hi i want a mon with lots of ribbons

(maybe this would go in ruins of alph but it pertains to this gen too ok)

i started playing emerald again the other day and now it's time for me to start the battle frontier. i am looking to breed a successful mon who can get as many ribbons as possible.

so i need to collect ribbons from the battle tower in emerald and win all the ranks of each contest. then i need to do some stuff in colloseum too, right? does xd have any unique ribbons? do i need to actually catch a mon from colliseum or xd to qualify for certain ribbons? are there any unique ribbons in fr/lg?

basically what i'm looking for is a strong and also cute mon who can transition smoothly (battle tower-wise) from third to fourth gen that i can catch/breed (hopefully the latter) in a third gen game and acquire all possible medals before pal parking him and getting all non-event medals in d/p too. help me out here, in-game completionists!

hmm i don't know anything about xd, what does that entail exactly

do i have to catch a wild mon and purify it for it to have the purification ribbon? if so that makes good ivs/nature fairly difficult. or is it that all the mons on my team get it if a purify one? sorry, the link is kind of vague, especially to someone with no xd experience/knowledge.

and ty tang!!!!

claydol is pretty good. you can get shadow baltoy in xd i think. cosmic power/secret power/hidden power/selfdestruct is great for contests in emerald. i think you can guess how it works.
EDIT: and obviously you change the moveset for the tower

Colosseum and XD might be worth skipping over, since they only provide one ribbon a piece. You should take into account how well-rounded your pokemon can be as a contest pokemon, since those are really where the money's at. I was going to try this with Salamence, but I wasn't sure if I could pull it off because of how shitty its ADV movepool is in terms of contest diversity. It's been a few years since I've actually played the contests, though, so I may be underestimating it, who knows. Bear in mind it has to keep all (necessary) egg moves throughout the competitions.

I'm actually hoping to do something similar myself, so I'll definitely be a spectator in this thread, thanks for making it.

Edit: Claydol =/= cute. :P

You won't need Colosseum if you have XD, so you can get both of those ribbons from there. You'll have to catch a pokemon from XD and purify it, and only it will get the ribbon, not the others on your team. Seeing as how you are going to be using it in the battle tower, you'll probably want a decent pokemon. The other XD ribbon is from doing 100 wins in Mt. Battle without changing your team - if you trade over a couple of strong pokemon, that shouldn't be much trouble.

Yeah - if you want the Purification ribbon (and you probably will because it comes with the cool tagline of 'a ribbon awarded to a Pokemon that overcame all challenges'), you'll need to capture a Shadow Pokemon in Colloseum or XD and then purify it. So, since you want this Pokemon to be competitive (by Battle Tower standards at least), it might require a bit of soft-resetting.

So here's your choices

I'm going to go with the nooby answer here - just pick your favorite Pokemon from that list (within reason obviously). You're going to spend a shitload of time using this critter so it needs to be something you enjoy using or your brave quest will surely fail!

I think the Mt. Battle ribbon is only in XD (complete the entire Mt. Battle challenge with the same team of Pokémon, I think).

Oh, and remember to get the Champion Ribbon; it's different from the Sinnoh Champ Ribbon. You probably already knew that, but just to make sure ;)

hmm ok thanks lee

but wait, can colloseum-only mons (not native to xd) get the purification ribbons too? or is it just the xd list that makes that ribbon available?

if it's the latter then that seriously narrows down my choices. i'd like to have a scizor for dppt but getting a 56 win streak with scyther/scizor in third gen would be pretty tricky i'd imagine. mence/zapdos are also really cool but i'd miss out on some egg moves with mence. chansey seems sweet though!

but how do i go about catching these guys in xd? is it just standard catching fare, then i have to purify them? or is this concept of 'snagging' something else entirely (the fact that mons have a trainer name associated with them worries me)

The story mode in both Colloseum and XD encourages you to 'steal' (snag) Pokemon from enemy trainers that are associated with the bad guys - Cipher iirc. Once you've caught them and 'opened their heart' (I reccomend you use the Time Flute to avoid any unwanted EVs being acquired) you take them to Celebis Shrine in Ilex Forest for purification at which point you recieve the ribbon.

