Background:

This is definitely one of the most fun teams I have ever built and even though it has a few clear weaknesses it is with it that I managed to push myself to the highest I've ever been on the ladder, so I thought to myself I have to share it with you guys. I always try to build my teams with at least one mon or set that I think is extra fun as it gives me more motivation for teambuilding and I think I definitely accomplished it with this one. This team centers around this Eject Button Hydrapple, set as I was looking for a way to use one of my favorite moves in the entire game, Recycle. It is with this double Regenerator core and a mon like Choice Band Lokix, who appreciates the free switch ins that the idea for this team was born.

Team Breakdown:

hydrapple.jpg

Hydrapple @ Eject Button

Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Body Press
- Giga Drain
- Recycle
- Endure

As I said in the introduction Hydrapple was the inspiration and first building block on the team. I think I can say with confidence that it is the weakest link on the team and that substituting a different mon could see immediate improvement but seeing as it was my inspiration for the team I wasn't exactly looking to replace it. That being said however Hydrapple has plenty of good matchups, it can nearly OHKO unsuspecting Kingambit with Body Press, is a great switch in to Ogerpon-W who it can hit with an Uno Reverse if it tries to U-turn and Great Tusk who can't KO with Ice Spinner even after the chip from Headlong Rush or Rapid Spin. It's great into Alomamola, any Dondozo that don't carry Avalanche, Iron Treads, Samurott-H, and it can deal with most Garg at least before Tera although not nearly as well as any Nasty Plot sets. It's main purpose however isn't really to win matchups one on one but rather to switch into attacks and eject button out giving you a free switch in to one of your other mons (usually Lokix). After losing its eject button Drapple serves as a great knock off absorber. Body Press and Giga Drain are necessary coverage, obviously Recycle is there to reuse the eject button and give you another free switch in later, and Endure helps if you arent able to survive a 2HKO because you can Recycle turn one and then Endure to survive and eject button out. There is definitely an arguement to run Dragon Tail in order to beat set up mons that can otherwise overpower you such as Gliscor, Zamazenta, and Dragonite but I opted to forgo that for the most fun set possible.

lokix.png

Lokix @ Choice Band
Ability: Tinted Lens
Tera Type: Bug
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- First Impression
- U-turn
- Knock Off
- Leech Life

Although Hydrapple was the inspiration for the team Lokix is definitely its backbone, it serves as the main wallbreaker and general source of damage for the team. Lokix is my Tera option in at least 80% of games and because of that sometimes I will choose to Tera early just to start getting the extra chip if I think it's worth losing the threat of Tera in the back. Obviously because of Tinted Lens Lokix can OHKO even most frail resists or mons that have taken enough chip damage so the idea is really to try to bring it in and nuke stuff as often as possible. I usually try to knock off any Rocky Helmet mon, such as Corv or Alo, early so that I can click moves more freely in the later game. Besides all the frail mons Lokix can obviously OHKO, Lokix can also be great for clicking Leech Life into some defensive mons that don't threaten it with huge damage such as Ting-Lu.

manaphy.png

Manaphy @ Leftovers
Ability: Hydration
Tera Type: Dragon
EVs: 252 HP / 40 Def / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Take Heart
- Acid Armor
- Scald
- Stored Power

Manaphy can be a very hit or miss pokemon as many people aren't used to seeing it and especially on the lower ladder I was statused many times in an attempt to stop my set up. Against some teams once you've eliminated the right pokemon it can sweep easily but in some matchups, especially against sun it can feel near useless. However its very solid bulk on both sides almost always gives it the opportunity to get necessary chip damage to enable Lokix. The speed EVs allow Manaphy to outspeed Great Tusk, Gliscor, Kyurem and other mons in that speed tier; they also crucially allow Manaphy to outspeed Tinkaton and click a damaging move before being Encored (one of the reasons Manaphy struggles so much into Ninetales). Often times in matchups where the opponent has a clear obstacle to a Manaphy sweep that they aren't giving up Manaphy finds the most use as a status spreader being able to get burns against a plethera of physical attackers or even bulky special mons. Manaphy is great as another check to Great Tusk, Iron Treads, Gliscor, Cinderace, Landorus-T and can soak up +1 hits from mons like Dragonite and Kyurem and threaten them with a burn. Manaphy also has a good matchup into another mon this team struggles with in Corviknight as it can burn it or set up on it without taking much in return. Behind Lokix this is maybe my second most Terastalized mon in games where I think it will make the difference in being able to sweep.

irontreads.png

Iron Treads @ Leftovers
Ability: Quark Drive
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Heavy Slam

Most of the time that I build with Iron Treads I find it feels underwhelming and quickly switch back to Tusk, but on this team Treads really pulls its weight and the Steel typing feels like a must defensively. Iron Treads serves as our hazard removal on a team with no boots so it's a vital part in almost every game you play, it has amazing matchups into Raging Bolt, Glowking, Iron Crown, and Gholdengo all of which the team struggles with mightily otherwise. Initially I ran Ice Spinner and then Knock Off before Heavy Slam, but I changed it after struggling into Ribombee, Ninetales-A and Grimmsnarl.

