Houndoom (Early Bird)

Here are some logs that uragg. collected for me because my Houndoom kept getting haxed at the most inopportune moments. At one point I was walling a team that used the walling combination of Heal Bell Altaria and Milotic (something NO other Defensive Fire can do) when I got crit Surfed. I sort of rage quit after that so I couldn't save the log. Anyway, I edited out the talking, but at one point he left a note for me that said ANA I FUCKING LOVE THIS THING.

I would also like to add that Houndoom actually has BETTER SPD AND HP than Specially Defensive Drapion. Also, notice how it survives a leftovers feraligatr waterfall in the last game.

I would also like to add that Houndoom actually has BETTER SPD AND HP than Specially Defensive Drapion.

Drapion beats it in Defense, though. Just saying.

Anyway, here's my thoughts. I'm still not completely convinced that it can beat Milotic. However, I will admit that I am impressed by how well Houndoom has done. I haven't had as much luck as I would like with it, but I've decided that it's just my inexperience with this set, along with me not being the best at testing sets. Therefore, I will support this set. I find that it does best after you've started to hurt the opponent, and they attempt to shore up their defenses. They will attempt to use non-damaging moves such as Stealth Rock and Pain Split, and it is during this weak period that Specially Defensive Houndoom strikes...Jeez, now I'm sounding like someone saying something for "Planet Earth". Anyway, this Houndoom has a lot of potential, and I've been mistaken by believing that it's just being wasted.

Good luck with this set!

From my experiences using Houndoom and Anacharonism's team, I have to say that this Houndoom set is no slouch. This set won't be able to match the sweeping capabilities of the Nasty Plot set against offensive teams, but it really shines against stall. Taunt is really what makes the set special, since it prevents recovery of HP and status and also serves as a defensive buffer because most walls that this Houndoom is trying to eliminate can't 2HKO it and will therefore try to status/phaze it. I'm not saying that this is a sure lock to be put on-site, but it is something that can cause a lot of problems for stall teams. I urge the qc people to test it because it definitely is useful. just my two cents from using it.

Physically defensive Leafeon with Heal bell pairs pretty decently with this variant of Houndoom, taking powerful physical attacks and at the same time healing with heal bell when waking up early with early bird won't cut it.

Personally this set looks okay, I'd much rather use Moltres and Arcanine as a bulky fires in general. I understand that it lures out bulky waters but even then there are better bulky water lures. It's not a horrible set, but I think it should be mentioned in OC.

I've used rest early bird houndoom, albeit a different set but using it has shown me that rest + early bird is actually quite a good combination. While this set may seem gimmicky, I think its quite effective in certain situations and unique enough to warrant its own analysis (note: I am not on the UU QC team so don't consider this an approval, just an opinion).

I'm definitely changing my opinion after playing against this set. My team is full of special attackers but lacks any physical attackers that can hit it on its weaker side super-effectively. It was annoying as hell and pp stalled my blastoise of surf Dx

This is definitely a set that looks like a gimmick... but if played well, it is definitely not a gimmick and possibly one of the most annoying sets ever invented.

However, I still see it as having trouble with stuff like Rhyperior, Azumarill, Hitmonlee, and Feraligatr. Venusaur should be bolded and underlined; it is an essential part of the combo and thus (I feel at least) should be detailed a bit more.

Otherwise.. it is not fun to play against this set Dx

Very well. Given the experiences of some of the people who played against this set, I will reconsider my initial rejection. This is not an approval, mind. I'll have to test it or see it in action first. I'm not fond of testing stallish sets because I suck at using stall, but I'll try and get a few others more inclined towards that playstyle to test this.

I used this a long time ago as a joke, and it was a pretty hilarious Mismagius check. It's a pretty good check to Spiritomb, SubRoost legendary birds, Sceptile, etc. It comes really close to being able to outstall Milotic, which is quite a shame - although I did beat a Blastoise one-on-one with it. While perhaps inferior to Arcanine in a number of aspects, most notably taking physical hits, this set definitely has a niche. Taunt is extremely useful, especially against defensive teams (think stallbreaker Mismagius).

QC Approved 1/2

Finally, I've gotten some luck with this set. It was just my bad skills that smothered Houndoom's potential on my team. I'm happy now, and I'm wholeheartedly supporting this set. I'm also happy that Eo approved this set. Also, this kinda serves as a bump, since no one has commented on the set for a while...

I tested this, and I talked to Ana and give him my in-depth reasoning for rejecting this set. Basically it boils down to other Pokemon I used (Bulky Missy, Specially Defensive Arcanine, Drapion) having much more general utility and the ability to more consistently beat the things they're supposed to beat with less support than this needs. Given that Houndoom already has a bunch of sets, I don't see any reason to include one that is honestly pretty mediocre. Sorry!

