Hello everyone!
I'm a returning Pokemon player, jumping back into the fray with ORAS after being out of the loop for about one generation. This time, I've also decided to give competitive battling a try! Which is what brought me to Smogon. I've always known Smogon to be the premiere hub for competitive Pokemon battlers, so I thought I'd join the community now and get a start on learning while I get some real-life obligations squared away. Once those are taken care of (in the coming month), you can be sure that I'll be participating here in earnest, and taking advantage of Battling 101 and all the other great resources that Smogon offers. :3

Hey there, lunatic42! I hope you're having a good day! Mudkip is one of my favourite mons too! I chose it as my starter in Pokemon Emerald (have you played it before?) and it really helped me against Wattson because of the Electric Immunity, and I just spammed Mud Shot all through the battle.
For breeding/trading questions and requests, check out this section of the forums, or visit the WiFi Room on Pokemon Showdown where trades and giveaways happen every now and then. You might also want to check out Trading Threads, where users put their Pokemon up for grabs.

It's great to see that you've got back into Pokemon. I can assure you that competitive battling will be really fun! There are a full range of strategies to explore, as well as battle styles - all you need to do is find which one suits you best! You can check out this section for Competitive Discussion. You really don't need to contribute to the threads, but you can simply "watch" them, keeping you up to date with new posts. This will help you get a better understanding of what Competitive Battling is really like, which Pokemon are viable and which are not in certain metagames, which strategies suit different Pokemon, etc.
Battling 101 is a fantastic way to improve your battling skills, where you "learn from the best of the best". I've never tried it out, but I might think about signing up for it!

Hi guys! I started Gen 5 about a year ago. I never realized I sucked until I found Smogon, my source used to be bulbapedia but I randomly clicked on Smogon just to see what it was. Well, I haven't been on bulbapedia in a while and Smogon's Strategy Pokedex is what really got me into playing mons. I'm pretty decent now though even though I've only been playing competitively for a couple months.
BTW I have teams for almost every tier, but I suck at most of them... most of the teams were made hastily and without much thought. However, I'm actually play UU/part-time Uber player so if u want to play me PM me on Showdown!!!! My name is the same as it is here Alpha Kittens

It's great that you're enjoying competitive battling! I don't really play UU or Ubers; I play the Monotype Metagame (I specialise in the Normal and Psychic type!), and a bit of LC sometimes. I also had a team for every tier, but I decided it was a bad idea when I lost every single battle I had fought. Then I realised that it wasn't just about the Pokemon I used. It was about how I played. Blaming the Pokrmon is one of my bad habits, when, in reality, it's me that's bad, and not the Pokemon. That's why I lurked around the CT room on main. I understood more about viability, which helped me create better teams.
I'd actually love to have a battle with you. Leave a post on my page whenever you're online, and we'll meet up on main or on a side server.

Hello there! My name is Seal. I am a nerd. I lost interest in Pokemon when X and Y came out because being 12 or 13 when it came out I didn't have enough money to buy a 3DS... 16 now and nothing's changed! Except that I'm way back into Pokemon I just haven't played XY or ORAS but know most of the newer Pokemon in the games. My earliest Pokemon memories is driving home from Sydney with my face in Pokemon Gold asking my mother for more batteries. I also look back to my Year 6 days where me and a friend would always battle each other and he would destroy me with this Garchomp, so I was a genius and taught a Marowak ice beam. Yep. I really did that. I've really become interested in the competitive scene of all the main tiers (OU, UU, VGC etc.) and didn't realise how little and sucky I am at Pokemon. Years it'll take to get a hang of it but I'm ready! :)

After a while, I decided to finally make an account here lol.
i'm not particularly new to the competitive scene, but I definitely haven't been playing for a while (around 3 or 4 months)
I'm always looking for ways to improve though, since im not really that good lol

Welcome to Smogon, .Yusuf.!
Don't worry about not being overly familiar with competitive Pokemon! A lot of people aren't very good at it, and that's why Smogon has its own tutoring programme. The link to it is here. You should check it out, and maybe when the next round is about to start, you can signup. You should also check out the Competitive Tutoring room on main, and hang out there. By the way, what tiers are you interested in playing? Some of the official tiers include OU [overused], NU [never used] and LC [little cup], as well as Other Metagames which are tiers that were made by other users. The tiers I mostly play are LC and Monotype, which is a tier where all your Pokemon share the same type. It's a really fun meta - you should try it!
Competitive Battling isn't something that is easy to master, and does take some time, though, so don't worry too much if you are finding it hard.

