General Introduce yourself!

Hey guys, I'm Dennis and I've been playing Pokémon for 14 years.
After getting into competitive Pokémon when X&Y came out I hopped on Showdown quite regularly and acquired a lot of knowledge about the game. I realized that I was relatively decent at the game and wanted to learn more through tournaments and experience this amazing community with people who share the same passion as I do.

Hey Dennis, welcome to Smogon. I've also been playing Pokémon games for about 15 years. I assume you also started with R/B/Y? Yellow was my first game, follow by Gold and Ruby. Are you more into Pokémon Showdown! or Wi-Fi? For PS! tournaments you should check out this page and for Wi-Fi tourneys you should go here. Nice knowing you! And if you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a PM or two :)

What's up SlashingScizors, welcome to the site. First of all, dope username and signature. Scizor is definitely one of the Pokemon I really like (since Generation II is my favorite) and it's cool to see Scizor's evolution throughout the years. You forgot Generation VI though! Oh, and what do you think of Scizor's Mega Evolution? When it comes down to battling, just like you I also really like UU and PU, but I barely play it anymore. I'm more into Random Battles these days, as I have almost no time to actually play anymore. Hence I also kind of dropped Wi-Fi battling, but whenever I have the time I grab my DS to do a battle or two. Wi-Fi over Showdown in terms of gameplay and enjoyment in my opinion. But maybe we could do some battles on Showdown if you are down? Would be cool.

Are there any specific reasons you joined Smogon. Like, are you looking for places in particular? If yes, let me know and I'll show you around!

So yeahhh, hi everyone. I've been a huge but casual Pokemon fan as long as i can remember, like I can sorta remember playing Crystal. I just learned about competitive Pokemon pretty recently, and my thirst for competition mixed with my love for the game led me here. My attempts at getting a grip on things just by reading random articles and grinding PS have been pretty fruitless, and there's a lot I'm completely clueless about, so I'm really looking for someone with the patience to help me out.

He-yo! I'm SSF :)! I'm a noob but I've just made myself a forum-the Mantine Appreciation Club, UU. Im a uu competitor! Please check out my forum, give feedback and follow if you want :). Thanks guys-mantine forever!

I've been lurking on the forums for a really long time, but I've finally decided to make an account mainly so I can attempt to get reqs to ban shadow tag tbh.

I've played mons on shoddy and PO in the past, but with the advent of gen 6 I've found myself increasingly interested in competitive play. I'm inexperienced with the current meta, but i'm by no means a rookie! Looking forward to start competing!

Hi there Threw, welcome! I totally feel you, learning competitive at the beginning can be pretty difficult. If you ever need anyone to help teach you, feel free to message me and I'd be happy to help when I have time. There are a lot of people here active in this thread as well who would be more than willing to assist you, so don't worry, we'll have you learning in no time :).

Hi SSF, I'm a fan of UU myself, although I'm not as familiar with the tier as I wish I was. Will definitely check out your forum if I get the time :). Hope you enjoy your time at Smogon!

Hi 1framlink, glad you finally decided to post! I've honestly never had the time or patience to get reqs for any of the suspect tests, so props to you for making the effort to have your opinion heard. Gen VI also happened to be the one that really got me interested in competitive Pokemon. Maybe we can practice against one another some time :)?

Thanks dude! :) We should battle sometime!

Hi everyone
I'm new here but I'm not new to pokemon games. I clearly remembered my first pokemon game was Yellow version on Gameboy and I was possessed by the cute Pikachu following me everywhere. I've played RGBY on gameboy, and Gold on GBA, but there were never my own games or consoles, I just borrowed my friend's in summer/winter vacations.
I didn't play 3rd gen and following gens since I grew up and busy school life, after a few years I played Pearl on PC simulator. I didn't play for a long time since then.
I started to play a ROM hack version early this year on my smartphone, which was called "漆黑的魅影", it is a Chinese version since I'm a Chinese:) And more importantly it brought me to my childhood memories about pokemon, and then I tried several other ROM hacks like Glazed, Victory Fire... they were all very good hacked ROMs!
In September this year I was in a trip to US so I bought a 3DSXL and X+AS, I don't have much time for my Xbox or PC games now but I can still make some use of my scattered free time on 3DS so Pokemon game are my first choice XD.
My favorite pokemon will always be Pikachu because it is an idol which brings my memory back to my childhood and also the logo of pokemon culture.
I like playing with friends but now I hardly can find anyone around playing the same games any more, also I live in China, if anyone here comes from China or is interested to make a Chinese friend, I will be very happy too :-D

PS: I was a casual player so I didn't play much competitive though, so I guess I have to learn a lot from Smogon. I feel very clueless for so many different categories, game rules, and the combination of pokemons for different tactics... I simply don't know where to start..

