Jynx

[Overview]

Jynx has an excellent base Special Attack stat of 115 and a base stat of 95 in both Speed and Special Defense. This might make Jynx look like a great sweeper, but she is held back by a horrible base Defense stat of 35, making her extremely vulnerable to almost any physical attack coming her way, especially the common Sucker Punch (which she has an unfourtunate weakness to). Her low HP stat doesn't help her either. On top of that, Jynx has always been overshadowed by other Psychic-type Pokemon such as Alakazam, even with her great Special Attack stat, and this generation is no different. UU's newest additions bring about even more Psychic-type Pokemon that outclass Jynx in some way, including Mew, Celebi, and Azelf. All three are faster than Jynx, while both Mew and Celebi are bulkier, and Azelf hits way harder. Jynx is weak to Stealth Rock as well, but she has something up her sleeve that the aforementioned Pokemon don't: Lovely Kiss. With Lovely Kiss, Jynx has a way easier time setting up Nasty Plot or Calm Mind while her opponent is sleeping, making her a great late-game sweeper and potent hail abuser.

[SET]
name: Nasty Plot
move 1: Nasty Plot
move 2: Ice Beam
move 3: Psyshock / Focus Blast
move 4: Lovely Kiss / Substitute
item: Leftovers / Life Orb
ability: Forewarn
nature: Timid
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
ivs: 30 SpA / 30 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

This set is all about boosting Jynx's Special Attack with Nasty Plot. Get Jynx onto the field, either when one of your Pokemon have fainted or come in on a resisted or weak special move. With Lovely Kiss, setting up becomes much easier, as your opponent's Pokemon is asleep. Substitute serves a similar purpose, as it protects Jynx from damage and prevents status. Ice Beam is Jynx's main STAB move, hitting hard off of Jynx's great Special Attack. Psyshock is a reliable secondary STAB move that takes care of Chansey, and while Focus Blast still hits Chansey for super effective damage, it also hits Steel-type Pokemon, who resist Jynx's STAB moves.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

You can also opt to use Hidden Power Ground to hit Victini hard, as it resists the listed moves, while hitting Steel-type Pokemon hard as well. The IVs listed gives Hidden Power Ground, and also maximize Jynx's bulk and Speed. Shadow Ball is also an option to hit Victini and Slowbro, who also resist Jynx's other moves. Grass Knot or Energy Ball can also be used to hit Slowbro and Empoleon for neutral damage, something that Shadow Ball can't do. Blizzard is an option if you use Jynx on a hail team. In hail Blizzard has 100% accuracy and hits much harder than Ice Beam. If you want to gamble a little for more power, Blizzard can be used outside hail, but it's not recommended. Life Orb makes Jynx hit harder, but shortens her lifespan. Leftovers is the superior item, allowing Jynx to recover health while setting up when your opponent's Pokemon is asleep.

Since there are many Pokemon in UU with at least 100 base Speed, these Pokemon must be removed before Jynx can come in and set up. Rapid Spin support is a must, and Hitmontop is the best choice to provide this, resisting Rock- and Dark-type moves that Jynx is weak to, while Jynx resists Psychic-type moves that Hitmontop is weak to. Suicune makes an excellent partner, as it resists Fire- and Steel-type moves that Jynx is weak to, and it takes physical moves with ease as well, protecting Jynx from being KOed because of her horrible Defense stat. However, believe it or not, Reflect can actually help Jynx survive some neutral physical attacks. Uxie makes a good partner, as it can set up Stealth Rock, which can help score some extra KOs, as well as dual screens. It would also be a great idea to remove any Pursuit users before bringing Jynx out since the move usually spells doom for her.