I've played OU once or twice; it's a fun metagame. Monotype is a really fun meta, and this is a really good article to check out. If you need any help with the tier, feel free to PM me, and we can maybe work together and battle.
If by "in the game", you mean Pokemon Games, I stopped at Black/White 2. The reason was because I used rom emulators to play Pokemon Red - Black 2, and when X and Y got released, they were 3DS games, and not DS Games, so I couldn't download a rom emulator, sadly. Since then, I've been playing on Pokemon Showdown.

Hi Bryan3232, welcome! Glad you could join us! So, you mentioned you may need some competitive Pokemon help and help building a team? No problem, there are many options! First of all, you can visit the Competitive Tutoring room on Pokemon Showdown's main server for all the competitive help you can get. There are also things on the forums, like the Battling 101 program, for instance. You can sign up to receive a tutor to help! Also, if you do end up having questions, visit the Smogon Simple Questions thread for an answer as soon as possible. Welcome, once again! Hi PhoenixBlade, welcome to Smogon! Is there a certain area on the forums that you are looking to get into? For example, battling, trading, arts, competitive discussions, tournaments, etc. If you're looking for a specific place, perhaps we can help you find it! Also, if you have questions, you should head over to the Smogon Simple Questions thread to get an answer ASAP. Hope to hear from you! You did mention you wanted people to perhaps rate and see your teams, there is a place here for that! The Rate My Team forum is specifically just for rating and receiving feedback on your teams.

Okay, awesome! PhoenixBlade, all you need to do is head on over to the Rate My Team section on the forums here to find the tier and post your team for everyone to see! But! Be sure to follow the guidelines for posting teams! The rules for posting teams can be found here. Be sure to follow them! Also, have you ever been on Pokémon Showdown? I know you were interested in tournaments, and they have a room just dedicated to tournaments! You should check it out sometime!

Hi Smogon! Long time reader, first time poster. I've been a fan since Red and Blue launched (Pokemon 20!!), beaten at least one game in every generation (usually more) but never got into the meta game...Also my DS Lite died from water damage so it's been a while...but when I saw ORAS, I got back into the game with a new DS. I just beat AS and X, and after poking around here, I have my first team. I'm struggling with finding battles online though - especially legit OU battles. Smogon itself is overwhelming too, though I found the battle request thread. As a newcomer, what are the three to five things to know/explore here? Does anyone know if the majority of Smogon users actively go to official tournaments? Just trying to get a sense of the community.
Hello colonelkcs, welcome! Regarding your issue about trying to find matches and tournaments online. Have you ever been on Pokémon Showdown? They have a room dedicated specifically for tournaments, and some sites like challonge.com is used on PS. Were you more interested in tournaments on the forums, or more interested in tournaments that happen on Pokémon Showdown? Hope to hear from you. By the way, you can find tons of online matches on Pokémon Showdown as well.
Thanks Deetah. Never had been to Pokemon Showdown - just googled it and it looks like something to check out for sure. I was thinking of tournaments like Nintendo/Pokemon Company tournaments...if that's a thing? I think I'm most interested in playing through the actual games though, as opposed to on a site. Does PS or challonge.com facilitate in-game battles, or is it more/less a simulator online though?
Pokémon Showdown does have an In-Game room, but the site is more of a battle simulator, to test out teams and such. Challenge.com is just a fun place for user-created tournaments, not really in-game. Smogon does hold official tournaments, but if you want in-game battles and such I think it's better to search online in the games themselves.

I've done the initial research, I've got the rough hang of breeding and EV training, and I've been practicing in the Battle Maison to learn the Pokemon and moves I'm unfamiliar with.

I think I've got a rough handle on it, luckily I got a Ditto with 5 perfect IV's through Wondertrade. The only problem is it has the lowest possible speed, and that seems to get chosen by the destiny knot rather frequently. Oh well.
As for other questions, I'm sure I've got a bunch, but none that I can think of at the moment.

I'm a long time lurker, and have been a player of Pokémon since Emerald. I'm a bit of a hard core breeder, and tend to terrify those I know with how organized my PC boxes are. I even went through the work necessary to breed perfect dittos of varying natures to create my teams.
Just under 500 hrs in ORAS, over 1,000 eggs hatched, etc. I've heard of showdown, but I've sadly never really shown any interest in it.
That aside, I'll supply my Friend Code and all that fun soon enough for trades/WiFi battles! That, and a team or two for rating in the rate my team section. It'd be great to get some input as to how I can improve, and areas of weakness!