glowking.png

Slowking-Galar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Def / 240 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Ice Beam
- Psyshock
- Sludge Bomb
- Flamethrower

There are three things in life that are inevitable: Death, Taxes and Glowking being on pretty much every team I build. Initially I had a Heavy Duty Boots pivot set which is what I almost always default to because this is a team that appreciates free switch ins and Chilly Reception is such a great move, but when I decided to add Flamethrower for help dealing with Corv and felt that mayble Glowking and Hydrapple were stepping on each others feet, I swapped to an AV set and added Ice Beam for coverage after dropping Ice Spinner on Treads. Otherwise Glowking works amazingly with Drapple seeing as usually one can tank the moves the other doesn't like to take so with some good prediction you can almost always get them both back to healthy. The rest of the set needs no introduction, everyone knows AV Glowkings purpose, switch into any special attacker, eat it up, fish for poisons, repeat.

ironvaliant.png

Iron Valiant @ Booster Energy
Ability: Quark Drive
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Moonblast
- Close Combat
- Knock Off
- Destiny Bond

Pretty stardard Iron Val set to round out the team. Val is great into fast mons or sweepers that Lokix has trouble dealing with such as Zamazenta, Kyurem, Weavile and Dragonite (since E-Speed usually goes before first impression) and even mons that it can kill it can often trade itself with thanks to Destiny Bond. It's amazing into Kingambit and really serves as a one time get out of jail free card for the team. I've thought a lot about running Encore instead of one of its moves but I just haven't been able to justify it. Lastly I choose Fairy Tera because I found myself more often needed the extra damage against physically defensive mons than to flip type matchups.

Threats:

ninetales.png

Sun: Against sun teams Glowking becomes the most important mon on your team by a longshot. Your number one priority becomes keeping it safe until the end while still using it to get damage and hopefully some poisons, and from there you just have to play like normal but extra cautious. As I said before Manaphy becomes nearly useless besides trying to burn Great Tusk so sacking it can be ok. This match up is definitely very winnable but can feel like an uphill battle.

grimmsnarl.png

Screens: Screens is perhaps the worst matchup for this team because it allows set up mons to be much more safe from Lokix's First Impression which it obviously can't click more than once without switching out. Against these teams all you can do is try to kill their screener ASAP or at least knock off its light clay, get rocks up early for the extra chip on their sweepers and be extra careful with your positioning as to not let them get a free switch in when its going to cost you the game.

araquanid.png

Webs: The other perhaps worst matchup for this team is webs as without any Heavy Duty Boots it can be a nightmare to remove them and especially against mons like nasty plot gholdengo you can insta lose if not prepared due to Iron Treads being slower on switch in. If webs are up but the web setter is dead it is usually worth it to Tera Treads if it means getting rid of them right away. Usually I try to deny webs immediately except against Araquanid where I will often just lead Manaphy immediately and go for game unless there is some clear obstacle as the two turns it takes to set up webs can be enough to snowball into a win. I especially love when against Araquanid they allow me to get to max Def, SpD and SpA hoping to Endure + Custap Endeavor me only to see me click Acid Armor one more time than necessary.
weavile.png

Weavile: Because of its ability to massively threaten both of our defensive anchors Weavile is a massive threat. On top of this even if I expect a knock off I can't switch in to Hydrapple for a free switch in as Eject Button gets knocked off before it works. Lokix and Iron Val with its booster intact both can OHKO weavile but it is still incredibly difficult to deal with as besides the first switch in to knock of with val, Weavile can basically get a free kill whenever it comes in. Because of this I often will Tera Drapple and Body Press to easily OHKO Weavile and just be done with it, but losing out on the Lokix Tera damage is very noticable.

blaziken.png

Blaziken: Blaziken is a massive threat to the team for its unique combination of hard to deal with things in its kit. This dumb chicken, my favorite mon, is the biggest single bane to my team. Like any mon with protect it becomes an immediate issue because Lokix can't click first impression not to mention the fact that both its types resists it anyway (another reason gholdengo under webs is so threatening). After a swords dance Blaziken can OHKO Manaphy with Close Combat and the rest of the team bar Hydrapple with Flare Blitz, but since Hydrapple can't threaten meaningful damage back anyway its hardly an issue. Basically in order to beat this mon you have to either not let it set up or Tera with Treads and hope it doesnt click Flare Blitz. Perhaps because of these reasons a Psychic Tera on Manaphy would be better plus also to boost its Stored Power but luckily because I don't see Blaziken too often I haven't changed it yet.

Conclusion + Acknowledgements:

If you read this far I want to take the time to thank YOU the reader for listening to me babble about my team. It really is very fun to play and I recommend every try it! I would also appreciate any and all feedback that anyone has to offer or any questions regarding the team, I had a lot of fun building it and telling you about it here in this RMT.
-Until next time, Blaze out.
