Houndstone is a potent wallbreaker in sand teams, being able to 2HKO most walls in UU with Poltergeist while being faster than the entire unboosted metagame. Play Rough is used to deal with Mandibuzz, Iron Jugulis, and Hydreigon. Shadow Sneak can be used to pick off weakened foes outside sand or KO Choice Scarf Gardevoir, which is an otherwise good answer for sand teams. Body Press hits common answers like Tyranitar, Blissey, and Bisharp, dealing massive damage and ensuring they can't switch in against Houndstone again. Memento enables setup opportunities for teammates like Sand Rush Excadrill, Calm Mind Sinistcha, and Nasty Plot Hydrapple in sand teams. Swapping Houndstone's item away has few benefits for it, but using Trick against Pokemon like Iron Defense Skarmory and Blissey can make them pretty much useless for the rest of the game. Tera Ghost amplifies Houndstone's damage output even further, ensuring 2HKOs on physically defensive Hydrapple, Skarmory, and Donphan. It also enables Houndstone to OHKO Keldeo, which is problematic for sand teams, with Poltergeist as well as Latios with Shadow Sneak.
Houndstone undoubtedly should be used with a sand setter like Tyranitar or Hippowdon; Hippowdon is preferred, as Tyranitar’s Knock Off doesn’t synergize well with Poltergeist. Moreover, both are able to set Stealth Rock, which is crucial to chip many Pokemon, notably Conkeldurr, Azumarill, and Galarian Zapdos, into range of being KOed by Poltergeist. Mandibuzz is an invaluable partner, as it's immune to sand chip damage and a safe switch-in to Pokemon like Hydreigon and Iron Jugulis while also providing pivoting opportunities. Hydrapple is also used in sand teams and appreciates Houndstone eliminating its checks such as Skeledirge. Keldeo is used for wallbreaking, checking Pokemon like Weavile, and bringing Houndstone in safely against Pokemon such as Slowking and Latios with Flip Turn. Offsetting entry hazards is just as important to make sure that Houndstone can hit the field many times; this can be done with common teammates like Excadrill and Mandibuzz. Pokemon like physically defensive Mandibuzz and Booster Energy Iron Jugulis can be troublesome to deal with, and partners like Tinkaton and Fezandipiti can handle these threats very well.