Hey BourneJason, welcome to the site. Or should I say Jason Bourne?! Matt Damon, is that you?! I wish. Anyway, Yellow version was also my first Pokémon game and Generation I is definitely among my favorites. Unlike you I was never really possessed by the cute Pikachu. I never talked to it and I thought the "Pikaaaaa!!" was really scary, as if it was crying out loud (especially when that sound played in Lavender Town ;_;). Personally I never really enjoyed those Pokémon ROM hacks, I don't know why. But that was years ago, I might try them out again and see for myself. I have watched PokéTubers play those ROM hacks and they made it fun to watch. You are actually the very first person I meet whose favorite Pokemon is Pikachu. Glad you enjoyed Yellow so much. Are you also stoked for the R/B/Y VC remakes? Since I am!

Really nice to meet you. If you need help with the basics and fundamentals, just shoot me a PM. I've been into competitive play for ages so I can most probably help you out with anything. The only thing I'll need from you are specific questions (or just you saying how much of the basics you already know). Other than that, if you want to talk to some other people I can recommend the users Chesty, Dr Ciel, Erai14, QueBien, InfernapeTropius11, or TheHoodedGamer. These people are very nice in my opinion, and they can probably also help you out with all your questions.

Greetings everyone!

I'm looking to break back into having some competitive pokemon matches after not having played seriously since Gen 3. Hopefully we can all work together and have some fun matches while improving our skills at the same time!

Nice to meet you too, Fluke!
Actually Pikachu is more of a mascot which reminds me of good memories, although it is very frail both in game and anime, lol
If I need to pick up a favorite one, I will choose Breloom becuase she is the reason I came to Smogon.
I just finished all stories and sidquests in AS, in which game I've used her as a wonderful pokemon catcher. After beaten the game, I was trying to breed decent Jolly Shroomish and see if she can do decent battles too, search results brought me here:)
I've read the competitive battling basics and what I am trying to do now is either to construct a SandStorm team or a team involving Technician Breloom. I've heard of weather team/trick room team/Eevee team quite a lot, but I've never used any and I've only battle with random passerby 3 times, 2 lost, 1 disconnected...
I think what I need most is to organize a team and dig into the battlefield to raise some experience, otherwise all talk is useless.

How about recommend a SandStorm team or a team involving Technician Breloom to me as my start of battling journey?
btw, I don't know how to PM you...

Hello Vohras, welcome. Are you into Pokémon Showdown! or Wi-Fi? I personally enjoy Wi-Fi more, but I also like to jump in and out of a battle quickly, hence I also really like Showdown. I'm looking forward to battle you. I'd like to know, do you already have some knowledge of the basics and the metagame? If not, I can explain you everything while we're battling (on Showdown).

Enjoy your stay! :)

Hi guys, nice to be here.
I've been playing Pokemon since very beginning (well, at least in Europe). Starting with Red on emulator and going through all generations and PTCG at some point. Currently I'm playing Omega Ruby and I want to move to competitive but I have no clue about it. Although I know was IV, EV etc. is and how to breed, I'm completely lost when it comes to team building. Basically that's the reason I'm here - to gain and improve my competitive skills.
Fav Pokemon? Hard to say because I have lots of favorites. Flareon maybe? There is some sentiment left for this guy from my beginnings with Pokemon.
If you find any mistakes - I beg your pardon, english is not my native language.

Hey everybody, I've been playing non competitively since Y, mostly trying to fill up my dex, my plan is, if I fill it up some day, move to the maison and thne maybe to competitve haha, for some reason I keep checking smogon though, and today I was bored and decided to join, cheers!

past 10 years i'm watching pokemon!!!!
first time i got 2 play pokemon ..........
Hey Kai, welcome! If I understand it right this is your first time playing Pokémon games? That's awesome. Which games exactly are you playing? And do you enjoy them? I personally haven't watched as much Pokémon anime to be honest. I have watched the first two seasons, along with the first movie. I also watch Pokémon Origins (which I really liked as well) and a few random episodes from different seasons. I recently downloaded all the seasons, so I may watch then whenever I get the time. Anyhow, let me know more about yourself, I'm curious!

What's up yuppieflu, welcome to the site. I have also been playing Pokémon since the very beginning. Well, not really since the 'very' beginnen. I started with Yellow and not with Red or Blue, so technically I didn't start from the very beginning. But still, it's Generation I. And I'm actually glad I skipped those because of the disgusting sprites. I am really hyped for the R/B/Y VC remakes. Definitely going to get Yellow!

