The guide scowls as she recalls her Pokemon. "I was supposed to win you clients over, but you never planned to consider our offer in the first place, did you?" She tucks back her hair and straightens her shirt. "I must insist again, though. You're aware just how lucrative our offers are, right?"
"The-" the receptionist begins to say, before the guide harshly cuts him off. "What? We're negotiating, can't you see?" The receptionist gestures towards the main elevators and finishes, "Security is here already, look."
The guide's face sinks. "Oh no. I can't be seen here. We'll be fired!" She grabs the receptionist by the lapel and all but drags him away from the scene of the battle. Artemis spots an exit in the near corner, "Service stairs, over there!" The three of you run as fast as you can.
"I am going to have some very specific words for Maribelle if we make it out of this." You wonder again if Maribelle might not be better off running afoul of the law, rather than afoul of Artemis. You don't have much time to think on it, though. Artemis continues, "I'll lead the guards downstairs to buy you time; don't worry about me. Head upstairs and find Maribelle. Worry about finding Minerva only if Maribelle is safe." You assure Artemis that you'll do what you can, and begin to climb. A moment later, after you've lost line of sight, you feel and hear a loud, heavy impact. Has Artemis had her Pokemon destroy the stairs? You continue, as fast as your legs can take you, up the spiraling service staircase.
***
After what feels like another torturous eternity of climbing, the absurdity of the situation begins to set in. You're trespassing in the headquarters of one of the largest companies in the region; you've battled staff and you're accomplice at minimum to vandalism. All to track down a Pokemon you've never seen in a skyscraper you've never explored. How are you supposed to know which floors to check, anyway?
Weighing the risks, the two of you decide to message Maribelle. Can Acumen track texts sent from inside their building? You decide to be as vague as you can, and send a text asking what turn to take. You continue your climb for a while, sore as can be from the day's exertions, before you get a reply from Maribelle, saying simply, "112". You check the label of the next door you approach—124. You've overshot by so much...
You send a reply saying you're nearby, and begin heading back as best you can.
"Found you!" Maribelle says, as you approach the 112th landing. "I think I know- Hey, where's Artie?" You explain the fight in the lobby and Artemis' subsequent diversion, and Maribelle rubs her face with her hand. "She's gonna kill me, isn't she?"
***
The floor Maribelle leads you through is eeriely deserted. You estimate that you're near the top of the tower; on what is labeled as a 'leisure level'. Wide, doorless archways lead to such amenities as gym equipment, a pristine dining area, and even a screening room. You and Maribelle turn the floor upside-down, but turn up no sign of Minerva. You suggest that this might be the wrong floor. "This is where I heard Minerva. She has to be, or have been, here somewhere."
"What you heard was this, I'm afraid." An impeccably-trimmed Acumen employee steps into view from the service stairs, with practiced grace. He presses his phone, and a distinctive mechanical squeal plays.
"We were using the sound to look for you. Our employer has sent us to once more present her offer."
"And how did you think that would go?" Maribelle braces herself for a fight.
The bald employee continues, "Better than this, I'd hoped. If you're set on declining our offer, then you'll need to leave." The beturbaned employee wipes his glasses, then says, "If you'd like to hear her offer directly, we can take you to her without a fuss. You may yet find yourself swayed."
You're beginning to understand the nature of the offer being made to Maribelle. She steps forward and draws a ball. "No chance. I'm here to take Minerva home." You draw yours to match.
The bald employee draws his own ball without reaction. "That's not an option we're offering you."