[SET]
name: Calm Mind
move 1: Calm Mind
move 2: Ice Beam / Psyshock
move 3: Substitute
Move 4: Lovely Kiss
item: Leftovers
ability: Forewarn
nature: Timid
evs: 200 HP / 56 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Unlike the Nasty Plot set, Jynx now takes on a more defensive role with Calm Mind. After one boost, weaker special moves from Pokemon such as Milotic won't break through one Substitute, and after several boosts, Jynx can survive even the most powerful moves from Pokemon such as Moltres. Lovely Kiss puts slower Pokemon and switch-ins to sleep to give Jynx an easier time setting up. As an attacking option, Ice Beam is the preffered choice, as no type of Pokemon is immune to it, but Psyshock hits Chansey way harder than Ice Beam and takes care of the many Fighting-type Pokemon in the tier. However, Chansey isn't Jynx's biggest problem, as Ice Beam 3HKOes her at +6.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The listed EVs give Jynx some bulk, while allowing her to Speed tie with Arcanine and other base 95 Speed Pokemon in the tier. Jynx has several other attacking options. Focus Blast hits Dark- and Steel-type Pokemon hard. Hidden Power Ground hits Steel-type Pokemon as well, but takes care of Victini, who resists Jynx's STAB moves. Shadow Ball also hits Victini and takes care of Slowbro, who also resists Jynx's STAB moves. Grass Knot and Energy Ball are also options to hit Slowbro, while hitting Empoleon for neutral damage. However, these moves will usually not find a slot on Jynx's moveset, as it needs at least Calm Mind and Lovely Kiss. Rapid Spin support is a must, as Jynx is weak to Stealth Rock. Hitmontop makes an excellent partner, resisting Dark- and Rock-type moves that Jynx is weak to. Suicune is also a great partner, as it resists Fire- and Steel-type moves that Jynx is weak to, and takes physical attacks directed at Jynx with ease.

[Other Options]

Jynx has a wide movepool, but can't really use all she has access to. Jynx can sometimes use Taunt with some success, however. Signal Beam can be used to hit Dark-type Pokemon for super effective damage. Jynx also has the combination of Mean Look and Perish Song, but she doesn't have the defenses to pull it off. Jynx also has access to Trick Room and Rain Dance, as well as other support moves such as Wish, Heal Bell, Toxic, Sweet Kiss, Reflect, and Light Screen, but other Pokemon pull those off more easily. Jynx also has a wide physical movepool, but her Attack stat is very bad and she can only boost it with Meditate.

[Checks and Counters]

Every physical Pokemon that can outspeed Jynx can counter her, as her terrible Defense stat makes her vulnerable to almost any physical move. Mew with a positive Speed nature always outspeed Jynx, and can hit hard with Shadow Ball or Shadow Claw. Houndoom with Sucker Punch will easily KO Jynx, and can also use its Fire-type moves to finish her off. Jynx is no match for Weavile either, as she is extremly weak to Pursuit. Cobalion resists Ice Beam and can KO Jynx with its STAB Fighting- or Steel-type moves.

[Dream World]

Jynx gets Dry Skin as her Dream World ability. Dry Skin is a great ability, and grants Jynx an immunity to Water-type moves, and recovering HP if hit by one. It also has the effect of restoring HP in rain, which is great for Jynx. Even Dry Skin's debilitating effects don't matter much, since many Fire-type moves already KO Jynx, and sun is uncommon in UU. This ability should be used on all sets when it's released, as this will enable Jynx to completly wall mono-attackers such as Roar Suicune, but Taunt is necessary in that case.

maybe mention modest and liforb on the nasty plot set? gives you a 7.69% to OHKO chansey with sealth rock and one layer of spikes afther at +2.

I don't know about Modest on the NP set as you need the speed. Forgot to mention LO though.

Great work on this, but have you tried Life Orb on the Nasty Plot set? Jynx is powerful but it still needs all the power it can get. Also, mention that faster Pokemon need to be removed before it can sweep, Jynx falls just short of the base 100 mark :\

No, I never tried Life Orb, but I guess I could slash it, if that's what you meant.

Will do, I'll mention those fast Pokémons.

Remove the LO and Choice sets. LO is pretty pointless when you can just NP, and Jynx has easily walled STAB attacks and a SR weakness which does not lend itself to choice sets very well. The other two sets look good though.

I thought I posted here already.. hm.

you may want to lower the speed. while you should definitely keep timid, you may want to lower it to outspeed + base 90s or 86s. I say this mostly because there are two pokemon that have base 95, off the top of my mind: arcanine (who will do shittons with extremespeed) and yanmega (which will just protect to eliminate the speed tie issues; it is admittedly useful vs. tinted lens though). other threats, like drapion and houndoom, are rarely seen.

