Idea: adopt a Pokémon for children caught in war

Okay, so we’re not going to go into the specifics of the reasons for any one conflict.

I think we could all agree, whatever side we are on, that children being caught up in the situation of war is awful.

Humanitarian assistance doesn’t just extend to food and water, it can also be books, and toys, and comforts to help children through their traumas.

Long and short of it, I’m thinking of a way in which fans of Pokémon could “adopt” or “sponsor” a Pokémon/plushie and then that plushie in a bag with books, colouring materials, etc, could be distributed to a charity or charities to get to those children in need.

Thoughts? Bad idea? Good idea? How would you achieve that? Etc etc

I’m just fed up of sitting effectively on the sidelines not able to do much except watch death and destruction globally and the magic of Pokémon is being made to feel less alone through the games and characters, so…

Have at it, does this have legs, or is this daft?

While Orange isn't the best place on Smogon for serious discussion, the comfort of not feeling forced into solitude because of a Pokemon species or few is the message the series is attempting to convey, disregarding it being only a multi-billion dollar toy commercial for a moment. The point of having 1025 species in the Pokemon world is that there is something for anyone, even if some species are acquired tastes.

Even an adult's personal depression between COVID and 2023 like mine was somewhat comforted by the magic of this yellow rodent series, even if I do not appreciate the source material as much as I used to. Some younger adults might appreciate the comfort as well.

Keep in mind that Pokemon might not be that popular outside of North America, East Asia (which includes Japan), western Europe, or Australia.

I'm not sure if your adoption/sponsor idea can be done, but there are a few relief organizations and programs focused on helping kids caught in military conflicts:

* Toys for Tots: If you're in the US you may have heard of this program (especially around Christmas), but what you may not know is that its run by the Marine Corps Reserve. It's more known for helping kids within the States but they also do oversea relief. They notably accept toys, though look to be the only one from a quick Google search.

* UNICEF

* War Child/Children in Conflict

* Gleaning for the World (GFTW)

There are a few more, but these four are the safest I feel posting here.

I’m a UKer, though I am grateful for the signposting to these charities to get an idea of what they do and what’s needed. Thank you.

My principle in this is that I want to try and organise something that is probably done as an add on to an existing (non private or commercial) group, principally in three specific territories, Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine. Something whereby fans of Pokemon can come together to do something good.