[Insert Grimer Stamp]

I tested this for about 10 matches and found it incredibly underwhelming. At times I would have much rather had Arcanine for Intimidate and priority. Like Flare said it just doesn't have much utility outside fighting stall teams, which other Pokemon are better off at anyway (like bulky Missy, who can also hold her own against other types of teams). And I still find that even with the half timer for Sleep, it's incredibly predictable and easily abused.

Also, the logs weren't really that convincing. Houndoom coming into an Exxegutor's Grass Knot or Weezing's Thunderbolt and Toxicing a switch in? Arcanine can do the exact same thing while having better defenses, Intimidate, and Morning Sun.

I admit that the set has a bit of potential, so this isn't a rejection. But I'm going to have to test it for another round.

I was really intrigued by this set as well and I used it for a good 20+ matches on a team that really supported it - think Slowbro to take physical and SE hits and Venusaur to come in on Water and Fighting attacks... in the end I switched to Specially Defensive Arcanine and never regretted it. It's not a bad set, and it makes a cool Poke to switch into Venusaur, but overall I feel it's both a waste of Houndoom's potential (unlike bulky Arcanine who is bulkier on both sides and still hits like a brick + has powerful priority) and and is outclassed by both specially defensive Arcanine and Drapion in what it aims to do. Really good fun to use and great shock value but not a competitive choice imo.

Seeing as I approved this, I'll go a bit more in-depth as to my explanation why. I might be partially biased, seeing as I've forever hated facing SubRoost Moltres/Articuno, but one of the main selling points about this Houndoom was its ability to beat the aforementioned two Pokemon. Arcanine has to run Rest in order to accomplish the same, which is not at all as efficient as either Morning Sun or a one-turn Rest. Other perks include its ability to force out SubSeeders (I hate SubSeeders about as much as I loathe SubRoostToxic stallers, so this might be biased again), ability to beat just about all variants of Spiritomb and stallbreaker Mismagius, ability to lure in Milotic without fail and Toxic it, and access Taunt for defensive teams. Perhaps Houndoom is outclassed in these regards by other Pokemon, but certainly not in all of them by a single Pokemon.

Bumping this. It was controversial a while back. I still stand by my rejection, but now that we have more QC members, they can look at it and approve/reject with some finality.

Ok, I've tested this for about 30 games, and to be honest, in neither of them did Houndoom stand out to be honest. My reason for rejecting this isn't that, though. In all of my games, when I thought "Hey, easy to counter, only gotta go to my Fire-type", Arcanine always came to mind. However, on a second thought, when I noticed I had Houndoom, I knew I just couldn't switch in on most of the stuff that were threatening my team. It couldn't come in on Alakazam because of Focus Blast; on Mismagius because of HP Fighting (and because Flamethrower doesn't hit Mismagius hard enough to beat a NP Thunderbolt set); on Sceptile because I had to fear Earthquake (no Intimidate really hurts) and Focus Blast; on Venusaur because Earthquake would KO Houndoom it (also I'm pretty sure Flamethrower doesn't OHKO it, but maybe that was just me facing a bulky spread); on Toxicroack because of super effective Fighting moves; on offensive Arcanine because... so on. Not only that, but I found its usage extremely restricted as long as Dugtrio was alive (Arcanine at least can run freely when it's at 50%), and I couldn't weaken threats I had lost my counter to with Intimidate like I could with Arcanine.

Don't take me bad, this set is by no means terrible, and the reason I mentioned so many things is because countering better sets is harder than just saying "lol it sucks, bro". I think you could mention this set on Optional Changes, but that's pretty much it.

That is two rejections...I guess that's it.

This is the last call, some of the rejections appear to be semi-based on the fact that this set is outclassed, but the point is that if it's good, it deserves an analysis.

Otherwise I'll lock and move it.

Well see, it being "good" does not necessarily mean it deserves an analysis if the Pokemon in question can do other sets as well or better. If you're talking about something like Sunflora or Castform, yeah, it being outclassed is not really relevant; we just approve the sets if they're effectively optimized and are the best the Pokemon in question can do. Houndoom already has several viable sweeping sets, so I don't see any need to include a defensive set when it's done so much better by Arcanine. That's just the way I see things, anyway...if the rest of QC does not agree that's fine.

We seriously need a formalized guideline for this though...

The point is that this shouldn't be rejected on the premise that "Arcanine does it better". If it were to be rejected, it should be because it's not good (in relation to other sets).

I'll leave this open for a bit, because we have one of those scenarios where the analysis would be approved (if i stamped it) and rejected.