The problem with Scyther is that you might be stuck with Swarm. Suicune is a great option - it works very well in both gens.

is the scyther issue because abilities will randomly change upon being pal parked to d/p? if so, couldn't i just get a technician scyther from xd and clone it in emerald before pal parking?

I would say suicune like lee said, or swampert. I beat every contest in R/S/E with pert, and bulky waters work great in the emerald battle frontier. Suicune gets the purification ribbon, but is hard to get good ivs, while swampert doesn't get that ribbon, but is easy to get a flawless one.

Technician doesn't exist in 3rd Gen - it may change upon being evolved in 4th Gen but it's a bit risky (and you'd have to do 3rd Gen BT as Scyther).

Smeargle definately sounds good for contests as Curse chained to Destiny Bond can allow you to beat any ADV contest without even using Pokeblock. The Battle Tower would be harder to pull off, but you could use something like the Belly Passer or just Spore and switch to something that can set up.

Start with with XD, and purify the available Smeargle to get the National Badge. Proceed to beat Mt. Battle to get the Earth Ribbon, but make sure your Smeargle remains at level 50, or below. Trade to Emerald, succesfully beat all twenty contest levels/types, then take it to Lilycove for it to be painted, and get the Artist Ribbon. When that's done, complete the Battle Tower Level 50 Challenge, then proceed to train the Smeargle to level 100, and beat the Level 100 Challenge. Round it off by defeating the Hoenn Elite 4, then trade to DPPt.

Badges so far: 26

Sinnoh Contests now, wrap up all twenty. Then, buy the three Resort Area Ribbons. Go to the Battle Tower and:

- Have 21 consecutive wins in the Single Battle Mode for the Ability Ribbon
- Have 49 consecutive wins in the Single Battle Mode for the Great Ability Ribbon
- Win 50 times in Double Battle Mode for the Double Ability Ribbon
- Win 50 times in Multi Battle Mode with a computer trainer for the Multi Ability Ribbon
- Win 50 times in Multi Battle Mode with a friend for a Pair Ability Ribbon

to get the Battle Tower Sinnoh Badges. Then, head to Sunyshore to get the Effort Badge. Get all seven badges from Julia as well. Mr Footprint next up for the Footprint Ribbon, then finish by defeating the Sinnoh Elite Four.

Total Badges: 64

That's how many you can end up with without resorting to outside game events.

There's one more in the Battle Tower, in DP at least: you get the World Ability Ribbon for reaching Rank 5 (I think) in the Wi-Fi Room.

My Smeargle has 64 ribbons. Missing The multi ability ribbon (Double battle w/NPC partner)

It is from Colisseum, so it has the purify ribbon, and smeargle gets ANY attacks, so it is ideal for contests.

Hope that helped.

amazing, thank you

but if i were to try with scyther, how do ability changes work? abilities will change randomly when a mon evolves in dppt? is it set from the time it's born or is it random? if the latter i could just clone the scyther repeatedly in emerald and keep trying right?

LONG EXPLANATION:
All Pokemon have two "ability slots"; even those who only have one ability. The ability slot is chosen upon the Pokemon's creation - when you first encounter it in a battle or when the egg is created (NOT when you pick it up). For most, if not all, Pokemon in RSE, they only had one ability, so they had the same ability regardless of slot. Now, if that Pokemon's evolution has a different ability in that slot in DPPt, it'll change upon evolution; if not, it'll remain the same. Since the slot is chosen upon the Pokemon's creation, this outcome will never change even if you clone it before transferring.

SHORT EXPLANATION:
No, which ability the Pokemon will have in DPPt when it evolves is predetermined upon the Pokemon's creation (wild battle, egg creation [NOT pickup], etc.), even if the Pokemon came from the third gen. Cloning before transferring/evolving will not change this.