Since you said you need help with building your teams, I suggest you take a look at the Rate My Team section. Be sure to read the rules first though, since they're very important. In the Rate My Team section (RMT for short), players are generous enough to rate teams and give very useful feedback. People will explain what works and what doesn't, and you'll definitely learn a lot from it. If you have any questions about the basics and fundamentals, just shoot me a PM and I'll gladly help you out.

Hope to see you around :)

Hello Elrethiel, welcome. I personally can't imagine not having experienced all the Pokémon games since R/B/Y throughout the years. Have you ever played earlier games? Graphically they are nothing compared to Generation VI games, but it's where it all started for me. Gameplay wise they're freaking amazing in my opinion. Also, if you ever need help with competitive play or with filling up your Pokedex, just hit me up! I completed my living dex a while ago so I can help you with any Pokemon. I have also been into competitive play for ages, so I pretty much know all the in and outs.

Enjoy your time around here!

Thanks Fluke, I've always liked anime, and used to watch the original show in college way back when Ash got Pikachu (you can probably try to figure out my age from that), but I'm from Colombia and well, getting the console back there is an expensive investment (it's worth about 3 times a minimum monthly wage) and the games aren't cheap either, I recently moved to US, a friend convinced me to give it a try and I've been hooked ever since, I have 200+ hours on my copy of X, around 80 on Alpha Sapphire and I'm not even sure where the time went haha.

That's awesome to hear, haha. I also had many hours on my Omega Ruby game since Generation III is among my favorites. When I received OR I instantly became addicted again. If you would ever want to do a fun match or two, let me know! Already looking forward to it :)

Hi im 1cefoc and im new here. Lol like anyone here's in another line of work.

Any who, my favorite pokemon is either Klingklang or Slurpuff, mostly because 1 turn, turns them into a monster.

I dont know what PS means.

I like this site because of its expansive poke-fandom.

I plan to learn more about the metagame here, as for what I have problems with, would be team building, and id love a small recomendation to how to learn.

As for my favorite game? That woul be the card game and pokemon X.

Hi everyone!

Hi everyone!
Hey 1ceFox, welcome! I understand Slurpuff is one of your favorite Pokemon. It indeed is a monster after one turn of setting up. But I don't really see why you picked Klingklang. Whenever I get it on Random Battles it sucks. I'm assuming you are referring to the move "Shift Gear"? The move that raises your Attack by one stage and your Speed by two stages? The Speed is nice yes, but after the boost its Attack stat is still pathetic. And I always miss Gear Grind.. I don't know, maybe it's just me. Anyway, PS stands for Pokémon Showdown. It is a Pokémon battle simulator which allows you to play Pokémon battles online. You can play with randomly generated teams, or build your own. And everything is fully animated. Not as nicely animated as the actual Generation VI games, but it's still nice. It's really fun in my opinion since you have the option to chat with your opponent, and because you can quickly jump in and out of battles, something that's not really possible on Wi-Fi.

Since you are having problems with team building you should take a look at the Rate My Team section. It's a section where experienced players rate teams and give useful feedback. They will explain what works and what doesn't, and you'll definitely learn a lot from it when it comes down to competitive play and team building in general. Before you post, be sure to read the rules though. If you have any questions about the basics and fundamentals or the metagame, just shoot me a PM and I'll gladly help you out. I've been into competitive play for a long time so I can probably teach you something. Maybe we can do it while we're doing a battle on PS?! Would be cool.

One useful place for every newcomer on these forums is the Smogon Simple Questions thread. It's a thread for any forum related question. Or if you want to get more personal, just PM me, Chesty, Dr Ciel, Erai14, QueBien, InfernapeTropius11, or TheHoodedGamer. These are people that know a lot about Smogon and anything Pokémon related, and they also don't mind a nice conversation. So don't be shy and let's get to it!

Im not quite sure why but i feel like hes awsome after one setup. Or maybe its his look. In any case thanks for answering.

Also, yes i do use pokemonshowdown, someone told me earlier sorry.

And i will check the rate my team section, thanks!

Ps. I also love furfrou(cool tank) and that psychic and dark pokemon.

EDIT: I forgot to add all this stuff.

Furfrou is indeed great. Insanely good defensive Pokemon with access to Cotton Guard. And the Dark-type and Psychic-type Pokemon? Do you mean Inkay and/or Malamar? I really like Malamar, especially with the Contrary Ability. After using Superpower one or two times you're basically unstoppable!

I know right?

Its like they are specifically made for awsomeness.

However im still gonna hold of on using them, just until i get some experience with these practice teams smogon offers.
