah! Hurrah! Hur..okay I still have to finish this out and see who his last poké could be.

DWrong switched in Scizor (lvl 100 Scizor ?).
Pointed stones dug into Scizor.
Scizor lost 12% of its health.

This is potentially bad. Scizor is powerful and could KO me if he boosts up his bullet punches. Maybe even if he doesn't. Fortunately, I won’t let him set up! I’m pretty sure he won’t run speed EV’s, and since I have a few, I should be able to sleep him.

Breloom used Spore.
Scizor fell asleep!
Scizor is fast asleep!

Wow, my Breloom epitomizes "Speed Demon". He’ll be manageable when asleep. Now either he stays in, Gengar comes in, or skymin comes in. Mach punch should 2HKO scizor, and Skymin is so worn down from repeated switching into stealth rock that it would die too. However, Gengar getting a free switch could mean the end for my team, with only Jolteon and Breloom left. Seed bombing will hurt the ghostie, dent Scizor (hopefully), and KO Skymin. Swords Dance is only viable if he stays in or switches to skymin. So, I seed bomb. Fewest negatives and no real chance of losing someone without retribution

DWrong switched in Gengar (lvl 100 Gengar ?).
Pointed stones dug into Gengar.
Gengar lost 12% of its health.
Breloom used Seed Bomb.
It's not very effective...
Gengar lost 56% of its health.
Breloom lost 10% of its health.

And catch Gengar and hit it for half. Way to go Breloom. He can sling attacks around with the best of any Pokémon. Now, all I can do is give Jolt a free switch in, so I seed bomb out of desperation, sending Breloom to the gallows

Gengar used Shadow Ball.
Breloom lost 74% of its health.
Breloom used Seed Bomb.
It's not very effective...
Gengar lost 19% of its health.
DWrong's Gengar fainted.
Breloom lost 7% of its health.
meta01knight's Breloom fainted.

1:2, Breloom and Gengar go down locked in battle

And somehow, I manage to survive a shadow ball with 7% hp left. By a miracle, Breloom takes down Gengar. Sadly, Life orb takes down Breloom. Aw...but without fear, I switch in my Jolteon.

meta01knight switched in Jolteon (lvl 100 Jolteon ?).
DWrong switched in Shaymin-s (lvl 100 Shaymin-s).
Pointed stones dug into Shaymin-s.
Shaymin-s lost 25% of its health.

And then I flip out. Since he’s scarfed, he’ll outspeed my Jolt for sure. And I figure that Earth Power can KO, even with me at full health. So I begin sacrificing my future children to the gods of the random numbers (new cult!!), hoping I can live long enough to KO that Shaymin.

Shaymin-s used Earth Power.
It's super effective!

WHAT WILL HAPPEN!!!

Jolteon lost 81% of its health.
Jolteon's special defence was lowered.
Jolteon used Thunderbolt.
Shaymin-s lost 25% of its health.
DWrong's Shaymin-s fainted.

1:1, All tied up…crunch time

Wow that was scary at the time. As I’ve just calculated, Earth Power only does 92% max to a 4/0 jolteon…never a OHKO. Now, I’m pretty sure I can put this game in the bag with another thunderbolt. The only thing left is how long his Scizor will sleep, since in Jolteon’s weakened state Bullet Punch is a sure loss for me.

DWrong switched in Scizor (lvl 100 Scizor ?).
Pointed stones dug into Scizor.
Scizor lost 12% of its health.
Scizor is fast asleep!
Jolteon used Thunderbolt.
Scizor lost 76% of its health.
DWrong's Scizor fainted.
meta01knight wins!

1:0. GOOD GAME DWrong!!

Breloom chuckles from its fainted state inside its poké ball, as Scizor stays asleep and Jolteon KO’s with his thunderbolt. It’s nice to have the last laugh, eh Breloom?

Props:
-pretty good match without too many hax in important places (stuff balanced out at least)
-team synergy; some of my guys really got working together well. Hey, kids, teamwork can be a good thing!
-Kingdra for wreaking havoc and being generally amazing
-Breloom for crippling and killing like it should be doing
-DWrong for using rain dance teams

Slops:
-Jirachi for failing at doing anything
-Kabutops getting hit hard and then fainting quickly
-Dusknoir for not walling anything at all…
-HP Electric on Heatran, I mean what could he hit that would switch in?
-Me for getting scared at the end about Skymin

Overall it was a stellar match. It started out tentatively, but the rain dance really sped up the pace and overall it was a fast match, which I tend to like more. I think that the thing that turned it for me was my team's ability to switch around, dodge moves, and keep the other team on the defensive. You don't have to counter specific threats, just cover each other's weaknesses.

Thanks for reading! (And I was serious about reading the Discworld books, since they’re better than this). Oh, and any comments are appreciated, since I'd like to do this again if I have the chance.
edit: removed font tags. enjoy!

Sorry to be an ass but Font tags much? Please remove and I'll add my input on the warstory.

Pretty good otherwise.

That was a pretty good match and a damn good warstory.

Nothing really needs to be changed.

Thank you for making me evening a little bit nicer.

Not a bad read or battle, though I must ask, why is Jirachi in the "Slops" for the reason you gave? It laid down Stealth Rock which played a large role for your team's realization of victory.

Thanks.
Dr. Eyepatch: Its a trick-choice scarf Jirachi, who can usually put the scarf on something that doesn't need it. In most of my battles it does a lot more.
Artic One: Because it looks like a fox! Otherwise its just a glorified tadpole. Oh, and nice warmachine program-I like it

Bah! Warmachine is for wusses! Real men go through the log themselves and edit everything!

... I'll be honest I can't figure out how to use Warmachine

^oh yeah I was going to comment on that too, people want to ban something that can't kill a jolteon with a SE hit.

Oh and to Gen empoleon:
1.file->open and open your log file
2.select your options (I prefer just checking bold for both players plus turning off lefties/nicknames/weather)
3.hit ok
4.ctrl+c and copy into a text editor

You say that Jirachi "did nothing", but he appeared to do quite a bit: He laid down stealth rocks, scouted shaymin's set (providing Gyara a free switch in), and scouted Gengar's set. That seems good enough for a lead.

It didn't seem too quick when reading it, but after reviewing who all was in the battle, a lot of them did nothing significant (in general, not this particular battle). A really good read nonetheless.

This is one of the best warstories I've read in a while. I've found it even more entertaining than many of the ones in the Archive. It kept my attention throughout the entire game and the detailed insight into your thoughts really adds a nice touch.

wow. this is the first warstory I've read the whole way through(that wasn't in the archives). extremely nice job!! nice battling also

Jolteon has base 95 SpD iirc. Its pretty bulky specially.

What's your point? The coment wasn't "Jolteon's got some special bulky," it was "Shaymin-s doesn't hit hard enough." Frankly, if it leaves 4/0 jolteon alive from a super effective hit from a sweeper with full investment in its offensive stat, it's not hitting hard enough.

Uh, I might be missing something here but http://ownpurpose.com/damage_calculator.php says that scarf Heatran will do 75.74% - 89.71% to that Jolteon. Of course Heatran has much better defenses and typing, but I don't think it's fair to says that Skymin isn't powerful enough when Heatran of off 130 special attack can't even KO Jolteon after SR.
And, of course, a life orb Shaymin would have KOed while maintaining fair speed.

Not saying that he's Ubers for it or anything, but Skymin isn't so weak.
