How To Become Pro At Chaining

~ After 40, Shiny patches typically appear about 1 every 20 super repels. I think the ratio is a little better than that, but that's the safe estimate.

One in Fifty resets is the exact number you're looking for.

I don't quite get it... so this is what I have in mind:

1. Find the pokemon you want using Pokeradar
2. Keep resetting your Pokeradar untill you find a shiny patch. (Reset for 40-50times)
3. A shiiny patch will come out(?) then start the chain. Using the grid above, avoid etc etc etc.

Am I right? x_x

Find the Pokemon you want. Fight it, follow grid and kill the poke you want until your chain reaches 40, then stop and run back and forth resetting the radar and avoiding battles until a shiny patch shows up. Catch it and continue until you're bored or out of repels/pokeballs or you mess up. Hope that helps.

Sounds like it'd take hours to find a shiny Pokemon... oh well, I'd still try it atleast once >_>

No, you have to get your chain (with normal ones) to 40, using the grid etc. to get it that high, that's when the odds of a shiny patch max out. THAT is when you keep resetting the radar until a shiny patch shows up. It's possible to get a shiny patch earlier, but the odds are best at 40.

Right components, wrong order.

2. Start the chain. Using the grid above, avoid etc etc etc. 40-50times
3. Keep resetting your Pokeradar untill you find a shiny patch.

When you're first starting you won't get many chains past 20, but you'll definitely get better at it. It takes about 45 minutes to get a chain up to 40 (at the most), and 10 or 15 minutes to get a shiny on average after that.

I've tried chaining caterpies three times in a row now and they allways broke around 30-38 with a caterpie o.O. I did wonder why since the patches I choose had never break it for me earlier, but thanks to this:
Diesel said:
7. Patches touch the edge of the field, trees, or other obstacles are dangerous! This is very important, even if you get your pokemon it can still break your chain. This is because all the patches that would appear after you killed the pokemon can land outside the field. If you didn't understand that, just take my word for it. Because of this, corners are especially dangerous, as they leave less room for patches to appear.
Now I know why =). I've went into edges. But I still have to ^^;; Just hope my luck will be better so I can get myself a cool shiny caterpie someday xD
Will try again later after hatching some eggs for a breeding project.

my highest is 16 so far. i only read the gamefaqs one. this one does a much better job explaining the quadrants and where to go and not to go to break your chain on seemingly good patches.

thank you very much diesel. and i have added you on AIM so if im still struggling next week perhaps we can discuss it more specifically.

Really nice thread man I only caught one shiny using pokeradar the other one i hatched. Im gonna catch tons more thanks to this.

I skimmed through it, and it seems like a very good guide. I'll certainly move it to the Contrubutions & Corrections forum if you want. PM me whenever you decide it's worth being there and I'll move it for you.

I usually takes me about 45 min to get my chain up to 40, then you can start reseting.

It's a very good guide, I never knew about the favourable and unfavourable grid positions.

I have got my first shiny! Thank you Diesel. I stopped with 38 and reseted the pokeradar and a shiny starly Jolly! appeared. What pokes are more easy to catch with the pokeradar? I have two shinies right now, Starly (38) and Shellos (12!)

Trust - Awesome!! Wow, getting results already, that's amazing! Big props to you. Congrats.

Wow, okay, Blu's question exposes an obvious weakness, in that I haven't adequately described a few basics, as I feared. I'll update that section tomorrow. Thanks to those answering questions, I was really busy today, and frankly sick of this thread after working on it for a while. I'll be ready to improve it tomorrow. Thanks for all the comments, and your welcome (to all who said thank you, lol). Anyway, it's 4 AM and I'm going to bed. Happy hunting to all.

Apparently Shinx is pretty easy, probably because since there's places where it's the only electric type, and there's only two other kinds of Pokemon there, so Static helps and the odds are good anyway.

Never managed a shiny Shinx myself though, game made me walk further than I pressed, so my chain broke while I was recharging the Pokeradar.

You got lucky =D
I do advise to get the chain up to 40. IIRC you have more than double the chance at 40 compared to 38.

My last two chaines of 40(Houndoom and Kadabra) both ended up being broken by a stupid Ponyta before finding a shiny =[

You know what would be cool?
If someone decided to catch a bunch of synchronizers/pokemon with static/magnet pull and put them up here for trade.

This guide is absolutly amazing. It taught me about good/bad grids. After reading this a few times, I tried it myself and got a shiny machop =D

I will try today to chain other poke, but I don't know which one. Some sugestions? I have diamond, so I can't chain Slowpoke :( nor Houndoom. Furthermore, I can't chain a Dratini!! Dragonite's shiny sprite is great, but Dratini only appears in the water...

Some good sugestions? good shinies sprites?

Thanks in advice.

Diamond doesn't have very good exclusives to chain. Bronzong is pretty sweet, you could chain Bronzors. They aren't that hard either with a Magnet Puller.

Andreww - Another person got one already?! Wow, I guess this really is how to become pro at chaining. Congrats, nice work.

Chronos - That's a great idea. I have pretty much every one, and an AR. But I think what should happen is that useful ones should be made, like ones that have Hypnosis and other good catching moves, and are leveled.

Trust - There's a lot of great ones. I like to flip through Serebii and see which sprite owns the hardest.

I'll make a few updates here tonight.

Diesel, are you going to get this moved to C&C? You really should, with all the work you're doing on it!
