How should I get involved?

Very new to Pokemon, a friend got me into Emerald when I bought my Ds. More recently i've been thoroughly enjoying Pearl, but i've got no one living near me to play with, which is disheartening.

I'd love to get serious about player battles, try some tournaments, just learn how to play on a more competitive level. I'd consider myself average. I've looked up a lot of information, I understand breeding and all that. But i've got no real battling experience. I'd love to become a smogon regular so I could acquire some.

I'll admit I don't understand how to use Netbattle. And the apprentice boards say the current round of tutoring was canceled anyway. I would very much appreciate any suggestions on how to learn, or how to get involved here.

A bit too subtle for me, sorry. If i'm uninformed and this was a stupid thing to post, and i've missed a sticky that would help inform me, perhaps you could direct me towards it? I've read the stickies in this forum. I'm not trying to produce a generic introduction thread like they say to avoid. I'm trying to figure out where to go to learn or get in contact with people to help do that.

I apologize if this is in disregard to the rules. i'm unfamiliar to the forums, I'll try not to post as haphazardly in the future.

I see. There were some tutorials at the smogon's main site which explained thoroughly how to use Netbattle, but now, with the sites off, i don't know. Maybe you should start reading every topic in the Netbattle/Competitor section of this forum.

Alright, i'll do that. Thank you. I think on the whole I'd be more interested in getting involved in tournaments and such through the advance games and wifi if that happens, but netbattle would likely be a better place to practice. I'll look into it. Hopefully there will be another apprentice program wave sometime? Or was that canceled permanently?

Edit: I'm seeing reference to a smogon irc channel, but i'm not seeing the information on how to connect to it. Like what server to connect to. I'm sorry for asking stupid basics like this, but could I get the information on this? I'd love to get in there and chat with people.

go irc.dejatoons.net and the channel is #smogon.

Well, currently the site is being upgraded and all (thanks to dp again) so you should download Netbattle of some other site and just get the hang of it. Its not that complicated and pretty easy to get used to!

For the newer player nothing really beats a lot of battling experience with guidance from the better players. This guidance could be from the apprentice program (currently on hiatus), the teambuilding guide (on the main site, which is down but will be up soon). In leiu of that, battle a lot -- there's a thread on the DP Wifi forum for getting wifi battles -- and look at the posts and general advice given by people like Phuquoph, McGraw, badgeholders (those things under our names on the left part of the page) in general and of course the mods (anyone with a +, *, or ** by their name).

#smogon is on irc.dejatoons.net, there's a tutorial for getting there but the main page is down.

It's pretty refreshing to see someone ask what to do before just jumping in and posting without having any clue what they're doing. The apprentice program will be back with the release of Competitor (Netbattle's replacement).

Hehe, seems I came at a time where a lot of things are down for the count. It's a shame about the apprenticing program, that sounds very useful.

Thank you all for the help so far. I'm looking for an alternate spot to download netbattle, and I've used mirc before, so the smogon channel shouldn't be hard to connect to.

yeah sorry about that, it's coming back soon. hope you'll stick around until its back up :)

I agree. You should definitely go on #smogon, not only are there good pokemon discussions on there but it's also a great way to get into the community aspect of Smogon, i.e. meeting all the people who are the building blocks of the place. Of course, I recommend just hanging around in the chat for a little while without sending any lines just so you can get a feel for how it goes before jumping right in and saying something that might get you yelled at... but it looks like you're already intelligent enough to know to do that. (:

Same goes for Firebot. Lurking then posting is definitely the way to go. Hi there. (: In other news, the apprentice program may be down, but I am always hit-up-able for questions and help and such.