No mention of scarf blizzspam at all? I mean Jynx is one of the strongest blizzspammers and is also the strongest one with focus blast, yet it's ignored?

what's up with the CM EVs? they seem really... random.

How has flareblitz not yet posted here?

Well, I've used these sets and they work. You can't argue with the results. And where do you suppose I put those EVs then?

Why would I ever want to use calm mind jynx? Calm mind alakazam is faster and has a higher initial spa, and better typing.

They switch in a counter, you use Sub, they use <physical/super effective move>, Alakazam uses Encore? What does that accomplish?
They switch in a counter, you use Sub, they use <physical/super effective move>, Jynx uses Lovely Kiss. Jynx's counter is now out of commission.

Encore is only good for forcing the initial switch, which Alakazam and Jynx don't really need since they force switches just by being so powerful. Lovely Kiss lets you beat the switch-in, which Encore will never do.

[SET COMMENTS]

This set is all about boosting Jynx's Special Attack with Nasty Plot. Get Jynx into onto the field, either when one of your Pokemon have fainted or come in on a resisted or weak special move. With Lovely Kiss, setting up becomes much easier, as your opponent's Pokemon is asleep. Substitute serves a similar purpose, as it keeps Jynx protected protects Jynx from damage and hinders prevents status. Ice Beam is Jynx's main STAB move, and it hits hard from hitting hard off of Jynx's great Special Attack. Psyshock is a reliable secondary STAB moves that and takes care of Chansey, and while Focus Blast still hits Chansey for super effective damage, it also hits Steel-type Pokemon, who resist Jynx's STAB moves.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

You can also opt to use Hidden Power Ground to hit Victini hard, as it resists the listed moves, while hitting Steel-type Pokemon hard as well. The IVs listed gives Jynx yield Hidden Power Ground, maximizing and also maximize Jynx's bulk and Speed. Shadow Ball is also an option to hit Victini and Slowbro, who also resist Jynx's other moves. Grass Knot or Energy Ball can also be used to hit Slowbro and Empoleon for neutral damage, something that Shadow Ball can't do. Blizzard is an option if you use Jynx on a Hail hail team. In Hail hail, Blizzard has 100% accuracy and hits much harder than Ice Beam. If you want to gamble a little for more power, Blizzard can be used outside Hail, hail, but it's not recommended. Life Orb makes Jynx hit harder, but shortens her lifespan. Leftovers is the superior item, allowing Jynx to recover while setting up and when your opponent's Pokemon is asleep.

Since there are many Pokemon in UU with at least 100 base Speed, these Pokemon must be removed before Jynx can come in and set up. Rapid Spin support is a must, and Hitmontop makes the best partner, is the best choice to provide this, resisting Rock- and Dark-type moves that Jynx is weak to, while Jynx resists Psychic-type moves that Hitmontop is weak to. Uxie makes a good partner, as it can set up Stealth Rock, alongside screens, which can help score some extra KOs, as well as dual screens.

[SET]
name: Calm Mind
move 1: Calm Mind
move 2: Ice Beam / Psyshock
move 3: Substitute
Move 4: Lovely Kiss
item: Leftovers
ability: Forewarn
nature: Timid
evs: 200 HP / 56 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Unlike the Nasty Plot set, Jynx now takes on a more defensive role with Calm Mind. After one boost, weaker special moves from Pokemon such as Milotic won't break through one Substitute, and after several boosts, Jynx can survive even the most powerful moves from Pokemon such as Moltres. Lovely Kiss puts slower Pokemon and switch-ins to sleep to give Jynx an easier time to set setting up.

The listed EVs gives give Jynx some bulk, while she still ties while allowing her to Speed tie with Arcanine and other base 95 Speed Pokemon in the tier.

Jynx also has the combination of Mean Look and Perish Song, but she doesn't have the defenses for it to work well. to pull it off. Jynx also has access to Trick Room and Rain Dance, as well as other support moves such as Wish, Heal Bell, Magic Coat, Toxic, Sweet Kiss, Reflect, and Light Screen, but other Pokemon pull those off more easily.

Cobalion resist Ice Beam and can KO Jynx with its STAB Fighting- or Steel-type moves.