I'll ask Jabba, ToF, and whistle to weigh in.

this is actually a nice set to be honest because early bird has favoured me so much. since we going by individual set performances, i think this is perfectly fine to be honest. as a sole set for countering special attackers mostly, this actually holds its ground nice. early bird + rest is amazing to offset the sr weakness and beat milotic with toxic stalling. also, rest has more pp than morning sun so that's a plus.

edit: also beats subtoxic moltres and articuno! i hate them as well

Here's the way I see it. The question we should be asking ourselves when we're approving/rejecting an analysis for a Pokemon is "Does this set make the best use of this Pokemon's characteristics". This is probably the most consistent policy we can adapt.
Look at Houndoom's characteristics. It has 75/50/80 defenses, which is decent on the special side and shit on the physical side. It has a Fire typing, which is pretty bad defensively, and a Dark typing, which is only marginally better. Its support movepool consists of...Toxic, Taunt, and Will-O-Wisp. And finally, its only form of recovery is the unreliable Rest...and while status recovery is a nice perk, being unable to do anything for 1 turn in a metagame as (currently) offensive as UU is not a good thing at all, especially not when you have Houndoom's common weaknesses and a weak STAB that many, many things resist or are immune to.
On the other hand, Houndoom has fantastic attacking stats, speed, access to Nasty Plot, and excellent offensive STABs in Fire and Dark. So obviously, Houndoom is far better off sweeping than it is adopting a defensive role. That it CAN do a mediocre job defensively doesn't mean that such a set should make it into the analysis; many offensive Pokemon can adopt defensive roles and do an okay job of it, but only when a Pokemon can do so as well as they perform an offensive role should those sets be included. The two most relevant examples I can think of right now are Arcanine and Heatran; both of those can be used offensively as well as defensively equally well. Houndoom...really cannot.

To summarize real quick, I think a Pokemon should only have a set approved if a) it is optimized to that Pokemon's strengths and b) it is, relatively to the metagame, roughly as effective at its niche as its other sets are.

This is just my thought process, and I'm open to persuasion...but if other QC members are divided on this (which seems to be the case) I think we'd best make a separate thread in C&C, like the one about speed creep, so we don't clutter this one.

there was already a discussion about this with most c&c contributors... just not in a public forum. in spite of that it would be kind of silly to have the same exact discussion again. basically the argument was that the dex is supposed to show what sets a Pokemon can viably run in a metagame, which means even if a set is outclassed it should still be included. but obviously this would include a mention of whatever other Pokemon can (arguably) do it better.

the problem I have with your (flareblitz) definition is that whether a set satisfies condition A is not very relevant to whether the set is good, and the criteria "Pokemon's strengths" is up for much debate anyways. you could have the same argument for Heatran -- use its massive 130 satk, good coverage attacks, taunt and explosion, sr neutrality for lots of switchins as a reason why Heatran's strengths lie in offense. it is not immediately obvious that it is also a good defensive pokemon due to lots of sweet resistances, but the fact is that defensive heatran sets are very good.

the same thing is the case here -- if this set is good, then it turns out that Houndoom's strength isn't just offense -- it can also run a defensive set well. if the set isn't good, then we should reject the set because of that, not because it doesn't "play to Houndoom's strengths".

that said... I haven't tested this (or any other QC sets in the last few days) because I've been busy with other smogon shit. but just from what I'd theorymon up I don't think I'd have much to add...

You might have misunderstood my argument, whoostle. I agree that we should accept/reject sets based on how good they are.
The problem with figuring out whether the set is "good" or not is that we have no standard of reference. We can't necessarily say "this set is bad because other pokemon do it better"; see the Espeon v. Alakazam thing. We could say "this set is bad because it doesn't do what it's supposed to do", but then if someone makes up a set for the specific purpose of countering one Pokemon while freely admitting that it's set up bait for everything else...what do we do? Do we accept it because it "does what it's supposed to do"? Or do we reject it because its strengths are not enough to compensate for its weaknesses? If the latter, then what if the Pokemon can't do anything else besides that one set? Do we leave its analysis blank?

It might seem obvious to accept/reject a set based on whether it's "good" or not, but as I just pointed out, there are other factors that bear consideration. If a set performs well in a tiny niche but is not useful outside that niche, and we're accepting sets like that...then we shouldn't have rejected some of the sets that we've rejected (like roar/grudge ninetales). I personally rejected that set because there are way better ways to use Ninetales and, as a set, its strengths didn't compensate for its weaknesses. However, if Ninetales had no sets currently on-site because it wasn't good at doing anything besides roar/grudge, then I would have approved that set just because it was the best use of Ninetales. That's what I meant; if Houndoom didn't have viable sweeping sets on-site and this was the best it could do, I would have approved it, but Houndoom DOES have viable sweeping sets on site, so I don't see the need to approve an underwhelming defensive set for it.

I hope that made my position clearer.
