How do you breed?

Don't get me wrong, I know how to breed pokémon. I understand how IVs are passed down and how long it takes for my baby pokes to hatch.

What I don't understand is how you end up with these awesome IV combinations.

Can you give any insight as to how you optimize your breeding time? Should I invest the most time into catching Dittos? Should I catch more of the pokémon I'm breeding?

When it comes down to actually breeding what are the best combinations? Should I stick it out with a Ditto and the poke I'm breeding, or should I try and get two decent versions of the poke in question? Should you breed for nature first and then Everstone from there, or is a Ditto with a 31 in the IV you need with the wrong nature an okay place to start, just keep hatching eggs until you get the right natures?

Is it better to save before getting the egg, hatching it and soft resetting or better to get a boxfull and go from there?

I feel like I breed for weeks to get pokémon with high 20 IVs and maybe one 31 and give in to a neutral nature because I can't stand to hatch another one. However, posters here make it seem like the have this triple flawless pokémon with the right nature in a week or less.

Tell me how you do it!

Use a synchronizer to get a female with the nature you want, then just start breeding her with the best dad you have available. Replace a parent if you hatch a baby with better IVs than its mom/dad. From there it's really just a matter of luck and patience.

What I like to do is basically breed 3 pokemon (a father, a mother, and the final baby).

These are the steps I do
Note: I am using Jolly Infernape as an example so I will not be focusing on Special Attack

1.Pre-Breeding Preparations
  • Capture Dittos until you get ones with atleast 1 different perfect IV in each stat. (This only needs to be done once for all future breeding)
  • Capture a Ditto or Female with the appropriate nature.
  • Breed a male with egg moves wanted
2. Breeding the father
  • Take the male with the egg moves and breed it with a ditto with a 31 hp IV until you receive a male baby with a 31 hp IV.
  • Take the baby and breed it with a 31 att IV ditto until you receive a male with 31/31/x/x/x/x.
  • Take this baby and breed it with a 31 speed IV ditto until you receive a male with 31/31/x/x/x/31.
3. Breeding the mother
  • Take any male and breed it with a ditto with a 31 hp IV until you receive a baby with a 31 hp IV.
  • Take the baby and breed it with a 31 def IV ditto until you receive a baby with 31/x/31/x/x/x.
  • Take this baby and breed it with a 31 spdef IV ditto until you receive a male with 31/x/31/x/31/x.
  • Take this one and breed it with the ditto/female holding the everystone until you recieve a Jolly female with the above IVs. If a better female comes along (31/x/31/x/x/x for example) then replace it.
4. Breeding the final baby/better parents
  • Take the 31/31/x/x/x/31 male with the egg moves and breed it with the female (holding everstone) 31/x/31/x/31/x. You are mostly aiming for a 31/31/31/x/x/31 male, or 31/31/31/x/31/x or 31/x/31/x/31/31 female.
  • Replace the parent with the baby when this is achieved.
  • Your ending parents should look something like Male (with egg moves) 31/31/31/x/x/31 breeding with Jolly Female (holding everstone) 31/?/31/x/31/? (one of the ?s should be 31).
  • Breed until you recieve a Jolly 31/31/31/x/31/31 Chimchar.
  • You most likely will get a like a 31/31/27/x/29/31 along the way so breeding for perfection isn't necessary if you don't mind good, yet not perfect IVs.

This is the info I was looking for, thank you! I don't know why something like this wouldn't have occurred to me before, but it makes sense.

I also never thought to catch Dittos with a Synchronize-r in the front of my party.

Now maybe it won't take me three weeks to get some subpar pokemon.

About soft-resetting: I really do this when I don't have Everstone on the mother, I'm searching for a certain trait and/or gender, or if I'm breeding for Hidden Power. Seriously, mass-hatching under these conditions is a pain in the ass.

Maybe you should've read the breeding guide a little more carefully. It's all you need to know, and most of the information L2 had were in the guide.

wow thanks for explaining all of this, it really helps now. I had the same problem as you PixelTwist so you weren't the only one. It took me a month to get a 20/31/20/31/12/31 Gible, and now it will take me less time to get a 31/31/x/31/31/31 Gible or at least something similar to that. Thanks anyways.

31/31/31/x/31/31 + 31/31/31/x/31/31 = 0.024% = 1:4221

Are you sure you want to go quintuple-flawless? A little less IVs won't make a huge difference, you know (6 less IVs would do a 1% difference on the final damage).

how are abilities defined?

I have trouble the right ability on good IV'd offspring, where as offspring with not so desirable IV's get the ability i want

Well i guess I can go with a 31/31/25+/x/25+/31, only 3 perfect IVs, its a lot easier than quintuple-flawless. Just wanted to get a really good Gible.

EDIT: And BTW your link doesnt work. Dont know if its just me or anyone else, but it doesnt work for me.

weird, i thought parents could only pass 3 stats max total between the two of them.

They do, but parents with 4 or 5 max IVs gives a greater chances to make the IVs passed be 31 instead of a crappy IV. Then you have to hope that the random IVs created are also 31 or close to it.

For Example: I was breeding these Elekid:

Male x/31/x/30/x/31 with female x/31/x/x/31/x31 and wound up with 30/31/31/30/2/31. The attack, special attack, and speed were passed down. The HP and Def were randomly generated and happen to be very good. The Special Defense was also random. This is why it's terribly hard to breed for all around amazingly IVed mixed sweepers.

yeah that's pretty much what i thought. i just breed until i get the 3 31's that i want and decent randoms in the other stats

Oh, you make it look so easy. :p Even so, thank you for typing it out clearly like that in step by step instructions; it should really help me with my breeding!

Breeding is actually very easy. It's just time consuming. Getting three 31 IVed pokes is a piece of cake, only takes like an hour to do it if you have all of the pre-breeding stuff done. It's just having the patience to go further than three 31 IVs that makes the difference in a good IVed pokemon and a great IVed pokemon. Personally, it would be much more useful to breed a bunch of three 31 IVed pokemon with 2 other good IVs than one 4 31 IVed pokemon. The difference in time between the two is ridiculous.

It is definitely very time consuming, but if you are determined enough, then it can be done.

I was able to breed a Ralts with 31/20/31/31/31/31 IV spread. It took over a week, but it was all worth it in the end. She is now a very powerful Gardevoir, as well as an invaluable member of my team.

Edit: It helps to pass the time if you do something else while you wait for the eggs to hatch. Read a book or something, while you alternately hold the up and down keys.

well it is time consuming..

i breed for pokes with 2--3 31 ivs in the right stats and all good ivs in the other stats.....which takes one two days.

so its not that bad..just boring

yeah, it took me to an effing week of constant breeding to get my 28/30/31/29/20/31 totodile. Never again will I spend that long breeding. Unless youre breeding a wall, which usually needs 31s in more than 3 stats, it's way easier to just get something with 31 ivs in three stats. Not that I need to, my totodile is such a hot sell. That's the trick. Breed something that is rare, but desirable, and then use that to get everything else you need. I chose totodile because noone else had good ones.

L2m6w5's example should really have both parents with 31/31/x/x/x/31 and x/x/31/x/31/31. That would give a better chance since HP and Defense are harder to breed for.
