How to report serious incidents to Administrators: if you see something, say something.

The purpose of this thread is to walk you through the process of reporting serious instances of misconduct to the Pokémon Showdown! and Smogon Administration. Examples of incidents that should be reported along this avenue are:

  • Staff complaints
    • Pokémon Showdown!: Room Owners (#), Global Drivers (%), Global Moderators (@)
    • Smogon Forums: Moderators, Community Leaders
  • Sexual misconduct (any and all forms)
  • Grooming
  • Predatory behavior
  • Malicious Smogon- or PS-affiliated groups
    • For example, a Discord server with doxxing, egregious bigotry, illegal content.

Examples of incidents that should not be reported directly to the Admins include:

Pokémon Showdown!:
  • Someone was rude in a battle
  • Someone was rude in private messages
  • Appealing a punishment
  • Inappropriate username, status, or Pokémon nicknames.
In these instances you should submit a Help Ticket on Showdown by typing /ht in any chatroom (such as Lobby) or clicking here.

Smogon:
  • Someone was rude to me in a post.
  • Someone posted inappropriate content on the forums.
  • Someone is spamming the forums
In these instances you should use the report button at the bottom of posts.

If you wish to appeal an infraction, file an Infraction Appeal instead.

To file a report for Smogon and Pokémon Showdown! Administration, please gather the following information:
  • Who is involved?
    • Please list the Showdown and Smogon usernames of all users involved if possible.
  • When did it happen?
    • If it was a single instance, please note the date(s) on which the misconduct occurred to the best of your ability.
  • Where did it happen?
    • If it happened on Smogon Forums, please link to the offending threads or posts. You can provide screenshots of forum conversations.
    • If it happened on Showdown, please tell us if it occurred in private messages (PMs) or a chatroom (state which).
    • If it happened in a Discord server, please tell us the name of the server, the tag (example#0001) of the owner, and any relation the server has to Smogon or Showdown.
      • Please provide at least a few logs or screenshots (if possible) for each relevant person that demonstrates the scope of their behaviors. This makes it far easier for Admins to reach a solid understanding of the situation and maximize our efficiency.
  • What happened?
    • Please explain what happened as thoroughly as possible.
      • It's easier for Admins to understand the situation if you give a chronological overview first.
    • Provide as many logs and screenshots as possible.
      • Having evidence allows us to verify your claims and get a complete picture of what happened.
    • If there are other victims, please ask them for permission to share their name with Admins, then let us know who they are.
      • If someone has been engaging in misconduct with several users, we want to know about it and act accordingly. However, if someone is not comfortable sharing their story or speaking with Admins, do not do so on their behalf.
Once you have done this, please submit a post in the Admin Reports Forum. We will field your report and follow up with you as soon as possible. User safety is our top priority - these reports are taken extremely seriously. All reports filed are handled with utmost secrecy. Threads posted in the Admin Reports forum are only visible to the poster, PS! Admins, and Senior Staff (Smogon Super Mods and Admins, a list of whom can be found in this post). We never divulge this information with anyone and follow strict protocols to protect personally identifiable information (PII). If you have further questions about security and secrecy, please PM an Admin on Smogon, Showdown, or Discord.


How are reports handled?


An Administrator will see your report and read through it to get a cursory understanding of the situation. If appropriate, we'll bring the report to the attention of another relevant administrator (for example, if the situation involves competitive players, the Admin in charge of competitive play should be informed). We will go through the report thoroughly several times to make sure we have a full understanding of the situation. At this point we will likely reach out to the reporter for more information and to let them know that the report has been processed. Admins involved in handling the report will also discuss it in private to share thoughts and any prior relevant knowledge.

Once the Admins handling the report are up to speed and ready to proceed, we will usually seek information by speaking to other relevant individuals, investigating Discord servers, reviewing PM logs, etc. To reiterate, we will not share details of the report during this process. Once all of the pertinent information and evidence has been gathered, a final decision on the outcome of the report will be made. If we feel it appropriate to demote, ban, or otherwise punish a user, we will do so at this point. We will return to the reporter with our decision, thank them for reporting, and close the report.
